A Festival of Lessons
and Carols for Advent
Welcome to St. Joseph Memorial Chapel and the annual Festival of Lessons
and Carols for Advent! This chapel, which has been the spiritual center of the
College since 1924, memorializes those from Holy Cross who died in World War
I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In the vestibule is a plaque
commemorating the visit of Cardinal Joseph Bernardin who was awarded an
honorary degree from Holy Cross in 1983 and who died in 1996, and outside on the
Chapel Plaza is a plaque memorializing the six Jesuit priests and two lay colleagues
who were assassinated at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El
Salvador in 1989. The lower level of the building, which was renovated in 2003,
contains the Mary and McCooey Chapels, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the
Reconciliation Chapel and the Gathering/Baptismal space. Rest rooms are located
on the lower level. Use the stairs or elevator to the right front of the chapel.
Tonight’s celebration has its foundation in the Office of Readings from the
Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Catholic Church. At the end of the 19th century,
a service of “Lessons and Carols” for Christmas Eve was introduced at Truro
Anglican Cathedral. In 1918, E. Milner-White adapted it for the chapel of King’s
College, Cambridge, England, where a parallel service was devised to mark the First
Sunday of Advent. “Lessons and Carols” has been a holiday tradition at Holy Cross
since 1978 when it was introduced by former College Chaplain Robert Manning,
S.J. and former College Choir director Bruce Miller.
We wish you God’s abundant blessings this Advent and Christmas!

Shout for joy, daughter Zion! sing joyfully, Israel!
Be glad and exult with all your heart, daughter Jerusalem!
The LORD has removed the judgment against you,
he has turned away your enemies;
The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst,
you have no further misfortune to fear. On that day,
it shall be said to Jerusalem:
Do not fear, Zion, do not be discouraged!
The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior,
Who will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love,
Who will sing joyfully because of you, as on festival days.
Hymn
Silent Night (Franz Gruber) (sung by all)
1. Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace, sleep in heavenly peace.
2. Silent night, holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories strem from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing alleluia!
Christ, the Savior is born! Christ, the Savior is born.
3. Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth. Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
Choir Anthem
Ring, Ring Out Your Bells (Abraham Ross ’16)
Ring out, ye bells!
All Nature swells
With gladness at the wondrous story, -The world was lorn,
But Christ is born
To change our sadness into glory.
Sing, earthlings, sing!
To-night a King
Hath come from heaven’s high throne to bless us.
The outstretched hand
O’er all the land
Is raised in pity to caress us.
Come at his call;
Be joyful all;
Away with mourning and with sadness!
The heavenly choir
With holy fire
Their voices raise in songs of gladness.
The darkness breaks
And Dawn awakes,
Her cheeks suffused with youthful blushes.
The rocks and stones
In holy tones
Are singing sweeter than the thrushes.
Then why should we
In silence be,
When Nature lends her voice to praises;
When heaven and earth
Proclaim the truth
Of Him for whom that lone star blazes?
No, be not still,
But with a will
Strike all your harps and set them ringing;
On hill and heath
Let every breath
Throw all its power into singing!
-Paul Laurence Dunbar

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the
virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace!
The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and
pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will
conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will
be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give
him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob
forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel
said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of
the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be
called holy, the Son of God.
