TheAerodynamicsgroupisengagedin bothfundamentalandappliedresearch relatedtotheunderstandingandcontrol ofaerodynamicflows. Thegroup’sstrengthslieinthe developmentofnewexperimentaland computationaltechniquesandthe investigationofcomplexflow phenomena. JasperKreeft Concerningexperimentaltechniques,the aerodynamicsgroupisattheforefrontof thedevelopmentofparticleimage velocimetry(PIV)includingitsapplication tobothunsteadyandhigh-speedflows. Thisincludesthedevelopmentof methodstoderiveforcesfromPIVdata, andwhichoptimallycombine experimentalresultswithnumericalflow simulations.Thegroupisalsoveryactive inthedevelopmentofnewmethodsfor numericalflowsimulation.Thisincludes methodswhichexactlypreserveflow kineticenergyandhelicity,optimal methodsforthelarge-eddysimulationof turbulentflowsandefficienttechniques forfluid-structuresimulations.Inaddition, methodsforpropagatinginput uncertaintyarebeingadvanced,along withBayesiantechniquesforturbulence modelselectionandcalibration.Finally, theaerodynamicsgroupisengagedin thecharacterisationofseveralcomplex fluidphenomenaforapplicationtoflow control.Examplesincludetheeffectof micro-rampsonshock-boundarylayer interactions,soundproductioninduced bytrailing-edgeturbulenceinteractions andtheeffectsoflow-frequencyand nano-pulseplasmaactuatorson boundary-layertransition.MScprojects canbecarriedoutinallthesedisciplines bothintheAerodynamicsLabaswellas incollaborationwithindustry. From2005to2007Ifollowedthe AerodynamicsMasterprogramme, specialisinginComputationalFluid Dynamics.AfteraninternshipinChile workingonwindtunnellay-outdesigns,I returnedtotheAerodynamicsLaboratory inDelfttoperformmyMasterthesis researchoncompressibletwo-fluidflow modeling.Thiswasperformedin collaborationwiththeCenterof MathematicsandComputerScience(CWI) inAmsterdam.Whatattractedmemostto theAerodynamicsMasterwasthe combinationofbothappliedand fundamentaltopicsinitscourse programme,andthemixtureofnumerical andexperimentalexpertiseatthe AerodynamicsLaboratory.Inmyopinion theAerodynamicsLaboratoryisaunique locationwhichhasallowedmetodeepenas wellasbroadenmyknowledgeJasper Kreeftoffluiddynamics.Afterhaving workedforayearattheNationalAerospace LaboratoryinAmsterdam,Ireturnedtothe AerodynamicsLaboratorytostartmyPhD researchonstructure-preserving(mimetic) numericaltechniquesfor,butnotlimited to,fluiddynamics. Now,inmycurrentroleasfluidflow researcheratShellR&D,Iaminvolvedin thecomputationalmodellingofmultiphase flowsinproductionfacilities,turbulent reactingflowsinreactorsandfluidstructureinteractionsinoffshoreplatforms. WindTurbineDesign Sinceoffshorewindpoweristhemost demandingapplication,thedevelopment ofdesignmethodologiesisfocusingon offshorewindpowerstations.Twodesign aspectsprevailinthisresearch:tokeep theloadsontheoffshorewindturbines aslowaspossible,andtoaimfora maximumavailabilityofthewindpower stationwithlowmaintenance requirements. Otherresearchareasarethe developmentofareliablekitepower system-stateestimatorandthe developmentofafast,adaptivecontroller fortheground-station.TheWindEnergy researchgroupcollaborateswith,among others,ECN,Ecofys,Vestas,Siemens andMakaniPower.
