Pink Palace Family of Museums 2016 2017 The Pink Palace Museum • CTI 3D Giant Theater • AutoZone Dome at the Sharpe Planetarium Lichterman Nature Center • Historic Houses • Coon Creek Science Center www.memphismuseums.org INSPIRED LEARNING Teachers Keep on Teaching I have a simple mind. I think of anything—say, writing this piece—and within minutes a song with associated lyrics starts playing on my inside jukebox. Right now it’s Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” playing on Radio-Me. You remember that line, “Teachers keep on teaching?” Well, that’s what we help teachers do here at the Pink. Teachers have one of the hardest jobs going. Everyone who doesn’t do it can tell those who do how. And they say there is a crisis in education, too. Of course there is. There always is. Helping kids learn how to thrive in the world is the definition of a crisis—“a time of intense difficulty.“ It also is what grownups do in every generation. We have invested a lot recently to help teachers. We installed 3D and digital capacity in the CTI giant screen theater. That gives us not only 3D, but the ability to quickly and easily show educational movies as “teacher’s choices” on demand. The AutoZone Dome at the Sharpe Planetarium also has added digital capacity. So, the shows are more varied, dynamic and entertaining, as well as more educational. Simply put: two immensely improved learning experiences. Much more is on the way. In early 2018, we will unveil a completely re-imagined Pink Palace Mansion. We will pioneer a digital docent there that will unlock our rich collections for students, teachers, and the whole community. Then, we will re-do all our exhibits. We‘re planning that now and we are nowhere near done, but I will tell you that I know already our efforts will create a world-class museum. So, teachers, please, please, please keep on teaching. And please let us do all we can to help. Steve Pike, Director of Museums, Pink Palace Family of Museums Tennessee Science Alliance educational standards are noted. they are from: The Pink Palace Family of Museums receives funding from the State of Tennessee for the Tennessee Science Alliance program, providing instructorled, museum-based science education for Tennessee students. The Governor as well as the Legislature is involved. This affirms the importance of our science education efforts and promotes museums as valued partners with school systems across the state. During the 2015-2016 school year, the Pink Palace Family of Museums served 92,043 students with this unique program. · Tennessee State Board of Education Science 2007 · Mississippi State Science Curriculum 2010 · Arkansas Science Curriculum Framework 2005 · Tennessee Social Studies Standards 2015 · Mississippi Social Studies Framework and Guide 2011 · Arkansas Social Studies Curriculum Framework 2007 Standards are listed on pages 24-25 of this Educator’s Planning Guide.
