SHAPERS features ZAID MAXWELL (guitar/ synths/vocals), STEVE REIDELL (guitar/bass), AMELIA STYER (synths/vocals) and TODD WATERS (drums/percussion). The newly formed four piece has bonded over a shared passion for sonic explorations. The resulting material playfully experiments with atmospheric waves, ambient soundscapes, squalling jazz blasts and pulsing Krautrock. Their debut album LITTLE, BIG, released last winter, garnered massive praise around their hometown. Their latest release, VIRGINIA REEL, is out now on Whistler Records. Curated by Robert Brenner. To submit a project for consideration, contact: gallery@whistlerchicago.com JIMMY MARTIN — He sang lead on some of BILL MONROE’s finest cuts, and played a mean guitar, with a distinctive song-ending chop. Most of his recordings for Decca/MCA are worth getting, and FREE BORN MAN and WIDOW MAKER have definitely been re-issued on CD. BOB WILLS AND THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS — This music is pure enjoyment! They were the kings of Western swing; the seemingly perverse combination of country & western, and jazz-swing, and they could really turn up the heat. Their best work was in the 1930s and 1940s, and there are plenty of collections of this era’s output. Any of THE TIFFANY TRANSCRIPTIONS series is gonna treat you right. Ta k e t h e #74 FULLERTON BUS or # 5 6 M I LWA U K E E B U S E the whistler store— front gallery ✦ WEBB PIERCE — A huge star in his day, he is now barely known by anyone other than hardcore country fans. He was a first-rate honky tonker, and he could really put a tear in your beer with a slow song. Both of his first albums are solid: WEBB PIERCE WITH MUSICAL ACCOMPANIMENT, and WONDERING BOY. There are also plenty of worthwhile ‘best of’ collections, but avoid THE WEBB PIERCE STORY — it’s all later re-recordings of his hits. JOHNNY PAYCHECK — He’s best known for the huge 1977 hit “TAKE THIS JOB AND SHOVE IT”, but his best work was on his own Little Darlin label, in the 1960s. He made music that was a remarkable combination of honky tonk, country soul, countrypolitan and outlaw. The CD collection THE LITTLE DARLIN YEARS has most of the finest tracks from this era. K completely necessary performers / records, right off the top of my head, and that doesn’t include all of the different eras and styles. In whittling my list down to ten, I left out some of the more ob- RALPH STANLEY — BILL MONROE is credited with creating the style known as bluegrass but, for my money, this guy is the best performer in that genre. He opens his mouth, and thousands of years of Scots-Irish and Appalachian hardship and culture pours out. There’s nothing wrong with his banjo picking, either. SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW, and HILLS OF HOME are both great introductions to his work. STONEWALL JACKSON — He was something of a throwback when his first album was released in 1959. By then, Nashville was signing mostly smooth, accessible voices, very different from this guy’s smoldering, old-school style. It’s amazing to hear the combination of his primitive wail put to these new-fangled tunes, with all of that Nashville shiny-shiny applied to the mix. I recommend THE DYNAMIC STONEWALL JACKSON and I LOVE A SONG. 0 U L P : Man, that’s tough. I can think of at least 20 ROGER MILLER — He was a tremendous songwriter, and a brilliant performer that had that rare ability to be funny and heartbreaking, some-times in the same song. KING OF THE ROAD is an excellent, comprehensive CD collection, but any of his records from the 60s is a good bet. The album A TRIP IN THE COUNTRY is a rare treat from the 70s, and worth seeking out. FEATURING — PIRING COUNTRY MUSIC LISTENER ACQUIRE TO E D U C AT E T H E M S E LV E S A B O U T T H E GENRE? LORETTA LYNN — In my estimation, the perfect female country singer. Any greatest hits, or best of collection will do you right, and she has good recordings all the way through the 70’s. Va n L e a r R o s e ( w i t h Jack White) is pretty good, too. 01 / DECEMBER CALENDAR W : WHAT 10 RECORDS SHOULD EVERY AS- HANK WILLIAMS — He’s the core singer and songwriter in the genre of country music, and it would be criminal to leave him out. There’s no shortage of greatest hits collections of his music, so dig in. 02 / C O C K TA I L CLASSES W I T H PA U L Well, first I want to say that what I call "country music" isn’t the stuff you’ll generally hear on the radio. I’m not much of a fan of the Nashville pop that gets played on US99, and places like that (though I do have my moments). To me country music is one of our great musical traditions, like jazz, blues, and rock & roll (all of them connected, by the way) and, at its best, it’s full of great melodies, hooks, and pickin’, well crafted lyrics, clever structures, and heartfelt singing. Most of the music’s roots come from Scots-Irish-English folk traditions, but you’ll also find German, African and Mexican influences. There’s a generalization that country songs are all about trucks, lost dogs, guns, and that kind of thing. Sure, there are lyrics that are maudlin, or goofy, but what I listen for is people singing about daily life, hard times, good times, loss, love, fear, hunger, plenty…the kind of stuff that matters to everyone. It doesn’t hurt if all of that is set to a great Texas shuffle, or a really sweet waltz. vious greats (JOHNNY CASH, GEORGE JONES, BUCK OWENS, MERLE HAGGARD, TAMMY WYNETTE, THE CARTER FAMILY…) so I could focus on some of my favorites from the big leagues, plus some lesser-known greats. Even so, I barely scratched the surface. (Come to my DJ night, and you’ll get the whole deal!) This “band” is really ERIK HALL and his songs. ERIK is a natural multi-instrumentalist, equally at home playing electric guitar and percussion in NOMO, fuzzed-out bass in HIS NAME IS ALIVE, or Motown-inspired drums in SATURDAY LOOKS GOOD TO ME. But here we find him, for the first time, in his own element, alone in his home studio layering track upon track of vocal harmonies, guitars, pianos, and heavy rhythms, to create his solo debut as a veritable one-man band. For a couple years IN TALL BUILDINGS sat in the slow cooker while ERIK spent months at a time on the road with NOMO and HIS NAME IS ALIVE, returning home to put all his earnings into recording equipment and all his time into songwriting. Tape delays, spring reverbs, half-broken synthesizers, funky organs, mics, preamps, mixers, and an old Fender Starcaster guitar all found their way into his apartment and onto his songs. He maxed out his credit card, recorded vocals in a linen closet, and called in favors to make it happen, and after four years and countless hours producing himself, here is a beautiful and challenging record. This is rock music, informed by ERIK’s array of influences. Imagine a THOM YORKE remix of CROSBY, STILLS, NASH, AND YOUNG; or if GILLIAN WELCH were to sit in with STEVE REICH & MUSICIANS. Bubbling synth sequences, driving distorted drum beats, interwoven finger-picked guitars, and pulsing woodwind chorales all find their way into the mix. ERIK’s lyrics unveil a personal world through stark imagery: a monster’s lair, a bed of soft linens, a spilled glass of wine, a shared whiskey bottle, and a walking man. I N TA L L BUILDINGS 04 L P : Honky-tonk is my constant favorite. It’s good time music, for dancing and drinking, but the lyrics often tell stories that belie the generally upbeat melodies. Most of the great country songwriters excelled at writing in this style, and honky-tonk also benefits from being popular at a time when lots of innovative pickers knew how to play it, and studio engineering had become an art form. It’s also the style I write most of my songs in. 05 06 INTERVIEW BY JENNIFER BOEDER L AW R EN C E PETER S' C O U N TRY TH R O W - D O W N : FR ESH G O O D S O N TH E TH IR D SU N D AY O F EVERY M O N TH ! 07 08 P E RF ORM I NG DE CE M BE R 5 / 2 0 1 0 F OR M ORE I NF O V I S I T : W W W.
