CONCEPT MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS PTY LTD 244 - 246 Cambridge Street Wembley WA 6014 TELEPHONE (08) 9381 2277 FACSIMILE (08) 9381 2477 WEBSITE www.conceptmusic.com.au EMAIL info@conceptmusic.com.au newsletter CONCEPT ★ MUSIC DECEMBER EDITION 2013 NOW OPEN 7 DAYS! ★ ★ ★ Do yourself a favour and catch the Russell Holmes Trio at the Ellington Tony Bourke currently touring with Eskimo Joe PRAISE THE NORD! Several Sundays ago on a rainy and cold evening in October, a few of us at Concept went to the awesome Ellington Jazz Club in Northbridge to catch a few sets by the Russell Holmes Trio. We left later on feeling we had seen and heard something really special, even those who were not necessarily straight up jazz fans. Russell comes from a musical pedigree, his father was a well known local jazz guitarist and Russell has since gone on to perform with some very big names in the music industry, appeared on many recordings, and has been a very popular lecturer at WAAPA since 1989. A. Thanks Shane. We really love to bring people to the music. Allowing the audience to get familiar with the themes in the tunes means they can come along for the ride when we really get going. Good music is always good music whether it’s Jazz or not. Q. Mate, the trio sounds awesome. There was a lot of great musicianship by all involved with great soloing and interplay, but not at the expense of the song, or the listener. I like the modern approach of appealing to people from all walks and knocking down genre stereotypes, sort of like Herbie Hancock and Co. Is this something you try for? Q. You purchased a Nord Electro 3 from us recently. It has great piano, old school electric Q. It must be great to have such fabulous piano, and organ sounds. It is also so sounding keyboards these days that come light and portable. Is this for gigs with brilliant graded hammer action? where you want the portability RUSSELL and some funkier sounds? A. As I mentioned earlier, I love the HOLMES AND action and it still weighs less than 11 A. I love it! I’ve done all TONY BOURKE kilos. Brilliant! kinds of gigs in the last SHARE THEIR Q. The rhythm section was spot on. Did they come up through the WAAPA system? A. Mike Perkins and Karl Florrison are both graduates of WAAPA and have taught there in both Jazz and Contemporary courses. They are amazing players! As a group we’ve been together for over 2 years and we like to get together and play most weeks, even when there isn’t a gig. three months and f ind all aspects of the Nord totally suitable to my musical lifestyle. I also f ind the action totally agreeable. Q. It also has good effects like the Lesley emulator. Any particular features stand out for you? A. The Delay and reverb unit is really f lexible and useful when setting up grooves and the grungy , dirty electric piano sounds take me back to those times instantly. And especially for me, the grand piano sounds are great on our gig at Amani down in Leederville. Q. Do you run the Nord thru any DI’s into the desk, or is it just straight? A. Normally it’s just straight in, but at the Ellington recently we DI’ed (no we didn’t really die!) and that also worked a treat. LOVE OF ALL THINGS NORD CONTINUED > What’s New? New generation AKG & Audio Technica wireless systems. Strymon pedals. Fender Starcaster guitar. Dunlop Mini Fuzz Face pedals. > PRAISE THE NORD continued... Q. What is coming up for yourself and the trio mate and where can people see you guys around town. A. We have a regular gig at Amani Winebar in Leederville early each Thursday night, and during December will also be at Clancys City Beach every Friday Night. Our XMAS gig at the Ellington on the 19th December will feature amazing guitarist Harry Winton and Carl Mackey on sax and we’ll playing some of the music of Aaron Parkes with those guys. I’m looking forward to that! Lastly we just keep writing and will head east for a trip next year and record all our new stuff. And of course, keep having as much fun as we can! ★ ★ ★ Tony Bourke is a familiar face around Perth and has been a gigging and touring muso across the country, and also a session player of renown in Perth for over 10 years. He has currently landed the role of keyboards for Eskimo Joe when they are on the road and he recently came in to grab a Nord Stage II 88. Q. Well done mate on the Eskies gig. Their new album features way more keyboard and synth than any of their previous albums including vintage, old school analogue sounds. It was going to take a special instrument to cover a lot of bases on the road for this tour. Is this why you went for the Nord? A. Thanks. It's been an amazing few years working with the esky lads come touring times. This last LP, it's fair to say, they weren't even sure how to emulate the mass of vintage synths used to record it! There we're many early 80s rigs used such as Jupiter 4, Dave Smiths Prophet, Moog, and more modern analogues like the Tetra4. This is where the Nord Stage 2 enters the fold... amazingly, all of these 80s sounds are possible via the Nord's built-in synth, or through the sample library, which is excellent. We needed a Theremin line, with quality portamento character, and found it thru the Nord website... download, assign, play... simple as that. No hours of sub-menu scrolling, just bang... there it is. Also, the ability to tweak any sound, in real time, with real parameters/knobs/values, is priceless. Most top-range gigging rigs, for years now, lean towards "work-station" keyboards, which is fine in a studio setting, with time up your sleeve to master sub-menu within submenu... but it's not practical at all for live playing and session work...where time is of the essence. This is where Nord has hit it out of the park. It's a true beast. Q. What is the live set up for the keys onstage as far as how you go into the desk? Are you running stereo, using stereo Di boxes and anything else of note? A. For smaller gigs up to 100 – 300, I would use a single DI for clear strong signal. For larger shows like The Eskies, it’s 2 DI boxes for stereo imaging, which allows cool effects like panning, trem, delay and B3 Leslie to come alive. Running mono can have advantages because all of the highs and lows of an 88 note instrument can drown out other instruments. Q. The Stage II 88 has got everything from great piano, old school electric piano, organ with drawbar function, synth, and some really useful effects. Are there any of the features that stand out for you? A. Oh man, I could name a dozen at least, on top of what you have already mentioned. The Petrof Black Upright is the best upright sample ever, the string resonance, B3 bite, the onboard effects unit is so intuitive and easy to master. The Mellotron ( listen to those tape heads go), the complete new synth. The sample library, my old 2007 rig couldn’t do this – just jump online to their website and you got it all. Q. You must have a ball every time you go onstage with the Eskies. Are there gigs so far which stand out? A. It is a ball. 2011 Splendour In The Grass for atmosphere, The Forum in Melbourne, The Tivoli in Brisbane is all class with timeless architecture. Cairns several weeks ago – never was there more sweat factor, ridiculous, but it made us play with more f ire. Up North in WA has its fair share of characters, and lack of footwear. I lost my shoes and had to play in socks and f itted right in – a woman even asked me if I was sponsored by Bonds. ★ ★ ★ GRAHAM’S RAVE Well, yes. It’s Christmas... again. And if last year is anything to go by, it will hardy be over before we see Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns appearing on the Super-Market shelves early in January. Then of course we will have Valentine’s Day... then Mothers Day... and of course Fathers Day, and.... well, eventually here will be again... Christmas! What a strange consumerist world we seem to have created. In days gone by I would often express my cynicism, at the fashion industry in particular, for what I saw as the way they unnecessarily changed their designs and colours every single season in an attempt to make us as their customers consumer feel dissatisf ied with what we already have even though there is nothing wrong with it just so that they can “sell more”. In recent years however I’ve changed my mind somewhat... now I believe that, by and large, they are simply responding to consumer demand for “What’s new?!”. What do I mean by that? Can you imagine a company like Fender guitars, for example, telling us “we haven’t released any new models this year as our models from last year were so awesome we didn’t need to change anything!”? I am sure many of you reading this would react with a resounding “Nooooooooooooooo!! I want the NEW one... the LATEST one!”. It seems to me people WANT and even demand new models... almost incessantly. Proof to some extent is how many regular customers who come into Concept week after week will start chatting and almost inevitably ask us “So... what’s new?!” Without expressing it, I sometimes think to myself “You mean... since yesterday when you asked the same question?!” But you know what? There IS always something new... and maybe that’s exactly why we love it so much. So, thank you all for being so eager and coming in so regularly and asking “What’s New?!” It’s a question we never get sick of... and it is a question you can be sure we will always have a ready answer for so that we can help satisfy your musical cravings! Happy Christmas to you all... and thank you making it another fantastic year at Concept Music. Graham Hoskins keyboards &recording check our website for more details ★ ★ ★ WHATS HOT !!! YAMAHA P 35 ★ We are going to have to leave the front door open just for the amount of these walking out with happy customers. It’s amazing how well priced a quality digital piano has now become in a very short space of time. This popular compact portable piano has a slim design and simple functions, with great stereo sound and graded hammer action and only RR $599. With an Onstage keyboard stand at only $34.95, you’re ready to play anywhere, anytime. ★ ★ ★ NOVATION MINI NOVA SYNTH I want one of these babies. This is a super cool studio, and/or live synth with a great sound engine. 256 onboard sounds that you can tweak with 5 knobs, or go outta space with 8 animate knobs. Up to 18 voices with as many as 5 synth effects on each sound. I love the vocoder which allows you to recreate iconic vocal sounds, and all in pitch. Great for something different, no matter what your gig. Add some spice RR $749. check our website for more details √ Lee’s Pick! ★ ★ ★ ★ YAMAHA HS REFERENCE MONITORS Flat and accurate response. This is what you want in any recording enterprise, whether it is in your home or in a studio. With great quality recording at every ones f inger tips these days, many folks let themselves down by using average reference monitors that can exaggerate bass and treble response. Whether you're mixing for stereo or 5.1 surround, mixes that sound good on Yamaha HS series reference monitors will translate accurately to the widest possible range of reproduction systems. We love the HS powered monitors, and the price. We are currently doing a killer price on HS 5 for $479 a pair, HS 7 for $639 a pair, and HS 8 for $789 a pair. They look great and sit well on the Onstage Monitor Stands at only RR $125 a pair. check our website for more details ★ ★ ★ ★ ZOOM H6 HANDY RECORDER Wow. This stuff is becoming breath taking. A six track portable recorder with brilliant preamps for killer sound, and 6 discrete line or mic inputs with their own volume control and pad. You can record and overdub up to 99 takes in high res audio and mix down to stereo MP3. It has four interchangeable mic capsules. The X/Y capsule has 2 unidirectional mics that are sensitive to signal coming from the front, but less sensitive to signal from the side. The X/Y recording is great for covering a wide area but with a strong emphasis on the centre, making it great for all types of live stereo recording. RR $679. Yazza! check our website for more details ★ Did you know we have over 2000 You Tube demo links on our website... check em out! in stock! ★ Yamaha DTX532 electronic drum kit ★ NEW Yamaha HS Series Powered Monitors ★ Maton "Road Series" all solid acoustic guitars ★ Yamaha TRBX bass guitars ★ Roland FP50 pianos ★ Ditto Looper pedals Staff Pick! ★ ★ ★ SQUIER AFFINITY HSS STRAT PACK ★ ★ ★ MATON MASTERSOUND T-BYRD This one is a shop favourite. An axe for all seasons I reckon because of the sound variations you can get. The thinline cavity on the bass side gives it a great vibe and there is the sweet Lollar Charlie Christian single coil in the neck giving a sweet, round and warm sort of like a P-90 vibe but better. The playability and feel of this neck is delicious and is partly due to the Rock Maple D shape which has a taper that creates a very even string tension across the board. I love that they are still using Aussie tonewoods too, the Quandong body is a local tree and you can make jam from it (my mum's was awesome). Come in and play it because it is worthy. RR $1899. Check out our website links to John Butler and Travis Collins putting one through its paces. NEW ★ Yep, it is just around the corner, but we sell a lot of packs throughout the year. The boss asked me recently “which is the boy’s favourite pack?” so I set about asking. We were unanimous of the Squier HSS pack, and I also like the Yamaha Pacifica Pack. They’re both beauties. With more value than you can poke a stick at, this Squier Pack features a great looking Affinity Strat guitar with a humbucker bridge pickup, a punchy 15-watt Fender Frontman 15G amp to plug it into and all the accessories you need, including an electronic tuner, instructional DVD, gig bag, cable, strap and picks. RR $499. Website special $375! check our website for more details ★ ★ ★ ★ ROLAND CUBES These are a great range of amps that have been around for years. They are solid and cover a lot of situations and they have recently had a facelift and some changes. Currently the range consists of: 80GX– 80-watt guitar amp with 12” inch custom speaker, 11 amp types, three independent channels, i-CUBE LINK interface, and built-in chromatic/manual tuner. RR $599. The 40GX is 40 watts, a 10” speaker, 10 amp types and three independent effects sections, i-CUBE LINK interface, and built-in chromatic/manual tuner. RR $379 There is also a 20 watter for $299, and a 3 watt Micro Cube for $199. They are great student amps because apart from the great sound quality, students can have a great range of effects to get started too. They also make ideal practice and jam amps, or they can be used for smaller gigs where space is a premium. electricstuff! ★ ★ ★ NEW STUFF FROM FENDER Did you know we have over 2000 You Tube demo links on our website... check em out! Over the next couple of months, keep an eye out in the shop for some exciting new product from Fender, including an American Special Jazzmaster RR $1799 that comes stock with an Adjusto-Matic bridge for better tuning and intonation – hooray! Also on the way is a Modern Player Coronado Bass RR $1599 that looks stunning and a Starcaster too. We are excited with anticipation for the arrival of the 68 Custom Silver Face Series of amps like the Deluxe Reverb. Still my favourite guitar amp and it looks just like the originals. It has a 12 inch G12-V70 Celestion speaker and a custom channel featuring a Bassman tone stack. The price is yet to be announced by Fender but is expected to be around RR $2000 and the eta early next year. NEW ★ ★ ★ ★ BEST BANG FOR BUCK AWARD – SUB BASS GUITARS BY STERLING PLACE THE BASS Please excuse me if I sound a little over enthusiastic, but it's hard not to with so much great product around. This is such a good series of basses. From the Music Man stable, these instruments are incredible. They present someone with a great way to get into Stingray basses without the big price tag and are a pleasure to play. The hardwood bodies are light, well balanced and sit very easily. The tone from humbucker and the 2-band active pre-amp sounds like it should be coming from a bass three times the price and the hardware is solid and looks ready to last forever. Ideal for a student who wants to go from a starter to something with far more f inesse under a grand, or for someone who would like a change up from a passive Jazz basses into something active. Love playing these. Sub 4 RR $495. check our website for more details ★ ★ ★ ★ TECH 21 BASS BOOST CHORUS Finding a good sounding chorus for bass can be a chore. So the crew at Tech 21 went back to the ‘70s for that milky rich smooth sound. Apart from great chorus, this pedal does way more such as slapback, echo, f langing and doubling effects. Sample settings include such styles as Cure Bass, Hooky, Squire Harmonized, Bass Chorus-no modulation, Jaco Fretless, Vibrato Bass, Triple Voice Bass, Inf inite Flange, Bass Thickener. RR $309. ★ ★ ★ AMPEG V-4B HEAD AND SVT 212 AV CAB ★ ★ ★ ALL NEW - YAMAHA TRBX BASS GUITARS NEW ★ Yamaha basses. They are really well built, play nicely, and have excellent pickups. Check out their new range of TRBX instruments with sleek new body design, which is made from solid Mahogany, gives great balance and perfect weight distribution. They also have a new sleeker neck profile and a new high mass bridge giving richer tone and great durability. As usual, the further up the chain you go, the better quality woods and circuits come into play. They start with the TRBX174 RR $349, to the TRBX505 which has a very expressive active/passive pre-amp. RR $999 ★ ★ ★ OMG! OMG! OMG! We are always getting asked "If you could have your pick of anything in the shop, what would it be"? Well hello baby, this one is mine! It is just simply no nonsense tone delivery. Reissued from a 1971 model, its unmistakeable tube tone allows everything from well rounded fat, to serious grind. And if you think that 100 watts doesn't sound much for a bass head, think again. Being all-tube, it blows most other amps I've heard out of the water. It has a 3 band tone control and 3 rocker switches for mid range control, balanced line out and weighs only 20 kg. RR $2595 And plug it into the SVT 212 cab for perfect voice matching. 2 Eminence 12 inch drivers and a one inch compression horn, it is the perfect match, looks great and under 30 kg. RR $1495, and the boys have just poured a bucket of cold water over me. TECH TIP This is aimed at all fretted stringed instrument players (and possibly all string instruments). Your string has a steel core and has windings around that core, particularly the E, A, D, and often G strings. After you play, the windings quickly accumulate oils, dirt, sweat and skin (hmm yummy) and this can quickly turn your strings dead and unmusical. In bad cases it will cause poor tuning, and intonation should never be set with old and used strings still on the guitar. I’ve found that the string cleaning product by GHS called Fast Fret RR $14.95 is very effective in prolonging the life of my bass strings. If you like the sound of coated strings like Elixir, they are also and option. Some bass players boil their strings to clean them but personally it doesn’t work for me. ★ ★ ★ ALL NEW – MATON SOLID ROAD SERIES This is exciting. The R and D department at Maton have been busy over the last few years developing a new line of guitars that are all solid timber construction. They have improved many aspects such as neck geometry, bracing patterns and body construction by developing a production method that allows them to build an all solid, better sounding and playing guitar than ever before. And even better, they have managed to keep the cost down too. acousticroom The ESRS60C has a solid spruce top and solid Qld Maple back and sides. The new ramped bracing creates a focused bright tone and comes with AP5 pickup and Maton hard case. RR $1899 The ESRS70C has a solid spruce top and solid Tasmanian Blackwood back and sides. The new scalloped bracing provides a superior bass response and a rich midrange according to the folks at Maton. This one has the new AP5 Pro pickup and Maton hard case. A step up into the serious world of all solid nylons, this guitar has a sweet rich sound that you don’t get until you get in this league. A solid high grade Red Cedar top and all solid Indian Rosewood back and sides is where a lot of it comes from, but not all of it.
