Galen The Fa ll 201 2 /Winter 2 0 1 3 Gazette Advancing Medical Excellence Through Philanthropy at Virginia Hospital Center Dr. Robert Hong, Joan Hitt, Russell Hit, Dr. John Garrett, surrounded by the entire Radiation Oncology Staff. Hitt Family Center for Radiation Oncology to Open in 2013 In August 2012, Virginia Hospital Center broke ground on a $6.5 million Radiation Oncology expansion project which will significantly enhance the Hospital’s capacity to provide the most advanced radiation oncology treatments available to cancer patients. Upon completion, slated for the fourth quarter of 2013, the Department of Radiation Oncology will be renamed the HITT FAMILY CENTER FOR RADIATION ONCOLOGY in recognition of the Hitt family’s gift to the Campaign for Radiation Oncology. “Increasing access to advanced cancer treatments is a cause that is very important to my family and our community,” said Russell Hitt. “We are very proud to be able to support Virginia Hospital Center and value having world-class healthcare right here in Northern Virginia. The combination of the Hospital’s outstanding radiation oncology team and the most advanced radiation oncology equipment will mean saving even more lives and improving the quality of life for so many individuals in our community who are battling cancer,” said Mr. Hitt. The new radiation oncology treatment suite will be equipped with a state-of-the art TrueBeam™ linear accelerator that is designed to provide advanced treatments for lung, breast, prostate, head and neck, and other types of cancer. This new platform provides unprecedented speed and accuracy and makes it possible to offer greater patient comfort by shortening the amount of treatment time and improving precision by leaving less time for tumor motion during treatment. Patients will experience fewer side effects, more precise treatments sparing surrounding healthy tissue, and a more rapid return to health. Greg and Tanya Williams Preston and Jeanne Caruthers Launch the Friends of Healthcare Professionals Fund Longtime Arlington philanthropists and friends of Virginia Hospital Center, Preston and Jeanne Caruthers, have made a special gift to launch a new initiative at Virginia Hospital Center called the Friends of Healthcare Professionals Program. Modeled after the Friends of Nursing Program at Virginia Hospital Center which began with a gift by the Caruthers family in 1989, this new program will support the professional development of allied health professionals such as medical technicians and therapists. Today, Friends of Nursing is an endowment of over $3 million that provides scholarships, awards, and promotes advanced nursing certification. The Hospital’s goal is to replicate the success of this program, providing new opportunities for allied health professionals to advance their careers. Preston Caruthers Thank you, Preston and Jeanne, for your public service and generosity to our community. Virginia Hospital Center now ranks number one (#1) in the state of Virginia for patient satisfaction. This is the realization of everything that I have ever hoped for Arlington in having a wonderful Hospital, and the reason we started the Friends of Nursing Program over twenty years ago. We are happy to be able to launch the next generation of support for the Hospital and its dedicated staff. – Preston Caruthers Round of Applause We would like to welcome these new Galen Society members and thank them for advancing medical excellence at Virginia Hospital Center.
