Upon arriving at camp, all staff members participate in an intensive, week-long training and orientation which addresses safety protocols, youth development, counseling techniques, conflict resolution, camp policies and procedures. “ For two weeks every year, our daughter is in a safe, supportive, engaging and fun environment. It doesn’t get much better than that! - Parent Testimonial The Van Doren Wellness Center is staffed by an RN/LPN/EMT. The Wellness Center has nurse quarters and several spare rooms, allowing for ill campers private overnight accommodations. Camp Bernie has access to doctors, dentists, Hunterdon Medical Center and Hackettstown Hospital. Medical issues will be communicated to parents/guardians. & LICENSED BY THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY. Children today are facing some difficult challenges in achieving reasonable goals and building relationships. At YMCA Camp Bernie, we take the YMCA’s three initiatives of Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility very seriously. Holdover weekends are available to overnight campers that can’t go home for the weekend or want to stay at camp between sessions. Laundry, a day trip and/or camp activities are included in the fee. ACTIVITIES All campers select their free choice activities based on their interests and what might challenge them to do something outside of their comfort zone. I feel like I’ve known them my whole life, and we don’t even live in the same town! - Iroquois testimonial EXCITING PROGRAMS: OVERNIGHT CAMP FUN Campers are grouped by gender and grade level to provide optimal living and learning experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Cabins have 10 -12 campers, with at least two counselors. Campers will grow and learn through the integrated progression of activities, and will also build relationships, character and skills. CABIN GROUPS ARE SAFE & SUPPORTIVE HORSEBACK RIDING OPPORTUNITIES BEGINNER AND INTERMEDIATE RIDERS Horseback Riding Specialty: Grades 2-10 • Campers are instructed in small groups on safety, with Camp Bernie providing helmets, goggles and gloves during their riding sessions. • Riders learn dirtbike operations by experience on our dirt track with berms and jumps, to our woods track for intermediate riders, and the miles of different trails we have. • Campers learn to get over logs and other obstacles from beginner to advanced riding techniques and maneuvers. • Campers are taught basic maintenance of the bikes; including oiling the drivechain, changing oil from the crankcase, cleaning the carburetor, adjusting the idle, adjusting the clutch, and changing air filters. Advanced Horseback: Grades 7-10 (13 day sessions only) Prerequisite: Rider is comfortable at a trot, can lead a horse with confidence and is comfortable handling horses with staff supervision The Advanced Horsemanship program includes: • Horsemanship class (8 hours) • Extended riding on lesson days (5 hours) • Two early morning feeding sessions (emphasis: nutrition and health) (1.5 hours) • Two evening feeding sessions (emphasis: medical and basic veterinary care) (1.5 hours) “ The Dirt Bike program has not only taught me how to use a clutch and shift gears, but it has given me a passion that I will hold onto for the rest of my life. The instructors are certainly there for the love of riding dirtbikes, however, it is made clear to the camper that their purpose is not just to ride, but to learn and share their passion with them. - M. CALL US FOR NEW TO ADVANCED RIDERS Requirements: Grades 7-10. Long sleeve shirt, long pants and heeled boots. Campers are grouped according to skill level from beginner to advance. Each group will receive 8 hours of instruction. Campers will be grouped according to age and skill level with a guarantee of 8 hours of instruction per session. Two hour learning blocks are executed within a four day period. All riding students are required to wear: • Boots or shoes with a heal (Hiking boots, rain boots, riding boots or closed toed shoes are acceptable) • Long pants (jeans, stretch or sweat pants are acceptable) • Socks to wear with shoes • Rain jacket or poncho • Helmets are provided DIRTBIKES SPECIALTY PROGRAMS SPECIALTY PROGRAMS ENHANCE CAMP FUN! Campers entering the 7th grade will spend an exciting overnight trip canoeing on the Delaware River. This excursion gives teens the opportunity to discover what they are made of. The trip leader is a lifeguard and has experience on the river. • Campers sharpen canoe skills • Pitch tents, create campfire site and cook over an open fire • Create lifelong memories and friendships in a unique environment This excursion is included in the camp fees for campers entering 7th grade. Campers in grades 8-10 are invited to participate for an additional fee of $50. “ Visitourwebsitewww.campbernieymca.org YMCA Camp Bernie Counselor in Training program provides teenagers with an opportunity to learn about themselves and develop communication skills that build confidence. ACTIVITIES There are 4 sections of the CIT program: 1. Counselor-in-training sessions in and out of cabins 2. Program Training: Lifeguard certification, High Ropes, USAA Archery certification etc. 3. Adventure Trip on Delaware River & Appalachian Trail 4. Community Service Project “ The CIT program was awesome! We had loads of fun! It was my first year and I know I want to come back. We all got along very well and it was so much fun CALL US 908-832-5315 GRADES 11 “ The two most important aspects of the river trip are the challenges and the bonding. You go out on the river with a bunch of other kids and paddle all day long, but the whole time you are laughing and joking to make it fun and have the time go by. After the first day is done your arms are tired, but you feel good about it since you have done 7 of the 14 miles, then you wake up and you finish it up. When you make it to the finish line you feel so accomplished that you did all of it and the whole time you were having fun and getting to know everyone on the trip. WHAT’S NEW IN 2015 WHAT’S NEW IN 2015 OUR CABINS ARE CLEAN AND COMFORTABLE • The two one week sessions give new or returning campers the opportunity to try new activities or participate in a Ranch Camp. • Holdover Weekend gives campers an opportunity to stay at camp in between sessions. • New activities include: Laser Tag and Human Foos Ball. • Lodges and cabins are equipped with bunk style beds, storage areas, indoor bathrooms and showers • There are five types of cabins with living rooms, with and without fireplaces • Older boys (grades 7-10) stay in The Nation, a more rustic, natural environment with screened wooden cabins and a central bathhouse TRADING POST WE SERVE NUTRITIOUS MEALS YMCA Camp Bernie offers complete and tasty meals. There is a hot breakfast served every morning, along with cold cereal and breakfast bar options. Similarly, there is an extensive salad bar at lunch and dinner to accompany our well balanced main course and dessert. Campers with identified food restrictions can bring food to supplement meal options. BEST SUMMER EVER! The Trading Post at Camp Bernie is where campers purchase snacks and drinks. Items are charged to the child’s account, which is established by parents upon registration. Any unused money in the account can be donated to our camp scholarship fund.
