Jimmy Carter former President of the United States Frank Bricker – Male Youth Leadership During his time, Frank Bricker was a legend in the sport of boxing. Known by many in the ranks of Ontario Boxing as ‘Mr. Boxing’, Frank is best known in Brantford for his events in the development of the Summerhayes boys, the three boxing brothers who competed in national and international level competition. All 3 turned pro in 1970, and became the only set of three brothers to compete on the same card at Madison Square Garden, an accomplishment that can be attributed to Bricker’s work. Through his efforts, he put Brantford on the world boxing map for his ability to teach and train high caliber boxers. Frank Bricker Memorial Award for Male Youth Leadership Derek Quick LET THE GAMES BEGIN! PROUD MOMEMT FOR BRANTFORD “Ability is what you're capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” Lou Holtz , Football coach Phyllis Gretzky – Female Youth Leadership Phyllis is likely the least famous member of Canada’s first family of hockey, but many will tell you that she was the most important one. It was her dedication to her family that allowed Wayne to have the kind of success that he did. She was the family stalwart who kept everything cool and collected throughout Wayne’s rise to stardom, doing whatever was necessary behind the scenes to make sure that everything was as normal as it could have been. Her quiet leadership was the glue that kept the foundation together. Phyllis Gretzky Memorial Award for Female Youth Leadership Nominees Emily MacIntyre Erika Polidori Jaclyn Rollins “When I went down there, I thought I was rebuilding a football team. I quickly found out that it was also a community that suffered a great loss.” Jack Lengyel “Ask not what your teammates can do for you. Jack Calbeck Memorial Award for Lifetime Sports Sponsorship Jack Calbeck for many years was a major contributor to all sports in the city of Brantford. Without the support from individuals like Jack our minor sports associations would not be able to provide the levels of services they do. With this award we are happy to recognize those individuals who show this same level of support and dedication to the children of our community Jack Calbeck Memorial Award for Lifetime Sports Sponsorship Nominees Brant Branch Foresters Tim Horton’s I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW Adrian Scherders Memorial Award for Sportsmanship & Dedication This award is presented to a male or female athlete that has been registered on a team within a minor sports association in Brantford or a member of a high school or elementary team. The athlete must demonstrate sportsmanship, dedication and fair play. This special person makes a real difference on the team both on and off the playing field. Adrian Scherders Memorial Award for Sportsmanship & Dedication Beth Paulins “The only way a kid is going to practice is if it's total fun for him... and it was for me.” Wayne Gretzky George Churchill – Sports Volunteer of the Year Had the category existed during his day, George Churchill would have found himself nominated for this award for decades. His tireless work with the track and field program here in Brantford, both with the Brantford club and also with the schools, allowed Brantford to become a hub for some of the best competitions in the sport. He was the man behind the organization and execution of just about every meet during the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and even in to the 90’s. He was also the coach of Brantford’s first track and field to make the Olympic Games, with Debbie Miller in 1968. George Churchill Memorial Award for Sports Volunteer of the Year Nominees Tracy Oldroyd Suzanne Paulins “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another”. t Erma Bombeck February 21, 1927 – April 22, 1996) was a Humourist “Sport fosters many things that are good, teamwork and leadership.” Daley Thompson Decathlon Gold medal winner in 1980 and 1984 John Macklin – Coach of the Year Award Macklin began coaching and officiating track and field in Branford in 1966, and continued through until 1994. During his time, he helped to coach many athletes from Brantford who would go on to national and international competition, including the likes of Liz Polyak, Kevin Sullivan and Rick Mannen. Along the way, he became a respected official on the international stage, officiating at almost every Canadian and international meet during the 1970’s and 1980’s. On top of coaching and officiating, he also was the organizer of the Brant County Track and Filed and Cross Country championships for many years, and was heavily involved with the organization of the CWOSSA and OFSAA championships in both of these sports as well. Muhammad Ali, American Boxer “Canada is one of the most impressive countries in the world” Barack Obama “Volunteering is not a choice, it's a responsibility” George Jones Memorial Award for Lifetime Sports Volunteerism To be eligible for this award, the person must be a VOLUNTEER within a Brantford minor sports association, or with an elementary school or high school in the city of Brantford. The individual must volunteer in a role other than coach e.g. Training staff, board members, etc… This person must have been with the association/team for a minimum of 15 years, and their presence as a member of the organization has a positive impact on those with whom they interact in their role. George Jones Memorial Award for Lifetime Sports Volunteerism Hugh Coleman Nominees Ben Harris George Henry The Frank Tomlin Memorial Award Sports Person of the Year This award is named in honour of the late Frank Tomlin who passed away in 1976. Tomlin is remembered as a great sports fan that was passionate about his city and those who represented it. Gord Showler, who at the time of Frank’s death was a sponsor of Brantford’s Junior ‘B’ franchise, initiated the award. Each year, the Frank Tomlin award recognizes an individual from Brantford whose contribution to sport has had a great impact on this community. The winner of the award must be active in the sport for which they are nominated. However, work done in previous years is also taken into consideration. No individual can win the award in consecutive years but the award can be won by the same individual more than once. Jimmy Wilkes – Team of the Year When you talk about the sport of baseball in Brantford, the conversation will usually involve the Brantford Red Sox of the Inter-County Baseball League, and will inevitably include the name Jimmy Wilkes. Wilkes has been a legend of baseball in this community ever since arriving to play with the Brantford Red Sox in 1953. He was involved with the league as a player, then as an umpire, for over 30 years. His quiet leadership helped the Red Sox to several championships, as well as with the development of many players throughout the InterCounty league as well as Brantford Minor Baseball.
