Preparing walls for paint
What you might not know is that our walls are hardly ever just right before
we decorate. Generally, they’re not chemically clean and are often covered
with small holes you don’t need.
Step A:
3
Use our ready-to-use Manger’s Sugar Soap Spray to leave the surface
chemically clean so that a fresh coat of paint adheres readily.
1: Shake the bottle
2: Always wear protective gloves and cover adjacent areas prior to use
3: Spray onto the surface to be cleaned
4: For very greasy marks or surfaces, leave for one minute
5: Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
For heavily soiled areas, it’s recommended to use Manger’s Sugar Soap Concentrate or the
original Manger’s Sugar Soap powder (see Treating Problem Stains).

Fill holes and minor cracks for a smoother finish. Manger’s Lightweight
Deep Gap Filler is a professional, quality filler specially formulated from
millions of tiny glass bubbles to fill most holes and gaps in one application.
It gives a super smooth, brilliant white finish, which does not need sanding.
It’s also very fast drying so you can start decorating in 15 minutes.
Preparation Guide
Step B: (cont)
1: Cover nail and screw heads with an oil-based primer, such as Leyland or
Johnstone’s All Purpose Primer, prior to application to prevent them rusting
3
2: Stir to a smooth paste, if product is too dry add a couple of drops of
water and re-stir
3: Apply directly into the gap, ensuring it is completely filled
4: Smooth the surface with a wet knife
5: Remove excess and allow to dry for at least 15 minutes.
Treating problem stains
Use our original, and highly effective, Manger’s Sugar Soap. Its powerful
cleaning action means it can be used to clean heavily soiled and
contaminated surfaces and the low-foam formula makes it easy to apply.
It will remove dirt, grease, grime and even discolouration caused by the
accumulation of nicotine smoke.
3
1: For every litre of cleaner required, use 45g of Manger’s Sugar Soap
2: Dissolve the powder in warm water
3: Apply using a sponge, working upwards to avoid streaks
4: Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.
Manger’s Sugar Soap is also available in a convenient liquid
concentrate formula – just add warm water.

3: Ensure there is adequate ventilation when working and wear
protective gloves
4: Pour a quantity of Paint and Varnish Stripper into a suitable container
5: Apply a generous even coat onto the surface to be stripped with a
suitable brush but do not brush out
8
6: Leave for approximately 30 minutes then apply a second coat

Manger’s Clean Spirit is a highly effective water-based cleaning alternative to
White Spirit that is safer for both you and the environment. The formulation
contains all biodegradable ingredients and is virtually odourless and nonflammable. Manger’s Clean Spirit can be used to clean all water-based and
most oil-based paint spills from surfaces such as worktops, laminate flooring
and most textiles.
1: First test a small patch for colour fastness in an inconspicuous area
2: Pour a quantity of Manger’s Clean Spirit directly onto the affected area
3: Rub vigorously until the paint has been removed
4: Rinse or wash with clean water
5: Can also be used for cleaning small spills from carpets.
10
Preparation Guide
Cleaning glass surfaces
Manger’s Methylated Spirit is commonly used as a general stain remover and
household cleaner. As a solvent it evaporates quickly and doesn’t leave streaks,
which makes it ideal to clean glass.
1: Dilute 1 part Methylated Spirit to 1 part clean water
2: In warmer temperatures we would recommend using a ratio of 1 part
Methylated Spirit to 4 parts clean water
3
3: Apply using a soft cloth or spray directly onto the glass then wipe off
using paper towels
4: Rub vertically for exterior windows and horizontally for interior glass
A common myth is to use newspaper, which used to work well when it contained lampblack (which was a great
glass polish). However it doesn’t contain it anymore so do not use, as it will leave smear marks.
11
Cracks & gaps
Repairing interior
surface cracks
Manger’s Interior Filler is ideal for broad wall indoor repairs, filling cracks,
gaps and holes. It dries to a tough, smooth surface that is easy to sand and
is so strong that it will take screws and nails when fully set.
3
1: Cover nail and screw heads with an oil-based primer, such as a
Leyland or Johnstone’s All Purpose Primer, prior to application to
prevent rusting
2: Add 1 part water to 2.5 parts of Manger’s Interior Filler
3: Mix thoroughly to a smooth paste

Preparation Guide
Fixing intricate and fine
repairs in walls
Manger’s Fine Surface Filler is an ultra smooth, fine particle filler that is ideal
for intricate repairs and for filling minor holes and smoothing out surface
imperfections with no slumping, cracking or shrinking.
1: The area to be repaired should be sanded before application
2: Cover nail and screw heads with an oil-based primer, such as a Leyland
or Johnstone’s All Purpose Primer, prior to application to prevent rusting
3
3: Apply Manger’s Fine Surface Filler with a spatula, spreading a thin
layer of filler over the repair
4: Push filler well into the repair, ensuring that the repair is completely filled
5: For deeper holes, first use Manger’s All Purpose Filler or Ready Mixed
Filler and when dry add a thin layer of Fine Surface Filler
6: Remove excess filler with a spatula and allow to dry for at least 1 hour
7: Product can be sanded when dry if an even smoother finish is desired.
13
Cracks & gaps
Repair ceiling cracks
Manger’s Lightweight Deep Gap Filler fills deep gaps and holes in one
application and is ideal for awkward areas like ceilings.
1: Cover nail and screw heads with an oil-based primer, such as a
Leyland or Johnstone’s All Purpose Primer, prior to application to
prevent rusting
2: Stir to a smooth paste, if product is too dry add a couple of drops of
water and re-stir
3: Apply directly into the gap, ensuring it is completely filled
4: Smooth surface with a wet knife
5: Remove the excess and allow to dry for at least 30 minutes.
4
Fill gaps in your kitchen
or bathroom
Manger’s Kitchen & Bathroom Sealant is a multi-purpose
acetoxy cure silicone sealant that cures quickly to provide a
permanently flexible, high strength waterproof seal. It contains
a powerful anti-fungicide to prevent mould growth. It is ideal
for sealing door and window frames, but has been specifically
formulated as a sanitary sealant for gaps around baths,
showers, kitchens, taps and tiles. It adheres readily without a
primer to glass, ceramic, vitreous surfaces and painted surfaces.
14
Preparation Guide
Fill gaps in your kitchen or bathroom: (cont)
1: Any loose or flaking material, and old sealant, should be removed before application
2: Glass, metal and aluminium should be cleaned with a solvent cleaner such as white spirit prior to application
for optimum results
3: Porous surfaces may require priming - test a small area first
4: Apply the sealant in a continuous motion, making sure that all air pockets are eliminated
5: Using a dry spatula, tool the sealant with light pressure to spread the material against the joint surfaces
6: For the best performance, the sealant should only be bonded to the two facing sides of the joint
7: Excess uncured sealant should be wiped and removed with a solvent cleaner.
Gaps between skirting boards and
joints subject to movement
Manger’s Decorator’s Caulk delivers a permanently flexible acrylic seal that will
outperform traditional paste fillers when used in areas subject to movement. It
can be used both indoors and out – between brick, concrete, stone, timber and
pointing around door/window frames providing up to 10 years life.
3
1: Surfaces may be damp but must be clean and free from dust, dirt, frost,
grease and other contamination
2: Cut nozzle to the required joint size at an angle of 45°
3: Gun sealant firmly into the joint to provide a good solid fill
4: Joints 6mm wide up to 15mm wide can be sealed to a matching depth
5: Reduce depth of deeper joints to maximum 12mm using Manger’s
Expanding Foam Filler
6: Finish sealant run slightly proud to allow for normal drying/shrinkage
7: Paintable after approximately 1 hour. Please note drying times can vary
depending on temperature, relative humidity and the joint size.
15
Cracks & gaps
Large, awkward and
irregular gaps
Manger’s Expanding Foam Filler is a one-part polyurethane foam that
expands rapidly on contact with air. It will mould itself to the most awkward
gaps, cavities and cracks providing a strong permanent filler that can be
finished to suit a wide range of applications.
5
1: Surfaces should be free from dust and grease
2: Turn can upside down and shake vigorously for 30 seconds
3: Screw applicator and tube firmly on to valve
4: Hold can in an upside-down position arranging your fingers comfortably on the applicator head
5: Apply pressure to the applicator easing the foam into the cavity at a
controlled rate
8
6: Only half fill the cavity as the foam will continue to expand.
7: The foam will remain tacky for 3-4 minutes. Clean off any spillages
whilst foam is still wet using a dry cloth
8: Expanding Foam Filler can usually be cut and shaped after approximately 45 minutes
9: After 2-3 hours (when curing is complete) it can be sanded down,
rendered, plastered, smooth-filled or painted.

Papering
Hanging heavier
wallpaper or in areas
prone to condensations
Manger’s Ready Mixed Wallpaper paste is a super strong, ready to use
adhesive with easy slide properties for easier papering. It is suitable for
hanging all types of heavyweight and luxury wallcoverings, including
paper and fabric backed vinyls, tiling on a roll, hessians, grasscloths and
polystyrene tiles, veneers and covings. It is also great to use in most areas,
especially in kitchens, bathrooms and behind radiators, where fluctuations
in temperature and humidity levels may occur.
6
1: Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from dust
2: Size absorbent surfaces
3: Sand low or non-absorbent surfaces, such as gloss painted walls, to
provide a key and cross line with lining paper
4: Manger’s Ready Mixed Wallpaper paste contains an algaecide,
however areas with a high risk of mould growth should be treated
with Manger’s Fungicidal Spray beforehand
5: Always follow the wallpaper manufacturer’s instructions
6: Generously apply adhesive to paper with a brush or roller, unless
otherwise instructed, paying particular attention to edges
7: Take care to keep printed surface free from adhesive
8: When hanging your border, finishing overlapping seams or for general
wallcovering repairs, use Manger’s Border & Overlap Adhesive.
20
Preparation Guide
Sizing walls prior
to papering
Sizing is an important step in creating a good foundation for wallpaper, it
creates a uniform surface that allows wallpaper to dry smoothly and last for
years. Sizing coats the wall to so that your wallpaper applies a uniform way,
and it will reduce the amount of paste a wall will absorb. One of the simplest
ways to size your walls is to coat them with a thinned down version of the
adhesive that will ultimately be used when applying your wallpaper. It also
allows easier adjustability for a longer time with the paper for better
edge matching.
1
1: Sprinkle the contents of one 195g sachet into 12 Litre cold water,
mixing briskly for 30 seconds to ensure dispersion
2: Leave for 3 minutes then stir thoroughly
3: Alternatively, if you are using Manger’s Ready Mixed Wallpaper Paste,
dilute with an equal amount of clean water
4
4: Using a roller, apply to the wall area to be papered and brush in
around the edges
5: All the walls being papered should be sized at the same time;
beginning at the point where the wallpapering will begin
6: The wallpaper hanging can begin almost as soon as the application of
the size is done.
21
Papering
Mend wallpaper repairs
Manger’s Border & Repair Adhesive is a handy tube of our super
strength gel. It will stick to gloss and emulsion paint, and is suitable
for sticking down overlapping seams or curled edges as well as general
wallpaper repairs.
1
1: Using the nozzle to target the correct area, apply adhesive to the wall
where the wallpaper is to be repaired
2: Using a spatula, evenly spread adhesive on the wall
3: Moisten the back of vinyl and heavier wallcoverings with clean water
4: Press down firmly
5: Wipe off excess from the surface of the paper immediately with a
damp cloth.

1: Always follow the border manufacturer’s instructions
3
2: Cut the border to required length
3: Evenly spread adhesive onto the border to ensure complete coverage
4: Position border on top of the wallpaper
5: Smooth down firmly with a sponge or brush
6: Take care to keep printed surface free from adhesive.
23
Tiling
Applying wall tiles
Manger’s Non Slip Wall Tile Adhesive has excellent non-slip properties
making it ideal for fixing most types and sizes of ceramic wall tiles. This
easy to apply adhesive is suitable for use in bathrooms and kitchens and is
specially formulated to allow time for adjustment after fixing.
6
1: Surfaces must be dry, free from dust, dirt, grease and other loose material
2: Wallpaper, emulsion paint or other weakly bonded finishes should
be removed
3: Score the surface of glazed tiles to provide a good key
4: Timber or plasterboard partitioning must be rigidly fixed
5: Treat timber surfaces in areas of water contact e.g. showers, with a
water resistant sealer before tiling commences
8
6: Apply enough adhesive to cover an area of approx. 0.5m squared
using a notched spreader
7: For frequently wet areas, e.g. showers, spread adhesive as a 3mm
continuous bed and lightly rib the surface with a notched spreader
8: Bed tiles into the adhesive using a twisting action to ensure complete
contact between the tile and adhesive
9: For tiles that are studded on the back, ensure sufficient adhesive is
applied to cover them
10: Remove any excess adhesive from the face of the tiles with a damp
cloth within 20 minutes
11: Leave tiles for at least 24 hours before grouting
12: The contents of one 10 Litre tub of Manger’s Non Slip Tile Adhesive
will tile approximately 11 square metres.

What’s the best way to remove existing
paper from the wall?
The key to successful removal is water. The common factor about most wallpaper adhesives is that if you wet them
they will reactivate and become soft. However most wallcoverings have some form of moisture protection on the face
of them. To successfully remove the paper, you need to get the water through the coating and into the adhesive. In
most cases the use of a steamer will give the best results. You should be able to find one from a tool hire shop or
your local decorating store from between £5 - £15 per day or you might be able to find one to buy from £30.
When should I use fungicidal wash?
Manger’s Fungicidal Wash is a preparatory sterilising solution designed to be applied to bare walls to kill any
mould spores before decorating. Whilst it’s seen to be most beneficial in areas that might have a moisture problem,
like kitchens, bathrooms and cellars, it’s actually safe to use in any area of the house. Manger’s also has a ready to
use spray version in the range for convenience, when tackling small areas of mould growth.

What is ‘keying’?
It is mostly considered necessary for surfaces to be as smooth as possible for the best finish when decorating.
However there are circumstances where it is thought to be required to roughen up the surface first in order to give
an adhesive something to grab onto.
When tiling or papering, surfaces should be clean, dry and free from any loose or flaking material and keying will
help to remove any imperfections, such as loose grit, filler or flaky paint etc. Keying is a straightforward process
where the surface is rubbed down with, glass or sand paper. Light grooves may also be added afterwards but this is
dependant on the type of surfaces. Once the keying is complete it is essential that the surface is cleaned down with
Manger’s Sugar Soap to remove any dust, as this will also hinder adhesion if left on.
What paint should I choose?
Generally, the best paint for your internal walls and ceilings is emulsion. There are three main finishes of emulsion:
Matt
Vinyl matt emulsion gives a non-shiny finish that is perfect for hiding small imperfections on walls or ceilings; a
glossier finish will reflect light and highlight any flaws. Vinyl matt emulsion might not wear quite as well as shinier
emulsions so look out for durable matt emulsions made with acrylic.
Soft Sheen
Vinyl soft sheen emulsion has a subtle soft-sheen finish, which reflects light back into a room and is more durable
than vinyl matt. It’s great for areas that might need a light wash once in a while.
Silk
Vinyl silk emulsion offers a high-sheen finish and is the most durable of all the emulsion paints. Use for rooms
prone to moisture such as condensation. If you’re considering a silk product, but you prefer a lower sheen finish, you
might also be interested in buying paint made specifically for kitchens and bathrooms, which generally comes in a
mid-sheen finish.

What order should I paint my room in?
Paint the ceilings first and then all your walls. All the woodwork should be painted last.
Do I need to use lining paper?
Use lining paper to cross-line a wall if you’re hanging embossed or expensive wallcoverings, or if the wall has
imperfections that might show through your wallpaper. Lining paper is usually hung horizontally so the joins don’t
match up with those on the top layer. If you’re going to paint over the lining paper, hang it vertically.
What is sizing?
Sizing, or size, is a weakened mix of wallpaper adhesive that is used to fill up a porous surface, i.e. plaster. It’s purpose
is to stop the wall from taking too much moisture from the back of the wallpaper and causing it to peel when dry.

What brush should I use to paint?
There are 2 main types of brushes to choose from: synthetic and natural bristles.
Synthetic brushes are very hard wearing and can last up to 5 times as long as a natural brush. As synthetic bristles
do not absorb large amounts of water and swell up they do not cause tramlines to appear in the paint. Their
structure produces a fine finish with all water-based paints.
Natural bristle has a structure that allows it to take and hold paint within the brush. In addition, the split ends
of bristle brushes help to produce a fine finish with traditional solvent paint but they do not perform as well with
water-based paints.
Brushes come in many sizes. As a rule of thumb, the larger the area you are painting, the larger the brush that you
should use. For walls a 2” or 3” brush is required for cutting in, whilst a 1” or 2” brush will give you more flexibility
when painting doors, skirting boards & architraves.
Why should I use a different adhesive for
hanging my border?
Manger’s Border & Overlap Adhesive and Manger’s Border & Repair Adhesive are different to Manger’s Wallpaper
Adhesive as they are not starch based. This issue is not the border itself but the surface it is being hung onto. We
would always recommend that when hanging borders you use the appropriate adhesive to stick “vinyl to vinyl”.
