BORDE HILL GARDEN
and head gardener’s tour - West Sussex
Described as ‘One of the country’s truly great gardens’
by Country Life Magazine, Borde Hill is more than just
a beautiful and historic garden. It is nestled in 200
acres of English heritage listed Sussex parkland and
woodland, with wonderful views across the Sussex
Weald and the magnificent Ouse Valley. It is home
to a nationally important collection of rare shrubs,
champion trees and exotic plants. The formal garden is
overlooked by an impressive Elizabethan Tudor mansion,
which dates from 1598.
The Tour : 2pm-3pm
The Head Gardener will do a tour of the formal gardens.
The Garden
There are 17 acres of formal garden to explore with nine
gardens in all, each one planted as a distinctive ‘garden
room’. This tradition began in 1892 by the current
owner’s great grandfather, and ensures an abundance of
colour and interest throughout the seasons.

Trips and Special Events
Walton-On-The-Naze
Walton is a traditional seaside town on the east coast,
unique in that it is surrounded on three sides by the
sea. Three miles of gently shelving sandy beaches,
facing south-east, stretch from Frinton to the Naze.
To the north, the sea sweeps round the Naze into the
backwaters, known as Hamford Water and the Walton
Channel stretches right down to Walton Mere, only 300
yards from the main beach. The Naze, as well as being
a natural open space, is a Site of Special Scientific
Interest (SSSI) famed for its fossils found in the Red
Crag cliffs.
With the second longest pier in the country, Walton is
also known for its yacht club and marina and its iconic
tower at The Naze from where panoramic views can
be enjoyed of the Walton backwaters, Harwich and
Felixstowe.
Either relax by the sea, go on the pier, shop, visit the
Naze Tower and Art Gallery or go on a wildlife boat trip
for 2 hours where you will observe the seals, the choice
is yours.

Highclere Castle is one of England’s most beautiful
Victorian Castles set amidst 1,000 acres of spectacular
parkland. The Carnarvon family has lived at Highclere
since 1679, and the current Castle stands on the site
of an earlier house, which in turn was built on the
foundations of the medieval palace owned by the
Bishops of Winchester for some 800 years.
Downton Abbey
Longstanding friend of the Carnarvon family, Julian
Fellowes had Highclere Castle in mind as he wrote
Downton Abbey. He often commented he wanted a
house which spectacularly testified to the confidence
and soaring optimism of the Edwardian period.
The Park and the Follies
The 1,000 acres of sweeping parkland provide peace
and tranquillity, with breath taking views across the
rolling downlands of North Hampshire and the Kennet
Valley.
No motorised wheelchairs in the castle. Wheelchairs available (bookable in advance).
The Castle Kitchen serves light lunches with hot and cold food.
There is a lot of ground to cover. Your choice of how much you wish to do. Plenty of seated areas.

Meeting our guide, we will spend the morning in
Clerkenwell, London’s Secret Village where your guide
reveals the Clerk’s Well which gave the area its name.
We view the site of an underground prison, monastic
foundations, London’s most unusual restaurant and an
18th century courthouse. Follow the footsteps of the
radicals such as Lenin, Marx and Wat Tyler and hear how
this area has now become one of the most fashionable
parts of town.
Having a break in the middle of the day, you will be
informed of the best choices of cafes, restaurants and
pubs serving food.
The afternoon will be to visit St John’s Gate, home of
the Museum of the Order of St John. The Museum tells a
unique and fascinating story – the story of the Order of
St John – from its origins in eleventh century Jerusalem,
through to its role today with St John Ambulance and
the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem.
This story highlights how, from founding a hospital to
care for sick pilgrims in eleventh century Jerusalem, St
John has maintained its caring role to the present day,
working on numerous humanitarian projects worldwide.
The museum occupies two sites in
Clerkenwell: St John’s Gate, which
dates from 1504; and the Priory
Church of St John with its surviving
twelfth century Crypt.
The group will have a guided tour
of the Gate with a knowledgeable in
house guide.
