We have started the New Year with a new milestone for people with hearing or speech impairments the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced in January 2013 that enhancements to 911 services for Canadians with hearing or speech impairments will enable Canadians who have hearing or speech impairments to communicate with 911 call centres via text message. Telephone and wireless companies must upgrade their networks to support this new feature by January 24, 2014. For more information and how it will be rolled out please go directly to their website for further details and latest updates: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/com100/2013/r130124.htm We are pleased to announce a new and innovative way to connect at our AGM, which will be held on May 11, 2013. Board Member Deborah Scott will facilitate “From Conversation to Action … at the Dream Works Revisited Café” which will give members of CHHA-BC the opportunity to participate in dialogue on future of CHHA-BC. (Please see page 5 for further details and information.) CHHA National Conference is going to be on May 23-25, 2013 at Fantasy Land Hotel, located in West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta. The theme is “Here We Go Again…the fun continues with a young at heart.” A call for nominations is announced for all positions on the CHHA-BC Executive Committee (aka the Board) to serve a three-year term starting on May 2013. Positions on the Board include: the President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and two Members-at-Large. Nominations may be submitted in writing to the CHHA-BC Nominations Committee, at least 30 days before the Annual General Meeting to be held in May 2013. Each nomination shall indicate which office the candidate wishes to fill, include a brief biographical sketch of, and a brief statement by the candidate. Both candidates and their nominators must be Regular Members. By signing the nomination paper, a candidate expressly indicates willingness to serve in the indicated position, to participate in meetings by email, Skype and in person, and to promote the aims of CHHA-BC Chapter in an active manner. Volunteer, Work Experience Students, & Staff Christmas Luncheon-December 12, 2012 Starting in November 2012, we have had the opportunity to enjoy working with “Work Experience Students” as well as our regular volunteers. The students compiled hospital kits, collected valuable computer data, stuffed receipts into envelopes, newsletter mail-outs, and much more. To thank the students for their work we had a Christmas Luncheon and invited their Work Experience Facilitator, our regular volunteers, and a few guests. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was especially nice to chat with the students and to get to know them on a personal basis. Some students have returned to complete another contract. Attention Managing Hearing Loss and Speech Reading Instructors Submitted by Deborah Scott MHLSR Instructors Connect MHLSR Instructors Connect aims to keep the Managing Hearing Loss and Speech Reading instructors together. We support each other in our ventures, share ideas and resources. We meet bi-monthly, generally the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 pm (January 23; March 26; May 28th etc). For the past year we have been using Skype and IM for our meetings and will soon be moving to Go To Meeting technology...www.gotomeeting.com Announcement: Our March meeting is being pushed into April (April 9th at 7 pm) to accommodate our guest speaker. We will be joined by Daniel Paccioretti MSc Aud(C), Western Canada FS Sales Manager of Phonak Canada. Dan is excited about being able to introduce us to some new technology for remote microphone access. This meeting will be our first opportunity to explore conducting our meetings online through the use of Go To Meeting. Mark April 9th on your calendar and join us! CHHA-BC 2 Spring 2013 Resource Centre Report–November 2012-January 2013 Submitted by Sharon Perry Busy!!! That’s what we are here for. Seven Secondary School Students have been volunteering their time to make hospital kits, prepare databases, test and clean equipment and other such duties. 153 hours were volunteered. Two of the students asked to come back for the next semester Sharon Perry which goes until mid-March. We have two new student volunteers as well. The program is part of WEX 12 which includes either Business Management, Entrepreneurship, Hospitality, Human Services or Bridges. It is a requirement for their graduation. We are so thankful they chose to volunteer with us. We thank Kathy, the Work Experience Facilitator, for making this all happen. It’s a win-win situation. tion in the Maple Ridge Lions Club Information Fair March 23 and the Kelowna Health Show April 27 and 28, 2013. We love attending these types of events to let people know who we are and what we do. Volunteers decorated the two Christmas trees. The office looked very festive for the Christmas season. On December 12 we hosted our Staff and Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Pizza and pop was enjoyed by all!!! (Sweets and oranges as well.) Upcoming outreach activities include Sysco Food Systems Trade Show in Langley Feb.27, participa- Sharon Perry Leslee Scott in Kelowna has been very busy attending to requests that have come in through the Resource Centre. Leslee presented to the Adams Lake Band. They enjoyed her talk and invited her back. As for Speech Reading, courses were held in Kelowna, Salt Spring Island, Victoria, and Abbotsford. Plans are being made for courses in Nanaimo, Kamloops and Chilliwack. 184 Hospital Kits are complete, with many more in the production stage. Please promote them in your community. There is no charge for the kits. We would like to see them available in the hospitals and care facilities throughout BC. A Tribute to Fred Clark Fred Clark left us peacefully with his family at his side on November 18th, 2012. He is survived by his wife of 55 years; Joan, his sister Dorothy, and his four children Lisa, Peter, Paul, and Lael and their spouses as well as a large extended family and long-time friends. Fred was the best Papa ever to his 11 grandchildren who have wonderful memories of Papa at the cabin in Point Roberts and his love for ice cream. Fred taught ten years in Oliver then in 1967 he moved to Tsawwassen Junior Secondary as a teacher and then counsellor. In 1977 Fred transferred to open the new Seaquam Secondary School in North Delta where he taught until 1988. Fred very much enjoyed the staff and his ability to help the chilJuly 1932 dren. He retired due to a progressive, profound hearing loss. In retirement Fred advoNovember 2012 cated for the hard of hearing by being a proud member and president of both the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association. He enjoyed curling, the companionship of his dog Buddy, and morning coffee with friends at McDonalds. Fred was an active member of the Oliver Kinsmen Club as well as a committed coach for several minor athletic teams including hockey, softball and soccer. A memorial service for Fred was held at Saint David's Anglican Church in Tsawwassen on Saturday, November 24th, 2012 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Irene Thomas Hospice, The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association, or the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He touched many people’s lives.
