The ends of the bones are cushioned by cartilage, a slippery and tough tissue produced and maintained by its own specialized cells. The cartilage, joint fluid, and underlying bone work together like a shock absorber allowing flexible joint function. Cartilage lacks a direct blood supply, so nutrients must pass into the cartilage from surrounding tissue. These nutrients sustain cartilage cells and provide the components necessary to maintain a healthy cartilage structure. When a cat is in motion there is tremendous pressure on the joint. In a healthy joint, cartilage production and breakdown are in balance. Scientists are not sure about all the factors that cause cartilage breakdown; however, they have discovered enzymes that play a role. Cartilage breakdown can exceed the process of production, especially, though not only, in very active and older cats. Joint health can then be affected resulting in less flexibility. You might notice that your cat does not get up easily, or is reluctant to climb stairs or their cat tower. How do I know if my cat needs Dasuquin®? Dasuquin is a joint health supplement which helps maintain cartilage structure and inhibits the enzymes that break down cartilage components. It may be a good time to ask your veterinarian about Dasuquin if you notice that your cat is less eager to jump or play or otherwise appears less mobile. Your veterinarian will examine your cat to determine if he/she could benefit from Dasuquin. If your veterinarian has already recommended Dasuquin, the sooner it is started the more opportunity your pet will have to respond. Your veterinarian may also suggest using Dasuquin as a protective measure. Dasuquin may also be used to help support cartilage following joint surgery. What is Dasuquin? Dasuquin is the #1 joint health brand recommended by veterinarians.u It is the most complete joint support supplement available for cats and goes beyond standard glucosamine supplements. Dasuquin contains NMX1000®* avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), decaffeinated tea, FCHG49®* glucosamine, and TRH122®* chondroitin sulfate in sprinkle capsules. What do the ingredients in Dasuquin do? The combination of the glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supports cartilage matrix production and helps block enzymes in joints that break down cartilage. These ingredients together have been shown in published studies to protect joint cartilage better than either one alone. ASU stands for avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, an ingredient obtained from avocados and soybeans. ASU has been shown to support joint function and comfort levels. ASU complements the positive effects of the glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in Dasuquin. Cell culture studies have shown that glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate plus ASU works better than glucosamine/ chondroitin sulfate alone at inhibiting mediators involved in cartilage breakdown. Lastly, the highly absorbable tea in Dasuquin is rich in antioxidants, which have a positive effect on cartilage as well as on overall body defenses. Tea also supports wellness. What should I look for when giving Dasuquin? Observe your cat closely, and notice whether your cat seems more comfortable doing those activities he/ she seemed reluctant doing or had some trouble doing previously. Changes in your cat’s comfort level may occur gradually. Allow time for your cat to respond. It may take 4–6 weeks, though some cats may respond sooner. My veterinarian mentioned that Dasuquin can be used to help maintain the health of my cat’s bladder. How does this work? Some veterinarians may recommend Dasuquin to help maintain urinary bladder health. The inner lining of the bladder wall is protected by a layer, which contains some of the same compounds as are found in cartilage. This layer keeps urine and the waste products contained within it from seeping into and affecting the lining. Since the chondroitin sulfate found in Dasuquin is available to more than just cartilage cells, the bladder may use it to help support this protective layer. Where do I purchase Dasuquin? Dasuquin is available from your veterinarian. As your pet’s health care professional, your veterinarian is best qualified to decide if Dasuquin may benefit your cat and can monitor your pet’s response, making any adjustments necessary to the administration level. How is Dasuquin administered? Dasuquin For Cats capsules contain a tasty natural chicken and tuna flavored powder. The capsule should be opened and contents mixed with or sprinkled over the food. The capsule may instead be “pilled” if more convenient. The recommended initial administration period is 4–6 weeks. For cats under 10 lbs, administer one capsule sprinkled on food daily. For cats 10 lbs and over, administer two capsules sprinkled on food daily. Once desired response is obtained, capsules may be administered every other day to maintain your cat. Number of capsules administered may be increased at any time depending on your cat’s needs. For more detailed administration guidelines, please see package. Are there any safety concerns with Dasuquin? The ingredients in Dasuquin have been evaluated in a safety study in cats, and no adverse effects were noted from administration. There are no known contraindications or known interactions between Dasuquin and any drug or nutritional supplement.
