The Chuckey-Doak High School baseball team
enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in
recent memory in 2015.
The Black Knights went 8-2 in District 2-AA
competition to finish tied atop the regular season
standings.
Senior pitcher Daniel Beddingfield played a big
part in that, and now he will get the opportunity
to compete at the next level.
Beddingfield held a signing ceremony at the
high school Friday morning to announce that he
would be continuing his athletic and academic
career at Hiwassee College this fall.
“This feels good,” Beddingfield said. “I’ve waited to play at the college level since I was little,
whether it was football, basketball or baseball
– I’ve just always had that dream.”
“It was great to have the opportunity to go down
there and try out, and when they told me ‘We’ll
offer you a scholarship’, that just made my day,
Recent ChuckeyDoak High School
graduate Daniel
Beddingfield signed

The Greene County prep
baseball scene featured a lot
of quality pitching in 2015 and
that was reflected last month
when the Tennessee Baseball
Coaches Association released
its All-State teams.
Three local athletes received
All-State honors – North
Greene senior Troy Hall,
Chuckey-Doak junior Tanner
Barkley and South Greene
junior Justin Casteel.
Hall, who is headed to Mars
Hill College, was a perfect 90 on the mound with a 1.44
earned run average. He worked
53.3 innings and struck out
85.
Hall was also one of North
Greene’s top hitters at the
plate as he went for a .402
average with 35 hits, 13 walks,
31 runs scored, 28 RBI and
seven stolen bases.
Hall helped the Huskies to
their fourth straight Region
1-A championship and a state
sectional berth.
Also last month he was
named All-State by the Tennessee Sports Writers Association for the second consecutive
year.
Barkley led Chuckey-Doak
both on the mound and at the
plate as the Black Knights
shared the District 2-AA regular season title.
He had a 2.87 earned run
average with six wins and six
complete games in 14 appearances. He struck out 117 and
walked 27 in 70.2 innings of
work. Opponents batted just
.188 off of him.
At the plate he hit .418 with
38 hits, 32 RBI and 22 runs
scored. He added eight doubles, five triples and six home
runs.
Like Hall and Barkley,
Casteel was a leader for South
Greene both offensively and on
the rubber.
For the year he was 9-4
with a 1.71 earned run aver-
age. Opponents hit just .190
off of the junior. He struck out
139 in 78 innings, including a
game in which he recorded 18
strikeouts.
Casteel batted .358 with six
doubles, a triple and a home
run. He walked 11 times and
stole eight bases.
He led South Greene to a
runner-up finish in Region 1-A
and then had a solid pitching
effort in the Rebels’ 4-0 loss
to eventual state champion
Grace Christian in the sectional round.
ball Report website recently

Astros Rally From Large Deficit But Fall In 11
BY TATE RUSSELL
SUN SPORTS EDITOR
The Burlington Royals built
a big lead with a fast start
and then relied on some explosive hitting late to take an
extra-inning win from the
Greeneville Astros in their
series opener on Friday.
Burlington jumped in front
5-0 after one frame before the
Astros came back to force extra
innings. A two-run blast in the
11th inning by Brandon Dulin
then capped a 15-hit night for
Royals in their 9-7 win at Pioneer Park.
In the top of the 11th, the
Royals designated hitter sent
a no-doubt shot over the right
field wall to score two runs and
erased the Astros’ comeback
from five down.
The Royals came out of the
gate swinging on Friday night
and Greeneville’s defense
could not catch up in the first
inning.
Starting pitcher Alberto
Abreu retired the first two batters in order but a close call on
a 2-2 count seemed to rattle
him which led to a walk fol-
lowed by a powerful double
from Dulin. The deep swat into
the corner scored Austin Bailey and propelled the Royals to
a 5-run inning. Dulin finished
3-for-6 with three RBIs.
Ben Johnson followed with
a line-drive single past second baseman Ford Stainback
that scored Dulin. Johnson
advanced to second on an
errant throw to the plate. Angello Castellano came to plate
next and sent a ground ball to
third that was booted to allow
Johnson to score from second.
Xavier Fernandez made
it 5-0 when he sent a double
into left to score runners from
first and second. It also ended
Abreu’s day.
Greeneville put a dent in the
deficit in their half of the first
inning. Osvaldo Duarte led off
the side with a walk and Stainback followed by reaching on
an error. Connor Goedert put
the Astros’ first run on the
board with an RBI single to
shallow center field. Brauly
Mejia drove in Stainback on
another line drive to center.
Lachlan Medlen took over
on the mound for Greeneville
three strike outs.
After falling behind
6-3,
Greeneville
fought their way back
into the game with
a three-run seventh
inning. Luis Payono
got the explosive
side started with a
double that bounced
off the top of the
wall in left-center.
A walk and hit batter loaded the bases
for Randy Cesar who
hit a ground ball to
the first baseman.
Catcher Xavier Fernandez could not

allowed.
In the eighth inning, Osvaldo
Jake Kalish took the win for Duarte found the perfect spot
Burlington. He threw the final and ripped a triple down the
four innings, allowing three right field line that scooted into
hits, with three walks and
the corner. The ball stalled on
the wall and gave Luis Payano
a chance to score from first for
the go-ahead run, giving the
home team a 7-6 lead going
into the ninth inning.
Greeneville looked like a
huge defensive inning was
going to carry them to victory
in the top of the ninth, but a
pitching blunder kept Burlington alive. With runners on first
and second with no outs ,Dulin
hit a shot up the middle but
Duarte made a great break on
it to start a 6-4-3 double play.
With a runner on third
Greeneville just needed to
retire Johnson, who came to
the plate next. But before that
could happen, Salvador Montano let a wild pitch get away
to allow Jose Martinez to score
from third.
Greeneville had a chance to
take the game in the bottom of
the ninth but could not put a
runner in scoring position.
Greeneville could not do anything in extra innings either to
regain control.
The Astros and Royals are
back in action today starting
at 6 p.m. at Pioneer Park.
