Privately owned & published by Business Enhancements. All rights reserved.
With Thanksgiving behind us and the holiday season in full swing this is a perfect time
to express some of the things we are thankful for right here in our own community. We
are blessed with many kind and caring people who give of their time and talents to help
their community friends and family. We are blessed with charitable organizations
helping people in many ways and great businesses that step up to work with these
organizations and non-profits to ensure their success. One of those special non-profit
projects is the “charity calendar” the brainchild and result of hard work from Bernie
Friberg of Badger Realty. This charitable project is multi-layered with positive goodwill
from inspiring and nurturing artist talents, to promoting and honoring our beautiful “neck
of the woods”, to helping and giving to charities in need. You can be part of this
wonderful project while shopping for your loved ones over the holidays. Who wouldn’t
love a special calendar of local photos especially knowing that 100% of the purchase
will serve members of their community and families in need? Read on and please help
by buying one or more of these fabulous calendars.
(See insert in this issue of Fryeburg Town Matters!)
Another very exciting year with 70 photographers, submitting over 500 photos for
consideration in the 6th annual MWV Photo Contest. Judging took place in early
October with results kept secret until the unveiling of the “2014 Calendar for Charities”
on Nov 13th . It is with much gratitude to our 26 Sponsors, that this year 100% of ALL
calendars SOLD will go directly to the 3 local Charity recipients; Starting Point
Services, Mother Seton House and The Miranda Leavitt Diabetes Fund. With 900
calendars printed at $10 each that represents
$9,000 in fundraising opportunity for these local
non-profit organizations before year's end.
Congratulations to the 6 winners of this year’s
contest; Students; Alex Fauver & Nicole Stolarski.
Amateurs Dr. Michael
McLeod & 2nd Aliana

WELCOME TO FRYEBURG - Two Black Dogs Country Pub
There are so many wonderful things happening in Fryeburg including two new thrift shops, a
new Subway Restaurant, a new meat market and rumor has it, possibly a new craft store
soon. As many have probably noticed there is a new restaurant (well, new to Fryeburg)
opening soon on Route 302 across from the Jockey Cap Store called Two Black Dogs
Country Pub. The Two Black Dogs Country Pub originally opened in North Conway in May
of 2011. The owners, Leigh and Bill are well known for their quality food and service and will
surely be missed in North Conway Village but certainly worthy of the drive from their loyal
customers as they open their new home in Fryeburg.
Bill and Leigh have over 50 years of combined restaurant experience. Leigh as bartender and manager of the front of the
house, while Bill is the chef and runs the kitchen. They have been working diligently with remodeling and decorating the
building which was most recently operated by Beef and Ski on Route 302. With their flare for atmosphere, great country pub
foods, and friendly , welcoming service they are perfect for a long and prosperous future in Fryeburg.
Two Black Dogs was named after their two black dogs, Jack and Stump. Jack is a bullmastiff, black lab mix and was hit by a
car, Christmas Eve. Fortunately he is fully healed and enjoying life. Stump is a Rottweiler, Bassett Hound mix and is a refuge
from New Orleans and hurricane Katrina. The two are a large part of the family and deserve to have a restaurant named after
them, but Jack and Stump’s restaurant didn’t fit, hence Two Black Dogs Country Pub.
The restaurant is fashioned after a traditional English Pub. Notable regulars like fish and chips, bangers in a blanket and steak
and stout pie are features on the menu. But, unique creative award winning dishes such as roasted tomato torte and smoked
salmon baked brie liven up the New American cuisine. All items are made from scratch, beginning with the soups and
dressings, all the way to the homemade desserts. English porters, stouts, ales and craft beers are plentiful, along with the local
favorites and usual domestics.
The restaurant is destine to become one of the local favorites! The guests and tourists will enjoy the comfort at their restaurant
while relaxing and enjoyable their evening. Space allows for large groups whether it be family gatherings, group outings, or
business meetings. Bill and Leigh will see to your every need in detail!
As Bill likes to say - “Welcome, come, sit, and stay!!!!! Be a good dog!!!!! “ With good humor, great food, and outstanding customer service Two Black Dogs has the winning combination. Watch for there big opening really soon, just in time for the holidays! Be sure to stop in with a friendly welcome and wish them great success here in Fryeburg!

Fryeburg Plaza, Rte 302 • Go on first thing in the morning, before 9 am.
• Clear all your cookies and cache, and make sure your pop-up blocker is off.
• Be patient but persistent.
If you're still having trouble, contact a Maine-based Navigator or Certified
Application Consultant (CAC). Sacopee Valley Health Center has two CACs, and
Western Maine Community Action has Navigators. These people can meet with you
in person to help you through the process.
Second, I've heard a lot of misconceptions about the program when talking to
people. Whatever your political opinions about this law, you should make sure you
have the facts straight:
• One major purpose of the Affordable Care Act is to make it affordable for every
one to buy health insurance.
• MANY people will qualify for tax credits – anyone who makes between 100%
and 400% of the federal poverty limit. If you make between $11,490 and
$45,960, and you're the only person in your household, you should qualify for
lower premiums. For a family of four, it's $23,550 to $94,200.
• If you make less than that, Medicaid was supposed to cover you, but Maine
decided not to expand the program, so nothing has changed for you.
• If you can't afford health insurance – if the premiums for the plans available
cost more than 8% of your household income – you won't be penalized for not
buying it.

BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO WELCOME NEW BUSINESSES
'& $"
"
The key to success in building a healthy business community in any small town is
to create an economic development plan that identifies the community's strengths
and minimizes its weaknesses. It is very important that the bulk of the citizenry is
included in the planning and execution.
A first step is to bring the community, organizations and municipality together to
form a vision and set goals for local economic improvement, including as many
community members as we can to ensure that goals are shared. A core group of
community leaders can keep the planning effort going forward and on track.

Currently the Fryeburg Comprehensive Planning Committee is working on an
update. Once the new plan is outlined it will be presented to the public. A current
Comp plan is one important element. This will help in an analysis of local economic
and social conditions. Also, most recently the Fryeburg Business Association Board
of Directors presented a request to work directly with the Fryeburg Selectmen
toward a economic vision and plan to create a business friendly atmosphere and
pro-active goal for helping relief the tax burden placed on residential taxpayers.
They suggested a tighter budget control combined with a more aggressive business
development to help diversify the tax base. Businesses bring big tax dollars to the
community! The Selectmen were very receptive to workshops and discussions,
recognizing that the added burden passed down from the state and the needs of
the schools combined with the needs of the town itself are all contributing to a major
burden and concern to many and forward action and planning need to be priorities
as we move on. Community voices and input are welcome. Please email your
thoughts, ideas, and concerns to FBA@fryeburgbusiness.com. Working together is
the solution because we’re all in this together.
The Fryeburg Library by librarian, Donnette Barnes
Janet and I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving holiday and was able to
spend quality time with family and/or friends. Thanksgiving usually gets you
thinking about all the things you are grateful for in your life. I am grateful to have
the opportunity of this great job as Librarian here at the Fryeburg Public Library.
It is truly a pleasure to choose books, audios, DVDs for our patrons’ requests
and other items that I feel will be read/watched and enjoyed by many. (and do
not forget we have a book drop slot in our front door for your convenience of
returning items during our closed hours) It is always a pleasure to see our
patrons when they come in to use whatever serves they require here at the
library. Please never stop coming in and making our days so enjoyable because
we are so thankful for you.
Speaking of ordering books, we have just received 27 new Large Print books, a
new book order from our regular supplier and some new DVDs since I last
reported. For the Downton Abbey fans a new book called “Behind the Scenes at
Downton Abbey: the official pass to the set, the actors, and the drama” by
Emma Rowley. Also a reminder to everyone that the new fourth season of
Downton Abbey will air on PBS stations in January. If you have not had the
pleasure of watching the series, stop by the library and start with the Season
One DVD. I am sure you will be hooked on the series, just as I was the first time
I watched the beginning of this terrific show. We also have “The Four Doors: a
guide to joy, freedom, and a meaningful life” by Richard Paul Evans, “Hard
Luck” (#8 in The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series) by Jeff Kinney, “Darkness Falls”
(#3 in The Survivors series) by Erin Hunter, “The Tattered Quilt” by Wanda E
Brunstetter (for Amish author fans), a new Robert Parker Spenser holiday book,
a new Alice Rice book and many more. Please stop by to check out a new book
by your favorite author or maybe find a new author!
Janet has been working hard to label all our books that have fictional series
character(s). The books now are in numerical order making it so much easier to
read them from the beginning. Please let Janet know how much you appreciate
all her efforts to make it easier for you to start a series with the correct book.
We hope that everyone has an incredible Holiday Season and a safe and Happy
New Year!

lady named, Ellen Guilford. She was interested in having a Bill submitted to the Legislature in honor of Gregg

I was deeply touched and agreed to sponsor an
Emergency Bill. Fortunately, at a recent meeting, the
Bill was accepted by Leadership and will be voted on in committee after the
Legislative Session begins in January, 2014. Details of this Bill will be forthcoming.
We Deliver for less!!
If this bill passes in Committee, it will then go before the full Legislature for a final
vote. I sincerely thank Ellen for bringing this to my attention and I will be busy
finding colleagues to be Co-Sponsors to help fulfill her promise to Gregg: to
make it affordable for all who wish to become donors.

In other important news, I will be arranging a forum to be held in Fryeburg as
soon as possible. The topic will be the Affordable Care Act. This Act is The Law
of the Land. It is very complicated as we all know, therefore, I think it will be
advantageous for everyone to have the experts available to answer questions,
have written information, help you to fill out forms, etc. These experts are
referred to as ‘navigators” and that is exactly what they do - they help you
navigate the website and procedure. It is extremely important that you do not
miss this opportunity to get this valuable assistance, as it takes the confusion
and fear factor out of the process and will help you understand the important
steps you need to take to get the best possible plan in place for you and your
family as well as all the available premium discounts that you are eligibles for.

First, remember that Maine has a “citizen Legislature”,
which means serving in Augusta is not a full-time job. By
Maine statute we are in session for about six months the
first year of the bienium and about four months in the
second year, but I have found that public service is really
365 days a year.
www.mainelegislature.org/legis/statutes/3/title3sec2.html
When the Legislature is not in session I continue working in my other
profession; carpentry. I have been employed by Bartow Construction in Otisfield
for the past thirty four years and this longevity has allowed me to take the
annual leave for absence to serve full-time in Augusta during session. So in any
given year; that’s two full-time jobs, carpentry and public service.
NOW OPEN
Stop by for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Ask about our party platters for your
holiday needs!
The salary for this 126th session of the Legislature is just under $24,000 for the
bienium, roughly $14,000 the first year and $10,000 the second. In addition, there
is a mileage reimbursement for travel to Augusta at the State rate. Legislators also
receive a lodging/ meals reimbursement, up to $32 a day. Many Legislators travel
and stay in the Augusta area due to the length of travel to the Capital, whereas I
have always traveled home each day to sleep in my own bed.
Then there is the Constituent Service Allowance which partially offsets expenses
incurred, for Representatives $1,500 and Senators $2,000. This money I use for
the numerous American and Maine flags that are donated to different groups
and organizations, and for contributions to Scouting and school fund raisers. As
a public figure, you are expected to donate and this helps to offset.
What is also expected is attendance at meetings throughout the district. This is
where the second full-time job comes in. The ability to attend evening meetings
when the Legislature is in session is difficult due to the schedule in Augusta and
travel time. When we are not in session I try to get to as many as my schedule
will allow. Many times I am out in the evening three to four times a week. Does
this stress family time? Yes it does, and this is all part of public service.
In the end, regardless the pay and the hours required, it is public service. A
person is called to the duty and the calling is why I serve.

Fryeburg Family Dental wishes you a wonderful Holiday Season!
Well it is that time of year again with all the wonderful food, cheer, and candy
we can possibly eat. I just love this time of year and all the wonderful tasty
things to eat and indulge in…all of this though, can have a detrimental effect
on our teeth! It’s not so much what we put on our teeth but how long we leave
these wonderful tasting products there to do the damage to our enamel and
gum tissues cascading into a problem of gum disease and tooth decay.
The food that we eat, sweet and sticky food, allows the bacteria in the mouth
to produce acids that will attack the tooth enamel (the outer surface of the
tooth). Sugars react with bacteria to produce acid. The acid from the bacteria
can decay your teeth. It is not just candy and ice cream; it’s all carbohydrate
foods. As the foods are digested and broken down in the mouth, they turn into
simple sugars such as Glucose and Fructose that are called fermentable
carbohydrates. These include the obvious sugary foods such as cookies,
cakes, soft drinks, candy, pretzels, crackers, bananas, chips, and breakfast
cereals. The sugars in these foods combine with the bacteria normally in the
mouth to form acid. These acids cause the mineral crystals inside the teeth to
begin to dissolve. The dental caries lesions (cavities) form when these acids
start to dissolve a tooth’s outer layer of enamel. A cavity forms when the tooth
decay breaks through the enamel to the underlying layers of the tooth.

In this wonderful Holiday Season of such goodies we eat while spending time
with family, we need to remember to brush and floss between meals and
snacks. Every time you eat, the bacteria in your mouth produce acid. The
more times you eat with out brushing the food off your teeth, creates a
breeding ground for decay to happen. With this said, enjoy, have a wonderful
Holiday Season, and remember Fryeburg Family Dental is always here to
make your teeth sparkle again!
