Youth Philanthropy Council 2015-16

Each year in early August, about 45 youth throughout the city. These youth not

2015 ALABAMA POWER ELEVATE
GRANT
YouthServe is one of only fourteen
organizations in the state and one of
four in Birmingham to receive the
Alabama Power Elevate Grant.
The Elevate grant program is a way to
empower nonprofits by providing
funds for community-centered
projects, hosting capacity-building
workshops and providing networking
opportunities within the nonprofit
community.
The Elevate grant packages include a
$10,000 grant in 2015 and a $5,000
challenge grant in 2016 for each grant
winner. Grant winners will also
participate in workshops through
2016 to help them grow and find ways
to expand their positive impact in the
community. Recipients will also
receive a technology assessment from
TechBridge valued at an additional
$5,000
Urban Service Camps 2015
Nearly 80 youth participated in
this summer’s Urban Service
Camps. In addition to workshops
ranging from poverty to privilege,
each group served in the
communities of Norwood and
Woodlawn, working alongside
residents to repair homes and clear
overgrown lots and sidewalks.
They also served with Alethia
House and the Birmingham
Botanical Gardens.
2015 also saw the introduction
of a new advanced camp for
youth returning for the third or
more years. The advanced
camp required youth to focus
deeply on one issue and share their
experience via a radio story,
produced with the help of WBHM
90.3FM.
Diversity of perspective is key at
USC. YouthServe strives to
accommodate every youth
regardless of financial
circumstance. More than 50% of
campers are on some type of

VOLUNTEER PARTNER OF THE YEAR
For the great work provided at both
the spring and fall plant sales as well
as assisting in Gardens events and
helping to rid invasive plant species,
YouthServe was awarded 2015
Birmingham Botanical Gardens
Volunteer Partner of the Year. The
award was accepted by staff at a
special luncheon in December and
presented to youth in January.
