True Retrofit Flexibility: Arzel Damper Line Guide
True Retrofit Flexibility: Arzel Damper Line Guide One feature that sets Arzel Zoning apart from other zoning lines is the flexibility of our damper line. Arzel offers over 30 sizes of stock dampers in different styles and, in most instances, is able to produce custom sizes and shapes in less than 24 hours. For applications with limited or no access to duct work, Arzel offers a line of specialty dampers which install under the floor register, through the register boot or can be inserted through an access in the supply trunk. With so many options, this guide will help you determine which dampers are the best fit for your application. It will also go over some common Arzel damper terms to ensure you are ordering the damper properly. General Damper Information Arzel dampers install directly into existing duct work saving you time and eliminating the headache for the homeowner. All dampers are extremely reliable as they operate using low-pressure air supplied by a mini pump located in the control panel. Dampers are controlled using color-coded PVC or Plenum rated tubing, making future zone changes quick and easy. Due to the flexibility and simplicity of Arzel’s damper installation, you are able to branch or trunk damper based on the application and homeowner’s lifestyle pattern. PVC Tubing: Tubing used when connecting dampers outside of the duct work. Plenum Tubing: Tubing used whenever it must be run inside the duct work. Plenum tubing is UL approved and is smoke and fire rated for this type of use. Trunk Dampering: Refers to when you are using one damper per zone. Trunk damper systems tend to be a little noisier and may require more bypass. Branch Dampering: Most retrofit zoning jobs are of this type, one damper is installed in each branch run and the tubing tee’d together in groups to create individual zones. Branch damper systems tend to be quieter, require less bypass. EzySlide Dampers The patented EzySlide dampers are the cornerstone of the Arzel comfort solution offerings. The unique motorless design uses low pressure air supplied by Arzel control panels. The EzySlide dampers are the most reliable, easy to install dampers on the market today as they insert into existing duct work, making them ideal for retrofit applications. The EzySlide has a ¾” gasket for a tight seal and comes in round or square sizes. The EzySlide can be made easily into custom sizes and shapes. Bottom mount: Used when referring to rectangular-style EzySlide dampers. The mounting plate and actuator are located on the longer dimension, or bottom of the duct. Bottom mounted dampers are recommended whenever possible as it takes less physical torque from the actuator to move the damper blade. Side Mount: Used when referring to rectangular-style EzySlide dampers. The mounting plate and actuator are located on the shorter dimension, or side, of the duct. This style requires more force from the actuator to move the damper blade open and closed. NOTE: Our dampers are non-position sensitive and can be mounted in any position. “Side” or “Bottom” notation simply references the longer or shorter side of the duct you will be mounting the damper through. Specialty Dampers Specialty dampers are typically used when there is no access to duct work and you are unable to trunk or branch damper with the EzySlide damper. These dampers were designed to give contractors alternative options to burying dampers behind drywall or from walking away from a possible job where areas of the duct work are inaccessible. EzyFit Damper With the Arzel Zoning EzyFit damper, contractors can now overcome applications in which there is limited or no access to duct work. The EzyFit installs directly through the register boot, making zoning retrofit jobs simple and easy. The compact folded design allows contractors to slip the damper through the register while magnets set it firmly in place. The gasketed blade shuts off airflow for minimal air flow leaks. The EzyFit ensures quiet operation with the tight seal of the gasket material, eliminating noisy whistling. The damper blade has a ¾” gasket and it sits down in the supply duct away from the register to ensure quiet operation. It works well where you have a 3” or larger register boot opening and metal duct. ( Register boots such as a 2 ¼” are typically too small for the human hand to fit through and properly install the EzyFit ) RegiDamper Much like its name suggests, this damper installs in the register boot directly beneath the floor register. When there is simply no access to the duct run itself, the RegiDamper is the answer. This damper features a low-friction air cylinder and plenum rated air tubing for installation in difficult situations. It can easily be attached to the register boot or the floor register itself. This damper is available in 2 ¼ “ sizes. Inserta Damper Originally designed for counter flow slab systems, this damper can be installed in metal, clay-tile or poly duct systems. It features a spring loaded bellyband that holds it firmly in any type of round duct. The InsertaDamper is a good fit for applications in which the main trunk is accessible but the take-offs run above a drywall ceiling and are inaccessible. InsertaDamper gives you the option to install internally in the duct work without disturbing the drywall ceiling. The InsertaDamper also has a ¾” gasketed blade but does not fit in from the register end of the supply. Running Tubing in Specialty Damper Applications In most applications where specialty dampers are installed, you will have to run plenum-rated tubing inside the duct work to connect the dampers to the panel. While these dampers do take a little extra installation time, the following are techniques other contractors have used to guide the tubing through the duct work. As no two jobs are alike, the techniques listed below are suggestions. For assistance on your specific application, please contact Arzel’s technical support at 800-611-8312. 1. Attach a small plastic bag, like a sandwich bag, to a piece of line or string. Close off all the ducts except the one you are working on. Use either a duct cleaning machine or equivalent device (like a converted blower assembly) to pull the bag through the duct you are working on. Attach the tubing to the string and pull back through to the damper. 2. Attach fishing line to a ping-pong ball or wiffle ball and use a leaf blower to direct the ball through the duct work. Once through the duct, attach to the tubing and push it through. 3. Use electrical fish tape or fiberglass rod to locate the correct run and pull tubing through to the damper. Light Commercial Dampers Designed to maximize strength to meet the higher demand of commercial applications, the EzySlide dampers are built into a stable spiral duct sleeve with a fixed axle and two actuators. This design transfers the greater velocity pressure of a larger system to the duct work itself. The dampers’ oval shaped blade moves on a 45 degree rotation. Light commercial dampers are all custom made and can take up to a week to produce. Warranty All of our dampers are covered by an industry leading limited lifetime parts warranty. Beginning January 1, 2013 Arzel Zoning warranty coverage on all new systems is a lifetime parts only for all dampers and panel components. The lifetime coverage will only be extended for registered Arzel systems. The homeowner is expected to register their Arzel Zoning System online within 90 days of installation. If the system is not registered, coverage will revert to a ONE year parts only policy. System installed prior to this date, all claims are adjudicated by Arzel and follow the same claim process of covering part, labor and handling fee. For more information on the warranty process, please visit www.arzelzoning.com When in doubt call Arzel. If you have any questions regarding the warranty claim process please call Arzel.
