In this presentation, Philip Hyde’s son, David, will show slides and tell stories of travels with his father and mother, Ardis, in the backcountry, hiking, backpacking, boating, or taking a 4x4, horse, burro, airplane, or train. Sid Goodloe has a BS in animal science and an MS in range science from Texas A&M University and is the President of Southern Rockies Agricultural Land Trust. Special Programming **All programming is free and open to public unless noted otherwise.** The Tramp and the Roughrider - An Evening with John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt Lee Stetson & Allan Sutterfield Saturday, September 20 - 7 PM Escalante High School Auditorium In May of 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt planning a tour of the western forests, invited the naturalist John Muir on a four day camping trip in the Yosemite wilderness. The Tramp and the Roughrider illuminates this extraordinary encounter. At the time of this historic meeting, the federal government had established only five national parks (there was no park service) and one small wildlife preserve. Around the campfire, sifting through their histories and their hopes, these very different men discover how they have been shaped by the wilderness they love. By the end of Roosevelt’s presidency, America could boast of an additional 200 million acres of forest wilderness, five more national parks and 65 wildlife preserves. Lee Stetson’s portrayal of John Muir is one of Lee’s more than 50 major career roles from Shakespeare to Simon. His most recent film credits include a featured role as the voice of John Muir in the Ken Burns documentary Our National ParksAmerica’s Best Idea. Alan Sutterfield portraying President Teddy Roosevelt has been an actor and playwright for many years, both in Hawaii and on the mainland United States. Funded by the Bureau of Land Management Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument & US Forest Service - Dixie National Forest The Spirit of John Muir Lee Stetson Tuesday, September 23 - 7 PM Escalante High School Auditorium In a special tribute to the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act, this show is a fun romp through some of the very best of Muir’s grand, thrilling adventures in his beloved western wilderness. The perilous night on Mount Shasta with Muir freezing in the midst of a howling blizzard while simultaneously being boiled and blistered in hot springs; his astonishing ride down a Yosemite Valley canyon wall on a snow avalanche; and climbing the 500’ wall of the winter ice cone beneath the Yosemite Fall are only a few of the amazing - and true - adventures. Lee Stetson’s one-person show, based on the life of the naturalist John Muir has been presented to more than a quarter of a million visitors to Yosemite National Park since 1983. His creation of the John Muir production has taken him to Scotland and Japan as well as throughout the US and Canada to universities, parks and museums. Mr. Stetson lectures frequently on the arts and the environment and spends considerable time promoting the performing arts in the national parks.
