Piecing the Blocks Use a 1/4" seam allowance for all stitching. Press all seams as directed.
1. Sew a 1 5/8" x 10 1/4" black strip to opposite sides of each horse square. Press seams toward the strips.
Stitch the 1 5/8" x 12 1/2" black strips to the top and bottom of the horse squares to complete (12) 12 1/2" x 12 1/2"

Piecing the Sashing Units & Strips 1. Sew a 2 1/2" medium brown strip lengthwise between a 2 1/2" dark brown strip and 2 1/2" light brown strip
to make a strip set. Press seams toward the dark brown edge of the strip set. Repeat to make 4 strip sets. Crosscut the
strip sets into (8) 15 1/2" segments and (12) 3 1/2" segments.

2. Stitch a 2 1/2" medium teal strip lengthwise between a 2 1/2" dark teal strip and 2 1/2" light teal strip to
make a strip set. Press seams toward the dark teal edge of the strip set. Repeat to make 5 strip sets. Crosscut the strip
sets into (4) 15 1/2" segments, (8) 9 1/2" segments and (18) 3 1/2" segments.

3. Join (2) 3 1/2" brown segments on the light ends to make a 3 1/2" x 12 1/2" brown A Sashing Unit. Press
seam to one side. Repeat to make 4 units. Repeat with 3 1/2" teal segments to make 3 teal A Sashing Units.

4. Join (2) 3 1/2" brown segments on the dark ends to make a 3 1/2" x 12 1/2" brown B Sashing Unit. Press
seam to one side. Repeat to make a second unit. Repeat with 3 1/2" teal segments to make 6 teal B Sashing Units.

5. Sew a 15 1/2" teal segment between (2) 15 1/2" brown segments. Press seams to one side. Add a 9 1/2" teal
segment to each end to complete a 6 1/2" x 63 1/2" Sashing Strip. Press seams to one side. Repeat to make 4 Sashing
Strips.

Sashing Strip — Make 4
Completing the Quilt Refer to the Exploded Quilt Diagram throughout the following steps.
1. Arrange and join 4 Framed Blocks with 3 teal B Sashing Units and 2 brown A Sashing Units to make the
12 1/2" x 63 1/2" left block column. Press seams toward the Framed Blocks. Repeat to make the right block column.
2. Arrange and join 4 Framed Blocks with 3 teal A Sashing Units and 2 brown B Sashing Units to make the
12 1/2" x 63 1/2" center block column. Press seams toward the Framed Blocks.
3. Join the block columns with the Sashing Strips to complete the 60 1/2" x 63 1/2" pieced center, paying careful
attention to the positioning of the dark and light color edges of the sashing strips. Press seams toward the sashing
strips.
4. Stitch the 1 1/2" x WOF dark brown strips short ends together to make a long strip. Press seams to one side.
Cut into (2) 63 1/2" strips and (2) 62 1/2" strips. Sew the longer strips to opposite sides of the pieced center and the
shorter strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips.
5. Prepare a template for the hexagon shape.
6. Appliqué: Raw-Edge Fusible or Turned-Edge Fusible:
a. Raw-Edge Appliqué: Trace 20 hexagons on the paper side of the fusible web, leaving approximately 1/4"
between each shape. Cut out, leaving a small margin around each shape. To reduce fusible stiffness, cut out the
center of each shape, leaving a 1/2"–3/4" border of fusible web inside the marked line. Remove unmarked paper
liner, if applicable. Fuse 12 shapes to the wrong side of the medium brown print and 8 shapes to the wrong side of
the medium teal print. Cut out the shapes on the marked lines. Remove paper liner.
b. Turned-Edge Appliqué: Trace 12 hexagons on the medium brown print and 8 hexagons on the medium teal
print, leaving 1/2" between shapes. Cut out, adding 1/8"–1/4" around each shape for seam allowance. Turn seam
allowance to the wrong side. Press or baste to hold.
7. Referring to the cover quilt, center the brown hexagons on the 15 1/2" teal segments of the Sashing Strips
and at the top or bottom edge of the 9 1/2" teal segments. Fuse or pin in place. Center and fuse or pin the teal
hexagons on the 15 1/2" brown segments of the Sashing Strips. Hand- or machine-stitch around each shape using
stitch of choice to complete the quilt top.
8. If using 42" backing fabric, remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long
edges with a 1/2" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim the edges to make a 78" x 81" backing piece. The seam
will be top to bottom on the back of the quilt.
9. Sew the 7 black solid binding strips together at the short edges.
10. Layer the top with the backing and batting pieces. Quilt as desired. Bind using your favorite method and the
black solid binding strips to complete the quilt.
