New Chrysalis Websites Up and Running!
As we mentioned in the Winter 2012/13 edition of From the Wings, we were in the midst of re-designing the Chrysalis website and
creating a brand new site for the Chrysalis Woods and Plastics Limited Partnership. We are extremely happy to inform you that
both sites are now up and running and we invite you to visit both sites and tell us what you think.
Visit the completely revamped www.chrysalis.ca and the brand new www.chrysaliswoodsandplastics.ca today!
Both sites were designed by Paper Leaf and photos were taken by Linda Patterson of Timeless Edge Photography. We hope that
each site will keep you up to date and provide you with accurate, easily accessible information.

2013 Art Shows
Dates set for both locations
Spring is in full bloom, well at least it should
be by now, and that means the Annual
Chrysalis Art Show and Sale is right around
the corner!
This event is definitely a highly anticipated
evening in both Edmonton and Calgary
and has continued to grow and increase in
popularity since the Art Programs began
some five years ago.
In Edmonton, the 5th Annual Art Show and
Sale presented by Scotiabank will be held on
Friday, April 26, 2013 from 6:00-9:00pm at
Chrysalis Edmonton, located at 13325 St.
Albert Trail.
Over 150 pieces of art created by over 30
artists participating in the Art Program will
be on display and up for sale throughout the
night.
In Calgary, the 3rd Annual Art Show and
Sale presented by Scotiabank will take
place on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 from
6:00-9:00pm.
The event in Calgary has become so hotly
attended in the past that it has out grown
the Chrysalis Calgary facility. This year, the
Show and Sale will be held at the Windsor
Park Community Association, located at
5304 6th St. SW.
A number of the artists will also be in
attendance to mingle with guests and discuss
their creative process.
Guests will have the opportunity to browse
the displays, enjoy some light appetizers and
refreshments and take home some of their
favourite pieces at the end of the night.
Both Art Show and Sales are free to attend,
and open to anyone interested in supporting
the talents of the artists participating in the
Chrysalis Art Programs. For more information
on both shows, visit www.chrysalis.ca.
Chrysalis Honoured
Chrysalis: An Alberta Society for
Citizens with Disabilities is the
recipient of the 2013 Alberta Human
Rights Commission Diversity
Leadership Award of Distinction.
This Alberta-based organization,
with over 150 employees, offers
personalized services to help people
with disabilities receive training,
develop life and vocational skills,
find employment, discover volunteer
opportunities and realize a better
quality of life. Chrysalis has been
recognized for its exceptional work
in integrating diversity into their
workplaces so that employees,
clients and others are respected
and included. Chrysalis has shown
leadership in embracing diversity
in their workforce, encouraging
respect and inclusion, and working
toward eliminating discrimination
and barriers to fair employment
practices.
Chrysalis, along with other Alberta
Business Awards of Distinction
recipients, was honoured at a gala
in Edmonton on March 8, 2013. The
Diversity Leadership Award is one
of the Alberta Business Awards of
Distinction.
Chrysalis Teams up with ACE Group
In late 2012, Chrysalis was
approached by the Advertising Club
of Edmonton (ACE) to collaborate
on a project that the student members
of the club could execute.
After initial discussions about what
could be done for the project, it was
determined that the students, who
broke into six groups of two members
and a mentor, would come up with
a marketing plan to increase public
awareness about the Chrysalis Woods
and Plastics Limited Partnership to
ultimately increase new customers
to the business.
An introductory meeting was held
in January so that the participating
students could get a better
understanding about Chrysalis, the
business units and the objectives of
the project.
The students had 6 weeks to put
together their creative ideas on how
to best increase awareness for the
business units. Many questions were
posed and a few even made sure to
tour the facility to see firsthand what
they were working on.
On March 6 the groups presented their
ideas to a judging panel including
two Chrysalis staffers. The ideas
presented were unique, creative and
very innovative! Everything from rebranding the product line, extensive
advertising campaigns, and even
bottling Chrysalis beverages were
presented.
In the end one group came out on
top for their simplistic approach to
introducing people to the units and
rolling out a “good” product line.
Congratulations to Bretton Weir and
Shereen Zink for finishing first!

Chrysalis Appreciation Event
On February 8, 2013, Chrysalis
Edmonton hosted their Annual
Appreciation Event to thank those
who have made contributions to
the organization and our service
individuals.
Part of the Spirit of Chrysalis, the
appreciation event was held in the
Chrysalis facility and welcomed
donors, sponsors, volunteers,
employers, volunteer sites and
Chrysalis staff members to share
in a casual, upbeat evening which
included live entertainment from
local artist, Martin Kerr.
Nearly 125 guests mingled
throughout the Chrysalis contracts
area and art studio, enjoying a
wide array of food and beverages
while getting to know one another
along the way.
Hire-Ability
The highlight of the evening
was a debut performance by a
group of service individuals who
participate in Music Therapy.
This particular group has created
a number of original songs in
the program and performed two,
Starry Night and Playing in the
Snow, for the guests.
We would like to once again
thank everyone who is helping to
contribute to Change, Growth and
Opportunity!
Hire-Ability aims to raise awareness
As we mentioned in the last From
the Wings newsletter, Chrysalis
was tasked with managing a project
funded by the Government of
Canada to help increase awareness
and employment opportunities for
adults with disabilities.
Now that the six month
project is nearing its end, we
are happy to be rolling out the
employer toolkits, videos, public
service announcements, online
advertisements and a dedicated
webpage to help potential
employers learn about the benefits
that hiring an individuals with
a disability can bring to their
company.
The process to get to this point
was very long and daunting but
with help from other services
Will you be the next Game Changer?
Hire-Ability project will focus on
increasing employment opportunities
providers like Chrysalis across
the disability sector, employers
who already hire workers with
disabilities and some input from
individuals who are employed, we
were able to produce what we think
will be very effective tools that can
help influence more employers
to look at hiring individuals with
disabilities who may have been
overlooked before.
Toolkits will be mailed out
to hundreds of businesses in
Edmonton and surrounding area
with the hopes this may become
a province wide strategy at some
point.

videos, PSAs, toolkits and useful
links and contacts are available!
CEO’s Address
The Chrysalis team has been busy this winter as
you will see if you check out the new websites for
the Chrysalis Society and the Chrysalis Woods and
Plastics Limited Partnership. The sites were created
after extensive discussion between the staff and
the Paper Leaf design company and while program
content is fluid, we are very pleased with the end
result. Check the sites out at www.chrysalis.ca and
www.chrysaliswoodsandplastics.ca.
You might also have seen the recently developed
PSAs on Global TV, encouraging employers to
recruit people with disabilities to work in their
businesses. This campaign, Hire-Ability - Be a Game
Changer, was funded by Service Canada and created
and developed by the Chrysalis team along with
Lindisfarne Productions.
The team consulted with other agencies and Employers
who have experienced great success in working with
people with disabilities, and the PSAs and video
highlight a variety of disabilities and businesses in
which they can succeed with minimal accommodation
being provided to them for their disability . Along with
the video and the PSAs is a tool kit for employers to
assist them in the recruitment and retention of people
with disabilities who may be well suited to specific
types of work. The tool kits will be completed and
ready for distribution by mid-April, and will be made
available in a number of different ways to ensure a
broad reach to a variety of businesses.
In 2013, Chrysalis will also be celebrating 45 years
of service in Edmonton which is where programs
were first developed and delivered in 1968 before
expanding to Calgary in 1988. Edmonton and Calgary
have been working together and with the Chrysalis
Society Board to review their vision for 2013 and
beyond, as we seek to provide the most effective and
personalized service to each and every one of the
individuals with whom we work.
2013 is shaping up to be another exciting challenging
year for everyone at Chrysalis and we look forward to
sharing new and emerging directions as they continue
to evolve.
Thanks again to our very committed staff in Edmonton
and Calgary who make good things happen.

2013 Chrysalis Casino a Success
On March 8 and 9, 2013, Chrysalis was tasked with filling volunteer positions to help out at Casino
Edmonton. Each day, 19 positions were filled with people who gave up their free time, or even took
time off work, to help staff the event. A total of 34 different volunteers were on hand working long
hours and some, late into the night! While we will not be informed of how much money will be raised
for Chrysalis, we are expecting a significant amount once we do receive a cheque!
On behalf of the entire organization, thank you to every volunteer who showed up to help out with the
casino dates and we look forward to our next casino dates for Calgary (2014) and Edmonton (2015).
