Fitness classes are led by enthusiastic and talented professional
instructors who are at the top of their fields. Combined with the stunning
Hart House Fitness Centre, our classes offer a unique opportunity to
explore your own path towards a healthy lifestyle.
Aquatics
Learn to Swim I / Learn to Swim II
Learn to Scuba Dive
This class is for those with little or no experience.
Participants will finish the class more comfortable
in the water and with better front crawl (freestyle
stroke) skills. Level II continues with the development
of increased stroke skill and the introduction of the
backstroke and breaststroke.
Want to scuba dive independently at home and
abroad? Hart House Underwater Club has been training
recreational scuba divers for over 50 years! Become
a NAUI scuba diver through 12 weeks of classroom
and pool training in this comprehensive introductory
program that prepares participants for their open
water dives and for a certification level to a depth of
18m/60ft.
Stroke Improvement
Students should be able to swim at least two
continuous lengths of the pool prior to enrolling
in this course and have a working knowledge of
backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. The butterfly
stroke will be introduced. Emphasis will be placed
on building swimming endurance and correcting or
refining all strokes.
Masters Swim
Advanced Scuba Diver
Extend your range and develop your skills as you
explore the shipwrecks of the Great Lakes region.
Offered only in the summer, this course is designed
for certified divers and will extend your depth range to
40m/132feet. (Prerequisite: NAUI Scuba Diver, PADI
Open Water Diver, or equivalent).
Masters Swim allows participants to gain fitness and
improve technique through coaching and structured
training. Perfect for triathlon training and anyone
looking to build technique and endurance. Participants
must be able to swim at least four lengths (100 yards)
uninterrupted.

Scuba Refresher
Every wondered what it is like to breath underwater?
Discover SCUBA now! This one-night course provides
participants with a basic orientation from the safety
of the pool. You and your buddy are paired with an
experienced instructor who will take you on a first dive
tailored to your comfort level.
Planning a trip down south? Been out of the water for
more than six months? Review your scuba knowledge
in the classroom or online and then refresh your scuba
skills in the pool with an experienced instructor. This
two-part course is open to all certified divers.

Increase your safety and enjoyment underwater. Learn
the simple calculations, skills, and techniques needed
to be able to dive safely on compressed air mixes
enriched with up to 40% oxygen. (Prerequisite: NAUI
Scuba Diver, PADI Open Water Diver, or equivalent).
Skin Diving
Love to swim and want to stay under water longer?
Join our six-week skin diver course. Enhance your
physical fitness and enjoy the freedom of experiencing
the underwater world with only a mask, fin and snorkel.
Course offered only in the winter term.

Body Awareness
CYCLE FIT
Archery I / Archery II
Get ready to ride and break away from the ordinary as you
power through a series of cycling exercises and drills designed
to challenge your cardiovascular system and make you sweat!
Go at your own pace while you visualize yourself climbing
hills, racing with the pack and sprinting to the finish.
For beginners and experienced archers alike, the Level
I course offers an introduction to the sport while oneon-one coaching from NCCP-certified coaches ensures
that this class will cater to any skill level. Archery
II is a great opportunity for keen archers wanting to
continue to improve their skills with more in-depth
lessons building on individual strengths. Each class
includes a 20-minute exercise segment designed to
target specific muscle groups while building strength
and stamina.
Mitzvah Technique
Perfect for those who spend much of their day
hunched over a computer, the Mitzvah Technique
emphasizes proper alignment of the head, neck and
spine to improve posture and body awareness. Subtle
adjustments will help balance the head freely on top
of the spine, reducing pressure on the lower back, and
increasing flexibility and range of motion in all joints.

Cycle Flex Pass
Want the flexibility to participate in group cycling at
different times each week? Cycle Flex Pass holders may
use their passes for any class on the Cycle Fit schedule.
Pilates I / Pilates II
The Pilates Method focuses on exercises that properly align
and physically stretch and flex all muscle groups. Correct
posture and efficiency of movement are emphasized with
little or no stress placed on the joints. The Level I course
is designed to promote body awareness, increase muscular
strength and endurance and enhance fluidity. Building on
Pilates I techniques, participants in Pilates II will apply
the foundational work in an energizing body-conditioning
routine. Pilates I or previous Pilates experience is required.

Ballet I / Ballet I/II / Ballet II
Belly Dance Fusion
Ballet I begins as a slow, simple vocabulary introducing
beginners to barre work, basic adage and light allegro
and corner combinations. No formal experience is
required. Ballet I/II and Ballet II are ideal for dancers
with some knowledge and understanding of basic
ballet principles. These classes include a longer, more
intricate barre and centre. A live pianist will be in class
when possible.
Explore uncensored freedom of expression with this
exotic, low impact combination of traditional Middle
Eastern belly dance. Layered with sultry sensual moves,
fused with bits of cabaret, burlesque and modern
exercises. Improve muscle toning for the core, back,
spine, hips, thighs and arms and increase co-ordination
and flexibility.
Ballroom I / Ballroom II
Contemporary dance is a style that emerged in the
20th century as an outgrowth of modern dance.
Unlike traditional dance styles, contemporary dance
is not associated with specific dance techniques,
instead dancers attempt to explore the natural energy
and emotions of their bodies to produce dances
that are often very personal. Contemporary II builds
on the techniques learned in Level I by using more
challenging exercises and more complex choreography.
Get ready for weddings, corporate parties or those
romantic evenings with Ballroom I and your newly
acquired skills in the popular dances of waltz, tango,
foxtrot, jive and cha-cha. Ballroom II builds on skills
learned in Level I with more intricate steps. Partners are
preferred, but not required.
Ballet Barre Bootcamp
A combination of strength, flexibility and cardio, this
class works the whole body from head to toe. Elements
of classical ballet, yoga and deep stretching are used to
sculpt and define muscle tone. Great for all levels and
abilities. No prior knowledge of ballet necessary.
Ballet Repertoire
Learn combinations from great romantic, classical and
neo-classical ballets. A short barre warm up is followed by
a breakdown of choreography from Petipa, Bournonville
and Balanchine. An excellent addition for those with
intermediate level training. Recorded music or live pianist
when possible.
Belly Dance I / Belly Dance II
Belly dancing is based on the isolation of group
muscles and will draw on full-body movement. Based
on Egyptian and tribal styles, this workout builds
abdominal and arm strength. Level II expands on the
skills learned in the previous level and is for those
that have experienced belly dancing and would like to
continue progressing at a more advanced level.

Contemporary I / Contemporary II
Dance for Fitness
This class offers an aerobic workout while you learn
short choreographed dance routines to the rhythms of
the samba, cha cha, jive, mambo, waltz, foxtrot and
more. Come and join this fast-paced beginner class and
get a great workout as you learn the basic steps of latin
and ballroom dance moves. We incorporate some of the
most popular line dances. All styles are designed to be
danced solo, no partners required.

Hip Hop I / Hip Hop II
Classes consist of a warm-up, a cardio movement
section, “across the floor” (combining movements and
rhythms) and finally, a complete routine. No experience
is required.
Hip Hop II builds on the techniques learned in Level
I, using more challenging exercises and more complex
choreography.
Ballroom Waltz
This course is designed for those who have a basic
knowledge of social dance and are ready to take on
more challenging aspects. International style calls for
dances to flow around the floor and introduces dancers
to more advanced technique and style. This follows
the pre-bronze/bronze syllabus for the cha-cha, waltz
and jive, including the more advanced steps. This
introduction course will be taught by Mandy Epprecht,
former Canadian Professional finalist and World
Professional Championship representative.
Jazz
Learn the essential style of the stage. This class
includes a standing warm-up, floor stretches, acrossthe-floor progressions, balance and turns and uniquely
choreographed combinations. Each class concludes
with a cool-down in addition to toning and strength
exercises.

as “hot and steamy” while cha-cha has an upbeat,
infectious rhythm which creates a sense of playfulness
and suggests a flirtation game. Join Mandy Epprecht
and learn the basics of salsa and cha-cha including

Salsa / Salsa II
This is a continuation for students who have previously
completed Salsa – Cha-Cha, Latin Nightclub or who
possess a good understanding of the basic patterns
of salsa, including variations of simple turns and
principles of timing and partnering. Emphasis will be
on the continuing development of partnering skills,
lead and follow, a good understanding of timing
and the ability to execute simple salsa sequences.
Salsa II introduces new steps, and turn patterns will
be introduced and linked together to develop new
combinations. Partners are preferred, but not required.
Street Jazz
Street jazz is the most raw form of jazz, blending
jazz and hip hop together for an intense workout.
This unique style of dance is taken from the
classical elements of jazz, but placed in the modern
environment. This class blends pirouettes with “pop
and lock” moves for a totally modern effect.
Latin Nightclub
Characterized by swivelling hips and a sinuous rib
cage, Latin music creates a sexy, energetic rhythm with
beats and accents meant for those pulse-stopping dips
and turns. Suzette Risto of Twylite Studios will teach
you basics in salsa, merengue and cha-cha. These
dances are enjoyed in most nightclubs, not just in
North America, but all around the world. Partners are
preferred but not required.

MARTIAL ARTS
Capoeira
Capoeira is a vibrant Afro-Brazilian art form developed
in the 17th century by African slaves and their
descendants. It is unlike any other martial art, in
that it is “played” (rather than fought) in a circle,
to the accompaniment of live instruments, singing
and clapping. Capoeira’s dance-like movements are
beautiful to watch, as they are based on achieving
harmony with one’s partner in a safe but challenging
way. Capoeira teaches grace, agility, flexibility, strength
and endurance, as well as promoting a healthy
relationship with others.
Judo – Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Judo is a grappling coed martial art. Throwing and
ground techniques are taught, with striking techniques
excluded. Judo will interest those seeking self-defence
techniques or those wanting a recreational activity to
improve strength, balance, coordination and overall
fitness. Participants are required to hold an orange belt
or higher for the Advanced course.
Naginata
Naginata is derived from an ancient Japanese weapon
art that utilizes a glaive or polearm-type weapon for
both offensive and defensive techniques. The art has
two main components: Kata (or forms) from which
students learn the basic striking points; and blocks,
and footwork and free-form sparring. This dynamic art
emphasizes martial arts etiquette, form and respect
while helping the practitioner to improve balance,
concentration, coordination, strength and spirit.
Shaolin Kung Fu
Shaolin kung fu introduces the ancient Shaolin
Temple art with the aim of enhancing and maintaining
individual fitness levels while developing a high martial
art skill level that will enable one to defend oneself
and build confidence. A multitude of unique forms
and techniques in both competitive and self-defence
situations will be taught. Appropriate for all skill levels
from beginners to fifth-degree black belt.
Kung Fu Blackbelt
This class is for those who desire advanced martial arts
training and skill development. All styles of martial
arts including, Karate, Jeet Kune Do, Tai Chi, Muay
Thai, Wing Chun, Naginata, Arnis, Kali, Judo, Hapkido,
Capoeira, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Mixed Martial Arts,

Jujitsu, Ninjutsu, Kendo, Sumo, Systema, Chinese
Wrestling, Krav Maga, Kickboxing, Savate, Aikido and
the Shaolin Temple Style are welcome.
Shorinji Kan Jiu Jitsu
Shorinji Kan is a form of Jiu Jitsu focused on
self-defence applications. Emphasis is placed on
techniques such as throwing, grappling, joint-locks,
pressure points and striking to control and dispatch
attackers (both armed and unarmed). Students will
gain proficiency in how to fall safely (breakfalling).
Students of any age, gender and fitness level are
welcome, and practice can be adapted to any and all
learning styles. No previous martial arts experience is
necessary.
Tae Kwon Do – Beginner, Intermediate /
Advanced
Tae kwon do, also known as “the way of hand and
foot”, is the national martial art of Korea and gained
full Olympic standing in 1988. This program will
provide the participants with an opportunity to engage
in various sparring techniques, including strategies
and self-defence methods. Individuals with previous
tae kwon do or other martial arts experiences are
encouraged to register. Instruction will be provided by
the U of T Tae Kwon Do Club.
Tae Kwon Do – Competitive Training Group
This class is for members of the University of Toronto
Tae Kwon Do club who wish to train for and participate
in competitive Tae Kwon Do. It allows the athletes to
advance their competitive techniques, speed, power
and the different forms of poomsae.
Tai Chi Chuan
Tai chi was once practiced as a fighting form but has
evolved into a soft, slow, gentle form of exercise that
can be practiced by people of all ages. Tai chi offers a
balanced drill to the muscles and joints by means of
precise actions, which are regulated with the timing
of deep breathing. The benefits of practicing Tai chi
include improved reflexes and coordination, increased
strength and stamina, improved concentration, reduced
stress and increased confidence and discipline.
Available in Novice I (postures 1 to 9) and Novice II
(postures 10 to 25).

Squash I / Squash II
Yoga
Squash I is designed to cover the basics: forehand,
backhand, serve, return, rules and basic strategy.
Squash II is a continuation of Level I, with emphasis
on getting the ball out from the backcourt. Volleys
and fine-tuning the forehand and backhand shots will
be covered.
This class emphasizes the links between body, breath
and mind, with respect for individual differences.
Students will learn to use breath to explore a variety
of poses and movements. Developing a personal
practice helps to cultivate alignment, balance,
flexibility and strength, leading to a sense of calm,
energy and well-being.
Yoga – Ashtanga I / Ashtanga II
“Yoga doesn’t take time,
it gives time.” – Ganga White
Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic style of yoga where one
posture flows into the next to maximize strength,
concentration and flexibility. Ashtanga I presents a
step-by-step introduction to the Primary Series by
focusing on breath awareness and structural alignment.
Ashtanga II builds on the knowledge and experience
gained in Level I. This is a vigorous class with
increased challenge and flow.
Yoga – Hatha I, Hatha I/II, Hatha II
This class emphasizes the connection between breath
and movement. Conscious breathing influences both
physical and mental processes, facilitating deep
relaxation and bringing energy and clarity to body and
mind. The class will include strengthening, stretching
and relaxation.

Individual Strength/Fitness Consultation
Are you a beginner in need of guidance to start your
exercise program? Maybe you work out regularly
but find yourself in an exercise rut? This one-hour
counselling session is designed to help you either
develop or re-evaluate your current fitness program. Our
qualified fitness staff will provide you with information
about frequency, intensity and duration of exercise in
order to attain your fitness goals.
Personal Training
Need motivation to exercise? These one-on-one
sessions with a qualified personal trainer are an
extremely effective way to create or maintain fitness
habits. Your trainer will show you how to use resistance
and cardio equipment correctly and design a tailormade program with your fitness goals in mind. You may
book three, six or ten one-hour sessions with a personal

Bringing the Written Word to Life
Do you ever wish you could bring a prepared speech
to life in front of an audience? From recitation to
inspiration, this workshop uses the principles of
theatre to masterfully translate the written word into a
compelling and engaging presentation.
Voice and Speech – an Introduction
Open up your voice through breath awareness
and physical and vocal explorations that enhance
communication by identifying habits that restrict
freedom and expressiveness. Participants will discover
how to deal with vocal stress patterns and to make
authentic connections to words and to people.
Freedom from Self-Consciousness
This class will investigate the issue of selfconsciousness and how to overcome it. A variety
of tools and useful acting techniques will help
participants overcome tensions that have prevented
them from expressing themselves in the past.
Improv for Play and Stress Relief
Play is the best way to relieve stress while also learning
about yourself and others. Improvisation is driven by this
idea of play and this class explores the improv skills of
“Yes And”, “Listening”, “Point of View” and “Game”.

Movie-making 101
This class will help newcomers navigate the world
of film and video-making. The class will introduce
the field and debunk myths that may be preventing
participants from getting started. Students leave with
a solid sense of how to further their film education and
with simple tips to get started on no-budget projects.
100% Hands-on Film Exercises for
Absolute Beginners
This class is designed for absolute beginners needing
a comprehensive, 100% hands-on experience. Each
week, students will work in small groups to shoot and
cut simple exercises designed to teach the fundamental
building blocks required by all filmmakers. The cameras
used in this class are very simple and each exercise has
a digital editing component using Adobe Premiere.
Advanced 100% Hands-on Film Exercises for
Absolute Beginners
This follow-up to the “100% Hands-on Film
Exercises” class provides students with additional
skill-building exercises. This class is also suitable for
those with some experience who would like to brush
up on their skills.
Practical Movie-making for Educators
Increasingly, students are making movies and
uploading them to platforms such as YouTube, but do
not necessarily understand the essential grammar of
filmmaking. This class is for educators wishing to teach
movie-making exercises in their own classrooms and
features exercises designed to impart the fundamental
knowledge required by their students. For graduate
students, this qualifies for Graduate Professional
Services (GPS) credit.

Video Camera Theory
This introductory class will shed light on the basic
functions of all video cameras with hands-on access
to the Panasonic DVX100. Discover how the aperture,
shutter, lens, and the CCD chip affect proper exposure,
depth of field and motion. Familiarize yourself with
concepts such as white balance and gain, learn basic
set-up for shooting indoors and outdoors, and glean
tips for filming in a variety of situations including handheld and verite.

Video Cameras – HD
This class will serve as a general introduction to HD
video, utilizing the Panasonic Ac130, Panasonic
hmc40, Canon t3i, and the Canon c100, all of which
are available to members of the Hart House Film
Board. Learn to identify the right camera for the job
by experimenting with advanced functions common
to many professional level cameras, as well as the
functions unique to each specific camera. Students will
also review several common post-production workflows
with some common file-types.
Film Lighting 101
This class concentrates on general lighting theory,
different qualities of light and lighting styles, including
high-key and low-key lighting, three-point lighting,
colour temperature, gels and filters. Students will learn
the key characteristics of light, now to decode lighting
scenarios in film and everyday life and how to recreate
similar effects in their own films. Students will have
the opportunity to practice several hands-on lighting
set-ups, applying the general theories covered.
Film Production Sound 101
An introduction to the basic concepts of movie sound.
Topics include: elements of sound, audio formats, single
system versus double system, a brief introduction to
various mics and other basic gear and the challenges
of recording location sound. Students will do some
hands-on recording in the classroom to experiment with
proximity, the mic axis and room acoustics.
Film Post-Production Sound 101
This class covers the basic concepts of post movie
sound, including sound editing, noise reduction, basic
EQ, and creating a stereo mix for film projects. Through
demonstrations using Final Cut and Pro Tools, students
will be taken through the process of dealing with audio
from ingestion of footage to final export. Practical
examples will demonstrate how to ensure sync when
ingesting audio and ways to improve any problem spots
recorded during production.
Digital Video Editing with Adobe Premiere –
An Introduction
Documentary Storytelling with Adobe
Premiere Pro
Explore the basic components of Adobe Premiere video
editing software. Students will learn how to create a
project, capture footage, organize their media, use
the workspace effectively as well as the basic cutting
techniques they’ll need to get started on their own
projects.
This is the ideal curriculum for a hands-on exploration
of intermediate/advanced documentary editing
techniques with Premiere Pro CS6. Students will be
given real world examples to practice techniques of
cutting interviews, B-roll and more. The class will also
look at advanced metadata options, organizing media,
content analysis specifically and storytelling guides
available in Premiere Pro.
Documentary Filmmaking – An Introduction
This class introduces the fundamental concepts,
processes and techniques of documentary filmmaking.
It will cover the major genres and elements, including
ethics, the art of the interview, narration, archival
and stock footage, styles of shooting, funding and
distribution. Screenings and discussion of films will
provide an overview of the historical, conventional,
experimental and emerging forms of the doc.
Documentary Writing
You have a wonderful idea for a documentary and
need to turn it into a winning proposal—but how can
you write a proposal for a film that hasn’t been made?
What elements can you use to effectively sell your
story? Documentary filmmakers often use outlines
and treatments in their project descriptions to give
commissioning editors, foundations, granting agencies
and other funders an idea of the film they intend to
make. This class takes students through the steps to
conceive, research, plan and write an effective outline
and treatment.
Documenting Fieldwork
A hands-on class that is ideal for anyone wanting to
create an audio-visual presentation as part of their
course work or as a personal project. Students will
learn simple tips on how to gather better pictures and
sound, how to conduct effective interviews, and how
to identify additional media (B-roll) with the editing
process in mind. For graduate students, this qualifies
for Graduate Professional Services (GPS) credit.

Writing A Short Screenplay
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of
storytelling for the 21st century screen. Through formal
lectures and fun, innovative exercises, participants will
learn how to build a compelling story using the basic
building blocks of structure, character and dialogue and
then transform it into a standard screenplay format. The
technical constraints of screenwriting will be relaxed and
reconfigured as the class then explores the possibilities
of writing for digital media.
Film Directing 101
Even though we all know that the director is the person
on set who shouts, “Action”, “Cut” and “Print”, there
is still a great deal of mystery surrounding the exact
responsibilities of this very demanding creative role.
In an approach that will combine theory and practice,
this class will introduce students to all aspects of the
director’s craft. Students will be guided through the
director’s responsibilities in pre-production, production,
and post-production. Specific topics will include:
interpreting a script, casting actors, choosing locations,
creating a shot list, staying on schedule, working with a
budget, and shaping the final cut.
Film Editing Concepts and Theories
This class examines the visual language of film editing.
Surveying the evolution and implications of styles,
such as invisible editing versus disjunctive editing, this
workshop further explores the psychology of editing and
how it can be used to affect and even control viewers’
reactions. Through screenings and discussions led by a
professional editor, this class explores how editing can
guide an audience through a story, imposing the desired
thoughts and feelings, whatever the genre: fiction,
documentary, short film, music video or experimental.

Post-Production Planning
Post-production planning is one of the most vital, yet
overlooked, aspects of filmmaking. This class includes
how to name files, where to store media and how to best
organize clips on your timeline, especially with regard

This class introduces industry methods to organize and
simplify the production planning process: conceiving
and organizing a shot list to get the best coverage
of your script, breaking your script down, creating a
production board to organize the shoot efficiently, and
scheduling the beast.

Photographic Essays
This course focuses on the creation of a photographic
essay from a series of photographs. After an
introduction to serial work and key examples/subjects,
students will share their own ideas for a photographic
essay, discuss the project’s aesthetic and technical
challenges, as well as their final approaches. By the
completion of the course, students will present their
own meaningful series for constructive criticism by
their instructor and peers.
NEW Zone System of Photography 1 –
Creative Exposure and Development of Black
& White Films
Explore the creative plasticity of exposure and the
development of black and white negative films under
the guidance of Minor White’s famous Zone System
Manual (1956). Students will shoot and develop one
roll of film, employing the full range of aperture and
shutter speeds, while also learning the effects of a wide
variety of exposure scales upon development. Students
must supply one roll of Black and White film and a
35mm camera with manual exposure. We recommend
bringing your camera to the first class.
NEW
Zone System of Photography 2 – The
Print Developed in Three Developers, Soft,
Medium and Hard
This course is part two of a class centred around
Minor White’s Zone System Manual (1956) but is
open to all. Students who did not enrol in part one
should be prepared to come to class with negatives
of varying densities. We will explore soft, medium,
and hard developers. Specifically, we will examine the
expressive properties using straight Metol and MetolHydroquinone developers, in varying proportions, on
the tonal scale of a normal graded paper, i.e., grade 2.
Composing and Creating Dynamic Images
This introductory class teaches which conditions make
for a good photograph, and introduces strategies for
making meaningful and visually pleasing photographs.
Photography depends on many relationships between
moment, space, light, texture, composition, subject
and concept. The workshop will explore the interests
of the students, different techniques, and successful,
historically significant images.
35mm Black & White Photography –
An Introduction
This introductory class teaches the basic use of a film
camera: understanding film exposure, the relationships
between f-stops, shutter, and film speeds, and the
effects composition, light and depth of field have on
image quality. The instructor will provide photographic
examples and slides.
Black & White Darkroom Techniques 101
This class introduces basic darkroom procedures:
developing black and white negative film and printing
photographs from negatives. Students will learn various
techniques to enlarge and control the quality of prints,
with time to develop their own photographs. Each
week’s lesson consists of a short orientation followed by
supervised time in the darkroom. Basic materials are
included in course fee.
Black & White Darkroom Techniques 201
This advanced class provides an overview of the
photographic printing process as well as advanced
contrast control, and dodging and burning techniques.
Participants will develop the skills to work with a range
of photographic equipment, materials and techniques,
and will further develop their creativity, discipline and
critical faculties.

Colour Night Photography
Explore the strange and wonderful world of colour
night photography. The class begins with an in-class
component and is followed by an evening shooting in the
field. Students will learn the basics of night photography,
focusing on exposure, lighting, colour temperature and
colour cast. Open to all levels of experience.
DSLR Photography – An Introduction
Learn how to use a digital camera in this handson introductory class. The basics will be reviewed:
looking at exposure, aperture, shutter speed, focal
length, image quality and other introductory items.
Intermediate-level features will include white balance,
built-in flash, exposure compensation and more.
DSLR Photography – Intermediate
This intermediate class builds on the fundamentals
learned in the introductory DSLR class and covers
lens selection, dynamic range, sensor size and basic
composition.
Portraiture
Students will pursue their own personal vision while
looking at the styles and techniques of eminent portrait
photographers. In looking at various photographers’
work, the class will consider their relationships with and
approaches to their models/subjects, lighting equipment
and techniques used, and how the images produced
form unique and recognizable bodies of work.
Fine Art Photography
This class explores what makes fine art photography
different from commercial photography, travel
photography and photojournalism. The goal is to help
students develop their fine art photography styles. The
class will quickly move from reviewing examples to
creating and discussing images. The class will begin by
considering the special case of colour photography. How
is colour photography different from black and white
photography? How does an awareness of colour help
photographers to see their subjects differently?
Pinhole Photography
This hands-on course will teach the basic principles of
photography: light refraction, camera optics and basic
darkroom procedure for developing prints. Participants
will build the cameras and then make photographs.
Due to the nature of pinhole photography, the time for
exposures will be long and therefore limited by time and
resources––only one photograph at a time––so students
must choose carefully.

Improv – Introduction to the 5 Skills
This introductory improv class will hone skills in
areas that are key to good improv. Led by academic
and experienced improviser Julian Frid, students will
practice exercises to enrich listening (words, inflection,
body language), leading to better reactions and a
stronger appreciation of different values and points of
view. After these exercises, students will participate in
scene work and enjoy each others’ creativity.
Improv Level 2 – Long Form Games and
Structure
This Level 2 improv class will explore scene work and
strengthen existing improv skills. A review of some of
the tools of improv will then lead to scene work: how

to sustain a scene through game and character, editing
techniques between scenes, techniques to narrate and
host, and how to best recognize and transfer a game
from scene to scene.
The Organics of Acting for the Camera –
An Introduction
This class will include a variety of acting exercises and
improvisation work to help guide students in staying
present and connected, working from the heart with
truth and vulnerability and staying in the moment. The
process explored will focus on breath, sub-textual and
visual stimulation, character psychology, focus and the
energy exchange and dynamics of working with other
actors. The issue of actor image and casting will also
be addressed. This class is designed for actors new to
working in front of the camera.
Art of Acting – Finding Personal Liberation
and Authenticity
This class is designed as an introduction for those new
to the arts, and will present techniques of improvisation
and other acting exercises to allow students to focus
on remaining truthful and honest within the work while
using an organic approach that is from the heart.

Hart House has the authority to revoke or suspend membership rights and privileges when offending behaviour is exhibited by a member. Offending behaviour includes, but is not limited to: disorderly conduct, disruptive behaviour, persistent disregard of Hart House rules and regulations, default in payment of membership fees. STUDENT TOWEL AND LOCKER RENTAL SERVICE Student locker rentals and towel service are sold separately for a non-­‐refundable fee. CLASS REGISTRATION Registration can be done in person at the Centre for Information, Registration and Member Services, the Hub, on the main floor or at www.harthouse.ca . All withdrawals and transfers for classes must be completed in person at the Hub. Withdrawals must be completed at least two business days prior to the start date for creative classes and prior to the second fitness class. PERSONAL TRAINING Do you need motivation to exercise, or do you want to add value to a workout? These one-­‐on-­‐one sessions with a qualified personal trainer are an extremely successful way to create or maintain fitness habits. Your trainer will show you how to use the resistance and cardio equipment correctly and design a tailor-­‐made program with your fitness goals in mind. You may book 3, 6 or 10 one-­‐hour sessions with a Personal Trainer. MEMBERSHIP AND REGISTRATION INFORMATION University of Toronto students are automatically members of Hart House through incidental fee payments. Membership options are available for staff, faculty, and the public. Fitness classes are available exclusively to members, while creative classes are open to both members and non-­‐members with members receiving a preferred registration rate. Membership is required for use of the Fitness Centre,
