TINY TOTS GAZETTE COMPLETE COVERAGE Volume 29, Issue 3 Summer, 2010 Successful Breastfeeding Babies who are breastfed are generally healthier and achieve optimal growth and development compared to those who are fed formula. Infants who are not breastfed are at an increased risk of illness that can compromise their growth. Breastfed babies receive protection from illnesses through their mother's milk. Breastfeeding is the natural and recommended way of feeding all infants, even when artificial feeding is affordable, clean water is available, and hygienic conditions for preparing and feeding infant formula exist. Almost every mother can breastfeed successfully. All mothers, particularly those who might lack the confidence to breastfeed, need the encouragement and practical support of the baby's father and their families, friends and relatives. Health workers, community workers, women's organizations and employers can also provide support. Everyone has the right to information about the benefits of breastfeeding and the risks of artificial feeding. Communities as well as media and other channels of communication can play a key role in promoting breastfeeding. Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding The theme of World Breastfeeding Week, 2010 is focused on ensuring that birthing facilities have protocols and trained staff to support immediate initiation of breastfeeding postpartum. When researching birthing facility options, use the following guidelines to confirm the maternity services and care for your newborn infant: 1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff. 2. Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy. 3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding. 4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth. 5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants. 6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk unless medically indicated. 7. Practice rooming-in, allow mothers and infants to be together, 24 hours a day. 8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand. A Publication of Tiny Tots Diaper Service and Baby Boutique 9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants. 10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and referring mothers to them on discharge from the hospital. For more information on the baby friendly hospital initiative, check http://tensteps.org/ How you can help? Here are some simple ways to support Breastfeeding in your community. Your contributions are not only free, they can be made from the comfort of your home. • Nominate your employer for the Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace Award for making your choice to breastfeed an easy choice The deadline for submitting nominations is August 15. The nomination form can be downloaded at http://tinytots.com/nominations/. • Donate your surplus milk to help a sick or fragile infant. The Mothers’ Milk Bank in San Jose has issued a special request for donations of breastmilk for the summer of 2010, as they are still in need of donor milk. Their website, www.sanjosemilkbank.com, describes the criteria for donors. The screening process starts with a simple phone call to 408-998-4550 or toll free 1-877-375-6645. By the way, if you do not live near the center, the Mothers’ Milk Bank can send you a free cooler in which you can mail them your frozen milk at their expense! • Participate in a simple survey conducted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. One of CSPI’s missions is to better understand how infant formula companies promote their products to parents. Your participation will help new mothers to not get caught off-guard by the cleverness of infant formula advertising and promotion. Take the online survey at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/infantformulamarketing Nutritional Research May, 2010 Researchers discover that breast milk and formula activate a different set of genes in the intestines of infants. “For the first time, we can see that breast milk induces genetic pathways that are quite different from those in formula-fed infants,” said University of Illinois nutrition professor and author Sharon Donovan. "Early intestinal development in infants helps to protect against bacteria and viruses. Although formula makers have tried to develop a product that’s as much like breast milk as possible, hundreds of genes were expressed differently in the breast-fed and formula-fed groups." I spray my son directly on the behind and use a reusable wash cloth instead of making paper wipes. Patty, Santa Clara Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Graduates Congratulations to our own Holly McCarty and Shannon Lord upon the successful completion of their Certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) training. They graduated with full honors and have already participated in one of our carseat inspection events. Also noteworthy, Benjamin Arias, the CPS technician from SafeKids who is at Tiny Tots for our inspection events, has successfully completed the coursework to officially be a certified CPS instructor. Congratulations Ben! Tiny Tots has four CPS technicians on staff to assist in determining carseat options and more importantly what best practices are for the safety of your child. Emi, getting her newborn diaper changed. Maternity Xchange Tiny Tots is an official drop-off station for Maternity Xchange, an innovative mobile maternity store. They collect new and gently used maternity clothing around the Bay Area and sell it again at great prices. Have old maternity clothing? Give them to Maternity Xchange and they will send you a check for any sold clothes. If your clothes are not sold, you can choose to either donate them or have them returned to you. More details can be found at www.maternityxchange.com. You can “drop off” clothes by either bringing them in to our boutique or by putting a separate bag marked “Boutique/Maternity Xchange” out with your soiled diapers. Tiny Tots will send them to Maternity Xchange. Make sure you have filled out the appropriate paperwork, which can be found on Maternity Xchange’s website. Congratulations to our own Amanda who gave birth (at home) to Hope Elizabeth on June 13. Hope came just in time to be a part of her daddy’s graduation from seminary. The new family is doing great. The American Academy of Pediatrics now recommends the use of physcial sunscreen on babies, even under 6 months of age (however, it’s best to keep them out of the sun). Physical sunscreen’s natural active ingredients are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide (natural minerals). Physical sunscreens form a monolayer that sits on the surface of the skin and deflects the sun’s rays. There is far less risk of irritation/allergic reaction due to non-absorption. It provides broad spectrum protection from UVA and UVB rays along with immediate active protection upon application. http://www.aap.org/advocacy/releases/marspringbreaktips.cfm 4 Outdoor Blankets by Tuffo Lightweight and compact for easy traveling. Brands include Anita, Bravado, Glamourmom, Hot Milk and Medela. We’ve picked the best styles from each manufacturer and have a wide range of sizes. Our trained bra-fitters can help you decide which options best meet your needs. Nursing Covers Bebe Au Lait nursing covers were conceived from the need for privacy and style. Bebe Au Lait is a local company (Los Gatos) and are the inventors of the rigid neckline allowing the nursing mother to easily peek down at baby. There are numerous fabric options and Tiny Tots carries them all. Babywearing Tiny Tots is passionate about baby wearing. We feel confident that if babies could talk, they’d tell us their favorite place to hang out is right with mom (also with easy access for breastfeeding). Different options for babywearing are available at Tiny Tots. Come in and try our demos, attend a class, or check out more at our on-line boutique. Key Points for Safe Babywearing Include: • Keep chin off chest – place two fingers between chin and chest • Baby’s face should be in view at all times with no need to move sling/carrier • Baby should be high on the wearer’s body – “close enough to kiss” top of head • Baby’s face should never be turned in against wearer’s body or into fabric of sling • Semi-reclined or upright position preferable to horizontal one Moby Wraps A long piece of cloth used as a baby carrier by means of wrapping the entire cloth around the caregiver’s and baby’s body and tying or otherwise securing the ends, without the use of separate ties or fasteners such as buckles or rings. Moby Wraps are available at Tiny Tots in 24 colors. Maya Ring Slings A piece of cloth with two rings sewn to one end, used as a baby carrier by threading the “free” end through the rings and wearing the sling looped around the wearer, generally from shoulder to hip. Maya Ring Slings are lightly padded and are available at Tiny Tots in 8 colors. Structured & Unstructured Carriers These carriers retain their shape or structure even when not being worn, due to incorporating padding. Structured carriers fasten with buckles, unstructured carriers fasten by tying. Tiny Tots carries Ergo, Cybex Go (front and back carry) and Scootababy (hip carry) structured carriers. Baby Hawk, unstructured MaiTei carriers are also available. Breastpumps The most common reasons for needing a breastpump include being separated from baby during feedings (returning to work or school) or an inability for the baby to directly breastfeed effectively (prematurity). If you determine you need a pump, Tiny Tots has hospital grade breastpumps to rent or purchase by Hygeia, Medela and Ameda along with spare parts and nursing accessories.
