AOCRA welcomes you to the 2012 OC6 National Marathon Titles Firstly I would like to congratulate Mooloolaba for once again taking on the daunting task of running a National Titles event. Mooloolaba has proven in the past that it is more than capable of staging such an event and I’m sure this year’s Titles will live up to the same high standard that we have all come to enjoy. Secondly, AOCRA would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Allan and Jenny Rasmussen and the Sunshine Coast Junior Paddling Development volunteers for all the tireless work that they continue to dedicate to junior development. Allan and Jenny’s foresight has laid down the foundations - bricks and mortar - for a solid National Junior structure. With this in mind AOCRA has recently set up the following pathways: 1. Support and networking for the V1 canoeing discipline. 2. The introduction of the interest free loan program for the purchase of V1s for clubs with Juniors. Currently 40 orders received. 3. Specialised V1 coaching clinics run by Matahi Brightwell, a renowned NZ coach, to be held in Sydney, Tasmania, Mackay and Mooloolaba. 4. V1 canoeing added to our Nationals race format at Coffs Harbour in December last year. The 16U and 19U boy and girl winners of this event were sponsored to compete in New Zealand and came home with a silver and bronze and two fifth place finishes, a very commendable outcome considering their recent entry into this form of racing. 5. Our first purely V1 race (Aussie Aito) to be held at Mooloolaba on May 11 with the 16U and 19U boy and girl winners sponsored to compete in Tahiti. 6. The continuation of the TTGGWA (Trans Tasman Gubbi Gubbi Waka Ama), a three day sprint event held each September on the Sunshine Coast. This year we anticipate approx 700 juniors to compete from NZ, Aitutaki, Rarotonga, Tahiti and Hawaii. The growth of this event has piggybacked on the Gubbi Gubbi that was originally formatted by the Rasmussens six years ago and owes its current success to their visionary ideals. 7. Junior travel assistance programs to assist Juniors to compete in the above events. 8. The introduction of outrigger canoe racing in the Commonwealth Games Festival of Sports to be held on the Gold Coast in 2018. We are currently working on a joint proposal with Australian Canoeing and Surf Life Saving Australia to have our respective sports included in the Festival of Games. We have approval in principle from the Commonwealth Games committee heads. If we are successful in having our sports in the Commonwealth Festival/Cultural Games, and I believe this to be the case, than this will be the biggest springboard our sport has ever seen. Not only will it give our Juniors a fantastic goal but also our Open paddlers, as there will be approx 12 Commonwealth countries competing in outrigger paddling alone. We will have sprints for V1, V6 and V12 and a downhill race for V1, OC1 and V6, combined with AC and SLSA events. Fantastic sponsorship opportunities are ahead for all involved. Stay tuned to the AOCRA Emus Letters. See you on the water. Mark Forbes President & National Junior Development Coordinator AOCRA v2 - 2012 National Marathon Titles – p.2 Welcome from Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club Mooloolaba OCC is proud to host the OC6 National Marathon Titles for the fourth year running and invites paddlers from across Australia to Queensland's beautiful Sunshine Coast. 2012 will be a big year for many paddlers and I would like to wish all our Aussie representatives competing in Calgary, and to other Aussie paddlers racing in Hawaii and elsewhere around the world this year, good luck and keep up the great Australian tradition of consistent excellent results. (A special mention to the Mooloolaba Men competing in their 19th consecutive Molokai Hoe!) With a relatively new AOCRA administration, the future of outrigger canoe racing in Australia has been set some very challenging tasks over the next few years. It is a priority to structure our sport in such a way that Junior and Youth development is regarded as a necessary function of every AOCRA-affiliated club. Due to the great work and vision of Allan and Jenny Rasmussen who, with relatively little support in the early years, put Junior Development in Queensland on the outrigger map, we are now at a point where the momentum has been grasped by AOCRA, ready to be taken to the next level. I would like to congratulate Allan and Jenny, and their coaching staff and parents, on their effort in putting together a strong Junior contingent to represent Australia at the World Sprints in Calgary in August this year. The team is representative of clubs across Queensland and Tasmania, including: Cairns, Canoe Point, Burrum, Mooloolaba, Outrigger Australia, Brisbane and Cradle Coast. It is a huge logistical task to organise a total of 23 Junior paddlers from different clubs, let alone to get them across the world. The Juniors will be running a fundraising BBQ at the 2012 Nationals and any financial support over the weekend would be much appreciated To paddlers, their families and friends who have made the journey from all parts of Australia, we wish you a pleasant stay and safe racing. Thank you for coming back, year on year. A big thank you to Matt Dillon, general manager of the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club, for his support once again. And a huge pat on the back to the MOCC committee, members and volunteers for their hard work ensuring that these Nationals will be an excellent experience for all. Skin off it! Flights into Brisbane can transfer to the Sunshine Coast using the quick and convenient services of SunAir (www.sunair.com.au) or Col's Airport Shuttle (www.airshuttle.com.au). If driving to the Sunny Coast from north or south, just follow the Bruce Highway. v2 - 2012 National Marathon Titles – p.4 Location Access to both the areas for trailer parking (river side) and the regatta site (beach side) is via Parkyn Parade in Mooloolaba. If you are travelling on the Bruce Highway from either the north or south, follow the signs for the Sunshine Motorway. Once on the Motorway, follow the signs for Mooloolaba. Turn or continue left into Brisbane Rd. Continue along Brisbane Road until you get to Foote Street (there will be a Shell service station on your right and McDonalds on your left). At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto Foote Street and then turn left at River Esplanade. At the lights, turn right into Parkyn Parade. v2 - 2012 National Marathon Titles – p.5 Trailer Parking Trailer parking will be in the boat trailer car park (next to the Coast Guard building) on Parkyn Parade only. This is the next large car park on your right after the Underwater World / Wharf Precinct car park. Please park considerately and obey all Council signs. If it’s particularly good boating weather (i.e. flat), this car park can fill up quickly with recreational boaties. We are working with QLD Transport to cordon off an area specifically for OC6 trailers. PLEASE NOTE – TRAILERS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO USE STREET PARKING OR OTHER CAR PARKS ON PARKYN PARADE. PLEASE USE THE BOAT TRAILER CAR PARK ONLY UNLESS OTHERWISE DIRECTED. Car Parking Hopefully, the majority of paddlers will be staying locally and can walk up Parkyn Parade (or the beach) to the regatta site. If you do need to drive, please car pool where possible. Street parking for cars is available on Parkyn Parade. PLEASE NOTE – THERE IS TO BE NO CAR PARKING BY PADDLERS OR SUPPORTERS IN THE CUL-DE-SAC CAR PARKS AT THE SPIT END OF PARKYN PARADE. THIS AREA IS RESERVED FOR CUSTOMERS OF THE RETAIL OUTLETS IN THE AREA. IF YOU PARK IN THESE SPACES, YOU WILL BE ASKED TO MOVE YOUR VEHICLE. Please obey all Council and street signs. No parking of vehicles of any kind is permitted on grassed areas or outside designated spaces. Council will be out in force, so please don’t risk the fine! v2 - 2012 National Marathon Titles – p.6 Canoe Rigging Rigging will take place in the boat trailer car park on Parkyn Parade with tyres available to rest canoes on. Please do not rig your canoes before Saturday morning as there is not sufficient space to store fully rigged canoes in this car park. Once your canoe has been rigged on Saturday morning, your crew can launch down the ramp into the Mooloolah River and paddle out the river mouth to the regatta site (takes approx 15-20 mins with a full crew). Since Nationals 2011, the Mooloolah River entrance has been defined as a coastal bar and conditions have changed dramatically. Please take care when exiting the river mouth as sets will break, even when relatively calm. All the usual safety equipment (covers, bailers, PFDs, tow rope, spare paddle) will be required. Once your day of racing is complete, and if you do not require your canoe on Sunday, please paddle back around to the trailer car park and de-rig. If you do need to keep your canoe rigged for Sunday, we have been given approval to stack canoes on the beach overnight. MOCC members will be on hand to show you where you can leave your craft, as they cannot simply be pulled up the beach and left. Canoes will need to be stacked in a particular area, so bear this in mind if you have Juniors racing on Sunday morning. PLEASE NOTE - All tents and other belongings are left at your own risk. There will be overnight security, but as this is an open area, it is accessible to the public. Previously there have been a few tents that were packed up and left under trees overnight yet went missing. It may be better to leave your shelters up to prevent others walking off with them either in error or on purpose. Ensure that all your tent bags and, if possible, the tents themselves, have your club name / logo on them for easy identification. PLEASE NOTE – COUNCIL HAS REQUESTED THAT NO TENT PEGS BE USED DUE TO UNDERGROUND CABLING IN THE AREA. Please use weighted material instead (sand bags, etc). Saturday Night Presentations & Party The Saturday night party will be an all ages, family event at the Mooloolaba Marina (33-45 Parkyn Parade, Mooloolaba). The presentation, buffet dinner, party and band will be FREE for all Senior & Junior Paddlers wearing the 2012 National Marathon Titles registration wrist band. Additional tickets will be available for non-paddlers ($20 per adult & $10 per child under 18 years) at the registration area and at the door. Senior paddlers competing in three races at the 2012 National Titles will receive an extra ticket to the Saturday night function. To claim your ticket, you must verify at the registration area that you have paddled, or will be paddling, in three events. Alcohol and soft drinks will be available for purchase at the venue. What better way to cap off a great day of racing then to have a BBQ, a few drinks and a dance with teammates, friends and family? The Senior Mixed race is a late start on Sunday for those wishing to dance the night away. After the Nationals party has finished, The Yacht Club invites everyone to continue the celebrations next door at their place until close. Please note that The Yacht Club is now a licensed club, so you must be a club member ($5 to join) or a member of a reciprocal club. If you live more than 15km away, you can sign in as a visitor. Similar rules apply for surf clubs in the area. Be sure to bring your driver’s license or equivalent ID! v2 - 2012 National Marathon Titles – p.11 Sunday Presentations The Marina will also host the Sunday afternoon presentations for Juniors and the Senior Mixed race.
