BDC New Releases
Welcome!! Welcome!!
Let’s face it, one of the creepiest scenes in major films of the last couple of decades is the
dancing second skin scene from The Silence Of The Lambs – freaky-deaky scary-ass stuff – ah, but
the music...the song is Goodbye Horses; the artist is Q Lazzarus and it dates from 1988. Now a
proper 12 inch vinyl reissue of this long unavailable song is out accompanied by an electro cover
by Hayden Thorpe and Jon Hopkins.
July 2013
Alice Gerard, folk and bluegrass icon, has her first new album in a decade. Fans of her years as a
duo with Hazel Dickens will be very pleased.
Rock and Roll never dies!!! But (some) rock and rollers grow up, get married and have families.
Some of those make cool records for their (and others‚) kids. The Verve Pipe known for their
monster hit,The Freshmen, are back with their second kid oriented release; Are We There Yet?
Coolerama Mama!!!
Frank Black’s Oddballs is finally available to all. This was a limited edition sold at Catholics shows
in 2000 until now. B-sides, covers and live material from the mid-90s. And we have a teaser CD
single from Violet Clark with help from Black Francis himself as a prelude to her Fall full length.
We are also pleased to have new albums by Alela Diane, whose first album went Gold (in France),
from White Dove formerly known as Monster, and a cool compilation of Texas roots music from the
Songwriters Across Texas television series.....and so much more!!
New albums from old friends Colin Gilmore and his West Texas songbook, and Patrick Sweany’s
wonderful mélange of styles introspection, Close To The Floor.
Your friends at bdc.

Colin Gilmore, The Wild and Hollow
Colin Gilmore grew up in Lubbock, Texas, spending many nights as a child in nightclubs like Stubbs, where he
saw songwriters like Joe Ely, Terry Allen and his own father, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, bring the stage to life. His new
album, The Wild and Hollow, is clear illustration of the lessons he learned from those masters. Recorded in Austin
and Chicago and featuring guest appearances from Amanda Shires, Sally Allen and more; The Wild and Hollow
shows how Gilmore continues to push his own musical boundaries while remaining true to the high standards set
by his musical heroes. Blending the influences of his own musical upbringing; from country to folk to pop to punk,
West Texas Rock ’n’ Roll is indeed in capable hands.

ELECTRONIC
teams, OneWorld
OneWorld
marks teams’ second full-length album, and, as Sean Bowie is consummately aware of the importance of titles and design during the re-imaging process, the title is very appropriate. This record is circular: like
the globe, like a vinyl record and like our thoughts. There is an intro and outro that uses the same electronic rabbit
hole effect. You are sucked down into a space where we now all exist: an electronic plane that is separate from develis a
opment but aware of aviation. As the lead single, Alchemy, states: “it’s about control.” OneWorld
controlled barrage: slow meets fast, and rhythm and blues gets dropped into the year 2030. Full of found sounds
and properly placed fog, lasers, drums and fuel: it exists as a seamless entity.

Alela Diane, About Farewell
Alela Diane’s 4th album, About Farewell, serves as an eloquent goodbye to lovers from years past, coupled with
poignant last walks down memory lane. While the lyrics deal most with Alela’s recent divorce, the album explores
her entire last decade of relationships with tremendous honesty and nuanced insight. The entirety of About Farewell
was built around Alela’s voice and simple guitar arrangements. A once-heartsick Alela has said her farewells, and
now is the time to meet the new, more fully actualized woman. The LP component is on 180 gram vinyl and has a
digital download card. Alela’s first release went Gold in France; her most recent, on Rough Trade, garnered a
rating of 9 of 10 from SPIN; Alela has been featured on NPR and toured with Fleet Foxes and Blitzen Trapper.
This CD and LP has a street date of July 30, 2013.

Alice Gerrard’s first solo album in 10 years, and a step in a new direction for her: all the songs are originals. With
songs inspired by her years of friendship with key American roots musicians like Tommy Jarrell and Elizabeth Cotten,
and songs from her life well-lived in rural North Carolina, Alice Gerrard’s new album touches on many of the
American musical traditions that have inspired her throughout her career. First with the seminal duo Alice Gerrard
& Hazel Dickens, and then through many other inspirational collaborations, Alice Gerrard has been at the
forefront of American roots music for over 40 years and an inspirational figure to generations of musicians.

Jay Thomas, John Hansen, Chuck Kistler, Adam Kessler, The Cats: Neo-Boogaloo
Jay Thomas, John Hansen, Chuck Kistle and Adam Kessler are The Cats. This crew of all-star jazzers creates a
four way collective for further explorations of boogaloo and cantaloupe grooving; but most fans probably won’t
get that at first; they’ll just feel the nice snappish jazzy groove on classic compositions by Herbie Hancock,
Horace Silver, Hank Mobley and more. Jay Thomas, a native of Seattle, is a versatile multi-instrumentalist
(trumpet, flugelhorn, alto, tenor, soprano and flutes). His music could be described as lyrical without losing touch
with the blues. He has played on countless scores, innumerable gigs, tantamount tours of Japan and beyond.
He goes back to days of Slim Gaillard, Herb Ellis, and beyond.
The Cats “lived up to the CD’s subtitle, Neo-Boogaloo. Their tune list is replete with ’50s and ’60s pieces... the high points of passion came with the
leader on tenor saxophone. - Doug Ramsay, Rifftides

even the more reflective tempos leave you feeling good. A Seattle area jazz vocalist whose musical career is
beginning to bloom! Diana has a clear voice, with elegant jazz phrasing and a gentle forward momentum.
Her directness is pleasing and interesting. Somewhere between the styling of Blossom Dearie and Anita O’Day,
with the appeal of Diana Krall.

Frank Black, Oddballs
Oddballs is a collection of rare gems recorded between 1994 and 1997. Though technically a re-release,
Oddballs is a special treat for fans and historians of Black’s epic career. In its initial release in 2000, it was only
sold to the lucky folks who went to Frank Black and the Catholics shows. Long out of print, Oddballs was made
during Frank Black’s transition from solo studio magician to a purist who recorded everything totally live to 2-track
(the method which would eventually be perfected by Frank Black and the Catholics). Many of Oddballs’ treasures
are b-sides either from Black’s 1994 acclaimed studio masterpiece Teenager of the Year or from the almost-live,
totally raw and powerful Cult of Ray from 1995. Though these oddities are obscure, they are in no way throwaways.
Rather, Oddballs gives us a deeper glimpse into Black’s unique vision of rock n’ roll.

Sanders Bohlke, Ghost Boy
Based in Birmingham, Alabama, Sanders Bohlke began where much of America’s great music began - the South.
Just as The Blues became Rock and Roll, Bohlke found his voice and fingers in the Mississippi Delta. He honed
his craft further in Oxford, where he attended the University of Mississippi and recorded his self-titled debut. This
collection, produced by Jeffrey Cain (Remy Zero), was recorded as a complete work - meant to be heard from start
to finish. On their own, each track is a standout, every song an expansion of Bohlke’s unique style - sparse and
ethereal, layered and complex, with lush soundscapes against a soulful voice. On Ghost Boy, Sanders perfects a
soundworld that deftly highlights both the beauty and the dark romance of his songs.

Violet Clark, Pure O
The new single from Violet Clark is a playful venture into unconventional yet catchy danceable pop territory. The
song is told through the lens of an obsessive compulsive mind. The off-kilter lead synthesizer that kicks off the
song and comes and goes throughout signifies a brain on the verge of being “ripped apart”. But Violet holds it
all together with cool finesse and stylish pop melodies. Aided by the spot-on drums of Noam Schatz and the
distinctive acoustic guitar of Pixies’ head honcho Black Francis, Violet Clark conjures quirkiness with a payoff,
complete with a chorus that you’ll have a hard time getting out of your head. Pure O also features the B-side,
She’s My Girl, a commanding and sizzling cover of indie darling Ariel Pink’s modern lo-fi classic.

Originally released in 1987, Out Of The Way was the third studio release from Portland’s Crazy 8s. Out Of The
Way began as re-recordings and remixes from a Warner Brothers demo session that eventually blossomed into a full
blown indie release originally on the Red Rum Records label and featured the college radio hits, Courage and
Conviction and Main Things as well as, the Top 40 hit Luv’ll Find You and the AOR track, One World Vision.
Out Of The Way broadened the appeal far beyond college radio darlings for Crazy 8s. With this digital release
remastered by Drew Canulette, Out Of The Way finally receives its’ first release on compact disc.

Little Atlas, Automatic Day
Little Atlas returns with Automatic Day; easily the band’s most mature and significant work to date. All of the
signature elements of the Little Atlas sound are firmly in place, with a darker, more cinematic foundation, stronger
production, and a more aggressive approach that takes them into uncharted new territory. From ethereal
soundscapes to unexpected angular twists, from pastoral calm to caustic bursts of heavy dissonance, this is
a new and evolved Little Atlas that is both unclassifiable and undeniable. 3xTime Grammy Award-winner
Joe Palmaccio mastered the final mixes of Automatic Day.

tragic events in his life the past two years, it’s a raw, often gritty look at loss, mortality, and life on the road all
built around Sweany’s deep, soulful baritone. Close To The Floor was engineered and produced by Joe McMahan

Tango Alpha Tango, Black Cloud
Nathan and Aaron Trueb grew up on a farm learning all about the blues and country music from a father and
grandfather that both sang and preached the gospel. They both moved to the city to get closer to the music and
Nathan’s wife, Mirabai, joined the band as well. They went back to the city they grew up in and recorded this album
full of blues, country, and a little bit of the city- mostly live, and on analog tape - and it sounds like it, in all the
right ways. They call themselves Tango Alpha Tango, code for, “Thick As Thieves”, which is exactly what they are.

On their album, The Hoss, The Candle; White Dove’s delicate and haunting songs find a more celestial, hazy sound.
Harkening back to the sounds of California in the 70s, the band confidently layers ethereal background
harmonies with cosmic slide guitar. However, White Dove never stay in the sun for long. Night has fallen in the
Canyon, with songwriter Alex Johnstone taking a classic LA sound somewhere dark and shadowy. After shedding
their former name Monster, a monicker Alex Johnstone has carried since forming the band in 2002, White Dove now
includes multi-instrumentalist Jack Long and bassist Carl Harders. In the past, White Dove drew comparisons to
Mojave 3, Big Star, Galaxie 500, and Mazzy Star.
