When MARY POWELL CHISAM was three month1. old, she, her
brother Norman and their mother crossed the Atlantic on a
Cunard ship lo join her fath er, Captain James Chil>am, in
Liverpool. He commanded a Black Ball Line5' !>hi p charte red Lo
take emigrant!> to Tasmania. Mary was christened at sea on the
outward leg of the voyage. The ship returned 10 England via
Callao, Peru and I he Chincha Islands where the ship loaded
guano. While her fat her continued to comm and British nagships,
the family lived in llfracomhc, Devon and Liverpool where Mary
au ended a private 1-.chool. As a teenager her brother was placed
in a boarding school while Mary and her parent!-. sailed with a
load of coal for Shanghai, China and subsequently spent four
years trading along the Chinese coast. Following her mother's

death some years later in England, she was a guest o f fa mily
frie nds on a voyage to San Francisco whe re !>he met and married
James who was serving aboard a ship in po rt. They returned by
train to his home in Westport where she was lo bear five
childre n in seven years.

shipfilling appre nt ice. He returned to the merchant marine
fo llowing his apprenticesh ip and bi;came a licensed e ngineer
serving with the A me rican Hawaiian and Dollar Lines. The loss
of the eye was to bar his return to shipbuilding whe n he and
Thea established a home in Ounicy MA and he gave up his
seagoing cari;er. Insure rs of shipbuilding concerns dedincd lo
accept such d isabilities in candidates fo r e mployme nt. He became
a mainte nance e ngineer with tht.: Wonde r Bread Bakt.:ry in
Dorchester. With World War II he was commissioned in the
U nited Stales Maritime Se rvice and re turned to sea a~ a marine
