The Issue 1/10 - Volume 113 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club Masthead January/February 2016 Commodore SandyDelaney Mills Craig samills@cox.net cedelaney1@gmail.com So, Where Do We Go From Here? BCYC has taken some major steps forward during the last few years. Thanks to the foresight and efforts of a long line of commodores, directors and a dedicated membership, we are a first-rate yacht club with an outstanding facility. We have earned an excellent reputation as a venue for major yachting events, including national championships. Our junior sailors have enjoyed remarkable success in major regattas, and our adult sailors have also done very well. BCYC is certainly known as a welcoming, friendly and inclusive club. We have done all this while at the same time, putting our club in a very strong place financially. Many friends from other clubs find it hard to believe that we completed our recent remodel and installed an elevator with no member assessment. As I look forward to this year as your commodore, I see our major goal for the near future being continued membership growth. The last part of 2015 was a banner period when it comes to new members, many of whom are already involved in BCYC’s many activities. This growth will allow our strong financial position to be even stronger, enabling the club to rely less on functions such as outside parties and banquets. The major strength of BCYC is our inclusiveness and welcoming attitude. It is amazing to me to see how quickly our membership embraces new members and friends. I have experienced many yacht clubs in my life and I can tell you that BCYC is unique in this regard. We should be very proud of our accomplishments and will continue to warmly welcome all those new to the club. As I said at the Annual Meeting in December, I would like to borrow a theme used by UCI: “Bright Past; Brilliant Future.” January/February 2016 The Masthead Executive Officers Membership Teri Leigh Commodore. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . We had our best year ever for new member families joining BCYC last year! Thirty six new members are now family. Family is a word used appropriately here at BCYC. Once you become fully involved in club activities, you begin to see familiar, friendly faces in the Columbia Room. When you go on one of our cruises and find even more friends, it’s like a great big family reunion, except with people you chose to be part of your family. Think about the last event you attended – wasn’t it wonderful? If you haven’t been to anything except Prime Rib night in a while, please get out that new calendar and sign yourself up for our next event. We will make it easy for you – just look on the last page of this issue of The Masthead, pick an event, and then commit to calling the club office to sign up. Oh, and by the way, bring your sister, brother from another mother, cousin, neighbor or workout buddy too. You have thought about inviting them out for something, right? Bring them down to meet the rest of your family. If you read these articles, please let us know when you see us at the club – we always enjoy meeting family! As rear commodore, I had the responsibility for overseeing all in-house and land-based activities. It was such a special experience to see and witness the dedication of our staff and member volunteers that make BCYC such a special place for all of us to enjoy. My new duties, being responsible for all water-based activities, bring new challenges and opportunities to meet our members, whose dedication is to see we all enjoy the on-the-water activities. I know our Cruise Committee has many special events planned, both on water and land. By now you have heard about our March desert cruise excursion to Palm Desert, just the start to a busy year. Our Race Committee is also busy hosting the Hot Rum series and the beginning of the Mills ocean series. BCYC will also be hosting the SCYA-sponsored Women’s Sailing Convention Feb. 6, an event with more than 200 attendees who will be learning the fundamentals of seamanship, as well as improving docking and navigation skills. Feb. 27 will see the second annual Coastal Safety at Sea seminar, presented by US Sailing, at the club. If you have not previously attended, or would like a safety-refresher, attendance at this seminar is so vital for anyone who spends time on the water. The ocean is so special, but not a place where anything can be taken for granted. As an avid sailor for most of my life I have learned one important lesson – the ocean is unforgiving. January/February 2016 Steve and I are excited to be the 2016 Cruise Committee chairs. We have plans for visiting some of our favorite spots, as well as introducing some new locations to the schedule. We realize that not all BCYC members have boats that can accommodate weekend outings, so we have added two land destinations to this year’s schedule. A quick look at what we have planned: March-Desert Land Cruise; April-Avalon; May-Marina del Rey YC; June-Isthmus; July-JSC Cruise to San Diego; AugustClambake (back at DRYC in Cat Harbor); September-Cambria Wine Land Cruise; and October-Avalon (CIYC). Our first 2016 cruise, March 4-6, is a desert land cruise to the Indian Wells-Palm Desert area. We will have a cocktail party at Vice Commodore Chuck Wert’s home in Indian Wells on Friday, late afternoon. Saturday morning we offer a fun golf tournament for our members at Indian Wells Country Club, and that evening there will be a group dinner at Castelli’s in Palm Desert. Sunday is on your own. A full itinerary will be sent to everyone who signs up about a week or two before the event. Our monthly meetings will be the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Please join our fun group and help us plan the upcoming cruises. We look forward to seeing you all there! I look forward to 2016, experiencing first-hand the dedication of our members who make BCYC the success we are today, on the water and on land. Thanks, Allan and Bob! Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club 3 January/February 2016 The Masthead Junior Commodore Kate Hampton Activities Kristy Parr/Kari Konapelsky kate.e.hampton@gmail.com Bkparr@earthlink.net karikona57@gmail.com New Beginnings Holiday Magic The 2015 holiday season has come and gone in grand BCYC style. Thank you to all the elves who went above and beyond in setting up and taking down the holiday magic around the club. For the second year in a row, BCYC received the Ring of Lights award for “The Most Beautiful Yacht Club on the Bay.” A special shout out to Juver Garcia and Mario Nieto, our amazing maintenance staff, and General Manager Scott Jones for making our club look spectacular! BCYC members rang in the New Year in grand fashion at the New Year’s Eve party and we are still dusting the glitter off of our cheeks. Chef George Rapicault and the staff prepared, and served, a scrumptious feast and everyone danced the night away to Steve Donn and the Heart and Soul Band. Please join us at the Activities Committee meetings the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. – help us put on more “magical” events. Happy 2016! As we dive into the New Year, the BCYC Junior Board will host several exciting events that we hope you will all attend. After much thought, I have finally chosen the theme for this year’s Bingo fundraiser. Families and guests will enjoy Bingo under the lights of the Eiffel Tower – please join us at Le BCYC Bingo, the Parisian-themed Bingo soirée! Delicious food, super fun entertainment and an exciting raffle are included, making this an excellent opportunity to spend a very enjoyable evening with family and friends. Also, all proceeds from this event will directly benefit the BCYC Junior Program. I strongly encourage you all to come out and support our young sailors. My personal goal is to make this the best Bingo event yet! Le BCYC Bingo will be held Friday, June 3, 6-9 p.m. There will be lots of laughter and fierce competition. I hope to see you all there – until then, Au Revoir! Sailing – Beautiful Being out on the water is an amazing feeling, given the beauty of the ocean and its unending movement, the colors and the breeze. Having sailed for only about 18 months, I can proudly say that I have made great progress. I went from absolutely knowing nothing, and no one, to learning new skills, competing and placing at regattas, and making so many new friends in this short amount of time. This process of learning to sail has shown me that self-motivation, patience and hard work can help me to achieve my goals both on and off the water. Being a part of BCYC Junior Sailing programs has provided so much insight. I’ve learned that wind conditions are always changing and, especially in CFJs and C420s, it is to your advantage to make good use of it. The competitiveness of the sport brings an exciting thrill, as you have to act fast and adapt to different wind patterns to be at the top of your fleet. Through sailing I have made so many friends, enjoyed that there are no gender differences, and you can be competitive at any age in the sport. My passion for sailing continues to grow and it has become a huge part of my life. - Danielle Ahir, Junior Director 4 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club The Masthead Junior Sailing Director Cameron MacLaren cameronm@bcyc.org Welcome to 2016: Regatta Recap and Sailor Drive! It’s great to be back after a busy holiday season, and I’m excited for all that the new year has to bring! Despite the short days and variable weather, we’ve had lots going on in the sailing world over the past two months. The SoCal Series is a high school event in which many of our junior sailors compete on behalf of the Corona Del Mar High School Sailing Team. The third regatta of the series was Dec. 12 at Del Rey Yacht Club, with BCYC sailors Kaiya Bertrand, Cole Hersowitz, Max Mayol, Christian Tabor and Ryan Tolsma competing. The Holiday Cup took place at Lido Isle Yacht Club, Dec. 13. Five sailors represented BCYC, with four reaching the podium! Congratulations to Thomas Nilsen for winning the 15-boat C2 fleet! In the C3 fleet, congratulations to Piper Blackband for taking 1st place, Adam Rosales for 2nd Place and Cooper Blackband for 4th Place! These were very impressive results from ALL of our sabot sailors. In the Laser Standard fleet, Reis Weigand held his own in a competitive field of some very experienced skippers across all ages. The Orange Bowl was the final regatta of 2015 and took place in Miami, Florida, at Coral Reef Yacht Club. On Christmas morning, as most kids were eating breakfast and opening presents, BCYC sailors Cameron Wood and Danielle Ahir boarded their flight across the country for this nationally attended regatta. The C420 fleet of roughly 80 boats was split into two 40-boat fleets comprising the January/February 2016 best youth sailors from all over the country. With wind speeds never below 15 MPH, and blowing over 30 MPH at times, Cameron and Danielle sailed in 12 challenging races with very limited coaching and support. Congratulations to both of them for setting this goal months ago and achieving what they set out to do! I believe other BCYC sailors will see what they accomplished and strive to attend next year. January brought many more opportunities for competitive junior sailing, both high school and club sailing. We raced in the Rose Bowl Regatta off Belmont Pier, SoCal #4 in Mission Bay, the Sabot North Series at San Diego Yacht Club, the CFJ Shadden Series and the Harold Adams Team Race Classic also at SDYC, the Midwinter Tune-Up at LIYC and the Perry #3 at US Sailing Center of Long Beach. Links to results for these regattas can be found at scyyra.org. In other BCYC news, the registration page is now live for our Spring Sailing Program that begins March 18. The registration page for 2016 Camp Corinthian Summer Program is also live! Visit bcyc.org to sign up for both programs, as well as get lots of useful information, such as dates and other details. My goal for Camp Corinthian this year is to revitalize the trend-setting Starfish Class for our youngest group of aspiring sailors (ages 5-7). I need YOUR help to get the word out and build this program back up! With the most talented teachers in Southern California, combined with an endless array of fun activities both in the classroom and on the water, the more the merrier. I would like to introduce our 2016 Camp Corinthian Sailor Drive! If you know a family with children looking for a fun way to spend the summer, refer them to BCYC for 20% off your own tuition. If you recruit five or more new families, your 2016 Camp Corinthian tuition will be free! Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions, and I’m looking forward to a successful 2016 for BCYC. The annual Recognition Luncheon honoring all of the fabulous ‘’Rock Stars” who contribute to the life of BCYC was a great success! Many thanks to Joan Delaney, who lent her many talents and chaired this very special luncheon. We have another fun exciting year planned. Please come join us, visit with friends, make new friends and enjoy. I hope to see you at our upcoming events including: Showboat Luncheon (March 17); Del Mar Race Track (July 21); and the Antiques Road Show (Nov. 10). Check your club calendar monthly for dates and times; visit bcyc.org and click on the Las Commodoras button, or feel free to contact me with your questions. On a personal note, I would like to thank Past President Nancy Bryant for her gracious support, and express my gratitude to Director and Past President Ginny Lombardi. To my 2016 Board of Directors, I am honored to have each of you on board. Looking forward to seeing everyone Feb. 18 at the Fashion Show! Teamwork BCYC ended 2015 with a flourish, capturing the Ring of Lights award for the second year in a row. Kari Konapelsky and Lauri Moffett headed up the team that transformed the club for the holiday season. Also, Rhonda Tolar, Bill McNamara and their team won the Christmas Boat Parade Sweepstakes award, the top prize for boats entered in the parade. The impressive results were accomplished because of teamwork. Upcoming events that you won’t want to miss include: Super Bowl party, Feb. 7; Valentine’s Day dinner, Feb. 14; Commodore’s Ball, Feb. 20; and Showboat, March 16-19. Make plans to be part of these BCYC traditions. The Coastal Safety at Sea seminar, Feb. 27, 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m., is hosted by BCYC and presented by US Sailing. Topics (applicable to power and sail boaters) include personal safety gear, man overboard, emergency communications and much more. Whether new to boating or a seasoned veteran, you will come away from this seminar better prepared to handle an emergency on the water. Reserve your space now by visiting the club website. With the lower level renovation and addition of the elevator project complete, we have an amazing “new” area of the club that has already gotten a great deal of use. With the heaters, beautiful lighting, barbecue grills and excellent sound system, this lower-level patio has become a go-to space for meetings, birthday celebrations and spur-of-the moment barbecue feasts. Take advantage – use this easily accessible space for your next event! “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever being able to do it.” (J.M. Barrie, Peter Pan) 6 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club The Masthead January/February 2016 we find anything needing action. Every storm is different, and as they progress, lines stretch, fray and break. Canvas tears and sometimes holds water, and your vessel or trailer becomes a bathtub. Please check your vessels regularly. Here’s looking forward to a great 2016! Port Captain Mark Silvey mbsilvey@yahoo.com El Nino Ahead Ahoy and happy 2016 (I know it is already February, but better late than never!). The marina and dry storage experienced a lot of movement again in 2015 and I would like to say welcome to all of you. As everyone is aware, the forecast is for an El Nino winter with a lot of storms bringing heavy rain, high tides and storm surges. BCYC’s marina sits in the harbor entrance flow, so we do get a strong surge when the storms are here, especially at high tide. We are asking every member with a boat in the marina and dry storage to come down now and check your vessel’s mooring lines and canvas. Lines should be a minimum of 1/2” (I prefer 5/8” or 3/4”), for safety and ease of handling. Lines needed are bow and stern, port and starboard (unless on a side-tie), and a minimum of two spring lines. All mooring lines should be in excellent condition, not frayed and/or weathered, and a minimum of two extra lines, easily accessible, should be onboard. This is for your safety as well as the other boat owners and our docks. Canvas should be checked now for tears, bad stitching or loose connections and leaks, before the winds and rain find them, or you could lose your canvas. Sail boaters, please tie your halyards off of the mast, to mitigate noise from beating on the mast in winds. This will also stop any damage to your mast and rigging. As port captain, I walk the docks and dry storage areas regularly and will monitor all vessels as the storms come. Susie Brodrick, marina manager, or I will contact you if House & Grounds Larry Michaels lmichaels58@gmail.com New Year Improvements Greetings for the New Year! Since late last year, we’ve seen substantial usage and benefit of our new marina restrooms and patio area. There have been several wellattended events recently that were enhanced by the new barbecue grills. We’ve added new, larger lockers for member usage and they’ve rented out quickly. The elevator facilitates ADA compliant access to all levels of the club, and food and beverage service is easily offered for all events. This year, we will look at the house sound system to identity where improvements can be made. We’ll do the same with the main floor lighting system to increase the number of lighting levels for the many different events hosted at the club. Also, up for consideration, is the camera/security monitoring system. One suggestion I received was for one or two cameras showing the channel and marina area so it can be viewed on the club website. The House and Grounds Committee meets at 7:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month. Members are encouraged to attend and bring suggestions for how we can improve your experience at our club. You can also send suggestions to me at lmichaels58@gmail.com. Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club 7 January/February 2016 The Masthead Angling Angling Sail Fleet Captain Paul DeCapua Sail Fleet Captain Rhonda Tolar asayloush@aol.com rhtolar@gmail.com paul.decapua@cox.net Paul DeCapua paul.decapua@cox.net Safety At Sea Crab And Lobster Potting Last September, a large group of BCYC members chartered boats to discover the Pacific Northwest. Our boat included me, Russell Grant, Debbie and Fraser Fisher, and Secretary Steve and Lauri Moffett. One of the most exciting activities on our boat was crab potting – we dropped our pots every night and caught over 80 crabs. A license is required to catch crab and the crab pots came with the boat. Regulations stipulate that you can only keep adult male crabs, so out of the 80 caught we could only keep five. Important note: crabs like to eat fish, not leftover food from dinner. Former BCYC members Sam and Gail Beller demonstrated to our group how to humanely kill a crab, as well as cook them. Crab potting is exciting and a very fun experience to share with your family and friends! Our next challenge was to catch lobster, definitely more challenging, because lobsters can get out of the hoop nets. Lobster season opened at 12:01 a.m. Oct. 3. Our group (me, Russell, Debbie and Fraser) set out for the “midnight run” along with many other crazy folks trying to catch the first lobster of the season. By 3 a.m., we had only caught one very small lobster — not bad for first timers. We all gave thanks remembering the moment, and returned our catch to the sea. Lobster pots and licenses are available at most sporting goods stores and West Marine. You can set lobster pots near the entrance to Newport Harbor, best done right after dusk. Just like crabs, lobsters like to eat stinky, cut-up fish! Our challenge: to catch at least one legal lobster by the end of lobster season, March 16. 2016 angling events – BCYC anglers wanted! Any members of BCYC, experienced or not, let’s go out this year and have an active presence and participate in local fishing events. If any BCYC members are interested in entering a specific angler challenge, please send me an email. If you need a boat, I am offering my 32-foot Everglade to be used as the BCYC angler boat for 2016. 8 The Coast Guard cutter tuned in to a faint distress signal from a sinking pleasure craft. “What is your position? Repeat, what is your position?” asked the radio operator aboard the cutter. Finally a faint reply crackled over the static: “I’m executive vice president of First Global Bank please hurry!” While funny, the exchange points out the need to know where you are – your position – at all times. This is particularly true for sailboat racers, since some races involve starting at a certain location, going around one or more marks, and finishing at a different location. Having a GPS on board is therefore critical to your success…and your safety. Speaking of safety, as we did at the beginning of 2015, BCYC will host another Coastal Safety At Sea Seminar, Feb. 27. This seminar is a “must” for first-mates. Even if you attended in 2015, plan on attending again...or risk being awarded the Chanticleer trophy for losing the skipper someplace between Avalon and Newport Beach. Rule #1 of the Racing Rules of Sailing dictates that “a boat or competitor shall give all possible help to any person or vessel in danger.” Notice the word “any.” Of course, we would all do the same, but making it a “rule” emphasizes the importance of safety. Each year, during Race Committee training, I end the session with a strong reminder to be safe. Whether motoring to/ from the start line or while at anchor during the race, the skipper of the Race Committee boat is responsible for the safety of everyone aboard. The same applies to all boats. Be safe! A Note from our Chaplain . . . “Time is like a river. You cannot touch the same water twice, because the flow that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of your life.” Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club - unknown - The Masthead January/February 2016 Law Offices of Rolf J.
