Dear Westbrook families,
I am so excited about October…… it is one of my favorite months of the year because of the
beautiful leaves, blue skies (sometimes), apple picking, crisp mornings, Fall carnivals, and of
course, Halloween!
Halloween celebrations:
Please read carefully!
I am sure your children are already making choices about what to “be” for Halloween. As you
help them make a good choice for a costume, please remember our Westbrook guidelines:
• Do not let your child bring any type of weapon, fantasy or look-­‐alike. This includes plastic swords, fake guns, or anything that could be perceived as a weapon. • Costumes that are violent or bloody are not allowed. • Masks are not allowed, as they often make it harder for the child to see when walking on unfamiliar paths. Simple makeup is often a better choice if needed. • Rollerblades or skateboards are not permitted. • For safety reasons, please be sure that your child can see and walk around easily in his/her costume. • If you have any doubts about the appropriateness of any portion of your child’s costume, please contact me and I will be glad to advise you. • If a teacher feels there is something inappropriate for a child to wear while at WB school, we will place it safely in their backpack to wear at home.. *** IF your child will not be celebrating Halloween, we will provide an alternate place for
him/her to spend the afternoon at school.
*** AM kindergarten will have their own parade; please read your classroom teacher’s
information about their class’ Halloween celebration.
On Friday, October 30, the WB Halloween will begin when students put on their costumes
sometime after lunch. Around 2:00, students will participate in an all school “sing along”.
(This is ONLY for students, as unfortunately, we do not have enough room in the gym for any
families). We ask that you honor this, parents will not be allowed in the Sing Along.
Our Parade will begin at 2:20. Students will be leaving from the front gym, and walking along
the blacktop. We welcome parents to watch from the edges of the blacktop, along the North and
East parts of the school and playground.
If it is rainy or too cold, we will walk indoors, from the front gym to the back gym.
Parents may line the back gym walls, or the hallway going from the front gym to the back gym.
***Classroom parties are for the students and only the room parents who are running the party.
There is not a lot of room for other adults or siblings. Anyone who is entering the school must
sign in at the office and be wearing a sticker.
This is no different than any other school day, when we enforce our school security for any visitor
to our school. It may take awhile, and we will have extra help in the office, but everyone, even
room parents, must enter through the front door and sign in. I am sure you agree that safety and
security at school is what we all want.
Your cooperation is very much appreciated.
Also, remember that only food that Room Parents have asked for and approved, will be
allowed at the classrooms for the Halloween parties. This includes goody bags…no food of any
kind in goody bags will be given to students. This will ensure student safety and welfare,
especially those with food allergies
We want to make this a safe and fun holiday for all of our Westbrook families.
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parent-teacher conferences begin next week. This is such an important time for you and your
child’s teacher to review your child’s progress so far this year. Areas of strength are identified
and celebrated, and areas that are challenging are discussed. By discussing what is observed at
home as well as at school, you and the teacher can mutually decide on plans for a successful
school year for your child.
By sharing what you both know about the child, you become a team working together for your
child’s growth in school this year.
Here are some suggestions for making the most of this meeting time.
• Be on time for your conference so you can end on time for the next parent. • Talk to your child before the conference. What are his/her favorite activities in school? What part of the day is more difficult? Is there anything he/she would like the teacher to know? • At the conference, besides learning about your child’s academic performance, ask about his/her behavior, relationships with peers, ability to initiate and maintain friendships, or solve conflicts. How does your child react to trying new things? What does he/she do when things are challenging? • Finally, ask what YOU can do at home to help your child. • After the conference, be sure to sit down with your child about the great things he/she is doing at school, areas for growth, and any plan you and the teacher might have made. Our teachers put a great deal of time preparing for conferences; enjoy this focused time about
your child’s growth and development as a student.

Dear Westbrook Parents,
The Glenview Education Foundation (GEF) is an all-volunteer, parent-run fundraising
organization that believes incremental private funding is essential to a high-performing public
school district. GEF will be running its Annual Fund Drive 10/12 - 11/6, and I am writing you to
encourage your participation.
Last year, $253,000 was donated back to District 34 schools in the form of advanced technology
and educational programming. The following is a list of grants that received funding from GEF

Vision and Hearing Screenings will take place the week of October 26th on Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday. If you do not want your child screened please notify the health office.
The health office can always use extra pants and leggings in sizes 6 – 10. Please keep Westbrook
in mind when you are going through your children’s closet.
Please remember to call the health office if your child will not be in school. The number is

HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
Parents, if you have a gently used costume that your family no longer uses, please consider
donating it to Westbrook for children who may need a costume for Halloween.
DEBRA GELFAND FUND
Thank you for helping your children bring in quarters to support the 25th Anniversary of the
Debra Gelfand Fund. Please note that on Friday October 23 we will be collecting quarters again
for this month. The fund supports children by providing everything from school supplies, to
boots and coats, to field trip fees, and any school related expenses.
The Annual Westbrook -­‐ Glen Grove Fall Carnival is just around the corner! Kids Care Food Drive
to benefit local food pantries
October 19-23, 2015
The students of District 34, Our Lady of Perpetual Help and District 30
are coming together in conjunction with Character Counts week, to collect
food items to be donated to the Northfield Township Food Pantry.
Items of great need are: pancake mix and syrup, pasta sauce, juice/juice
boxes, coffee, tea, kid’s snacks/snack packs, cookies, crackers, macaroni &
cheese, instant mashed potatoes, peanut butter, jelly, paper products,
cereal, oatmeal, canned spaghetti, ravioli, chili, and corned beef hash.
(Please check expiration dates.)
Drop boxes will be located in each school. Daily collection tallies will be

chicken pot pie with lots of seasonal
vegetables, home-made macaroni
and cheese, and fresh tomato soup
are just a few ideas.

Fresh Tomato Soup Recipe
Ingredients:
2 cups fat-free, less-sodium chicken broth
1 cup chopped onion
3/4 cup chopped celery
1 tablespoon thinly sliced fresh basil
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 pounds plum tomatoes, cut into wedges
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
6 tablespoons plain low-fat yogurt
3 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil
Directions:
Combine first 6 ingredients in a large saucepan;
bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer 30
minutes. Place half of tomato mixture in a
blender. Remove center piece of blender lid (to
allow steam to escape); secure blender lid on
blender. Place a clean towel over opening in
blender lid (to avoid splatters). Blend until
smooth. Pour into a large bowl. Repeat
procedure with remaining tomato mixture. Stir
in salt and pepper. Ladle 3/4 cup soup into each
of 6 bowls; top each serving with 1 tablespoon
yogurt and 1 1/2 teaspoons basil.
