Dear Readers,
First and foremost, we are so proud to have launched our newest
Sports & Activities Directory in Davie/Cooper City/SW Ranches this
October! We were overwhelmed with the incredible reception from
residents, businesses, sports organizations, and the towns themselves. After
7 months in the making, the magazine broke every record in advertising sales
we had ever experienced and we are so appreciative for the support! Our
team worked very hard to make this happen and we congratulate our newest
Publisher, Nikki Reading, for the fantastic inaugural issue!
The more advertising that comes in, the more we are able to give back to
the sports programs, schools and not-for-profit organizations in the areas where
we publish. So thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support! We
encourage feed back from our readers on what they want to see and we want to
know how we are doing on an ongoing basis. We do love that our readers help
us to be the eyes and the ears in the schools and parks by letting us know when
things of interest are happening in our cities. Please continue to email or call so we
can continue to be the only single complete source of information on sports, health,
recreation and schools in your town.
The 10th Anniversary $10,000 Giveaway continues this quarter! So far, three of
the hundreds of readers who entered have won $1,000 each to use with any one of
our current advertisers. That means there are 7 more readers who will win during
the next nine months, so get your entry in today! All entries who did not win will
roll over to the next drawing on December 31, 2012 where three more readers will
win $1,000! Go to pages 10 & 11 for entry details and GOOD LUCK!
Finally, we jam packed this issue with an abundance of fun family activities
happening during October, November and December. Make a date with your
family to spend quality time away from the house and the everyday distractions.
Find family activities that connect all of you together, such as volunteering to
help the less fortunate with food drives at Thanksgiving through Harvest Fest
- featured in this issue. Perhaps, you can all enjoy and benefit from entering
in and training together for a 5K Walk/Run? Look in our events section for
puppet shows, story times, Halloween and Holiday events, Miami Dolphins
and Florida Panthers games. Enroll in Martial Arts as a
family or go fishing, hit golf or tennis balls together,
take a family fitness challenge. It is the BEST time of
the year in South Florida - so GET OUT AND PLAY!
Happy Holidays to you and yours! May the
season bring us all good health, good fortune, love,
laughter and happiness.
Our best to you, always,
Margot & Nicole

Weston Ranked as One of
Money Magazine’s
2012 Best Places to live
T
he City of Weston has been awarded the
prestigious recognition of being one of Money
Magazine’s Best Places to Live 2012.
Per the CNNMoney article, “These terrific small cities
offer what American families care about most - strong job
opportunities, great schools, low crime, quality health care,
and plenty to do. And they’re true communities, too”.
City leaders are thrilled as this recognition comes on
the heels of the October 2011 Businessweek ranking
of Weston as the #1 Nationwide Housing Market from
February 2009 to August 2011.
Only three cities in the State of Florida made the
top 100 ranking: The City of Weston, ranked #63;
the City of Riverview, Florida ranked #65, and the
City of Coral Springs, ranked #94.
The ranking takes into account factors including
financial, housing, education, quality of life, leisure and
culture and weather. A synopsis along with the statistics
provides:
“Weston boasts a 42,500-square-foot YMCA, an
extensive network of bike paths, two 18-hole golf
courses, well-known local athletic leagues, and the sunny
(but humid) Florida weather necessary to enjoy them
throughout the year. The city’s affluent residents are so
devoted to their outdoor activities that many aspects of
Weston’s community life, like the athletic leagues, are
run by volunteers. The downside comes when it’s time to
focus on work: Residents face a lengthy commute to Fort
Lauderdale and Miami”.

Chip in for
Kids in Distress
E
njoy a day of fun in the sun while you help bridge
the gap in supportive services for abused and neglected
children in South Florida. Members of the Kids In Distress
Auxiliary are pleased to announce they are bringing back
their very popular KID Auxiliary Golf Tournament. It will
be held on Friday, November 2nd, with registration and
pre-tournament box lunch at 11:30 AM and a shotgun
start at 1:00 PM, followed by dinner. The tournament will
take place at Jacaranda Golf Club at 9200 West Broward
Blvd., in Plantation. Players of all skill levels are welcome
to participate in this 18-hole scramble.
Proceeds from the golf tournament will help raise funds
for Kids In Distress, which is a non-profit charitable
organization dedicated to protecting children in South
Florida from abuse and neglect. They strive to establish
strong and healthy families that can care for their children
and keep them safe.
Today’s economy is making it difficult for more and more
families to survive day to day. Members of the community
will be supporting these efforts when they participate in
the KID Auxiliary Golf Tournament. With your help, local
families will strengthen and get on their feet again. The
individual player fee of $175 includes greens fees, cart,
pre-tournament box lunch, dinner and prizes. For $40,
non-golfers will be able to purchase tickets in advance for
the dinner. In addition to participating as a golfer, there
are also sponsorship opportunities that range from Title
($5,000) to Tee Sponsor ($200).
This is a wonderful opportunity for the South Florida
community to enjoy an afternoon of golf and great meals
while supporting a growing population of abused and
neglected children. By taking part in the tournament,
participants are both helping Kids In Distress and
networking with business associates.
On behalf of the children we serve, we thank you for
your gift! Without the support of individual donors and
corporate partners in our community, Kids In Distress
could never care for the thousands of children and families
each year who need a safe place to live. Change a child’s
life….change a child’s future.
For further information or to purchase tickets please

A

s a triathlete, Molli Serrano set her eyes on the ultimate
competition…the Ironman World Championship. Three weeks
before she was scheduled to leave for a qualifying race, she found
out she would be in a fight for her life.
The Ironman World Championship is one of the toughest
Ironman races where athletes from around the world compete just
to qualify for an invitation to attend in Kona, Hawaii. An Ironman
consists of swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running a
marathon of 26.2 miles, all in one day.
Serrano, having finished three prior Ironman competitions,
was training daily. In May 2011, she was riding with her group of
cyclists in Weston for a 40-mile ride, when she felt a pain under
her ribs. Another physician cyclist asked her to get checked out.
The diagnosis on June 2, 2011, was Pancreatic Cancer. Serrano,
37 at the time, and a mother of 6 year-old twins, would need all
her strength to conquer the disease. After extensive visits with
doctors and reviewing several opinions, Serrano scheduled to have
the Whipple Procedure at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital
in New York City by Dr. Yumon Fong. The Whipple procedure
is a surgery, which consists of removing half of the stomach, the
gall bladder, the common bile duct, the head of the pancreas, and
regional lymph nodes. The incision would be a vertical cut from
her rib cage to her pelvis.
Serrano was supposed to head to Austria to race and hopefully
qualify for the World Championship, but instead she was flying to
New York for surgery scheduled on June 28, the 7th birthday of
her twins, Ella and Nick. “We had no choice. The small tumor
they found needed to be removed for me to survive,” Serrano said.
“They removed the tumor and tested it, and it was cancer for sure,
along with one of my lymph nodes.”
The odds are not in her favor, if you look at the statistics.
She was told she had a 20% chance to live past the first year.
“Check,” Serrano said. “June of 2012 was one year clean for
me.” The percentages go down each year after that. There
is a 6% survival rate of living past 5 years as a pancreatic
cancer patient. “I’ve had six clean scans since my surgery, and
I’m hoping to be the 6%,” she said. “I hope more and more
Pancreatic Cancer patients can fight this horrible disease so we
can change that 6%.”
Fight is just what Serrano did. Seven days after her extensive
surgery, she was sitting on a stationary bike in New York, sending
her family and friends photos of her pedaling. Just two weeks to
the day after surgery, she was back on her road bike and cycling
30 miles at a time. “I had to ride to prove I was stronger than
the cancer,” she said. “It was the only way I could deal with it.”
She began chemotherapy and even was required to wear a chemo
pump for 24 hours a day for six weeks through radiation therapy.
Serrano still woke up every day and put her bike in her SUV and
headed out to Weston to ride with her group. “Sure there were
days I would wake up and look at my scar and ask myself why I was
even doing this,” she said, “But my bike was my escape.”
Serrano was selected to appear on the Today Show’s Hoda and
Kathi Lee segment Everybody Has a Story in July. Her friend sent
in the story about how Molli’s strength and inspiration has spread
to everyone she knows. “Even on my best day, my sister is stronger
than I am. You would think I would be running circles around her,
but she runs circles around all of us,” her sister Nikki Kantis said.
At first, Serrano and her husband decided the twins did not need
to know what the word cancer meant, but after she spoke at The
Purple Stride 5K race to raise awareness for Pancreatic Cancer, her
son became aware of the illness. “I remember him saying, ‘Wow,
that’s a really bad disease’,” she said. “I told him yes and then he
asked me, ‘Can you die from that?’ So I had to answer yes. Then
he said, ‘Are you going to die from that?’”
That’s why Serrano continues to train and wants to show her
children that she is staying strong by biking and running. And
although Serrano did not have enough time this year to train
and qualify for the World Ironman, she was chosen as a Kona
Inspired Contestant and has accepted the chance to race on
October 13, 2012 in Kona.
Serrano has been swimming at Plantation’s Central Park pool
with the Plantation Masters’ Swim Team. She runs on her own,
and still bikes in Weston to train. “Sunday I rode 100 miles to
train for the championship race,” she said. “I have a great support
group with the people I cycle with. I couldn’t have come this far
without them, my husband and kids, and my family.” This has
been a dream of Serrano’s. The race in Kona is where is she will
conquer her fourth Ironman. “This one is different for me. This
time I am crossing the finish line as a pancreatic survivor,” she
said. “I’m sure I will finish, even if I have to walk across the line.”
If you want to see how Molli finishes up in Kona, October 13,
follow her results on: www.Ironman.com, go to RESULTS, hit
IRONMAN, then look under Kona, Hawaii and search for Molli
Serrano for her time and place.

I
magine for a minute that you have to stockpile 38.5 years worth of groceries for a
5 person family, then organize the groceries into bags for each week. Now make this all
happen in 2 months during your “free” time. At the interview with Renee Herman, founder
of Harvest Drive, this unimaginable task became crystal clear as she stated with conviction
that this year’s Harvest Drive would provide 2,000 families in need with enough groceries
for a week, including a full Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Harvest Drive and Renee Herman is still at the helm
with the same fierce passion to feed those in need as when she first began. In 1992, Renee
took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide
a weeks worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She
rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of
Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families were fed.
Yet, that was not the end, but a beginning to so much more.
Each year since then, the number of families in need multiplied, as did the amount of help
required to meet their needs. After ten years organizing and doing the lion’s share of this annual
event, Renee was blessed with two people, Patti Bradley and Kim ONeill, who volunteered to share
the responsibilities. It takes hundreds upon hundreds of people to make this happen every year.
“Organizations such as the Rotary Club of Weston and Plantation Rotary have been instrumental
in helping with donations and money to buy groceries. Businesses such as The Castle Group help
with a tremendous amount of volunteers. Individuals such as Jamie McDonnell, Michael Dagen
and Jim Norton, among many others, have been “life savers” in the 11th hour when we did not
have enough food for the promised families,” said Renee.
“But what really makes this work, what is really special about Harvest Drive, is that it is
the students and the schools that gather what we need and volunteer their time to make this
a reality,” she added. This year, over 80 public and private schools are involved in the mission
to collect enough food to feed 2,000 families throughout Broward County. Distribution sites
will be set up at 10 of the schools, with Western High School being the largest. New this
year, Harvest Drive has been added to the business curriculum of Broward County public high
schools. “It is a very exciting time for us at Harvest Drive. The students will be instrumental
in gathering more outside support from businesses and individuals through mass sponsorship
letters and marketing our organization,” said Renee. Watching children work so hard to
help other children is what she is most proud of in her 20 years of Harvest Drive. It is hope
that the next generation will stamp out hunger.
Families are referred to Harvest Drive by different social service agencies, as well as by
the Broward County school social workers, based on their financial need. In addition to the
week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving Dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest
Drive’s makeshift store for toys, clothing, baby item, and other household items that have
been donated. Volunteers work all year long amassing donations for the “Harvest Drive
store” so that the wonderful families may find things they need at no cost to them. Things
such as toiletries, shoes, gently used toys, clothes and books that many of us may take for
granted are most in need by these families.
Fundraising efforts and collections are underway now for Harvest Drive, a 501(c)3 not
for profit organization. “100% goes to these families in need! No one gets paid to run
this organization,” stated Herman. “We need more help. What keeps me awake at night
worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week of Thanksgiving, we will be
short. We need cash donations so I can buy the items we are short in the 11th hour. I
cannot bear that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals,

hef Aboud will tell you his secret, gourmet
recipe himself, “I buy the freshest, highest
quality ingredients and prepare innovative
meals daily with inspiration and enjoyment,
and I always strive to give my patrons what
they deserve.” That, in an oyster shell, is La
Brochette Bistro’s recipe for success.
I speak not as a writer on assignment, but as
a local resident paying tribute to a true jewel
of a restaurant that many years ago I would
have driven by unknowingly, only to dine at
inferior restaurants. I am not the only one who
has seen the light. His regulars, like me, are
loyal and appreciative ‘foodies’ who have
given word of mouth advertising a whole new
meaning! People are driving from upwards of
an hour away and making reservations weeks
ahead for a coveted table during prime time
hours on weekends. Thanks to the consistent 3
½ & 4 star ratings bestowed by Miami Herald,
a recent feature on Check, Please! and now
Zaget’s 2012 food rating of 28 points, the
highest given in Broward County, my favorite
table is now always taken!
Chef Aboud Kobaitri was born and raised
in Lebanon, trained as an apprentice chef in
Paris, and attended Culinary School in Oslo,
Norway. Upon meeting his native South
Floridian wife-to-be while she was traveling
abroad, Aboud relocated to Cooper City. He
and Lori married and shortly thereafter, Aboud
realized his long awaited dream of opening a
restaurant. La Brochette opened its doors in
1993, right here in Cooper City, and has been
in the same location for almost 20 years at the
NE corner of Hiatus Road and Sheridan Street.
His international exposure and influences bring
unique flavors and interesting combinations of
ingredients to the menu daily. New diners to
La Brochette are transfixed by the countless
off-menu appetizer, seafood and meat specials
that servers eloquently describe aloud in detail
to wet the appetite. It is confounding to try to
narrow the selection to just one!
Chef Aboud is always on the lookout for the
next, best thing and is duly credited to be the
first restaurant in the United States to serve an
Amazonian fish from Peru called Paiche (my
personal favorite). Paiche is a white, firm
textured fish with a subtle elegant flavor and
Chef prepares it with a Beurre Noisette sauce,
dried blueberries, and almonds and serves it
with assorted grilled vegetables. That would
be just one of the 5-7 fish specials prepared
differently from day to day including
Hawaiian Sea Bass (better than Chilean)
or Sea Whistle Salmon (to die for!). Not
in the mood for fish? Indulge in Kurobuta
“Japanese” Pork grilled with a raspberry
chipotle sauce or the melt in your mouth Osso
Bucco that has been simmering all day long
and falls off the bone. Finally, as if there is
one inch of room left, you must have a dessert
even if you have to take it home! Ridiculously
satisfying in every sense, the Rum & White
Chocolate Bread Pudding is Chef’s personal
favorite, but can we talk about the crazy
cheesecakes for a minute? Lately, and I am
not kidding, I have witnessed the following;
Popcorn Cheesecake (requested over and
over) and Krispy Kreme Donut Cheesecake
(enough said!).
Rounding out the complete dining
experience, La Brochette has given itself a
facelift in the last year with a warm and cozy
bistro decor, as well as an updated and friendly
bar area with comfortable seating to enjoy
tapas and wine. Come solo or with some
friends. Tuesday night is my favorite “date
night” at La Brochette, visit their website for
“A Toast To Tuesdays” specials!
Altogether the best kept, non-secret, in SW
Broward for exceptional food and excellent
service, and La Brochette is in close proximity
to all of us. For a date night, solo night,
business dinner and small parties, La Brochette
is your go to, but not on Mondays as that
is the only day they are closed. Special
dietary requests are accommodated including
vegan, vegetarian and gluten free, just ask. I
recommend that you call ahead to reserve a
table, but don’t take mine!
La Brochette Bistro is located in the Embassy
Lakes Shopping Plaza at 2635 N. Hiatus
Road in Cooper City. Call (954) 435-9090

ome people dance to the beat of a different
drum, but Tiffany Paige Maher can dance to the
beat of any drummer.
Less than two years ago, she was giving the
salutatorian speech at South Plantation High
School in front of thousands of people. This
summer, she was stunning millions of viewers
around the country as a contestant on FOX’s So
You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD). And not
just any contestant, but a finalist. She beat out
tens of thousands of the most talented dancers
from around the U.S. to make it as one of the
top two female dancers for Season 9 of SYTYCD.
Talk about growing by leaps and bounds!
Of course, one Sunrise dance studio doesn’t
just think Tiffany can dance – they’ve known it
since the 19-year-old phenom gave her inaugural
performance at the age of 2 ½. The first time the
Plantation native ever took the stage to perform, she
had yet to set foot in a dance class. The way the
effervescent teen puts it, she was born into Dance
FX...literally. Tiffany’s mother was pregnant with
her when her sister Brittany was taking classes at
the studio. After she was born, Tiffany would tag
along to the weekly classes. Dance FX studio owner Joan Bartoletti
couldn’t help but notice the toddler sitting in
her stroller in the back of the room, especially
when she started following the routine to a tee.
Bartoletti pulled out a costume for the bubbly
brunette, put her in a local show and the rest, as
they say, is history. Following her stage debut,
Tiffany took her first class. Not just out of the ordinary, but downright
extraordinary -- that’s pretty much been the
running theme of Tiffany’s life. At age 12, she
captured the highly coveted award for Dancer
of the Year at Tremaine Dance Conventions. It
would be the first of many. Although the songs
and costumes were ever-changing, her desire to
dance remained steadfast.
Tiffany was well aware she couldn’t just
rest on her laurels in dance. She gave 110
percent when it came to her education as well.
As salutatorian at SPHS, she graduated with a
5.2 grade point average and had 11 advanced
placement classes under her belt. Tiffany
explains that all of her other accomplishments
weren’t in spite of dance but because of dance,
which gave her the drive to succeed. By the time she started her freshman year at
the University of Central Florida in the fall of
2011, Tiffany had landed roles in the Hollywood
blockbusters Step Up 4 and Rock of Ages.
Somehow, she also made time to film a pilot for
the Disney Channel. As for school, the dancer
never missed a beat. She finished her first year
at UCF with almost enough credits to be a junior.
On the heels of her banner year came SYTYCD.
Being selected as a finalist for the televised dance
competition was the culmination of all Tiffany’s
hard work and dreams. Tiffany said, “The
journey has been absolutely the most incredible
experience I have ever had! I am out of my mind
with excitement. Making it to the top two girls
in the country is such an honor and privilege! It’s
like a dream you never want to wake up from.”
The next stop for Tiffany is the SYTYCD Dance
live tour, which kicks off at the end of October.
Despite the fact she is part of a national tour, the gal
who was coined the “girl next door” by SYTYCD
creator, executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe
remains humble and gives credit where credit is due.
In addition to having the support of her parents
and sister Brittany, Tiffany attributes having Dance
FX as her only studio to part of her success. Looking
back, Tiffany says that the studio was a safe haven
when contending with high school bullies, who, at
times, could be relentless. “The studio was just
like family. If I didn’t feel comfortable at what I
was doing, it would be harder to learn and grow.
I felt safe and at home at Dance FX. All of my
friends there became like sisters. It was just so
different,” she said.
In the future, she hopes to continue to dance
professionally in Hollywood. She also wants
to start a non-profit organization to offer dance
to anyone and everyone who doesn’t have the
means to do it themselves.
For the girl who is as gracious as she is
graceful, the sky is the limit!

P
laying in the major leagues for 19 years, former left-handed pitcher Al Leiter
is now a commentator for the Major League Baseball Network. Leiter went with four
teams to the World series, and won two. He won World Series rings with the Blue
Jays in 1993, and again with the Marlins in 1997. He began his career when he
was 8, on his hometown fields in Tom’s River, New Jersey. Leiter weighs in on what
he currently sees in Little League and Club teams with his own children involved in
volleyball and baseball.
S&A: How did you begin playing baseball?
Leiter: Things were different when I began at 8 years of age. We only had 3
divisions; Pee Wee, Little League and Babe Ruth for the older kids. There were no travel
teams or club ball. It actually leveled the playing field and gave more kids, like myself,
the opportunity to play and get noticed.
S&A: Do your own children play on club teams?
Leiter: My wife and I decided to wait until they were older, so now they do.
I don’t think you need to begin before age 10. Any time before that is silly to me.
We need to let kids play in their towns. Just letting them play and enjoy a sport will
decrease burnout. In baseball now, they have program with an infield of a 50-foot
pitching distance and 70-foot base paths, for 12 and 13 year-olds, which they didn’t
have when I grew up. This is a great transition from Little League and a perfect time
when the club and travel teams would be a good idea.
S&A: Are travel teams and club ball the only
way to get noticed by colleges?
Leiter: They are not the only way, but they can be a good way. I just wish
everyone had the opportunity to play on them. These teams eliminate a lot of really
great athletes from being noticed. It can cost thousands of dollars to play on a team
and requires a huge time commitment for the players and their families. These teams
participate in tournaments where the college coaches go to recruit players. It used
to be that the coaches and scouts went out to the local fields and high schools. Less
and less of that is going on. There are a few tournaments in the country where every
college is present to look at the players on these clubs, therefore a lot of players go
unnoticed. I hope it can change. There are a few states, Florida being one of them,
where several high schools still have a good following of scouts recruiting athletes.
A quality high school coach will reach out and promote kids.
S&A: You were drafted right out of high school,
how do you feel about playing in college first?
Leiter: I wish I had someone in my ear when I was a senior in high school,
telling me to go to college, play, and get an education. I feel if you are ‘that good’
in high school, you will be ‘that good’ in three years and still have a degree to use
in the future. The odds of making money in the majors are slim.
S&A: What can you do to increase the odds?
Leiter: There are about 4 million kids in organized baseball in our country.
Then, in high school and college, the numbers of players still involved is about
150,000. From that, about 1500 baseball players get drafted each year. The
average that make the big league is about 10% or 150 players. Then two-thirds of
those who make a team spend less than one year in the big leagues. That leaves
roughly 50 players, give or take a few, playing an average of 3 years in the majors.
That’s why I feel going to play in college is important. I was the 5th pitcher drafted
in 1984 as a senior. I had a college offer from Stanford and I actually signed an
intent to play with the Florida Gators, but when the Yankees chose me as their 2nd
pick, I went for it. The odds were against me and there are plenty of 1st rounders
that never even make it. I am happy with the way my situation turned out, but I
would advise my son to go to college.
S&A: Did you have a mentor when you played?
Leiter: Gil Patterson, now the pitching coordinator for the Oakland A’s,
helped me back after shoulder surgery and always gave me direction. Also, Dave
Righetti, now the pitching coach for the Giants, took me under his wing. I still keep
in touch with them.
S&A: Personal career highlight?
Leiter: I have a few that are special to me. One of the great ones was
when Manager Jim Leyland had me pitch the seventh game for the Marlins in
the World Series. We won the game in 11 innings. And I will always cherish
the first No-Hitter for the Marlins I threw in 1996.

In the summer of 2011, Garrison learned that the

Park Avenue Gymnastics was opened in 1985 by Stu Greenberg. The first
location was in Hallandale, Florida. It was a 10,000 square foot building with
no air conditioning, just big fans and open garage doors. Seven gyms later,
they are proud to have come such a long way! They currently have 2 incredible
facilities with state-of-the-art gymnastics equipment, outstanding coaches and
teachers, and everything you need to become a high level gymnast or have
fun as a pre-school or recreational gymnast.
Park Avenue Gymnastics offers a variety of classes for boys and
girls of all ages & skill levels from Mom & Tot through Competitive team.
They offer classes in Gymnastics, Tumbling & Trampoline, TaeKwon Do
and Swimming. They also do dynamite birthday parties and gymnastics
camps for days off school, Spring Break & Summer!
It is Park Avenue Gymnastic’s goal to develop fitness, character and
self-esteem in children through the sport of Gymnastics. By enrolling your
child in classes, you will be helping them improve their strength, flexibility,
balance and coordination. At the same time they will learn discipline and
improve their cognitive and motor skills. All of this and the opportunity
to meet and make new friends and have fun exercising!
Park Avenue Gymnastics is proud to have a long history of developing
outstanding gymnasts, but more importantly, amazing young women and
student athletes. Over the past 27 years Park Avenue has made it a point
to celebrate an athlete’s ability to “finish what they started”. They honor
every one of our athletes who graduate high school while still competing
in the very intense sport of gymnastics.
In the last two years, Park Avenue Gymnastics has graduated twice
as many senior gymnasts as any other gymnastics club in the state. In
2011, they graduated seven seniors and in 2012, they graduated 4 more.
In each of these years, they had more than anyone in the state. Some of
their athletes continue to do gymnastics in college, either in NCAA Division
I athletics or club gymnastics. Others decide when high school is over, to
hang up their leotards and change their focus to other aspects of their
lives, Park Avenue celebrates both paths.

TIME TO TAkE STOck
By Jodi Kurry Cohen, MS.Ed, Early Childhood Director, Temple Dor Dorim
D
ecorations come out, lists are
made and the holiday cards are
ordered. Once the pop up Halloween
stores put their signs up and the candy
aisles at CVS are filled, it signals the
onslaught of the holiday season and
the hustle and bustle that follows. The malls beckon, urging us to remember
everyone on our lists, decorate our homes and make sure we’ve got everything
we need to entertain even the largest of armies.
A few weeks before it all begins, the stores prepare for the season. From
decorations and displays to merchandise and marketing they “take stock” and
do an inventory of what they have, what they’ll need and most importantly
anticipate what their customers will want. They decide what will fill their shelves
and how they will go about reaching out to the people that are important
to them. This step the stores take is vital in forecasting their outcome. Their
success in the end completely relies on their ability to stop, look, listen and
understand in order to meet a demand.
What if, just like the department stores and shops, we used the impending
arrival of the holiday season to stop and “take stock.” What if we stopped
to inventory what we have in our lives, what we need in our lives and most
importantly what we want in our lives? In doing so, would our holiday
celebrations and traditions be the same or different than before?
What if rather than allowing candy corn, pumpkins and harvest wreaths
to elicit a Pavlov response to make lists, decorate and shop they instead
triggered in us a response to stop, look at our lives and take inventory;
the people in it, who or what might be missing and what else needed
to be done or added to “fill our shelves” in preparing for the holiday.
Would the meaning of the holidays completely change for us? Would our
“to do lists” be the same?
In rushing to go and do for the holidays we often move right past the reason
why we’re doing the things we’re doing in the first place. Instead of stopping
to reflect on people in our lives, we focus on what we need to do and go buy
to make the holidays just right. What if we went about it in a different way?
What if our lists consisted of who we needed to reach out to this holiday
that should be in our lives but for some reason hadn’t been lately. Another
item on the list could be thinking about the people in our lives and if we are
giving them what they truly need. Are they meeting our needs? Is there
something that could be done with the holiday season coming that we could do
differently to connect and take more meaning from it? Perhaps the reflecting
leads to realizing how fortunate we are to have the people and things in our
lives that we do. If we shift the way we “stock our shelves” for the holidays
it completely changes everything.

Begin Orthodontic
Check Ups by Age 7
A
beautiful smile can go a long way. Not only can it bring someone
a feeling of confidence, it can influence other people’s perception of
someone as well. According to Weston Orthodontist Dr. Maria Yazji,
studies show that 92% of Americans believe that a straight, white smile
indicates a person is healthy, smart and financially successful.
Dr. Yazji encourages parents to begin looking at their children’s
teeth at an early age. There are certain dental and bone disharmonies
that benefit most from early intervention. “Early consultations with an
orthodontist can determine if there is a developing problem with a child’s
teeth or bite,” Yazji said. “Many times we are able to intercept these
developing problems and keep them from getting worse and improve
skeletal jaw problems before they are firmly established.” Some issues
that may indicate a need for orthodontic attention are early or late loss of
baby teeth, thumb-sucking, and teeth or jaws that are too far forward or
back. If treatment is not needed at that time, the doctor could recommend
checking back every 6 months to monitor the teeth.
When early treatment is recommended, Dr. Yazji uses a Two-Phase
program. Phase One (early) treatment typically takes place during a
child’s younger active growth years (age 7-9 yrs). Interceptive treatment
plans are designed to guide and enhance a child’s own natural
growth to establish proper jaw size and correctly position the jaws in
relationship to each other. Following completion of Phase One, Dr. Yazji
will schedule periodic observation visits to monitor growth and dental
development. Phase Two of orthodontic treatment will be necessary later,
after the eruption of most or all of the permanent teeth (age 11-13 yrs)
to accomplish the final teeth and bite alignment and smile esthetics. The
major advantage of Two-Phase treatment is the opportunity to utilize the

orthodontist. By 12-14 years of age, most facial growth is complete,
placing limitations on what can be accomplished. “It is disappointing
to see a child at a later age that you know you could have helped more
had they been seen sooner,” said Dr. Yazji.
Having a crooked smile can also lead to children being teased
in school. If children smile less to hide their teeth, they can begin to
withdraw socially, a consequence that Dr. Yazji believes should not be
underestimated. Younger children are also not as self-conscious at an
early age to wear braces, than a teenager or high school student.
For this group, there is new technology available, such as Invisalign
Teen, which is the same concept of clear aligners that are virtually
undetectable as Invisalign, with features specially designed for
adolescents. There are also lingual braces that can be placed on the
back side of teeth, hiding them from view. “Nowadays there is no excuse
not to get the beautiful, healthy smile you’ve always wanted,” said Dr.
Yazji. “Correcting your smile is one investment that pays off long term,
and stays with you the rest of your life,” she added.
Orthodontists are dental specialists. They receive an additional two
to three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn
the proper way to align and straighten teeth. Dr. Maria Yazji has an
orthodontist office at 2751 Executive Park Drive #101 in Weston. She
has been in practice for 17 years and can be contacted at 954-2173737. She is in the top 1% of Invisalign and Incognito lingual braces
providers in North America.

The Magic of EMDR
H
ave you ever caught
yourself, in amazement, doing
something you know you’ll
regret later? Or getting drawn
to the wrong people; feeling
unattractive or incompetent
when you are not. Or yelling
at a loved one for little reason;
feeling powerless to shake a
depression or anxiety brought on by something that
seems inconsequential? Reactions that seem irrational are
often exactly that. But irrational reactions do not occur
without reasons. They originate from a part of our brain
that is not governed by the rational mind. While genetics
play an important role in the way we behave, in general,
much of our suffering comes from the way our memories
of past experiences are stored in our brain, and this can be
changed. The experiences we may have encountered range
from the usual childhood humiliations, failures, rejection and
arguments to major events such as accidents, physical, sexual
or emotional abuse, combat or natural disasters.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a
comprehensive form of psychotherapy with 8 phases and many
procedures and methods. Whether you have experienced
minor setbacks or major trauma, the therapist guides the
client by accessing past experiences that set the groundwork
for current problems. Then, together they process present
situations that cause the disturbances and incorporate new
education, skills and perspectives into the memory network,
that are necessary for future success. The person receiving
EMDR therapy not only addresses the obvious symptom of
a problem, but also ends up with a wide range of positive
changes that affect all areas of life. Changing the memories
that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we
view others. Therefore our relationships, job performance,
what we are able to do or handle all move in a positive
direction.
Ultimately, there are reasons for the reactions that we may
have viewed as “crazy” or uncontrollable, our unconscious
memory connections are the foundation or our problems,
and also our ability to find heath and satisfaction in life.
Regardless of how we were brought up, or how we feel, we
are not victims and our problems are not a sign of weakness
and even the longest negative patterns can be broken. As
responsible adults, with sufficient knowledge, we have the
power to take control of ourselves.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
ANGST VS. ENTHUSIASM

t is college application season and
most seniors are in a total state of panic.
Although the constant pressure was there over
the summer to tackle some of the essays, finish up the resume and determine
the final “where to apply” list, many seniors decided to wait until the pressure of
the application deadline was looming. The good news is this process doesn’t have
to be so onerous. In fact, I think this should be an exciting time for seniors and
their families and they should approach this process with enthusiasm. After all,
putting together a packet of information that summarizes the past 18 years of
your life only to determine the next four years may seem like an impossible task.
While we certainly can’t discount the fact that this may be the most important
milestone in a person’s life and a critical step towards building their future perhaps
the best place to start is by taking a deep breath and remembering there are
more than 4,000 colleges in the United States. There is no shortage of websites,
books and high school counselors to help start you on this journey. Create your
own checklist, and look at the schools that are the best fit academically, socially,
emotionally, geographically, and of course, economically. As I have said before,
there can be more than one “dream” school for everyone.
Once you complete the list, the deadlines become critical. Make sure you have
a clear understanding of the difference between Early Decision, Early Action,
Restricted Early Action, Rolling Admission, Early Admission and Deferral. In all
cases, early planning can only help your chances of feeling less stressed. While the
Florida schools have early deadlines, out of state applications should be completed
by November. At Cypress Bay High School, more than 50 colleges will be sending
admission officers to our campus to meet with interested students and inform
them about their school, admission criteria, and student life. College visits to
your school High School provide an incredible opportunity for students to meet
the person who may be reading their application! This personal connection could
be just what is needed to make that final decision about which schools are the
best fit and provide last minute tips about how to personalize the application. Be
sure to take advantage of them whenever you can.
The essays, letters of recommendation, transcripts, resumes, SAT/ACT
scores, application fee supplements for the Common Application and interviews
are also an important part of the application process. Tackling these pieces one
at a time, with authenticity and organization is critical. Following directions
in the application is something that some students overlook – paying close
attention to word count, and whether colleges want letters of recommendation
or not – are details that cannot be dismissed.
Most students are spending the majority of their time (and nervous energy)
on their essays. Whether it is the personal statement or 500-word essay, this
is the best way to personalize your application and show colleges what makes
you different from the 30,000 other applications they may be receiving. It is so
important that the essay is authentic and is reflective of who the applicant is and
more importantly, how they will impact their college community.
This is an exciting time and seniors should approach it with enthusiasm
and optimism.
esL Program At sagemont
sets students on
strong Academic Path
At The Sagemont School there is a small population of students who have just arrived
in the United States for the 1st time. These students may not have a strong grasp of English
and may need some special help in acclimating to their new life here in West Broward.
For this small group of non-English speakers, a teacher is dedicated to teaching English
as a second language (ESL) and is instrumental in helping these children make a positive
transition to academic learning and getting adjusted to the culture. ESL training is not
always available in schools due to budget cuts, but at Sagemont this role is considered
critical for helping to create productive and well-adjusted new comers.
In Sagemont’s ESL class, you will find a mix of talented students from all over the
world. It is the task of the ESL teacher to assess the student’s needs and present a mix of
academic English in addition to “casual English”. Students are tested several times during
the year to see if they can matriculate out of the program.
Michelle Arango, Sagemont’s ESL teacher for elementary grades explains, “The ESL
classroom is a safe-haven for many of my students. It is a place where they can learn and
practice the language without being conscientious about their mistakes. Aside from the
direct instruction of the English language, it is a place where they can express their feelings
and reflect on one another’s growth as an English speaker.” At the middle and high school
levels, ESL classes have a strong focus on elevated academic English which can take several
years to truly master. Sue Mallak, the 6-12th grade ESL teacher says, “The ESL class can
be a pivotal piece in a student’s successful adjustment to a new country and language.”
Sagemont’s alumni who started as ESL students have flourished and gone on to
great colleges and career
paths. ESL students at
The Sagemont School
have won school awards
in reading, spelling, and
composition. Beatriz
Mourad, Class of 2011,
entered the school with
very little exposure to
English. She flourished at
Sagemont and graduated
with honors. Beatriz went
on to become her class
Salutatorian and her goal is to become an international translator. Beatriz recalls, “I felt a
little scared by going into all English speaking classes but my teachers all helped me adjust
and my ESL class gave me a place to practice my English freely within a community of students
who were similar to me. I learned English quickly and began to really love my new school.”
Beatriz currently attends the University of Southern California with plans to double major in
East Asian Languages and Cultures and International Relations.
Sagemont is proud to be able to offer an array of special interest classes that include ESL,
Art, Chorus, Band, a wide variety of athletics and much more.

As the new principal of Eagle Point Elementary,
Christy de Zayas is looking forward to making a difference
in the lives of more than 1,100 students each year and
helping them accomplish their very best. “To say that
I am excited to be at Eagle Point Elementary is an
understatement,” said de Zayas. “Education is my passion.
I am committed to making sure that we continue to offer
high quality instruction, continuous improvement and
effective communication.”
De Zayas has known that she wanted to pursue a career
in education since she was a child. She was inspired by her
mother, who taught for more than 30 years. Her ultimate
goal has always been to become a principal. “I wanted to
go into administration, so I could impact as many children
as possible,” said de Zayas.
She has been an educator for the past 20 years. Before
becoming principal at Eagle Point, she spent 15 years as
a classroom teacher in both Dade and Broward Counties
and then became a math specialist. For the past three
years, she was Assistant Principal at Hawks Bluff
Elementary in Davie, where she received accolades for
her work. She wrote a proposal to start a dual language
immersion program, which will be offered at Hawks
Bluff this year. She also created a partnership with the
Broward Virtual School to enable 5th grade students to
take online middle school classes. Last year, the Florida
Association of School Administrators named her 2012
Assistant Principal of the Year.
De Zayas understands the importance of working
closely with parents. She has an open door policy
and says that she is always just a phone call or email
away. She worked with the PTA over the summer to
implement two new initiatives before the school year
even started. The Eagle’s Nest is a teacher-run program
that is sponsored by the PTA. It includes 20 after-school
clubs that are open to all grade levels, such as Spanish,
acting, chess, photography, sign language, mad science,
recycling, cooking, and many more. “We are trying to
offer something for everyone,’ said de Zayas.
She also worked with the PTA to make the school
wireless. “The students need immediate access to the
Internet,” said de Zayas. “There are so many wonderful
applications that are available to supplement the
curriculum and help the students with research.” De Zayas
says that the wireless system will also help the teachers stay
abreast of the most current research and initiatives. “I
want to make sure that the teachers have the information
they need to make good decisions, so they can continue to
provide high quality instruction.” The school has always
been a top performer on the FCAT’s, especially in math,
and she is determined to continue that trend.
De Zayas says that there are many students that live
within the Eagle Point Elementary boundary that have
chosen to attend other schools. “I hope that some of the
new programs will entice them to come back to Eagle
Point,” said de Zayas. “We would love to have them as
students.”
Eagle Point Elementary is located at 100 Indian Trace in
Weston. For information, visit eaglepoint.browardschools.

G
ood communication with your
teen about school issues can make
your job as a parent much easier.
However, if you and your teen seem to
have a disconnect, perhaps it’s time to
explore how you can communicate more
effectively about school and other things.
Here are several tips that will benefit your
relationship with your teen:
try not to make every conversation about school. School and
learning should be a top priority at home, but remember that grilling your
teen about homework, grades and studying at every opportunity is likely to
cause him or her to retreat. Every conversation does not have to result in a
lesson about the importance of school. Talk with your teen for the sake of
conversation. Express an interest in his or her life outside of school.
strive for more positive interactions than negative ones.
Avoid backhanded compliments or praise followed by criticism. For example,
when your teen completes his or her homework or chores without frequent
reminders, resist the urge to point out how he or she didn’t do so the night
before. Find kind and constructive ways to mention areas of improvement,
and be sure that a majority of your conversations with your teen are affable.
listen, listen, listen. Practice active listening without interrupting
or being too quick to interpret your teen’s thoughts and feelings. Doing
so will make your teen feel valued and respected and more likely to
open up about school or other issues. Try not to overload your teen
with advice; instead be a sounding board first. Make your teen feel
comfortable talking to you.
Recognize that your teen is growing up. Many teens feel resentful
when parents treat them like children, telling them what to do and how to do
it and trying to control their every move. Extend your teen trust, but be clear
that you expect him or her to earn that trust. Let him or her make decisions
when appropriate, and if mistakes are made, don’t rub his or her nose in
them. Instead, let your teen know that mistakes are to be learned from.
Respect your teen as you want to be respected. Treating
your teen with respect means never dismissing his or her opinions, even
if you don’t agree with them. It means talking to him or her in a way
that is polite and caring, not judgmental. Your teen is growing up and
changing, and though it may be tempting to pry into his or her life,
respect the fact that he or she needs privacy. Just as you want respect
from your teen, he or she wants and deserves your respect, too.
Your role as a parent is evolving, and at times it may be difficult
to know how to maintain good communication with your teen as he or
she moves toward independence and adulthood. Developing an open
relationship will take continued focus, but remember that the steps you
take to strengthen that bond today will give your teen the support he or
she needs and set the foundation for your future relationship.

ith the arrival of new playground equipment, recess at
Gator Run Elementary has taken on a whole new meaning. The
school won a $20,000 playground makeover in Dannon’s Danimals
Rally for Recess contest.
Parent Tracy Johnson spearheaded the effort to win the
makeover. It started last year, when Tracy visited her kindergartner,
Tyler, on the K-2 playground and was surprised by the lack of
equipment. “It was like a giant sandbox,” said Tracy. “The kids
were not having fun, because there was not much for them to do.”
Two weeks later, Tyler was eating a Dannon’s Danimals, when
he noticed the Rally for Recess contest described on the container.
He learned that the five schools that submitted the most product
codes from specially marked products would win a playground
makeover. They would also receive an $8,000 party to celebrate.
From that moment on, Tracy and Tyler were on a mission to win.
“It became like a full time job,” said Tracy.
Since Gator Run entered the contest several months after it began,
schools throughout the country had already started collecting. Tracy
quickly realized that it would not take long to earn points, if she could
convince all of the school’s nearly 1,200 kids to participate. She
created flyers, placed shoe boxes in classrooms, and presented her
idea at a PTA meeting. “I was so excited when several PTA members
agreed to help,” said Tracy. Some offered to assist with the collection,
while others donated stamps and envelopes.
The Rally for Recess committee met several times at parent
Shannon Martinez’s home to sort through the product codes.
When a California school seemed like it might win, the Gator
Run group stepped up its efforts. In less than two months, they
collected a total of 20,000 points, beating the California school by
only 600. When Dannon notified Principal Susan Sasse that the
school had won, she immediately announced it over the school
intercom. “You could hear the entire school clapping and hollering
with excitement,” said Sasse.
In May, all of the students participated in an Ultimate Recess Day
sponsored by Dannon. The back half of the campus was converted
into a Fun Zone with bounce houses, carnival games, inflatables slides,
sports games, and a DJ. Dannon also provided a yogurt snack for each
student that day. Dannon sent a film crew to cover the event and the
video is posted on its website at www.rallyforrecess.com.
The new playground was installed at the start of this school year.
The composite piece of equipment includes a double slide, single
slide, rock wall climber, and arch climber. There are also panels
with fun interactive activities, such as paddle ball and steering
wheels. Beneath the equipment, there is 800 square feet of a
poured-in-place rubber surface to replace the sand.
With additional funding from the PTA, the school also installed
several new independent pieces, including a drop shot in the
intermediate playground. The District replaced the worn rubber
surface tiles underneath the original composite piece on the
intermediate playground with a poured-in-place surface.
“This project was another example of how one person can make
a difference,” said Sasse. “A Kindergarten parent had a suggestion,
we supported it, and the entire community rallied around us. Even
the City of Weston encouraged its residents to send their Dannon
codes in for our school.” Gator Run is planning a communitywide
party to unveil its new playground.
Dannon is hosting the contest again this school year. For

hen is the last time you checked on your relationship?
Through troubling times, the strength of a relationship is often
tested. This can take many forms, with one of the biggest
coming in the form of neglect. Prioritizing a relationship often
falls by the wayside as stress increases. When a relationship is
neglected, emotional distress, arguments, and estrangement
can occur. If neglected, these “weeds” can grow to strangle the
healthy roots of any relationship. However, a little bit of daily
weeding and tilling in your relationship’s “garden” can go a long
way towards rebuilding it, as well as fertilizing its soil for future
growth. As with the Tortoise and The Hare, “slow and steady”
work is the key to winning this race also. Below are some of the
seeds, some of the weeds, and some of the needs in the garden
of a healthy relationship.

RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS: The responsibility
for addressing and resolving problems in a relationship
is 50/50, whatever the problem. Solving problems
together IS a key way to strengthen relationships.
Have each other’s back, it feels good.
Increase positive, healthy communication patterns
with your partner. One easy way is to try focusing on
what your partner does RIGHT, not wrong.
Communicate your needs and wants to your partner in
a simple, straight-forward manner. Focus on meeting
their needs = they focus on meeting yours. This can
build bridges of trust and intimacy.
Address conflicts immediately and work swiftly to
resolve them. This keeps resentments current, and
eases whisking them away. If not, resentments fester
that hinder love and affection.
Become allies, not enemies. Commit to
UNDERSTANDING your partner’s point of view,
not defending your own. Work to nurture and raise
up your relationship, the same way you would a child.
Be nice. Your partner is not a scratching post for your
sharp claws. Trim your own nails. As such, do the same
for your own emotional health, instead of blaming
your partner for your own feelings. This is the key to
a positive mental attitude and personal empowerment.
• Take notes on your partner’s complaints about you.
Then, change these negative stereotypes by responding
differently. This can perk their ears and promote
positive, healthy change.
• Support and nurture each other’s individuality. There
is no need for conformity in thought and action in a
relationship. This can make it go stale.
• Pick your partner up when they are struggling. Do not
bring them down more.
• Be more emotionally vulnerable with your partner.
Create a “safe” environment for you partner to do so
as well.
• Comfort your partner instead of trying to problemsolve their pain away. This IS often the solution.
• Talk and act more intimately. Build emotional
intimacy first, the rest will follow.
• Avoid the “I’m right, you’re wrong” blame game…
even if you ARE correct. This pattern does nothing
but plant the seeds of resentment and unhealthy
competition in relationships.
• Communicate your intentions, needs, and wants
clearly and simply to your partner. This can be very
hard when emotions are high, but if you make a
mistake, remember that RECOVERY IS ALWAYS
POSSIBLE. Just try again until you get it right. The
longer you wait to resolve the mistake, the deeper the
roots grow.
• Prioritize your relationship and your partner by “staying
in the present” with them more often. This is a big
component that promotes the “FUN” in a relationship.
Don’t allow things to distract you from exercising a
healthy relationship or it will become weak.
