CAVENDISH NEWS THE CAVENDISH SCHOOL 31 INVERNESS STREET LONDON NW1 7HB TEL: 020 7485 1958 THE CAVENDISH NEWS Friday 1st May Issue 2 SPRING TERM 2015 From the Headmistress Dear Parents, We welcome Mr Paul Miller, a new student teacher from the Institute of Education who will be working primarily with Year 2 until the end of the year. The school car park was closed at the beginning of the week as Year 6 pupils were taking a Cycle Training course and later in the week they went out on the roads. The class was divided into two groups and rotated between their cycling and Touch Typing. On Tuesday, representatives from the Hope Foundation (a charity supported by the FOC for several years) came to talk to pupils in assembly about their work with street children and their families in Calcutta. They thanked everyone for the support we had provided. The Eco-Committee has been planning this term’s Eco-Week which will take place the week commencing 11th May. Yesterday Year 1 visited the Florence Nightingale Museum and Year 5 took part in a tennis afternoon at Queenswood School. Year 4 enjoyed a talk about ‘advertising’ from Mr Cooper this morning. Very many thanks to him for such an informative talk which fitted in so well with their current English topics. Have a wonderful bank holiday weekend! Cavendish Lunchtime Library: Volunteers Needed! At the Lunchtime Library parents volunteer their time so that the school library is open for pupils in Years 1 to 6 during their lunch breaks. We have a small, dedicated band of parent librarians and we need more! The library is a great way to get involved in The Cavendish if you are interested in books, reading, and children's books. Our parents supervise the session, helping pupils with their book choices and circulating books using the library software system. They can read, browse the shelves, play puzzles and chess. The library is very popular at The Cavendish and encourages reading and contact with books in a fun and relaxed way. Parents can sign up for a lunchtime library session once a week, once a month, once a term, or once a year. If you are interested in volunteering, please do contact me at mh377@columbia.edu or 0787 656 2071. Miriam Hill (Iris, Year 4) FOC Parent Library Coordinator Year 1 to Florence Nightingale Museum Earthquake Appeal NEPAL EARTHQUAKE APPEAL We started a collection at school on Monday 27 April and by Wednesday morning there was already over £140 in the collection box. We are still at £140 on Thursday lunchtime. Whilst it is very likely that many of us have already given to the major appeals, the Cavendish School has a personal contact, through Mrs Dunbar, with an organisation in Nepal ‘Classrooms in the Clouds’ – which is a registered NGO working in the Everest region of Nepal in the remote villages of the Solu Khumbu region, building classrooms and sponsoring teachers. This is where we would like to send our collection. We will be able to keep track of how the money is spent and keep you updated. There are currently over 170 families at the Cavendish School – could we manage to raise more over the next week or so? COME ON CAVENDISH! Let’s raise £500 for Classrooms in the Clouds! You can find out all about their work on http:// classroomsintheclouds.org/ Year 4 Advertising workshop Brian Cooper, the father of Daisy in Y4 and Hannah in Y2, ran an Advertising Workshop for the Year 4 girls today as part of their learning about the skill of persuasive writing in advertisements. They learned about how advertising agencies work, were given a brief, produced a poster illustrating their creative idea and then presented their concepts promoting Landrover. They learned an enormous amount and worked really well in their groups; producing some really impressive advertising concepts. Library DO YOU WANT TO DONATE A BIRTHDAY BOOK TO THE CAVENDISH LIBRARY? If you would like to donate a Birthday Book to the Cavendish Library we have a wish list on Amazon: www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/3EXXY9WNRIVL7 You can purchase directly from the wish list and the book (s) will be sent to school. If you would prefer to buy a book listed on the wish list, but use an independent bookseller, that is fine, but please let the school know so that we can remove it from the wish list. Alternatively, you may have an idea of your own. If this is the case, please just check with Louise Walters beforehand, to avoid duplications and then purchase the book directly. Hand the book in to the office, with an enclosed note saying who it is from and their class and birthdate, and it will get to the library! Birthday books are then accessed into our catalogue with book plates including the donor’s name and birthdate. Many thanks for thinking of us! BIRTHDAY BOOKS! The children seemed very interested and asked lots of questions. The Hope Foundation helps 7,500 street children a year and 70,000 homeless adults as well. The FOC presented them with a cheque for £1701.29 which they were delighted with. They said that the money will fund education for 7 children and will be sending names and profiles of the children so helped. These will be put up around the school to make a link for Cavendish children and parents with where the money is actually going. The money has come from the Christmas card fundraiser, easyfundraising, the BBQ, Tuck Shop, 2nd hand uniform amongst other fundraisers. Many thanks for your generosity. COMPOSER OF THE WEEK George Gershwin (1898-1937) An American composer and pianist. His parents were Russian Jews. He started studying piano sometime after 10 years of age. His parents had bought a piano for his older brother Ira, but George ended up playing it - to his parents' surprise and Ira's relief! Gershwin left school at age 15, and started earning wages as a piano player/songwriter. He worked for a few different companies, composing songs, recording and arranging them. He wrote several Broadway shows, musical comedies, many songs, one opera and music for classical orchestra. He also wrote a lot of music for movies. The lyrics for most of his works were written by his brother (Ira Gershwin). George Gershwin was special in the fact that he composed both "classical" and popular music. Most of us know some of Gerswin's tunes, because they have been used so much in movies, in TV and recorded so many times. Gershwin died young, at the age of 39 years.
