Scarboro Surf Club Edition 441 17 March 2016 Articles Presidents Report Juniors States After Party Comps What is coming up? Good luck to all Seniors this weekend at State Championships! We have our Seniors after party this Sunday night from 5pm. Annual Dinner is on 7 May 2016. Patrols Annual Dinner Lifesaving Calendar Tickets will be on sale shortly! Have a wonderful week Scarboro SLSC Members! From the President New clubrooms We’ve made some progress over the last few weeks with the City of Stirling and the MRA agreeing on a funding package freeing up $57 million for the beach front development project. At the same time Scarboro and the City have discussed the latest concept drawings and come to an in principle agreement on the layout of the new surf club facility. We’re waiting on the next iteration of the drawings which will hopefully firm up on the layout and answer some of the questions around how the concept can be translated into reality. Junior States Great effort by our juniors to finish a close third behind Fremantle with all clubs a fair distance from winners Trigg. Good surf conditions made for spectacular racing in the water while patience was tested with a very late finish to beach events on Saturday. Juniors are a growing part of our club and the efforts of coaches and age group managers should be applauded. In particular we need to acknowledge long time Junior Director Mic Nielsen. Mic is stepping down, but not away next season and I’m sure he’ll be around the club helping out but also spending a bit more time in the surf somewhere around the world. Senior States Good luck to all our competitors. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we’ll be having very exciting conditions and the drop down to the water on the edge is going to cause all sorts of problems. Remember we have the major task of clean up on Sunday afternoon so the more helpers the better. IRB Tomo’s usually sunny disposition will be tested tomorrow laying the cans for the weekend. If we could give an award above Life Membership for services to the club then Tomo would be close to the first recipient. Not only does he hop in the IRB when required but like our other jet ski riders does unheralded duty at every carnival. Let’s give him Legend Membership. Afters Party This Sunday at the club with beer thanks to Deb who variously argued, discussed and cajoled the liquor people to give us a license. Thanks to Mark Irwin we had an offer from Ultimo catering to run the whole event using their license and while we’re now able to do the bar ourselves we decided that catering the food was a good idea for what will be our last States Afters in these clubrooms. If any of our older competition legends now down with the juniors are still able to go out at nights it would be great to see them there as well. They’ll be some raffles so bring enough money to splash around. Hopefully the gold table will get a work out. From the President Ski Paddling Hotness The oeuvre of popular vocal artist, the ageing Mr Rodney Stewart contains such sing-a-long melodies as “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and a homage to sunburn titled “Hot Legs”. These ditties could have been written for ski coach Scott ‘Buns’ Wright who has long felt the febrile gaze of the fairer sex as he sashays along the beach. While Scott would prefer women to respect him for his formidable intellect, after giving the body a good going over first of course a fellow ski paddler who shall remain nameless but once rowed surf boats hasn’t a problem with being objectified and intends to embark on a reality (?) television career. I think it’s something to do with matrimony and as this person is already very popular on tinder, the young person’s site for finding pen pals I imagine he’ll be a hit. Form an orderly queue please ladies. Education Officials course for this Saturday 19 March has been cancelled due to lack of interest. LAST CHANCE TO GET YOUR SRC THIS SEASON. Did you miss out on the Adult SRC course last time and want to get the award in the warmer/flatter water? The adult SRC course will give you the skills to provide more qualified water safety for your kids on our own beach, and be a very important addition to our water safety roster at junior carnivals so that we can share the load. If we have enough parents, you will only need to volunteer for 1 junior carnival per year - and come on - you were going to be there anyway watching your kids....why not jump in and cheer them on. You get to wear a fabulous colour - fluoro orange - and can give gentle parental encouragement as your nipper cruises past. The course comprises first aid skills, CPR, DRSABCD, signals, rescues, and basic life saving skills. The course requires you to complete online learning first, then attend 8am-4pm on Saturday and be assessed Sunday for an hour and a half. If we have a minimum of 10 parents interested I will run the course 2 and 3 April in readiness for nipper season 2016-17. Let Bel know if you are interested belindakuster@bigpond.com Board Paddlers Senior Boards – Morning Fitness Training Morning fitness training continues after WA State SLSC Championships for all those interested on Monday and Wednesday mornings between 6:00 am and 6:50 am (subject to the available light). It is Highly Desirable that Hi Viz vests, rashies or singlets are worn during water-based training. Damaged Craft Damaged racing malibus and rescue boards continue to be taken onto the beach and into the water, especially on Sundays. Damaged craft MUST NOT be taken into the water because waterlogged craft cannot be repaired. It is the responsibility of the person taking the board from the shed to check for damage. If you find that a damaged board please leave it in the shed and select another craft. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated. Juniors Great effort by all who competed at the Junior State titles at Trigg beach over both days on the weekend, with a very trying day on the Saturday with a nice sized wave running in the morning, sorting out a few competitors, a huge rip in the U10s arena, and some long delays in the beach arena’s, which didn’t start until the water arena’s finished, with some people not getting off the beach until approx. 6.30pm, which made it a long day for our young competitors, and then having to back it up Sunday again. Slightly smaller wave size on Sunday, and off the beach by approx. 2.00pm. Great spread of medal across all age groups and good to see U10s & U11s getting a few, being their first introduction to a state titles, and the golden table at the junior afters on Sunday night, also good to see a great turn out here, in support of our medallist and club champs. Final results Trigg - 799.5pts nd 2 Fremantle – 335.5pts 3rd Scarboro – 332.5pts 4th Mullaloo – 328pts 5th Sorrento – 322pt 6th City of Perth – 203pts 1st So a great result from all, and we hold onto 3rd spot, as you can see very tight positioning, form 2nd down to 5th, so going to have keep momentum moving forward to stay in front of the pack below us, a fair amount of these points where picked up in the Pool rescue competition, so we need to keep promoting this amongst our junior as an out of surf season alternative to keep our skill ups Just want to give a big thanks to all the age managers and coaches who put in a huge effort throughout the season, and all parents who help out with water safety and officiating, with these guys our kids would not get the opportunity to compete on the big stage like they have. Award certificates for all, should be out in a couple of weeks and will advise when these are ready for pickup, from the office. 20/3/2016 - 8.00am – 9.00am – Board return for all allocated boards at the junior store room.
