FEBRUARY 2014 iBytenews GIVING YOU THE LATEST INFORMATION ON BLENDED LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY RICH TEACHING AND LEARNING IN THE FACULTY This is the first iByte newsletter. The newsletter was created as a quick update for lecturers and administration staff about what is happening in the faculty of Economic and Management Sciences with regards to blended learning. iByte-session: Using Clickers in your class Clickers are an audience response system incorporated into Moodle. Lecturers post a question in class and students then use their handheld device to answer the question. The results can instantly be displayed on the projector. Clickers allow students to respond and interact with the lecturer and each other using their cellphones or tablets. It is especially useful in enhancing engagement in large classes. Using clickers is not only beneficial to students, but also give the lecturer an opportunity to see what students understand of the work and what areas need to be focused on for further learning. Clickers can be used for taking attendance. There are the usual problems of students bypassing the system, but so far it has proven very successful. The iByte session of 7 March will focus on the use of clickers in the classroom. Marinda van Rooyen will share her expertise. Please contact Magda Barnard before Tuesday, 4 March, if you would like to join us for the iByte session. iByte, 7 March 2014, 12:45-13:45, Schumann Room 715 (Something to eat will be provided) Qurio: Previous iByte-session During the iByte session of 7 February 2014, we had Paul Kim from Qurio talk to us. Qurio is a user-friendly, online software package used for quizzes, homework testing and as a classroom clicker. It is currently free for use for university personnel until end June. Lecturers who have used Qurio had very positive experiences. The only problem with Qurio is that students don’t always want to use their data to answer questions online. For more information regarding Qurio please visit their website on www.qurio.co.za or contact Paul Kim on paul@edgecampus.co.za. Creating announcements in Moodle Development Opportunities When you want to get a small piece of information to students fast! It is sometimes necessary to send a quick announcement to students. It can be a reminder to bring their text books to class or a notice that the lecture venue have moved. Either way, it important to know that the announcement will reach the students in due time. Creating announcements in Moodle is can be done in two ways. The first manner in which an announcement can be created is with the use of the News Forum function. When posting something in the news forum, ensure that the “send e-mail” box is ticked. All students will receive an e-mail with the latest announcement. Announcements will also be available online for students continuously checking Moodle online. The second manner, is using the Label function. Here students will not receive an e-mail when the announcement is posted, but it will be very visible as soon as the student opens Moodle. When creating the label select the option for more editing tools. Here, make sure that your text is a striking colour and big font for students to see it immediately. Depending on the function of the notice, both the News Forum and the Label functions are very useful. Be sure to contact Magda Barnard, the SUNLearn advisor for the faculty of Economic and Management Sciences if you have trouble with creating announcements on Moodle. There are various development opportunities available. These include Auxins, Blended Learning short courses and CHEC workshops. Please see the faculty homepage for the latest dates and information. www.sun.ac.za/ems Next iByte session: 7 March 2014 12:45-13:45 Schumann, Room 715 How to: Use clickers Steps in creating a clicker Turn editing on Add an activity or resource Select Clicker Enter the name and description for the exercise Under the timing tab adjust the availability of the clicker.
