“I just wanted to share this picture of the journal part of the
journal-formatted dissertation coming to fruition postgraduation. You know you have the best faculty of any university
when they continue to mentor their graduates 2 years after graduation. Drs. Wickstrom and Patterson were some of your faculty
pioneers into the journal-formatted dissertation venture in 2011.
I cannot be more grateful for their continuous support. Even
now, they continue to support my research endeavors at TWU.”

HIGHLAND PARK ISD SUSPENDS SEVEN BOOKS AFTER PARENTS
PROTEST THEIR CONTENT—CAROL WICKSTROM (FACULTY) IS QUOTED
IN THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS
Highland Park ISD suspended seven books from classroom use until they are reviewed by a committee of parents, teachers and students. Following are the books that raised objections from some
parents. At a glance the 7 suspended books: The Art of Racing in the Rain, The Working Poor:
Invisible in America, Siddhartha, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, An
Abundance of Katherines, The Glass Castle: A Memoir & Song of Solomon.
“School districts and teachers walk a tightrope: They must respect the choice of parents who request other reading materials and protect other students’ rights to read them.
“It isn’t easy,” she said. “You have the parents who don’t want their child reading X-Y-Z and you have the parents saying ‘That’s wonderful. I didn’t
want to have that hard conversation.’ So teachers are put into difficult situations, and they have to make difficult decisions.”
In high school especially, she said, the English class curriculum goes beyond teaching literary elements.
Everything that happens in the classroom should be directed to students learning how to live an effective life, a life that has meaning, a life that gives back
to the country or community,” she said. “It’s about developing citizens for our world. You have to be able to think on many levels.”
