GREETINGS!
As I look back
over the past year
as President I see
so many positive
changes. In spite
of challenges...as
members of
ANBLPN we have
stood together, united and an important voice
& collaborative force in NB health care. Going into our 50th year I know that because we
have worked together, we are where we are
today – and that is something to be proud of!
As president I had the opportunity to
attend Oulton College's first PN pinning ceremony. It was such an honor to be part of this
event. Oulton College is the first private college in New Brunswick to offer the PN
Course, and it has taken a lot of work.
Changes like this are very exciting,
but not all changes are. Change is inevitable,
especially in health care and over their career
these new LPNs who have just graduated will
participate in all sorts of lifelong learning.
Professionalism and education go hand in
hand, and I wish all of our new grads a long
and fulfilling career.
For as long as I can remember LPN's
in New Brunswick have commented that we
are not at full scope of practice . For many
LPNs this is an exciting place to be and naturally working at full/greater scope leads to
plenty of reflection. It is healthy and natural
to have conversations comparing the policy
and practice in each health care facility and
how their interpretations allow LPNs to practice.
LPNs are professionals and in NB we
are held to a very high standard in the interest
of patients and clients. An important aspect
of my understanding was to realize the difference between our professional Association
– ANBLPN and the unions in different facilities in NB. Unfortunately wages are not our
mandate, but I assure you that we work very
hard to implement full scope of practice and
collaborate with the CUPE unions who do
have the mandate to ask for better wages for
LPNs.
Just around the corner in 2015 we will
all celebrate the ANBLPN 50th Anniversary.
I invite every LPN to start making plans now
to attend the celebration and education sessions for May 2015.
In closing I send all members BEST
WISHES in 2015. I look forward to seeing as
many of you that are able to attend at the
AGM in May to celebrate our 50th Anniversary. “We’ve come a
long way!”

Registration
In July/August 2014 a
request was sent out for all
LPNs to provide us with their
User Names to go with their Service New Brunswick, Horizon, or
Vitalité accounts. The office staff has been very busy collecting this new piece of information for registration this year, and about 2300 out of 3400 LPNs have provided
their user names.
Thank-you all for your help with this important new step. Lots of people have
asked why we needed to do this.
Well, it provides greater security, more payment options that LPNs asked for, and
greater data capacity. The good news is that the rest of the process should run smoothly - and online like last year. If you have not made your account with Service New
Brunswick yet, you will need to do that before you can register for 2015.
Some people are timid of using the computer or don’t have access to
computer or e-mail. If this is you,
please call and we will help you.

Executive Director Up-date
This past year has certainly been a busy, but very productive
year. The highlights include:
-NBLPN’s new legislation Act & Revision of By-Laws
-New Mission & Vision, and Policies
-Mandatory education upgrades
-Board Education
-Oulton College graduated their first practical nurse class
-PN-BN Bridging program accepted their second co-hort of students
-Program gap analysis completed for paramedics who wish to continue their studies to be a PN
-ANBLPN welcomed 214 new members who were successful with
the Canadian Practical Nurse Exam
-National Nurse Assessment Service went live in August 2014 to support internationally educated nurses
-Website upgrades to accommodate NNAS & SNB
-Welcoming of new staff
-AGM success in Saint John-May 2014 with preparations for 50th Anniversary in 2015
-Hosted Canadian Council of Practical Nurse Regulator’s AGM in New Brunswick
-Continuing our journey to move the LPN profession to full scope of practice
ANBLPN continues to undertake new initiatives such as the new registration process by
continuing to implement these changes and make our operations more efficient. We will be able
to provide more up to date services while maintaining fees at the same level.
Again I ask for your patience since this is a very busy time of year when over 3800
members are trying to register. Our staff is very helpful and courteous and we are trying to
make this change as smoothly as possible by collaborating and working with Service New
Brunswick. Next year will be better!!
Change is not easy…as a profession we will continue to face challenges that we will
overcome together through excellence in service delivery and a professional and ethical membership. Every day you are making a difference….Remember you are an essential part of the
health care team and I thank you for all you do.
I wish you all a happy holiday season and a new year full of happiness and prosperity.

ANBLPN Awards LPN Bursary- Scholarships are for You!
There are three different types of scholarships/bursaries given out every year, and
sometimes there are very few people who apply. Please go to the Association website, and
under the Education Tab. You will find a drop down list that says: Award - LPN BursaryScholarship. It describes each award.
Application letters and appropriate endorsements can be forwarded to the ANBLPN
office and they will be considered for 2014 and 2015awards. The next ones coming up are for
LPNs studying and working at the same time and that deadline is December 15, 2014, and it
will be given out on December 31st, 2014. Please refer to the website or contact the Association office at your convenience. Don’t put off this great opportunity. Times goes by quickly!


What is the mission of ANBLPN for the next 50 years?
As the Board began preparations for the 50th Anniversary of the
Association, an important part of the plan was to define the direction of
ANBLPN for the next 50 years. Here are the starting points.
Mission:
The Association of New Brunswick Licensed Practical Nurses ensures the public of their commitment to
safe, competent, and compassionate ethical care by regulating and enhancing the profession of practical
nursing.
Vision:
Licensed Practical Nurses are an integral member of collaborative health care, respected for their skills
and expertise, compassion, and unwavering ethical standards.
Core Values:
Respect
Creating and nurturing a culture of equity inclusiveness and diversity within our organization, with membership and with our external stakeholders
Integrity
Being honest, fair, consistent, reliable and objective in our actions, decisions and relationships
Collaboration
Engaging licensed practical nurses and other stakeholders in a cooperative spirit to build and maintain
strong professional and public relationships that support the safety and best interests of the public
Quality
Promoting excellence through integration of emerging public policy and the consistent application of
professional nursing regulation
Professionalism
Practical nursing care while developing and maintaining a therapeutic nurse-client relationship. Continuous skills development, ethics and oversight by a professional regulatory body provide direction for practical nurses to uphold the highest standard of care as defined by their scope of practice. The practical
nurse maintains integrity and is accountable to the public, the client, their profession, colleagues and
one’s self.

Medication Administration
ANBLPN has trained over 350 members in the full medication administration course across the province this year. This has been funded through our
Education Trust Fund and we will continue to offer courses this year to accommodate those that require the full education to register for 2015. A new
guideline has been published and posted on our website to assist you in identifying if you are required to take this mandatory education and what is required to stay current in your practice of medication administration as a LPN
in New Brunswick.
Members who have their name on our Medication Administration Refresher list will not be receiving a course date until the New Year as our priority has been those requiring education in
order to register.
Competency Profile
The New Brunswick LPN Competency Profile has been updated this year and is
accessible to all members on our website under ‘downloads’. Please take time to
look at this document, as it outlines your Provincial scope as a LPN and can be
used to advocate for an increases scope within your workplace. The Association
has been working diligently to place this updated document in the hands of decision makers in the major employers of this province to support an optimised scope
for LPNs in our province to move forward in their scope in all areas of practice.

We are please to introduce you to our new Practice
Consultant, Christie Ruff, LPN. Christie has been a
Licensed Practical Nurse since 1989. Her experience through the years has been vast: CCU Step
Down, Internal Medicine, Phlebotomy & ECG
Technician, Long Term Care, and Instructor for the
New Brunswick Community College Practical
Nursing Program
She is a true advocate for the Practical Nursing profession. Her passion for professionalism and strong
work ethic has earned her numerous awards throughout her career and most recently was presented with a Professionalism Award for Horizon Health.
What is most exciting to her right now is seeing her profession moving forward and practicing
towards their full scope and capability.
“Being a LPN is something I am proud of, I love bedside care… I love helping others
reach their potential in this profession. You are NEVER ‘just a LPN’. You ARE a LPN; a
Licensed Practical Nurse. You are an integral part of the health care team: your role is
valued and important. LPN Pride.”
Christie’s role within ANBLPN will be a resource to our members for practice
related questions as well she will play an integral role in the optimization of the LPN scope in
the Province by acting as a liaison between ANBLPN and the major

Kelly Lagacy graduated from Fredericton High School
and started her LPN Program at NBCC Woodstock in September 2014. She hopes to graduate in 2016. Along with
becoming a practical nurse who is “ready for anything”, she
is also considering going on to the RN bridging program and
eventually Nurse Practitioner.

Audrey Galbraith Award 2014 Recipient:
Rachel LeClair, LPN - Campbellton Nursing Home
Rachel LeClair, the 2014 Recipient of the Audrey Galbraith
Award for Excellence in Practice, has been a LPN since 1995.
She was a resident attendant
for ten years before taking the practical
nurse course. Rachel is known as a
constant advocate for patients and encourages them to develop to the full
potential and explore new possibilities.
She also motivates her fellow
workers to focus on abilities rather than
disabilities.
Rachel was nominated by Ken
Murray and Barbara Foley from the Campbellton
Nursing Home. All of the staff and residents
congratulate her on this honour.
Rachel LeClair and her sister, Therese LeClair travelled from
Campbellton to Saint John.
Also nominated for the Audrey Galbraith Award in 2014: Joann Samson: Moncton City
Hospital; Dany Picard: Hôpital regional d’Edmundston; Robert Maltby: Miramichi Regional

Meet the ANBLPN Office Crew
Carol Kennard Clark
Carol is a graduate of Nackawic High School and Atlantic Business
College-Fredericton and has served as the office manager for ANBLPN
for 27 years. She is responsible for overseeing the day to day operations of the ANBLPN office, serving the needs of the LPNs, the Board,
Executive Director, and the accounting and records management systems. She receives and processes all registrations and transfers to and
from NB under the supervision of the Registrar, along with maintaining
essential IT systems. Soon to retire, Carol is looking forward to spending her time doing the projects she has always wanted to pursue like
quilting and running a marathon. Carol and her husband live in Fredericton. She has two
grown children, a son and a daughter and three grandchildren. When not working she enjoys
gardening, going for drives in the country with her husband to festivals and events, and spending time with her grandson Tyler who lives close by.
Charlene Boudreau
Charline is a graduate of Louis J. Robichaud High School in Shediac,
and has served as secretary and Registrar assistant for 13 years. She
is responsible for organizing all practical nurse students who write the
national exam, and helping to arrange all discipline activities for the
Registrar as well as facilitating registrations and transfers. Charline
also works closely with the professional competencies, professional
development policy and implementation, and supports the Registrar
with everything from College visits to preparations for the 50th Anniversary Celebration for ANBLPN. Charline and her husband live in
Harvey and she is fluently bilingual and happy to help LPNs achieve
their potential. She has two grown children, her son who lives in NB
and her daughter who is currently working on her PHD in the Yukon. When not working she
enjoys gardening, pickling, travelling, and spending time with her family in Moncton
Angela Scott
Angela is a graduate of Woodstock High School, NBCC-Woodstock,
and UNB and is new to ANBLPN since May 2014. She works with the
policy manual, the Internationally Educated Nurses Program, and has
been supporting the LPNs with their user names in preparation for 2015
registration. Angela is functionally bilingual and has over 20 years’
experience in business, adult education, and interior decorating. She
and her husband live on the family farm in Debec, NB with their cats,
dogs, and beef cattle. When not working she enjoys her community
work as President of the New Brunswick Women’s Institute, reading,
and working towards her Master’s Degree in adult education.
