Dear Members,
Kids are out of school, vacation plans are set and buying a
home and or a new car are high on the shopping list. The
aroma of backyard BBQ is in the air and fireworks light up
the sky. All of a sudden, the weekend traffic seems busier
than the weekdays. Yes! It’s summer time! Whether it’s
munching a hot dog at the ball park or just lying on the
beach with a cold beverage, we all eagerly await this time
of the year.
As excited as we are for summer, let’s not forget to mention
what a fabulous spring we had. In the past quarter our
credit union has increased its membership by adding 1,119
new members -- ranging in age from 18 to 80. They all are
now eligible to enjoy the excellent benefits offered by the
credit union, including great promotional rates on all our
loan products.
Our promotion for new and refinanced auto loans was a
runaway success. So much so, that we had to extend it an
extra month in July. Not only did we help 300 plus members
(and counting) in reducing their payments and saving them
money, but also hundreds of those members benefited from
having their first loan payment made by the credit union as
well as all the other goodies that came with it. Our newly
launched Credit Builder Loan has also been received very
well, helping members in reestablishing or building a new
credit profile.
The Credit Union sponsored its first Reality Fair for kids at
Mary E. Volz middle school in Runnemede, NJ. We plan to
have many more such events in the coming months. It is a
great way of teaching our youth about money management.
We also hosted credit score seminars for members at the
Mullica Hill and Deptford libraries.
As always, we continue to be very involved in our giving
back to the community. Most of you have noticed your
credit union employees at events all over the Southern NJ
region. Moorestown Day, Clayton Day, San Juan Bautista
Parade in Camden, Annual Tri-State Conference, etc. are
just a few to name. Our ongoing employee participation
for charitable causes extended to the Crohn’s & Colitis
foundation this past quarter. The following pages will
give a detailed look at your credit union’s community and
charitable journey through the last quarter.
What can members look out for in the next quarter? Even
though I have been told not to give out all the stellar
surprises in store for the next quarter, I am willing to share
a little secret on strict grounds that we all will keep it to
ourselves. Ssshhh!! - Your credit union will be launching
an extensive mortgage products promotion. For the first
time members will be able to apply for a Home Equity
Line of Credit as well as multi-term fixed and variable rate
products. Enough said – Just stay tuned or don’t blame me
for missing out.
Finally some housekeeping – Don’t forget to take advantage
of our yearly Skip A Pay program for all those who have yet
to use it.
Let’s all have a safe and fun summer. Don’t be shy of sharing
some of those fun stories with us.

Donation to Support Ovarian Cancer Care
Camden, NJ – (April 19, 2016) – South Jersey Federal Credit
Union employees presented a check in the amount of $2,200
to representatives from the Cooper Foundation on behalf of the
SJFCU employees’ “Charitable Journey” program. Employees
raised $1,100, which was generously matched by the Credit
Union, bringing the total donation to $2,200. The monies
donated will assist the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper
in providing care to patients undergoing treatment for ovarian
cancer.

SJFCU’s Continuing Support of San Juan Bautista
SJFCU has been a long-time supporter of Parada San Juan Bautista’s
scholarship program, which annually awards scholarships to Camden
students of Puerto Rican heritage. This is SJFCU’s 9th year of a tenyear commitment to fund the scholarship.

A Dose of Reality for Eighth Graders
South Jersey Federal Credit Union partnered with the New Jersey
Credit Union League to bring a Financial Reality Fair to the
8th grade students of Mary E. Volz school in Runnemede.
The Reality Fair was a unique opportunity for students to
experience financial challenges they may face when they
start life on their own. Students identified their career
choice and starting salaries, then completed a budget
sheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary
while paying for basics such as housing, utilities,
transportation, clothing, and food. As they
went through the Fair, students stopped by
tables to find a place to live, decide on
transportation options, buy a cell phone
plan, utilities, insurance, groceries,
personal needs, fun activities and
savings. Along the way there were many
temptations for additional spending, and
students learned to balance their wants
and needs to stay within their income. After
the students visited the various stations,
students balanced their budget and sat down
with a financial counsellor for review.
SJFCU Helps Gloucester County Kids Have Fun This
Summer
South Jersey Federal Credit Union presented a check in the amount of
$1,000 to representatives from the Gloucester County Parks and Recreation
Department for sponsorship of the Children’s Summer Rec Program, which
offers a number of programs during the summer for children at various
locations throughout Gloucester County.

• HARRY CASSEL •
e at South Jersey Federal Credit Union
are very proud of our 76 year history
of serving members and turning their relationships
into timeless memories. Every now and then there is
a memory that is meant to be shared with all. Today
we are sharing once such memorable journey spanning
over six decades – The Cassel family.
It was the 50’s and the greater Camden area
was booming with industry. SJFCU was
already two decades into serving members
when Mr. Harry Cassel Sr., a longshoreman,
joined the credit union. For the next twenty
odd years he conducted his basic financial
needs with the credit union.
Fast-forward to 1977– On a bright
sunny afternoon on the 5th of July, Harry
Cassel, Sr. walked into the Camden
branch with his son, Harry Cassel Jr.,
who was following his dad’s footsteps as
longshoreman.
Harry,
Jr. had come to SJFCU
to become a member and
apply for his very first car
loan to buy a ’77 Cadillac.
“I remember gas was 65
cents it took me a whole
$13 to fill my car up”,
commented Harry Jr. ,
Helping Harry, Jr. that day
was Miss Veronica Mazza, a young lady who had just
graduated high school and was at her very first job.
Over the next four decades, Veronica got married,
became Veronica Cowley and had three beautiful
children. Harry, Jr’s five beautiful children grew into
young adults and proud credit union members. A few
years back Harry Jr. even got
his grandson Harry IV, to join
SJFCU also!
Just recently, on another
bright and sunny day this past
June, Harry Jr. walked in to get
his umpteenth auto loan (he’s a
car lover)…. a brand spanking
new GMC truck. And guess
who helped him with his
loan? That’s right, Veronica!
“The same service, the same warmth and
the same smiles, even the handshake feels
the same“ commented Harry Jr.
From Eisenhower to Obama, rotary
phones to mobile phones, real clouds to
virtual clouds…. we can go on and on about
the many changes, but the one constant in
the past six decades is the Cassel family’s
immense loyalty to the credit union and
the credit union’s dedication to serving
members and their needs.
While today the very first member of the Cassel
family, Mr. Harry Cassel Sr., is a very dear memory to
all of us, we are grateful for the legacy of credit union
membership he instilled in his family. We want to
thank the Cassel’s for their loyalty and promise them
of continued great service for decades to come. And to
all the other loyal members of the SJFCU family, let’s
keep building memories, as we eagerly wait to share
the next one.

• CHANDA BALDWIN •
ometimes, life takes unexpected turns that
impacts us in ways we never would have
been able to foresee.
We turn our Member Spotlight to Chanda
Baldwin, a loyal member of the Credit Union for almost
10 years. In September of 2012, Chanda’s world was
turned upside down when she suddenly lost her husband
and was left to support her children
alone. Due to the tragedy of their
father’s passing, Chanda’s children
were deeply affected and Chanda
needed to leave her job to help them
recover. Unfortunately, this resulted in
her falling behind financially. With the
help of her loved ones, she was able
to get back on her feet and maintain a
steady income.
Upon returning to work,
Chanda wanted to fix her credit and pay
down her debt to improve her credit
score. On March 14, 2016, Chanda
visited her local Vineland branch
to discuss her situation with Branch Manager Girlie
Vasquez, and to inquire about how she could refinance
her car loan, because the payments were difficult for
her to afford.
Girlie contacted VP of Lending, Jim Hartmann
and explained Chanda’s situation. SJFCU was able to
refinance Chanda’s car loan to a lower interest rate!
“The Credit Union really helped me
a lot,” Chanda says, “because I was
paying a car loan with an interest rate
that was too high for me.” “Jim and
Girlie helped to lower my payment
to something I could afford. This
really took a burden off of my back,”
Chanda explained, “Now, I’m able
to manage my money better and pay
back the creditors that I owed.”

about how SJFCU has positively impacted their life.
Maybe it was something as simple as opening a Vacation Club and finally getting
to take that trip of a lifetime. Or maybe it was getting that loan when other

Safety Tips for Summer
Cookout Season
Outdoor grilling goes hand-in-hand with relaxed summertime fun. So it’s easy to forget that even for
the most skilled grill master, open flames pose serious fire hazards. Over half (57 percent) of grill fires on residential properties occur
in the months of May, June, July, and August, according to data from the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Incident Reporting
System . Make sure your summer grilling doesn’t become another statistic. Here are a few grilling tips for keeping the flames under
the burgers, where they belong:

Never leave a hot grill unattended. If you’re
grilling out, there’s a good chance you’re hosting
friends and family. So it’s worth saying: focus on safety
before entertaining. Never leave your grill unattended, and
always make sure the lid of a gas grill is open while igniting
- the build-up of gas in a closed grill can cause an explosion.

Clean up grill after use. Once the food is cooked
to perfection and your guests are raving about your
grill skills, it’s time to get rid any food residue and
highly-flammable grease. While the grill’s still warm, use a wire
brush to scrub the cooking grid and wipe down the burners.
If using a charcoal grill, allow the coals to cool completely,
and then dispose of them in a metal trash can with a lid.
Maintain your gas grill’s hoses. LP and natural
gas grills caused an average of 7,200 home fires
every year from 2007 to 2011, and leaks in propane
gas hoses were the leading cause, according to the NFPA.
Check for leaks annually by using this simple test from the
CPSC: Open the gas supply valve, apply a 1:1 soap and water
solution to the hose connection points, and then watch for
bubbles. If you see some, you’ve got a leak. The CPSC also
recommends routinely cleaning the tube that connects the
control valve to the burner. Grease, as well as any insects
making a home tube that connects the control valve to the
burner. Grease, as well as any insects making a home there,

of the tube. Simply use a pipe cleaner or wire to clean the tube.

Keep the grilling area clear of hazards. The
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
recommends that before lighting your grill ensure it’s at
least 10 feet away from your home, garage or any other building
on your property. Keep it far from any flammable materials as
well. That includes deck railings, eaves, overhanging branches,
starter fluid and spare liquid propane gas containers. According
to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 43 percent
of the residential outdoor grill fires recorded from 2007 to 2011
started when a flammable or combustible gas or liquid ignited.
With these precautions in mind, grab the hot dogs and corn-on-the-cob and start grilling some great summer memories. Also, be sure to let
