SLO Šavrinski godci so vokalno instrumentalna skupina, ki deluje kot sekcija pri Kulturnem dru{tvu Franceta Bevka iz Šmarij pri Kopru in je bila ustanovljena leta 2000. Vsi ~lani pojejo in igrajo na doma~e izvirne ljudske instrumente, kot so se neko~ ogla{ali v ljudski glasbi Slovenske Istre: rimonika trije{tina, {kent, istrski bajs, klarin, pero od ruja. Posebno pozornost posve~ajo izdelovanju in igranju na tradicionalna ljudska glasbila in zvo~ila iz kanele (nonole, po{~ale, piskal~e, {krgadice{), ki so bila v teh krajih pogosta. Doma so iz {avrinskih vasi v zaledju slovenske obale: Ko{tabone, Svetega Petra, Šmarij, Pu~ in Ga{ona. Namen delovanja skupine je odkrivati bogastvo in lepoto ljudske pesmi Slovenske Istre ter povrniti dostojanstvo nare~ni besedi in igranju doma~e muzike. Pesmi so ohranjene v slovenskem, italijanskem in hrva{kem nare~ju. Zaradi raznolikosti v instrumentih in glasovih ima skupina velike izrazne mo`nosti. Z ljudskimi glasbili spremljajo petje kakor v~asih na svatbah in ob pustu. Igrajo tudi plesne motive za razli~ne plese kot so {altin, dopa{i, {etepa{i, mazolka{. Poleg {tevilnih nastopov v Sloveniji so Šavrinski godci gostovali tudi v Italiji, Hrva{ki, Avstriji in Nem~iji. Posebno odmeven je bil njihov nastop v pala~i OZN v New Yorku leta 2002. EN The Šavrinski godci (Shavreensky godtzi) is a vocal and instrumental group active within the Cultural Society France Bevk from Šmarje (Shmarye) near Koper. The group is made up of nine devotees of folk singing. They all sing and play on original and unique, mostly home made musical instruments like Istrian Bass, the Rimonika Triestina, the bidophone, the nanole, the flute or whistle, the mouth organ and even on the sumac and sycamore leaves. The performers all come from villages of the Slovenska or Šavrinska Istra: from Ko{tabona, Krkav~e, Šmarje, Pu~e, Ga{on and Sv. Peter. The direct and unobtrusive rendition of music composed or adapted by simple folk and where during the singing an important role is played by rhythm, did in the past entertain the inhabitants of the Savrinian villages and also the folks across the borders of neighboring Croatian or Italian villages and towns. This type of music was much appreciated for wedding occasions and village fairs. The purpose of the vocal-instrumental group is to research, document and perform the beauty of the songs from Slovenian Istra, to restore the dignity of the local Savrinian dialect and the playing of the local music. Many songs have been preserved from the past in the Slovene, Italian or Croatian languages. The performers accompany the singing or play dance tunes on home made instruments. For their performances they are all dressed in the original Savrinian costumes, originating in the diverse villages of the Slovenska or Šavrinska Istra. ORQUESTA REVeÉ 1. 8. SLO Orquesta Revé, ki jo glasbeni navdu{enci poznajo kot 'El Charangon', je legendarna kubanska glasbena zasedba, znana po vsem svetu. Skupino je leta 1956 ustanovil nadarjeni, leta 1997 umrli glasbenik Elio Revé. Danes je njegov sin Elito Revé tisti, ki skrbi, da glasbena usmeritev skupine ostaja med tradicionalnim in inovativnim. EN Orquesta Revé, commonly known as 'El Charangon', is a music legend in Cuba and a worldwide famous. The Orquesta Revé was founded in 1956 by Elio Revé, a brilliant musician who died in 1997. Today it is his son, Elito Revé, which ensures the musical direction of the band between tradition and innovation. Its music, today like yesterday, is the happy expression of a creative synthesis between the Charanga format and Changué style. Today the Charangon is in a very successful phase nationally and internationally, at the top of its popularity, especially after the awards won in 2008 in Cuba and in France for its last recording 'Fresquecito' and it is worth acknowledging that its 'Timba' has never been so good! CESARE CHIACCHIARETTA SLO Duet Bandini-Chiacchiaretta, kitara in bandoneon, je nastal leta 2002 z namenom predstaviti glasbo Argentine skozi {arm in izraznost njenih najreprezentativnej{ih in{trumentov. Zahvaljujo~ svoji sporo~ilni mo~i in izjemni karizmi je duet nemudoma postal pomembna referen~na to~ka mednarodne glasbene scene. Na povabilo mednarodnih festivalov in gledali{~ po vsem svetu sta Bandini in Chiacchiaretta obiskala Mehiko, Romunijo, Kitajsko, Poljsko, Slova{ko, Avstrijo, Nem~ijo, [panijo, [vico, Francijo, Belgijo, Nizozemsko, Hrva{ko, Rusijo, Slovenijo, Tur~ijo, ^e{ko in Mad`arsko ter povsod, kjer sta igrala, navdu{ila ob~instvo in kritike. Duet je imel veliko ~ast igrati dvojni koncert “Hommage a Liege“ Astorja Piazzolle pod vodstvom dirigenta McLea Brouwerja v Avditoriju Paganini v Parmi ter za turinsko glasbeno zdru`enje s svetovno znanim orkestrom The Virtuosos of Moscow (Moskovski virtuozi) pod vodstvom dirigenta Pavla Bermana. Argentinski skladatelj Maximo Diego Pujol jima je posvetil svoje delo “Luminos Buenos Aires”, dvojni koncert za kitaro, bandoneon in orkester. Leta 2004 je duet Bandini-Chiacchiaretta v mestu Patti (Messina, Italija) prejel 15. nagrado Beniamina Joppola za izjemne umetni{ke dose`ke v glasbi. Le devet let prej, leta 1995, sta glasbenika debitirala v presti`ni Veliki dvorani Sanktpeterbur{ke filharmonije s tako odmevnim nastopom, da so ju nemudoma povabili k sodelovanju {e za naslednji dve leti. SEDEF SEDEF 2. 8. SLO Skupina Sedef goji poseben odnos do sevdalink. Vsak njihov nastop je polna posvetitev življenja in glasbe tisti skrivnostni zmesi ljubezni in strasti, ki jo v sebi nosi tur{ka beseda »sevdah«. V sevdalinkah se sre~ujeta stara ljudska pesem in orientalska glasba, kakor klic prostosti v odmevu njenih spon. Vsaka sevdalinka v izvedbi Sedefa je kakor prekipevajo~i val zanosa, ki se iz vrtincev trpljenja spet prevesi v vzpenjanje hrepenenja… Kljub najhuj{im padcem in ne~love{kemu trpljenju, ki odmeva skozi sen~ne balkanske doline, ta pesem postaja in ostaja hvalnica življenju, ljubezni in ~love~nosti. Stari arabski zdravilci so z besedo »sewda« poimenovali ~rni žol~, ki uravnava ~ustveno življenje. »Sedef« pomeni notranjost biserne {koljke, v kateri se prežemajo bujna melodija, spro{~eni ritem in njen liri~en glas. ^e je skupina {koljka, je njihova glasba biserni lesk nad teminami, ki se skozi upanje svetlika v novo zaupanje. EN The group Sedef fosters a unique relation toward sevdalinka songs. Each of their performances is a complete dedication of life and music to the mysterious fusion of love and passion, contained in the Turkish expression 'sevdah'. Sevdalinka intertwines ancient folk songs and oriental music as a cry of freedom in the echo of its ties. Every sevdalinka performed by Sedef resembles a foamy wave of ecstasy, breaking free from eddies of suffering and ascending into unquenchable yearning. Despite most bitter downfalls and inhuman suffering, which echo through shady Balkan valleys, the song has become and remained a hymn of life, love and humanity. Ancient Arabian healers used the word 'sewda' to refer to black bile, which governs manís emotional life. 'Sedef' signifies the inside of a pearl shell, imbued with lavish melody, free rhythm and a lyrical voice. If the group is the shell, their music is the pearly lustre, rising above the darkness and lighting the way through hope to new faith. Drugi album skupine »Les amants du Saint-Laurent« je bil prav tako nominiran za nagrado ADISQ leta 2005, poleg tega pa je bil izbran za album leta pri Canadian Folk Music Awards. Leta 2005 je Le Vent du Nord v Austinu (Teksas, ZDA) prejel nagrado v kategoriji najbolj{i severnoameri{ki tradicionalni umetnik. Nastop je bil nominiran za nagrado OPUS in ameri{ka radijskokoncertna serija Bound for Glory ga je razglasila za nastop leta. Skupini je uspel tudi preboj med najbolj{ih deset skladb na nekaj radijskih postajah; najve~ji uspeh je dosegla s prvim mestom na radiu CIBL Montreal ter s petim mestom na BBC3 v Veliki Britaniji, kjer se je uvrstila pred mnoge priznane glasbenike, npr. NAJNOVEJ[I ALBUM: LA PART DU FEU - 18. junij 2009 Po delovnem poletju, ko bo kvartet Québécois dobesedno preplavil evropske in ameri{ke festivalske odre (vklju~no z nastopom na dogodku Québec All-Stars v okviru festivala Burlington International Waterfront Festival), bo Le Vent du Nord 6. oktobra 2009 izdal nov studijski album, La Part du Feu (Borealis/Universal). Na{a pri~akovanja so razumljivo visoka. Na prvih {tirih albumih (prodanih ve~ kot 40,000 izvodov) so glasbeniki pokazali, da glasba ki jo igrajo, prihaja povsem naravno iz njim lastnih fluidnih aran`majev, tesne povezanosti in vokalne harmonije. La Part du Feu pomeni novo stopnjo zrelosti zvoka, ki je njihov za{~itni znak – je naslednji korak na poti naravnega razvoja. Pri~akujete lahko `ivahne pesmi in napeve, ki razkrivajo vedro glasbo, bolj barvite in odprte zdru`evanju kot kdaj koli poprej. Le Vent du Nord s simfoniki v Quebecu - 18. marec 2009 Simfoni~ni orkester mesta Quebec (Quebec City's Symphonic Orchestra) je objavil svoj program za sezono 2009-2010: resni~no izjemna serija, poimenovana »Les coups de coeur Hydro-Québec«, prina{a simfoni~ne priredbe pesmi zasedbe Le Vent du Nord pod dirigentsko taktirko maestra Airata Ichmounatova in s simfoni~nimi aran`maji Toma Myrona. Izbrane pesmi so z nagrajenih posnetkov »Dans les airs« in »Les amants du St-Laurent« ter nekaj neobjavljenega glasbenega gradiva skupine. http://www.osq.org Quebe{ka tradicija napolnila renesan~no glasbeno dvorano - 4. marec 2009 3. marca je Le Vent Du Nord nastopil v eni najbolj{ih dvoran za komorno glasbo na svetu, v Kilbourn Hall na Eastman School of Music v Rochesterju v New Yorku. Dvorana, polna ob~udovalcev skupine, naklju~nih obiskovalcev in {tudentov, je za`ivela v ~udovitih, vznemirljivih melodijah, zgodbah in smehu. Ve~er se je za~el s predstavitvijo skupine in zgodovine quebe{ke glasbe za vse nepou~ene. Ko se je koncert za~el, niti najbolj zadr`ani gledalci niso ve~ zdr`ali na sede`ih. Glasbo je spremljajo navdu{eno ploskanje in topotanje. Poznavalce glasbenega opusa skupine sta prijetno presenetili dve skladbi z novega albuma, ki bo po pri~akovanjih iz{el oktobra 2009. Le Vent na festivalu Celtic Connections - 16. februar 2009 Izjemen nastop skupine Le Vent du Nord na festivalu Celtic Connections v Glasgowu, kjer so glasbenike pri~akali {tevilni ob~udovalci. Na spletni strani festivala je skupina opisana takole: »Na festival smo povabili `e mnogo quebe{kih skupin, med katerimi je prav opojni kvartet Le Vent du Nord eden tistih, ki je v preteklih letih najbolj navdu{eval obiskovalce festivala Celtic Connections«. Ta nov prispevek k programu festivala je del »[kotske predstave«, med katero se je predstavila ogromna delegacija iz Quebeca. Za Le Vent du Nord je bila to prilo`nost, da se predstavi ve~ kot 200 umetni{kim direktorjem ter quebe{ki ministrici za kulturo in komunikacijo Christine St-Pierre. Le Vent du Nord se vra~ajo iz Velike Britanije! - 16. februar 2009 Le Vent du Nord so se vrnili z druge strani Atlantika, kjer je skupina uspe{no zaklju~ila serijo 13-ih koncertov v 8-ih mestih v Angliji, na [kotskem in Walesu. Kvartet je nastopal s svojo predstavo »Dans les airs«, ki je bila med glavnimi dogodki sezone v pomembnih koncertnih dvoranah in gledali{~ih. EN 6. 8. Since its inception in 2002, Le Vent du Nord has exploded onto the folk music scene. The group's first recording, Maudite moisson!, was awarded the Juno for traditional album of the year in 2004 and was nominated for the same award by ADISQ. Their second album »Les amants du Saint-Laurent« was also nominated by ADISQ in 2005 in addition to being chosen album of the year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. 2005 was also the year that saw the group being rewarded as North American traditional artist of the year in Austin, Texas. Their show was nominated for an OPUS award and was named Show of the year by the American radio-concert series Bound for Glory. The group also appeared on the top-ten charts of a few radio stations, as high as #1 on CIBL Montréal and #5 on BBC3 in the UK, ahead of such well-known artists as Youssou NíDour and Peter Gabriel. AMADOU DIARRA 7. 8. SLO Rojen v veliki družini griotov DIARRA po o~etu in DEMBELE po materi v kraju Djibasso, Bobo Diulasso v Burkini Faso, Zahodna Afrika. Grioti so zahodnoafri{ki zgodovinarji, pripovedovalci zgodb, legend, posredovalci v sporih, prvotno svetovalci poglavarjev. Še vedno so cenjeni v burkinski skupnosti, posebno na deželi. Ne smejo manjkati nikjer, kjer se dogaja kaj pomembnega, vedno so prisotni pri rojstvih, na porokah, ob smrtih, pa tudi pri krstih. Usposobljeni so za izdelovanje in igranje na vse tradicionalne instrumente, kot so brenkala n’goni in kora, mali pogovorni boben~ek taman, doundoun, djembe in seveda balafon. Amadou igra vse te instrumente, najmo~nej{i je na tolkalih, posebno doundoun in djembe, kjer pride do najboj{ega izraza njegova mo~na odrska karizma. Vendar je zaljubljen v koro, ki jo igra, kadarkoli ima ~as in seveda vedno bolj napreduje. U~enje kore ni, kot je znano, nikoli kon~ano in pravi mojstri potrebujejo desetletja, da jo obvladajo do perfekcije. Amadou igra na instrumente od malega, zadnja leta najve~ s svojima bratrancema. Živijo v glavnem mestu Ouagadougouju in igrajo v razli~nih lokalih, na porokah in ob krstih. Ustanovili so skupino Djenkadi in leta 2007 izdali svoj igriv CD z naslovom Tounga – Popotovanje, kjer se tradicionalna glasba prepleta z modernimi vložki rapa in saksofona. EN Born into a large family of griots – the DIARRA on the father’s side and the DEMBELE on the mother’s side – in a town called Djibasso, Bobo Diulasso, in Burkina Faso, West Africa. The griots and griottes (female practitioners) fulfil the role of West African oral historians, storytellers, mediators, originally consultants to tribal chiefs. They are still highly regarded in the Burkina community, in particular in rural areas. Griots should not be missing at any important event and are always present at births, weddings, deaths, and baptisms. They can make and play all the traditional instruments, such as the string instruments n’goni and kora, and the drums taman, doundoun, djembe, and the infamous balafon. Amadou plays all these instruments and is at his best on the drums, in particular the doundoun and the djembe, where his strong stage charisma is most expressed. However, his true love is with the kora. He plays it whenever he can spare a moment and his skill improves; however, the learning of the kora, is never complete and even true masters need decades to bring it to perfection. At his performances that normally last more than an hour, Amadou plays traditional instruments and sings in one of Burkina’s languages, called diulla. He sings about the harsh life in Burkina, about the griots whose profound understanding of things is the reason why in the depths of their souls they often feel alone although they are constantly surrounded by people; he sings about his ancestors and the legends of his homeland. He normally starts his show with some n’gona music, followed by masterful balafon playing and the cherry on the cake, djembe, the African drum that, awakened by the fingers of Amadou Diarra, tells the dark history of Africa. Amadou has been playing the instruments ever since he was a child, in recent years mostly with two of his cousins from the same family. They live the capital of Burkina, Ouagadougou, and play in bars and pubs, at weddings and baptisms. They founded a group Djenkadi and in 2007 released their first album titled Tounga (Travel), where the traditional music mingles with modern inserts pop rap and saxophone. At the end of 2006 and in September 2008 the group, using their old name Bakawili, was invited to Norway for three months to present their music, dances and traditional stories. They held several concerts that left not even the cold northerners untouched. WOLFSTONE 7. 8. SLO Wolfstone je {kotska glasbena skupina, ki jo je leta 1989 ustanovil Duncan Chisholm, znan po tem, da v svoji glasbi zdru`uje tradicionalno glasbo {kotskega vi{avja in rock and roll. Repertoar skupine sestavlja avtorska glasba in tradicionalne ljudske pesmi. Uspeh skupine Wolfstone gre nedvomno pripisati njihovi sposobnosti prenesti visoko kakovosten posneti material v fantasti~ne, nepozabne nastope v `ivo. Preigravata stare viže italijanske manj{ine (Veneto), katere se {e vedno prepevajo po istrskih vaseh in konobah ter tradicionalne dalmatinske pesmi ob katerih se spremljata na mandolino, mandolo, violino, lerono in {urlo. Branimir je po poklicu u~itelj glasbe in dela na glasbeni {oli v Pore~u. Kadar ne prepeva se ukvarja z etnomuzikologijo in o tem pi{e tudi knjige (Folklora crnogorske nacionalne manjine, 100 godi{nica glazbe u vasici Ka{telir-Labinci). Brata Ostoji} živita v mali istrski vasici Ka{telir, iz katere se je {e nedolgo nazaj vsak dan sli{al zvok okarine. Sedaj posku{ata zopet oživiti popularnost tega instrumenta, saj pravkar pripravljata mednarodni festival igralcev okarine. Sodelujeta s prof. Petanom, iz Filozofske fakultete v Ljubljani in Muzikolo{kim institutom v Zagrebu in Beogradu. EN At fishing parties, feasts, ethno festivals and in the tourist resorts of Istria, the music of the Ostoji} Brothers from Pore~ can be heard every summer. Their music is an interesting mix of traditional songs of the Italian minority in Istria (Veneto), still sung in Istrian villages and pubs, and traditional Dalmatian songs, accompanied by the mandolin, mandola, violin, lerona, and {urla (whistle). Branimir, a music teacher by profession, teaches at the Pore~ Music School. When he does not sing, he is engaged in ethnomusicology and writes books about it »Folklora crnogorske nacionalne manjine« (Folklore of the Montenegro National Minority), »100 godi{nica glazbe u vasici Ka{telir-Labinci« (100 Anniversary of Music in the Ka{telir-Labinci Village). The Ostoji} Brothers live in a small Istrian village Ka{telir, where the air was pervaded by the sound of ocarina no so long ago. The brothers are trying to revive the popularity of the instrument, and are currently preparing a festival of ocarina players. They cooperate with Prof. Petan from the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, and with the Musicology Institutes in Zagreb and Ljubljana. EILEEN ROSE 8. 8. SLO Eileen Rose je v Bostonu rojena kantavtorka, ki je odrasla v tesno povezani italijansko-irski dru`ini kot najmlaj{a izmed petih sester in treh bratov. Potem ko je opustila {tudij kazenskega prava, se je preselila v Anglijo, da bi tam postala prava rock zvezda. Kmalu se je njena solo kariera za~ela vzpenjati in od takrat se ni niti enkrat ozrla nazaj. Za neodvisno glasbeno zalo`bo Rough Trade Records (v ZDA Sanctuary Records in Compass Records) je posnela dva albuma, Shine Like It Does in Long Shot Novena. Njen tretji album Come the Storm je julija 2007 iz{el pri zalo`bi Banana Recordings (Sony) v Veliki Britaniji in po`el obilo pozitivnih kritik. V Zdru`enih dr`avah Amerike je Come the Storm iz{el julija 2007 pri zalo`bi Wildflower Records zvezde folk glasbe Judy Collins. Eileen Rose ima pogoste turneje po ZDA in Evropi (kjer je `ivela v letih 1991-2003). Njeno pesem »Shining« smo lahko sli{ali v Disneyevem filmu The Rookie (Nikoli ni prepozno) in je tudi na albumu filmske glasbe skupaj Stevom Earlom in Ryanom Adamsom. She has recorded 2 albums, Shine Like It Does and Long Shot Novena, for seminal UK label, Rough Trade Records (in the US, Sanctuary Records and Compass Records). Her third album, Come the Storm, was released in July 2007 on Banana Recordings (Sony) in the UK to much critical acclaim. In the US, Come the Storm was released on folk legend Judy Collins’ label, Wildflower Records in July 2007. She tours frequently in both the US and Europe (where she lived from 1991- 2003). Eileen’s song “Shining”’ was a featured song in the Disney movie The Rookie and is also on the soundtrack album, along with Steve Earle and Ryan Adams. Opening a new chapter in her diverse career, she took her music to Detroit, tracking down the city’s deep-rooted musical Soul. SLO Orquestra do Fubá navdu{uje s svojo energijo, sve`ino in prepri~ljivostjo. Po uspe{ni turneji leta 2005 (ve~ kot 80 koncertov po vsej Evropi) skupina zdaj predstavlja svoj novi album Quem mandô. Album je v vseh pogledih korak naprej, saj prina{a ve~ ustvarjalnosti kot kdajkoli prej, ve~ raznovrstnosti, ve~ instrumentalnih sola`, genialna tolkala, pop zvok ter nesporen forró ritem. Vse ~lane skupine odlikuje zelo mo~na sporo~ilna energija: so skladatelji in liriki obenem. ^eprav glasbeniki z lastnimi karierami, so prav zdru`eni v Orquestra do Fubá pomagali ustvariti nov pristop k forru. FORRÓ Glasbena zvrst Forró prihaja iz revnih kmetijskih severovzhodnih brazilskih pokrajin Nordeste. Prebivalci teh krajev so me{anica avtohtonih ameri{kih indijanskih plemen, portugalskih priseljencev in potomcev afri{kih sužnjev. Ena od razlag besede forró prihaja iz besede forrobodó, kar pomeni velika zabava, druga pa, da prihaja iz angle{ke for all – za vse. Besedila so obi~ajno ljubezenska in opisujejo romance, ljubosumnosti, nostalgije…. Forró sega v {estdeseta leta prej{njega stoletja. Zasluga za ponovno odkritje bogatega glasbenega izro~ila teh krajev gre harmonikarju z imenom Luiz Gonzaga. Glasbo, katera je postajala vse bolj priljubljena, so glasbeniki po~asi preselili v ve~ja mesta in kon~no po vsej Braziliji. Zvrst je doživela neverjeten razcvet in se je kon~no globoko zasidrala v brazilsko narodnostno zavest. Postala je nadvse popularna oblika druženja. Po odli~ni glasbeni podlagi se je razvil ples forró. Ple{e se v parih in predstavlja enega najljub{ih brazilskih plesov. Izvirna zasedba sestoji iz treh glasbenikov, torej trio. Harmonika, triangel in zabumba – basovski boben. Kasneje so se instrumenti raz{irili {e na rabeca (violina), pandeiro (okvirjen boben), kitaro, cavaquinho – lutnjo in na bas. Glasbeniki Orquestra do Fubá nam v forró glasbi prina{ajo na Bled del~ek brazilske du{e. EN The Orquestra do Fubá is constantly amazing in its energy, freshness and conviction. Following a very successful tour in 2005 (over 80 concerts in Europe), the group now presents an exciting new album: Quem mandô. Musicians with strong communicative energy, all the members of the group are composers and lyricists. Together (although each also has his own individual career) they have helped to create a new approach to forró. FORRÓ Forró originated in the 1940s in the poor rural areas of Nordeste, Brazil. It was popularised by the legendary accordionist Luiz Gonzaga, who, taking inspiration from the traditional music of that region, reinvented a repertoire that was very soon taken up by musicians from Nordeste who had moved to the country’s major cities. Originally forró was played by a trio: accordion, triangle, zabumba (bass drum). With time and different influences other elements were gradually added, borrowed from folk or other genres: rabeca (fiddle), fifes, pandeiro (frame drum), guitar, cavaquinho (a plucked lute, midway between a guitar and a mandolin) and bass. Inseparable from public dances, forró remains indifferent to fashions and delights all those who like to dance the night away. Danced by couples, it is a good social activity and a way of getting to know members of the opposite sex. Quite recently, forró, adopted by Brazilian youth, has become trendy and very popular in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. No longer truly rural, it is now associated with students, but the original spirit of dancing and celebration is still there, with more recent musical influences. From the arid lands of Nordeste to Europe, forró carries with it the soul of the Brazilian people and their music. Ricardo Teperman ñ Guitar & voice At the age of twenty this talented young composer was a prizewinner at the Vinicius de Moraes Festival presided over by Chico Buarque. He is the author of the great hit songs Beijo roubado and Cala a boca (over 500,000 copies sold in Brazil). Today, with his voice and guitar, he presents the subtle colours of bossa nova and MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira) with the Orquestra do Fubá. In September 2005 one Ricardo Teperman’s compositions won the Grand Prix (presented by Gilberto Gil) at the Cultura Festival in Brazil. Fernando do Cavaco ñ Cavaquinho & voice Coming from a musical family, Fernando do Cavaco was immersed from a very early age in the rich choro and samba tradition. Fascinated by music from every culture, he completed his training in ethno-musicology in Paris. He composes lively melodies and as a singer, accompanying himself on the covaquinho, he shows infectious enthusiasm. He is a worthy follower of the great singers of samba and pagode. Ricardo Herz ñ Violin The young virtuoso violinist Ricardo Herz trained at the world’s most prestigious jazz schools (USP, Berklee, Centre de Musiques Didier Lockwood). He has accompanied the great names of forró, including Dominguinhos and Oswaldinho do Acordeon. In 2004 he was one of the great revelations of the 7th edition of the Brazilian music awards (VISA) in the Instrumentalists category. José Carlos Moura ñ Accordion José Carlos Moura has won several prizes for his accordion playing. He made his first stage appearances as accompanist to members of the young generation of exponents of the French chanson (Wladimir Anselme, Drôle de Sire). Two years spent in Brazil enabled him to immerse himself in popular Brazilian music. That was how he discovered forró, to which he is now dedicated as a member of the Orquestra do Fubá. Natallino Neto ñ Bass Born in the poor suburbs of Rio, Natallino Neto discovered the bass at the age of seventeen. A year later he was playing with Baden Powell, then with the great names of bossa nova and Brazilian instrumental music (samba, jazz, choro), including Carlos Lyra, Billy Blanco, Sebastião Tapajós and Hamilton de Holanda. Wander Pio ñ Percussion A poly-instrumentalist and composer, Wander Pio studied musicology at the University of Rio de Janeiro, then went on to work in theatre and cinema, producing the music for several films. On his zabumba (bass drum) he explores all the rhythmic traditions of Nordeste. Mathieu Gramoli - Percussion A Parisian who is a fervent admirer of musical blends, Mathieu Gramoli started drumming at the age of 15. Starting out with rock and funk, he turned towards jazz and world music : a graduate of Didier Lockwood’s Centre des Musiques and winner of the 2004 Tremplin “Esprit Jazz at St Germain des Pres” with Nagual Orchestra’s hard bop quintet. He enrolled in 2005 in the Paris CNSM, accompanies the funk group Captain Mercier (Music Victory Award 2003), Hamilton de Hollanda, Marcello Preto, Ricardo Herz and tours with Orquestra do Fuba. 1. PAUL GOSPEL CHOIR ZDA / USA v ejti stih SLO Ejti [tih se je rodila leta 1957 na Bledu kot Marija [tih, a se je je za vse življenje prijel vzdevek Ejti. Potem ko je leta 1981 magistrirala pri Krstu Herdu{i~u v Zagrebu, se je odpravila po svetu in v Santa Cruzu spoznala svojega moža. Njeno delo je mo~no zaznamovano z družbeno zavzetostjo in trenutnimi politi~nimi ter družbenimi dogodki po svetu, {e posebej v Boliviji. Zadnje ~ase predvsem z vlado predsednika Eva Moralesa. Vendar pa se seznam dejavnosti ne kon~a zgolj pri slikanju, temve~ se nadaljuje z ilustracijami v ~asopisih in revijah, s posterji, keramiko itd. Že v Sloveniji se je uveljavila kot odli~na scenografinja (za svoje kostumografsko delo je prejela tudi nagrado Pre{ernovega sklada), dejavnost pa uspe{no nadaljuje tudi v Boliviji, kjer postavlja na oder prizore iz sveta, ki jo obkroža. Ta ista slikovitost pa zaznamuje (pogosto ogromne) slike, kot je monumentalen Križev pot za katedralo Riberalta v Boliviji, ki so ga morali iz Santa Cruza do Riberalta zaradi velikosti prepeljati s posebnim voj{akim letalom. Poleg tega se ukvarja tudi s pou~evanjem risanja in slikanja ter vodi umetni{ke delavnice v Santa Cruzu. EN Ejti Stih was born in Bled, Slovenia in 1957 and has lived in Bolivia since 1981. She studied at Ljubljana Fine Arts School in Slovenia and received a Masters Degree at Krsto Herdusic Workshop in Zagreb, Croacia. She pursued further training in ceramic workshops and drama workshops in Bolivia. In addition to her extensive list of works of art, she has illustrated for newspapers, magazines, and designed posters and wine labels. She teaches drawing and painting at visual art workshops in Santa Cruz. Since 1982, her work has been exhibited individually at important venues in Bolivia and abroad, such as the Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana, Madrid; Galería Tabula Rasa, Brussels; Museo Nacional de Arte, La Paz; Galería Bernheim, Panamá; Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires; Galería Cecilia González, Lima and Museo Bonnat, France. She has participated in important collective exhibitions such as the Biennal in Cuenca in 1990, Museo de Artes Moderno, Cali, Colombia in 1991, Feria Exposición in Seville in 1992, Bienal Sao Paolo, Brazil in 1994, Palacio Linares, Madrid in 1995, Mall Galleries in London in 1996, and the Americas Society in New York the same year, and in 1998 in ARCO, Madrid. She has received important awards for her work in lithography and stage design in Slovenia, and has received First Prizes and Honourable Mentions at the most prestigious Bolivian venues such as Salón Pedro Domingo Murillo in La Paz and the Salón 14 de Septiembre in Cochabamba. She also received a prize granted by the critics of Viña del Mar in Chile for the best foreign exhibition in 1997. Her work is held in private and public collections in Bolivia, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, United States, Argentina, Colombia, Japan, England, Panama and Brazil. 19.
