This is a two to three year programme giving individuals insight into the company by working in all areas of the organization. The programme is used alongside succession planning to ensure we have suitable successors for management positions to meet our current and future growth plans. We have found this to be a refreshing exercise which has benefited the company greatly. Performance appraisals Performance appraisals are completed on a yearly basis for all staff employed within the company. This is a formal process, which we adopted in June 2008. The appraisal not only covers direct employees but allows us to incorporate any subcontracting organisations we are employing at the time. The appraisal itself covers the individual or company’s (in the case of subcontracting organisations) performance and takes approximately one hour to complete. Preparation in advance of the appraisal is completed by both parties. This is a standard type of pro-forma that acts as the discussion document for the main appraisal. The performance is discussed initially focusing on the positives and then moving to the areas where further development is needed. The appraisal then moves to the aspirations of the individual and from here a Personal Development Plan (PDP) is produced. The PDP is then monitored by the company’s training department for progress against completion. Connectel successfully completed many temporary and permanent works packages during this period. We also had a number of core maintenance/small-works crews operating throughout the project as well as during both the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Schemes completed included; - Hockey drop off and lifeline roads inclusive of a 720m2 concrete retaining wall - 1200m2 reinforced concrete lagoon for storage and re-use of all site run off waters - The Basketball Arena ground works - The South Plaza entrance and coach park - The North Plaza entrance – construction phase - Search + screen buildings at all entrances - Hard landscaping projects throughout the park - Design, installation and maintenance of landscaped areas - Blackwater deep drainage project - Maintenance/emergency response teams during the Olympic and Paralympic Games. 12 | Connectel infrastructure services Connectel maintained a very good supply chain relationship, not only with Volker Highways but also with CLM, who noted that we consistently delivered quality workmanship whilst meeting some very demanding timescales. Our compliance to the high level of HSEQ expected on the Olympic Park build was also recognised, with several monthly awards being received by both our management and operative teams. Case study two VOSA Pavillion Lane Compound Client: Enterprise Mouchel – working with Transport for London Value: £162,000 Date: Nov 2012 - Jan 2013 Connectel Ltd was approached by our client Enterprise Mouchel to design and build an office/compound for the use of VOSA and the Metropolitan Police. Connectel carried out a topographical survey on the site, which was a banked grass verge with several redundant concrete barrier posts, and produced a design drawing proposal. Our design reduced the area down to existing carriageway level, leaving a 1:3 sloped bank around the site footprint, ready for the office building and car park. The car park area was designed and installed using open cell paving, which provided not only a financial saving for the client but a finish which blended with the surrounding area. - Installation of 2.4m high Paladin weld mesh security fencing and sliding gates - Completion of soft landscaping around the finished site. Connectel provided a fully project managed service from design to completion. Tasks undertaken by Connectel during the project were: - Excavation and profiling of the site - Installation of drainage including cesspool - Electrical works – ducting, cabling and installation of feeder pillar - Street lighting - Water service and connections - Set out and installation of reinforced concrete pad foundations for the pre-fabricated office - Supply and establishment of the pre-fabricated office through a supply chain partner - Backfill and final reinstatement of hard landscaping Connectel infrastructure services | 13 Case study three Hanger Lane Fire Main Client: AMEY Value: £275,000 Date: Jan - Mar 2012 Connectel Ltd was asked to design and build a new fire main system in the Hanger Lane tunnel on the A40 in West London. Connectel carried out all elements of works from design, planning and construction to testing the new mains, one at each portal. It was designed to be an electro-fusion welded HDPE pipe under the carriageway and insulated stainless steel pipe above ground, with flanged connections at the change points. The mains connection point into the Thames Water network was above the tunnel on the exit/entry slip roads. These had to be excavated across to the tunnel retaining wall. The wall was then diamond core drilled and the main was fixed to the tunnel wall at high level down to 1m below the footway. The stainless steel pipe was secured with chemically anchored bolts, which successfully passed pull-off tests prior to the main being installed. During tunnel closures the mains were laid across the A40 carriageway into the central reservation where a bespoke double fire hydrant outlet point and cabinet were installed. The new fire main system was then pressure tested and chlorinated before Thames Water made the final connection into their network to commission the new mains. 14 | Connectel infrastructure services All works were carried out during night time hours to reduce disruption to commuters, and as consideration was also given to local residents regarding noise levels, we were left with a very small working window. Even with these constraints the project was delivered successfully as per our programme of works and below the client’s budget. Case study four Eltham Tunnel Control Building Client: Enterprise Mouchel Value: £170,000 Date: June - Sept 2012 As part of the Enterprise Mouchel supply chain, Connectel was awarded a works package to construct a control building on behalf of Transport for London at Eltham tunnel. The scheme was to establish a new control building above the tunnel to house all of the electric and data cables associated with its operation. We also undertook civil works to reconstruct the carriageway around the new structure. Connectel completed the scheme on budget and ahead of the scheduled programme end date, with no reportable HSEQ issues. The high standard of workmanship was recognised not just by Enterprise Mouchel but also by Transport for London who thanked the Connectel team for a “job very well done”. The works involved several challenges which were all met and dealt with successfully. One problem was the added weight of a new building on the tunnel roof; this was overcome by the innovative use of structural polystyrene to replace excavated materials to balance out the extra loading. The existing waterproof seal of the tunnel roof had to be broken to allow access manholes to be built around the 18 no. core holes which were diamond core drilled through the 1m thick roof slab. This was done to enable all power and data cabling to be connected to the tunnel from the control building. This had to be done without damaging the reinforcing bars or the integrity of the slab, and most importantly reinstating the waterproofing layers so as to prevent any future damage. The core holes also are directly above the carriageway of the A2 Rochester Way.
