Jacome headed to World Cup
KINDERHOOK — It’s official, Mariela Jacome is heading to Canada in June to
compete at the highest level
in women’s soccer — the
World Cup.
On Friday morning, the
Federacion Ecuatoriana de
Futbol in Ecuador named the
St. John’s University freshman — and Ichabod Crane
High School graduate — to
the final roster for the FIFA
Women’s World Cup team.
Jacome, a Kinderhook
native, is eligible to play for
the team as her late father
was born in the South
American nation.
“Eight months before my
father passed from cancer he
told me he wanted me to play
at the highest level I could,”
Jacome said in a release from
St. John’s. “Now I have the
opportunity to honor that
dream and I’m extremely
grateful for that.”
As a freshman at St.
John’s this past season,
Jacome took the field in all
20 games and picked up an
assist in her collegiate debut
against St. Francis College.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic
for Mariela,” Red Storm
coach Ian Stone said in a
release. “She is one of the
hardest working players I
have ever coached. This is a
tremendous
honor
for
Mariela, her family, her
friends — everyone who has
helped her on her way, and
for St. John’s women’s soccer. I was already really
excited for the FIFA
Women’s World Cup in
Canada; now to have one of
our own student-athletes
playing in it is remarkable.”
Jacome had no intention
of even trying out for the
World Cup team just a few
months ago, but a chance trip
to visit relatives in Ecuador
led her to impressing coaches
enough to earn an official
tryout.
That led to her being
named to the preliminary
roster of 27 athletes that
competed in friendly matches over the past two months.
From there, the roster was
whittled down to 23 coveted
spots on the final roster
which Jacome is now a part
of.
Ecuador makes its World
Cup debut on June 8 in
Vancouver, where the team
faces Cameroon at BC Place
Stadium. The four-team
group
also
includes
Switzerland and Japan — the
defending champion.

NFCA All-Region

LOUISVILLE — The Sage
College softball team had a
school-record two athletes
named to the 2015 National
Fastpitch Coaches Association
All-Northeast Region Team
this week.
According to a release
from the school, Sage’s rookie
second baseman Alexa Silk, of
Freehold, and senior catcher
Kristen
Beikirch,
of
Brockport, were named to the
All-Region Team as Silk
earned Second Team acclaim
and Beikirch earned a spot on
the Third Team.
Silk, who belted her teamleading seventh home run of
the season during the ECAC
Tournament was a First Team
Skyline Conference pick as
well this year and finished
with a team-best .414 average
with 12 doubles, a triple and
seven home runs to go with
her 24 RBIs.
The Greenville High
School graduate had a blistering .730 slugging percentage
with a .449 on-base percentage. Her 2015 home run performance ranks No. 2 all-time
in single-season home runs at
Sage. She was 9 for 10 on
stolen base attempts and had a
.927 fielding percentage, helping to turn three double plays
in her first collegiate campaign.
Silk ranks in a number of
Sage single-season categories
as she was No. 9 in hits (46),
No. 6 in doubles (12), No. 8 in
runs scored (31), No. 17 in
RBI’s (24), No. 16 in batting
average (.414) and No. 19 in
at-bats (111).
Sage went 18-17 on the
year, having participated in
both the Skyline Conference
and ECAC Division III tournaments for the fourth straight
season.
• Brantley, Schultz find their
groove in minors
Hudson High School graduate Justin Brantley has been
on a roll since taking his first
loss of the season in late
February.
Pitching for the Lynchburg
Hillcats — the Single A
Advanced affiliate of the
Cleveland Indians — Brantley
hasn’t given up a run in his
past five outings while throwing in a relief role.
For the season, Brantley
(0-1) has tossed 21 1-3
innings over 10 games and has
19 strikeouts, six walks, five
earned runs, 14 hits and a 2.11
ERA.
Jaime
Schultz,
of
Castleton, had a four-game
winning streak built up and
was undefeated in six starts on
the hill for the Double A
Montgomery Biscuits — a
Tampa Bay Rays affiliate —
until Monday, when the
Tennessee Smokies finally got

VALATIE — Calista Phippen
ended the regular season with a
bang, throwing a no-hitter on the
mound to lead Ichabod Crane to a
14-0 win over Lansingburgh on
Friday at home.
With the victory, the Lady
Riders clinch a share of the
Colonial Council varsity softball
title for the first time since leaving
the Patroon Conference. They share
the championship with Cohoes.
“I’m very proud of what these
girls have done so far this season,”
ICC coach Tracy Nytransky said in
an email. “After losing to Cohoes
early in the year, we came back and
did everything right to beat them on
Wednesday.”
Phippen gave up just one walk
in a dominating performance on the
mound.
