A word
FROM
OUR PRESIDENT...
Welcome to June. This month the theme is
“Snake & Mongoose”. So, bring in your Tom McEwen
and Don Prudhomme cars, your Cobras and Viper, etc.
Next, Thanks to everyone that made the NNL a
success. It was a great show and a good time.
Now, to those of you who were staring in wonder
as I walked around the NNL with a Monogram ‘Fast
Buck’ kit under my arm, I bought it. Yes, I bought it
for the Oddballs Modeling Group’s June “zombie
apocalypse” build and it is completed. Yes, the starter
finished something. It is a simple kit that you can not
take seriously. Which makes it perfect for converting
to a ‘B’ movie zombie destroyer. Slap a few weapons on it, a quick urban camo job and just have
fun. If, you are bogged down and taking your
modeling too seriously dig out an easy kit you
do not care about and slap it together in a week
like I did with this ‘Fast Buck’ kit. It will really clear the
mind and bring some fun back into your modeling.
And, for those of you that need more ‘out of the
closet’ time come join us Saturday, July 6th at the
Eden Prairie library, 565 Prairie Center Drive at 1:00
PM. The Oddballs Modeling Group would love to see
you and whatever you are building and it is free.
What is happening with my more serious builds
you ask, not much good. After bringing my long
standing resin hanger queen, the 1/20 scale Williams
FW-22, to last months meeting, I thought I would just
shove it to completion knowing it will never be what
I would want it to be now that my car finishing has
improved so much since knowing all of you. And by
the way thank you for all the help and encouragement over the years. Thinking I would start out slow,
I was going to finish up the wheels. Simple enough?
Not with three front tires and one rear. so, I am working on casting up a second rear tire. Stalled again.
My WCW and UPS NASCARs. Well, the Slixx decals
are going on without much trouble, except that the
decals that act as the cheat line between the two
painted body colors on both cars show the color
change underneath them. So, I had to buy a second
sheet of Slixx decals for both cars in the hope that
doubling up the decals will solve the problem. Such
is modeling.
See you at the meeting. Bob.
Model of the Month...
built by Scott Harveiu
article by Toby Halliday
The model of the month for our resin themed
meeting comes to us from Scott Harvieux. Although
there were plenty of resin kits on the table, Scott
had one of the few that was actually built. It was of
a Lotus E20 that ran in the 2012 Formula One series,
driven by Kimi Raikkonen.
This particular resin kit was manufactured by an
obscure company called Bee Line. Scott said that
there was a fair amount of sanding that had to be
done to get the parts to fit. Once all that was done,
he applied Black Tamiya straight from the rattle can,
and then some Testors Guards Red where needed
with the airbrush. The carbon fiber on this one is a
mixture of decals and some creative painting. This
one was assembled straight out of the box, and
aside from the sanding issues mentioned earlier,
Scott said there were a lot of white metal parts
to bend also.
Scott said this one took him about 1 month to
complete, and chose it because Kimi Raikkonen is
one of his favorite drivers. In one particular race, as
the crew chief was barking orders at Kimi, he yelled
back on the radio “Leave me alone, I know what I
am doing”. Scott thought this to be pretty good,
considering that something like that does not happen very often with today’s polished and politically correct athletes. Next time you get a chance,
check this one out. Much like Kimi, it looks like Scott
“knows what he is doing”.
“I don’t recall Don or Tom ever actually
attempting the loop-de-loop. A little
embelishment for the sake of marketing
I suspect, hmmmm Mattel?”
On The Table...
by Bob Maderich
Well, it was the merry month of May and resin
was on display.
Hugh Heidt had two unbuilt kits to share with us,
a beautiful Ferrari Enzo “Speciale” and the Mini-Exotics
Chaparral 2J.
Bill Halvorson dug into his resin chamber and
brought us 5 very nice kits. The Mini-Exotics Chaparral
2H, the Fisher Porsche 908, a McLaren M16 Indy car
from Lance Sellers, a Quick-skins Corvette GTP car, and
finally a lovely Ford Mirage from LeMans miniatures.
Bob Ferreira brought is almost complete Williams
F-1 car from Treasure Hunt.
Tyler Halliday gave us two resin bodies, a 40 Ford
hearse,and a ‘64 Plymouth drag car.
Jim Allen had two built MCW resin drag cars to show
us, a ‘66 Plymouth Belvedere and a ‘66 Chevy Biscayne.
Both were conversion bodies. He also had his “White
Elephant” done, a ‘87 Mustang IMSA car from Monogram. A ‘50 Olds, built from the new Revell kit was also
part of his handiwork. Finally, he gave us a 427 Cobra
that he completed for his son.
Bob Halliday had 4 resin bodies to display, a ‘64
Dodge AFX car, a ‘66 Dodge Coronet, a ‘65 Dodge
Satellite (these were both from MCW) and finally a ‘71
Plymouth Road Runner.
Scott Harvieux graced us with his completed
Lotus E20 F-1 car from last years season. It looked very
nice, but Scott didn’t always have the nicest things to
say about the Beeline kit.
Bill Read brought an in-progress build of a modern
Cuda using plenty of resin pieces.
Larry Reasland had two NASCAR’s for us, an ‘87
Chevy that Dale Earnhardt drove and his finally completed ‘84 Petty Pontiac that he has been working on
for a while.
Bill Johanneck brought 4 cars to display, a ‘70
Corvette snap kit, a 72 Chevy Nova, a ‘66 Chevelle, and
a ‘67 El Camino.
Bob Maderich had his Pre-65 challenge car on
display, an Aurora Porsche 904, just a joy to build! A
new Hudson Hornet, built to represent Frank Mundy’s stocker was also on the table. Two previous resin
builds were there as well, an Etzel Midget, and a Fisher
Chaparral 2F.
Clint Williams and Tim Graf gave us two Auto
Union Land Speed cars from the 1930’s. Both were
resin pieces from. He also had a Starter Porsche 908, a
Jimmy Flintstone ‘34 Ford Bonneville car, and our own
Model Martin’s Center door T.
Finally as it was the weekend of the NNL, we
had two of our Wisconsin friends join us at the
meeting. Mike Klessig brought us a Studio
27 Ferrari 512BB, and a Fisher McLaren
M6a Can-Am car. Paul Johnston went
the small route and had the
Monogram 289 Cobra
for us to see.
It was overall a
great display of the
resin casters art.
