Making growth work In Memoriam board’s message T 4 his year we celebrate our 26th Hillside Community Festival. During the years, many have dedicated an extraordinary number of hours alongside 25 boards and hundreds of board members before us. For some, a challenge is in the changing evolution of a festival that has found its way to being one of the most popular in Canada; for others, there have been painstaking moments, roundtable discussions of growth, more patrons, more music, more food, more infrastructure and our new journey with the soon-to-be three-year-old Hillside Inside winter event. Growth is a question on the minds of many Hillsiders and the subject of lively discussion around the kitchen table of members everywhere. Growth, however, can be about development, improvement, cultivation and formation. Lynda Roach was a longtime Hillside coordinator for the Waste Management area and warrior for the earth. Lynda was a hard-working, dedicated and valued member of the Hillside Family. Often the last T he Gate Tent in the mainland parking lot is your point of entry to Hillside. There, you will receive your wristband after parking your car or getting off the free shuttle bus from downtown. Please note that there is no gate along the causeway to the island. If you are camping in the park, you will need to go through the Gate Tent before heading onto the island. There is designated temporary parking at the Gate Tent if you drive there from your campsite to pick up your wristband/ID. Please remove your car from temporary parking after you check in. Please note: Wristbands or Hillside IDs are MANDATORY to get onto the island. The Gate Tent will have your wristbands – please check in there. All performers MUST check in at the hotel, whether they are staying there or not, to pick up their festival ID and package. All volunteers must check in at the Gate Tent to show their membership card and ID in exchange for their weekend wristband. to the leave the Island on Monday, Lynda showed true commitment to keeping it green. Celebrating music and community photo: julian katz Bus Schedule The downtown Guelph bus stop is at the Stone Store, 14 Commercial Street, south of Paisley & Norfolk. Hillside volunteers are stationed there to take your ticket and exchange it for a wrist band. Arriving by Bus Hillside provides free shuttle bus service for patrons and volunteers. The bus leaves downtown Guelph from the Stone Store parking lot on Commercial Street (see bus schedule at right). Exchange your patron ticket for a wristband before boarding the bus. • If you have your Hillside ticket with you: Please exchange this with a gate volunteer before boarding the shuttle bus in Guelph. You can then stay on the bus all the way to the island entrance. Shuttles may stop at the Gate Tent to allow those without wristbands to exit. No re-entry. A separate shuttle bus will take those patrons to the island entrance. • If you need to purchase or pick up your ticket, or register as a volunteer/vendor/workshop presenter: Exit the bus at the Gate Tent and get in the appropriate queue to get your wristband or Hillside ID. Then either take a shuttle bus or walk to the island entrance. Signs from the Gate Tent will direct you to the Green Path, which is completed and can be used to reach the island much faster now. photo: lauren purves Arriving by Car Mainland parking is in the fields beside the Gate Tent. There is a charge of $6 per day or $18 for the weekend. Please slow down and allow the volunteers to collect the fee and issue your parking pass; have your money ready. Please consider carpooling. • If you are camping in the conservation area: Please do not leave your vehicle idling. Park in the temporary parking area and get your wristband at the Gate Tent. If you drive to your campsite first, you’ll still need to come back to the Gate Tent to exchange your tickets for wristbands. • If you are coming for the day: Park your car at mainland parking. Please have your $6 parking fee ready. Walk to the Gate Tent and pick up your wristband. Public bus service begins at 4 pm and runs approximately every 20 minutes thereafter. The last bus to Hillside is at 9 pm. You can exchange tickets for wristbands from 4 – 9 pm at the bus stop. The last bus back to Guelph from the causeway is at 12:30 am. Saturday & Sunday The first bus to Hillside is at 10 am. It runs approximately every 20 minutes from downtown to the Gate Tent and the causeway. The last bus to Hillside is at 9 pm. You can exchange tickets for wristbands from 10 am – 8 pm at the bus stop. The last bus back to Guelph from the Hillside causeway is at 12:30 am. Accessible Buses Accessible buses leave from downtown on the hour and return from the island on the half hour. Hop on the free shuttle to the causeway or walk down the Green Path. Our Welcome Crew is ready to check your accreditation. Please show your wristbands as you cross into Hillside. Thank you and enjoy the festival! Arriving by Bicycle There is a bike lock-up on the island. Please bring your own lock. Pick up your wristband at the Gate Tent on the mainland, then proceed to the island. Please slow down to show the Welcome Crew your wristband. While the Lock-Up is staffed by volunteers, Hillside cannot assume responsibility, so check that your lock is in good working order. Contributors W elcome to the 2009 Hillside Festival! Whether you’re a Hillside veteran or this is your first event, I would like to thank each and every one of you lovely volunteers for your continued support and dedication. Hillside boasts one of the largest, most dynamic volunteer programs in Wellington County. We are able to offer over 60 different operational areas. These include everything from dish washing to cashiers to security. There are pre-, during- and post-festival opportunities to allow for more folks to participate. There are some new initiatives and areas within the volunteer program for 2009 including: Group Orientations for New Volunteers – an orientation of the festival site and tour of key areas, for example, registration, hospitality and camping. Eco Volunteer Waste Crew – a dedicated waste management crew for volunteer camping to educate and orientate volunteers on proper waste disposal. Volunteer Support – all volunteers were given the opportunity to help a fellow volunteer who required additional support. Volunteers contribute to the festival for many reasons – community building, meeting new people, gaining experience and more. Whatever your reason may be, I hope you have a safe and enjoyable experience with us. Beverages are only served in reusable mugs and wine glasses, which are $2 each (taxes included). From the Beer Tent Coordinators and volunteers behind the bar, we lift a mug to say, “Thanks for drinking responsibly – cheers!” all recycling and waste containers. You may also bring your dirty dishes to us to wash for you. Dishwashing facilities are located to the right of the Main Stage. Stop by and say hello to our hard working Dish Ninjas. These hardworking, amazing volunteers are here 16 hours a day to make disposable dishes a thing of the past. Let’s prove that it can be done! ATM First Aid A cash machine is on site near the Information Booth. Dishwashing & Reusable Dishes Take a plate, snag a mug and grab a spork. Do your part in eliminating disposable dishes from Hillside. All beer tents have reusable beer mugs for sale. Reusable sporks are available in the Food Pavilion, Merch Tent, beer tents and Info Booth. Food vendors serve on our sturdy, reusable plates. We collect and clean all of the plates, cups and cutlery used throughout the weekend. Keep your eyes open for the dish stations outside the Food Pavilion and dish bins, conveniently located along with photo: julian katz Every year, we are fortunate to have volunteers from the Canadian Ski Patrol System providing first aid services. Look for the white tent at the entrance to the festival site, or check the site map on the back cover for their location. Information Booth Find everything you need – from sun block and condoms to tampons and diapers – at the Info Booth, located at the entrance to the festival site. Hillside surveys (located in the centre of this program) can be handed in at the Info Booth in exchange for a raffle ticket. Fill out the survey and you might just win the Ultimate Hillside 2010 Weekend Package. Celebrating music and community The Green Trail, established over the past few years with the help of Hillside patron donations, links parking to the festival site – and provides a relaxing stroll to start or end a day of music. Look for trail signs near the beach at the causeway and the Gate Tent in the parking lot. Lost & Found Located in the Information Booth. After the festival, the contents of the Lost & Found are at the Hillside office at 123 Woolwich Street, Guelph (519-763-6396). Merchandise Tent Loved the performer you just saw? This gives you the chance to talk to artists and activists, sign a petition, pick up a brochure and/or become a volunteer. The Neighbourhood Tent is pleased to welcome back, again this year, Hillside’s Green Team. Shade Tents Our Government knows how important arts and culture are to the vitality of our communities and the growth of our economy. This is why we are pleased to invest in events like the Hillside Community Festival of Guelph that give Canadians access to our arts and heritage and allow them to take part in the life of their community. By presenting a wide array of genres performed by artists from across Canada and around the world, the Festival expands the musical horizons of residents and tourists alike and offers them unforgettable cultural experiences. Share the shade: one of the two shade tents in front of the main stage is reserved for individuals either with a disability or requiring shade because of “special circumstances” (seniors, pregnant women, parents with infants). First-come, firstserved. It is recommended you arrive early as seating and access to the shade tent may be limited, and spaces cannot be reserved. Solar-Powered Stage Hillside showcases solar technology by presenting spoken word and acoustic performances on a solar-powered stage. The Sun Stage promotes the use of sustainable energy alternatives, thanks to the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA). Visit the solar trailer near the Sun Stage to learn more about this renewable energy resource. The Honourable James Moore 10 Celebrating music and community photos: julian katz Access Support Open Friday 5 pm to 10 pm, Saturday/Sunday 10 am to 10 pm For the third year, with the cooperation of the City of Guelph, a water tanker filled with City of Guelph tap water is on site. The water is tested throughout the weekend to ensure its safety. Festival-goers can have their containers filled free-of-charge by volunteers. Hillside stainless-steel water bottles are available all weekend at cost ($12.50 each, taxes included) at the Merch Tent. Waste Management Hillside works hard to ensure that our waste collection system minimizes the amount of garbage headed for the landfill site. Please don’t throw your plastic dishes away – put them in the dish boxes provided (see Dishwashing and Reusable Dishes, page 9). To make sorting simple, bins are grouped together: recyclables, waste, compost and dishes. Check the waste disposal sign posted at each container, then sort your waste accordingly. Green Fund A team of Hillside Volunteers will be asking for donations for our Green Fund. Started in 2005, funds were initially raised for the building of the Living Roof on the main stage. Purchases this year include trees that were planted along the Green Trail. Hillside has made a commitment to continue greening initiatives onsite. Each patron contribution is matched dollar for dollar by the festival from its own reserves to acquire new green technology or equipment. Find out more about our greening projects from the Green Team booth at the Neighbourhood Tent or from a Green Team volunteer who will be roaming the site. Endowment Fund Hillside wants to sustain itself for now and into the future. Last year, we announced the establishment of the Hillside Festival Endowment Fund in partnership with The Guelph Community Foundation. This endowment will, over time, provide ongoing sustainable funding support for the festival and will also be used to support ongoing and expanded community projects. Donations to the fund will be endowed with The Guelph Community Foundation, and income will be directed annually to the festival. For more information about how you can make a lasting contribution contact the Hillside Festival or The Guelph Community Foundation at guelphcf.ca. Celebrating music and community more than music Thirst Quenchers Water Tanker The Access Support Tent is located beside the accessible parking area, next door to the First Aid Tent. Individuals requiring additional support during the festival are welcome to stop by and talk to an Access Support Krew volunteer. We provide the following: • Accessible parking. Available to those with a registered accessible parking pass ONLY. • American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting services, available at the Access Support Tent during regular hours of operation, roaming through the festival site and during certain events. Please visit the Access Support Tent if you require ASL/English interpreter services. (To pre-book ASL Services, please contact the Access Support Coordinator at the Hillside Office at 519-763-6396.) • Large print maps and performer schedules available. • One-to-one support. Negotiating best pathways to stages, vendors, workshop sites and accessible washrooms. • Shade Tent. Accessible seating is available under the shade tent, located on the grounds of the main stage. This is offered on a first-come, first-served basis to people with special needs. It is recommended that people arrive early, as seating may be limited and spaces cannot be reserved. This area is non-smoking. • Shade and water for working animals provided at the Access Support Tent. • Wheel chairs available for loan on a limited basis. To sign out a wheelchair, please bring a piece of photo I.D. such as, driver’s license, an LCBO card or passport. During peak hours, wheelchair loans will be limited to two hours at a time.
