PROMOTION THE MOBILITY ADVANTAGE As transportation solutions go, business aviation is, well, a no-brainer. Here’s why: The speed at which an organization can interact face-to-face with customers or seize new revenue opportunities can mean the difference between success and failure—and few tools available to companies give executives the ability to manage their travel time and increase productivity as much as business aviation. As Windquest Group President Dick Devos puts it, “Business aviation is magic when people and time count most.” Business aircraft are equipped with all the technology needed to make them a highly efficient office in the sky and keep passengers connected throughout their flight. Bear in mind, too, that business aircraft have access to about ten times as many airports around the country as scheduled airlines. Arrive at an airport minutes before departure time and land closer to your destination. No long security lines and no waiting for baggage. All told, the time saved using business aviation can easily amount to hours worth of productivity. BUYER’S MARKET Companies and individual entrepreneurs who may be contemplating business aviation for their transportation solutions, as well as current users who may be considering upgrading to a different airplane—a larger cabin, perhaps, or an aircraft that can fly longer routes nonstop—will find no shortage of innovative models to satisfy their regional and global needs. Of the many choices of business aircraft, one of the most widely anticipated is the Legacy 450 from Embraer Executive Jets. What makes this mid-light-class jet so special is its combination of speed, range, cabin comfort—and price point. At about $16.57 million, it’s a lot of airplane. In fact, it is virtually identical to the larger Legacy 500, the only difference being a fuselage that’s 3 feet, 6 inches shorter. “Our vision for the Legacy 450 and Legacy 500 was to repeat the success of the Phenom Citation Latitude BY TONY VELOCCI 100 and Phenom 300, two of the mostdelivered business aircraft since their introductions in 2008 and 2009, respectively,” says Embraer Executive Jets President and CEO Marco Túlio Pellegrini. “Just as the Phenom airplanes were revolutionary for the light jet segment of business aviation, the 400/500 design will bring true innovation to the middle categories.” This clean-sheet design, which was developed in parallel with the Legacy 500, comfortably seats seven to nine passengers, and is the only mid-light jet featuring a six-foot-tall standup cabin with a flat floor. Moreover, its 6-foot, 10-inch cross section is the largest in its class. The Legacy 450’s cruising speed is a bestin-class Mach 0.83. When flying high-speed cruise at 43,000 feet, the aircraft is about 40 knots faster than its closest competitor. Carrying four passengers, it has a range of 2,575 nautical miles (nm). Maximum cruising altitude is 45,000 feet, well above commercial airline traffic and most weather systems that could otherwise be troublesome. BUSINESS AVIATION 2 PROMOTION To help passengers experience less highaltitude fatigue on missions lasting up to six hours, the pressurization system keeps cabin altitude at 6,000 feet. Each pair of facing chairs converts into a virtually flat berth, and the aircraft offers the largest cabin windows in its class, with a window positioned next to each seat. Cabin management and in-flight entertainment is courtesy of Honeywell’s Ovation Select, which offers a full high-definition video system and allows for control of entertainment, communications, lights and temperature via side-ledge-mounted units, wireless handheld remotes or a galley touchscreen. The system also can interface with high-speed satellite communications and a variety of consumer electronics. Carry-on luggage and bulk baggage capacity have long been design priorities for Embraer Executive Jets, and the Legacy 450 embodies this design philosophy. Storage space is plentiful, with an in-flight accessible baggage compartment to supplement an external one. In terms of size, both are best in class. The Legacy 450 is the first mid-light jet equipped with full fly-by-wire technology and side-stick flight controls—a plus for passengers because digital flight controls produce a smoother ride. They also enhance safety and performance, in addition to reducing pilot workload. The cockpit features state-of-the-art Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion avionics, including four 15.1-inch high-resolution LCD displays, synthetic enhanced vision and graphical flight-planning capability. Embraer will start delivering Legacy 450s to customers in the fourth quarter of this year. than 21 feet in length and 77 inches wide. With its flat floor and six feet of cabin height, the airplane is by far the most spacious of any previous Citation jet, with dimensions found in larger, more expensive business aircraft. LED wash lights in the ceilings, chair bases and sidewall bottoms make the cabin feel larger than it measures. Even the ten windows—well positioned for outside visibility when standing or sitting—are 30% larger to allow more ambient light to flood the cabin. Cessna’s exclusive wireless cabin management system puts passengers in complete control of cabin functions, such as temperature and lighting, on their personal electronic devices. Music and videos can be loaded to the media server and broadcast to individual Embraer Legacy 450 devices or through the aircraft sound system. THE VALUE OF VERSATILITY Sometimes a business aircraft is more than just 3 BUSINESS AVIATION Citation Latitude PROMOTION The Citation Latitude is exactly what Cessna customers asked for: a jet that offers the highest reliability and operating efficiency, as well as a larger, more comfortable cabin, according to Kriya Shortt, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Textron. “The marketplace is savvy, and the way people do business is changing,” she says. “We listened to our customers and took all of their input into consideration as we began to design the Citation Latitude. The result is a product whose total value proposition is what truly differentiates it in the marketplace.” In late September, Cessna concluded a 28-day, 39-airport coast-to-coast demonstration tour that gave prospective U.S. customers the opportunity to experience the Latitude. Additional tours are planned for Europe, the Middle East and Asia later this year. The response on the recent U.S. tour was “a resounding ‘wow!’—especially at this price,” Shortt says. Among the first customers to take delivery of the Latitude in August was Aircraft Management Group of Pit tsburgh, PA. “What’s appealing is that it has the amenities of larger aircraft but the flexibility to fly into short fields with transcontinental range,” says John Sieckowski, Aircraft Management Group president. “That appeals to a lot of customers.” GLOBAL COVERAGE NetJets, which pioneered the concept of fractional ownership in the mid-1980s, is another Citation Latitude customer. “Its short-field performance, utility, price point and cabin features that you would typically associate with a larger, more expensive airplane—most notably its Citation Latitude impressive size and flat floor—will make it a very strong addition to our fleet,” says Patrick Gallagher, executive vice president of sales and marketing for NetJets. A Berkshire Hathaway company, NetJets has 25 Citation Latitudes on order, with options for 125 more. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2016. NetJets operates a fleet of more than 700 jets of all types around the world, and the Citation Latitude aircraft it ordered will become part of the NetJets Signature Series. All such aircraft are customized from design through production and include advanced in-flight entertainment systems, custom cabin designs, and advanced cockpit and cabin technologies to ensure maximum safety, reliability and operating efficiency. Signature Series jets are also equipped with the Tempus IC lightweight, compact telemedicine device that uses the airplane’s onboard satellite communications capability to connect to a doctor on the ground in the event of a medical emergency. NetJets customers own or lease time on a specific serial-numbered aircraft, but they Citation Latitude galley, looking aft 5 BUSINESS AVIATION utilize the entire fleet of aircraft and have the opportunity to exchange or otherwise upgrade to other aircraft types in the NetJets U.S. fleet that may better satisfy a specific trip’s requirements. By virtue of the fleet’s size, some 30% to 40% of NetJets flights will be upgraded on a typical day, according to Gallagher. “Some of the best customer feedback we get is when we introduce surprise upgrades, and our feedback has been off the charts. With the Citation Latitude, we will be able to provide those customers in the midsize fleet with an aircraft that is more comfortable and more capable than they have seen before,” he says. UNPARALLELED FLEXIBILITY The beauty of fractional ownership is that it requires a lower initial investment. When NetJets introduced it, the concept brought flexibility to a wide range of air travel needs, and it has increased in versatility since. Essentially, companies purchase a share of an aircraft— a fraction of its annual use—and share the ownership and operating costs with thousands of other fractional owners. Typically the baseline is 800 hours annually, with the smallest available share being a one-sixteenth share or 50 hours per year. For many operators—including thousands of companies around the world— fractional ownership is the ideal transportation solution, because it helps companies and individual entrepreneurs avoid owning excess capacity and tying up more of their capital than is required. The 127 million miles that NetJets flew in 2014 was twice the total combined mileage of its competitors. NetJets has been pre-selling shares in the Citation Latitude for just a few weeks, and nearly a dozen customers have put down deposits, sight unseen, based on the aircraft’s cabin size and its ability to accomplish a variety of missions, particularly ones that call for the use of relatively short runways, according Space in a class of its own. This is the future of midsize jets. It's the first in its class with an unbelievable 6ft tall cabin and flat floor. The business end of the HondaJet—the cockpit—is equipped with the most sophisticated glass flight deck available in any light business jet; a Hondacustomized Garmin G3000 next-generation, all-glass avionics system composed of three 14-inch landscape-format displays; and dual touchscreen controllers. Honda Aircraft expects to begin deliveries to customers before the end of 2015. IN GOOD COMPANY HondaJet to Gallagher. “This is an airplane that will appeal to all, whether they’re corporate clients or leisure travelers,” he says. HondaJet excels in that category, too. It is the fastest, highest-flying and most fuel-efficient The Legac y 450, Citation Latitude and HondaJet are just three of the most innovative and widely heralded new business aircraft coming to market. There are others as well, but what they all have in common INNOVATION IN FLIGHT While business aviation has progressed far beyond the original model of individual owners who flew their own small airplanes to meetings and sales calls, there are still about 15,000 owner-operators across the country. For those individuals, and smaller companies as well, there is another widely anticipated aircraft that will soon come to market: Honda Aircraft Co.’s HondaJet. The four-to-six-passenger airplane will be FAA-certified for either single- or two-pilot operation. The HondaJet is arguably the most technologically innovative business aircraft in its class. In recognition of its superior design, Honda Aircraft Co. President and CEO Michimasa Fujino received the 2014 Clarence L. (Kelly) Johnson Aerospace Vehicle Design and Development Award, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions in the design and development of advanced aircraft and/or spacecraft. In the case of the HondaJet, the key innovations include a patented over-the-wing engine mount configuration. This unique positioning, combined with the use of a composite fuselage and natural laminar flow wing and nose, dramatically reduces drag and results in a larger cabin volume with less vibration and generous passenger legroom. Multi-axis seats slide, shift and lock without the restraint of a track. The configuration also allows for the largest baggage capacity in the light business jet category.
