Heading a soccer ball, nailing a blistering baseball pitch and driving the lane in a basketball game make for some exciting sports moments. But for young athletes who play sports without eye protection, these same thrilling moves can mean eye injuries and permanent vision impairment. According to Prevent Blindness America, nearly 90 percent of all sports eye injuries are preventable. Yet for young athletes, sports eye protection may be low on a coach or parent’s priority list. Here are some sports eye injury stats that we hope will change that: • For people under 40 years of age, eye injuries are the leading cause of loss of vision and blindness • 43% of all sports eye injuries occur in children under the age of 15 • Every 13 minutes a US emergency room treats a sports-related eye injury • 32% of these emergency room visits result in a permanent loss of sight "Parents are often quick to ensure their children are equipped with helmets, knee and elbow pads and even mouth guards. However, many fail to address the needs of eye protection for the same players," says Paul Berman, O.D., F.A.A.O., and the Chairman for The Coalition to Prevent Sports Eye Injuries. Many organizations have supported the need to encourage eye protection during sports. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Optometric Association and Prevent Blindness America all endorse sports eye protection as the most effective way to reduce sports related vision loss. Old South Optometry wants to educate their families about the prevention of Sports Eye Injuries. Eye protection is quickly becoming a normal part of sports gear nationwide. Let’s help young athletes avoid the sidelines; add sports eye protection to their game!
