Temple Israel of Riverhead June 2016 Bulletin Volume #22 Iyar/Sivan 5776 Issue #5 490 Northville Tpke., P.O. Box 1531, Riverhead, New York 11901-0954 Email: TempleIsraelRH@optonline.net www.TempleisraelRiverhead.org Temple Office: (631) 727-3191 Rabbi’s Study: (631) 369-5997 Rabbi Michael Rascoe (713) 208-0555 RABBI’S REFLECTIONS Oy, was that a Graduation! In This Issue Rabbi Update 3 Speaker Program 4&5 Annual Meeting 6 Shavuot 6 Bar Mitzvah of Joshua Kaplan 7 Shabbat on the Beach 8 We look forward to graduation. It marks school’s completion, our formal education. We graduate from somewhere or something. We stand robed, hooded, and capped, and receive a diploma attesting to our intellectual accomplishments, the exRabbi Michael Rascoe pansion of our knowledge, the size of our intellect. We have “proven” our cultural literacy, read the world’s great books. Yet in the last hundred years, one of the world’s greatest culturally-refined nations started two world wars, and sent people to death camps (Continued on page 2) See inside for... Information about Rabbi Rascoe’s progress, and summer events at TI. Temple Israel of Riverhead 1 June 2016 (Rabbi—continued from page 1) and crematoria. We watched university graduates encourage genocide, arm weapons of mass destruction, and use them without compunction. Developing a philosophy of life is no easy task. Questing after God is a lifelong pursuit. One cannot find the answer simply. Not in television, nor in the movies, though maybe in certain comic strips–if you see them as a starting point. The best solutions entail no easy answers, which is what we want. These answers require sacrifice, searching, and responsibility. We see an upswing in spiritual questing and a downswing in affiliation. It seems like the modern person asks God, “Why are things in the world so messed-up?” and, “What have you done for me lately?” God’s answer? Silence, deafening silence. The problem: We do not search in the correct places. Worse, we lose no sleep over it. The search for God is not easy–it comes with strings and no guarantees. But if we are bastions of honesty and decency in a world that needs more of both, then we truly learn the lessons of life, and probably are more spiritual than those who look for it in easy places. Instead of robes, caps, and hoods, those of us in shul on Shavuot wrap tallitot around us, wear kippot (yarmulkes, skullcaps) on our heads, and explore the possibilities and lessons that Shavuot teaches about real life. We glimpse the answer by examining the other name for graduation: commencement. To commence means to start. Commencement really begins life. One can receive all “A’s” in school and flunk life. Real life involves more than amassing knowledge–it demands character and ethics, conduct and caring, deeds and compassion. God’s way to ensure success in life demands covenant and commandments. Following this path requires a different ceremony– a confirmation of character. Join us. You may find that by the ensuing High Holidays you will be better equipped to ask questions of God and yourself, for you will have begun the important stage of life–the beginning of finding out about real life. Hag same-ah, happy holiday. Shavuot is our commencement. At school, we learn about intellectual accomplishments and academic discipline. At Sinai, we practice deeds and caring. At school, we learn to be smart; at Sinai, to be wise. At school we expand our intellects; at Sinai the amount of concern for other people and the world around us. We realize that Sinai forms our core curriculum; school our electives. Commandments and covenant in life teach character and compassion better than book learning in a classroom. Temple Israel of Riverhead 2 June 2016 An update on Rabbi Rascoe Rabbi has returned home from the hospital and is recovering well. Fireworks Painting: A fun project! Start by cutting a toilet paper roll into 2″ long fringes. Open up the fringe so it sits flat against the table, and place the roll on a paper plate that has been covered in a layer of tempera or acrylic paint. For our fireworks we used four rolls/plates – red, white, blue and a glittery mix of all three colors. Enjoy! Guess what? I met Cree Cicchino at one of my dance competitions! She is a star of the hit Nickelodeon show, Game Shakers. She plays Babe Carano on the show. Cree is very nice and friendly. It was so exciting to meet someone from TV! She acts and dances. You can see her hip-hop videos on YouTube. She is an amazing dancer. By Sarah Temple Israel of Riverhead 21 June 2016 Temple Israel of Riverhead NON-PROFIT ORG.
