The Ruckus is to choppers what the Civic was to hot rods. A scooter seemed so rinky-dink compared to a regular street bike, which has so much more power and wow factor. But when the chance to ride a Ruckus came, The Ruckus may have a tough urban look, but underneath it’s full of advanced Honda features. Like a liquid-cooled 49cc engine. And an effortless electric starter. In keeping with Honda’s reputation for reliability, much of the Ruckus requires no maintenance. Including its V-Matic belt-drive transmission and more.Amazing fuel-efficiency. Text: CR; Pics: Moto Sumisura 26 27 t is curious that a company like Harley, which customers have always been the “Number 1” when modifying their bikes, has not been taking the lead. But it is still curious that BMW - a serious and sober brand that no one imagined that one day entered the game of the customized bikes- has been able to subtract prominence to Milwaukee in front of the international media using their own weapons . 28 29 And the idea of giving copies of the R-Nine-T to the most influential customizers of each country to modify them as they please has been a mastestrock that Harley have never done, even with their best dealers, and it has not only served to catch the attention of the press, but also to grasp new ideas that will surely in the future may lead to other model series. 30 31 Franco Augello, the owner of Moto Sumisura, is one of the customizers that BMW has given a Nine-T, as the old German boxer are his passion... and his specialty (see Café Racers No. 26) since he decided to leave his profession and devote himself exclusively to customize his clients and friends bikes in his studio in Vigevano, a small, quiet village near Milan. 32 33 After carefully studying the historical reasons that encouraged BMW to launch the Nine-T model, which, to be exact, we should talk in terms of “concept”, his personal vision was a machine with a strong industrial aesthetic as retro-futuristic that Jules Verne himself could have imagined it for some of his Sci-Fi books, after that Franco and Inge, his partner had been stripped it of its original body, and substituted it for a long, angular almost coffin gas tank, fabricated from mild steel with brass inserts because Franco wanted to experiment with these materials and brushed aluminum, in honor to the trip around Africa of the famous French writer who inspired the Steampunk movement. 34 35 “ Franco’s vision of the R-Nine-T is a machine with such a retro-futuristic aesthetic that Jules Verne himself could have imagined it for some of his Sci-Fi books ” 36 37 But not all changes made to the Nine-T are in sight. Under the body, or rather, beneath that comfortable seat with upholstery diamond is hidden one new subframe design in which Franco has added a luggage rack and a brushed steel case in which the battery and the electrical system is housed. The OEM fenders have been replaced by two lovely aluminum pieces that seems designed in a wind tunnel. The rear is subject directly to the single sided swingarm, so that is very attached to the tire and swivels with it. 38 39 Franco believes that the most insignificant details in a woman’s night dress are what make it stand out from the crowd, and that he put his five senses so with his bikes happen the same. So for that reason we see that the watches are covered with a brushed metal casing, that something as insignificant as some in40 dicators has already become four pieces of careful design, or an old boxer valve cover has been served to create a headlight. In this application the illumination comes from tiny L.E.D bulbs hidden within the cooling fins... all elements have been designed and manufactured to combine beauty and functionality. 41 “ Moto Sumisura is one of the workshops that BMW gave a Nine-T, as the old German boxer are the passion of Franco Augello, its owner... and his specialty ” 42 43 We knew for some time that in Moto Sumisura they build some of the most beautiful BMWs on the roads of Europe. What we cannot imagine is how they may surprise us after creating this Steampunk Nine-T. 44 45 Hazan Motorworks Pure steampunk style When you walk through the door of Hazan Motorworks, you find a kind of goldsmith workshop in which lie some of the most beautiful bikes ever built... Text: XTB; Photo: DR 48 49 ax Hazan, Max for friends, is one of the few builders whose bikes are considered true works of art, to the point that many of his creations are exhibited as such in galleries around the world. And the work of this New Yorker is one of the best recreations we have seen (in elegant version, of course) of this Steampunk movement that every day has more followers. Jules Verne or H.G. Wells imagined the future world with vehicles with steam engines, but that does not stop that motorcycles that are manufactured in Hazan Motorworks are one of the most beautiful and well done we’ve ever seen. 50 51 The first motorcycle he built, a Malibu gallery which had seen the pictures in Instagran borrowed it to expose it. When it was coming down the truck, a guy who liked it so much passed by that he bought it before the motorcycle had entered the gallery. That first customer was none other than Felix Baumgartner; the mad from Red Bull who parachuted himself from outer space. Max could take advantage of that to get publicity but he did not tell anyone, which says a lot about the kind of person he is. 52 53 “ Before starting a project, search an engine you like, and then build the rest of the bike around 54 ” 55 Another art gallery, this time from Switzerland, was interested in his second motorbike, Royal Enfield. When they told him that they wanted to buy it Max asked without thinking 100 grand, and to his surprise, the same day they confirmed that they would take it, so like you can see, people are really impressed with the bikes of this old former boat-builder who worked in an old brick warehouse of Green Point (Brooklyn, NYC), and he sailed into motorcycle building literally by accident—a severe motocross mishap stranded him on his living-room couch for three months, staring at a beach cruiser bicycle. When mobility returned, he installed an engine in the beach cruiser. After scaring himself riding it on bicycle tires, he decided to build a ‘proper’ custom motorcycle. 56 57 58 59 “ Build right from the ground up, but even if it means more work, more time and more effort to complete it, you know that the result is always better than when aftermarket parts are used 60 ” 61 His next creation was a Harley Ironhead. According to Max himself, before starting a project, search an engine you like, and then build the rest of the bike around. He likes to build right from the 62 ground up, but even if it means more work, more time and more effort to complete it, you know that the result is always better than when aftermarket parts are used. 63 One of the main hallmarks of Hazan Motorworks are the wooden seats. Not because it comes from his designer and shipbuilder time (well, a little) but because he believes that one of the most beautiful objects that have been designed 64 throughout history are the wooden Chris Craft Rivier boats that Hollywood popularized in the early 50 ‘s. A nod to the past that we also find in the tires, almost always the same as those used in cars early last century. 65 “ All Hazan Motorworks’ bikes have some clean and well proportioned lines that not all builders are able to archive 66 ” 67 Currently Max lives in Los Angeles, and since is on the West Coast he has been proposed to live more relaxed and build just two bikes per year (oops, meant two “works of art”), which is a pity for us. Of course, if the two are like the Musket Hazan you are going to see in our next report, the wait will be worth it. 68 69 Musket Hazan Maxwell Hazan needs no introduction. It is one of the few builders that we could say without fear of contradiction which it is one of the best builders of the world... T e x t : X T B ; P i c s : C o u rt e s y 72 of Hazan Motorworks 73 M 74 ax has talent. A lot of talent, and that gives him the freedom to always do whatever he wants. One of his last whims fulfilled it last year, when he decided to use a Musket V-Twin engine to one of the most spectacular and beautiful bikes we have seen in many years: The Musket Hazam V-twin. 75 The “Musket Hazam” is a project that Max had planned to build even before turning to make motorcycles professionally. He always liked the aesthetics of the Royal engines, and when he discovered that Aniket Vardhan, a settled Indian engineer in USA, manufactures handmade V-Twin engines based on Royal Enfield Bullet, he 76 knew that someday he had to build a bike around this mechanical gem. And the day came when a client open to all suggestions went through the door of Hazan Motorworks in same time that he had found out that Aniket had in sale a newly completed engine... it was the opportunity he was waiting. 77 “ Someone should propose that the Musket Hazam was exhibited in any room of the MoMA in New York 78 ” 79 Max began to work on the project as he always does. Instead of drawing sketches or make designs with a computer program, he prefers to get the engine up to a workbench, put a wheel in front of it and one behind, and from there he starts to draw the lines set to actu- 80 al size. It may seem a somewhat primitive system, but Max likes it because it allows you to see how it works and how the pieces fit together in the progresses. But above all for the pleasure to discover how the bike step by step materializes from nowhere. The V-Twin Vardhan are of considerable size, but they are so beautiful that would have been a madness that Max would not have given it the prominence it deserves. For this reason he built a frame with steel pipes of different diameter, whose forms are designed so that when we look at the bike that first thing that catch our attention is the V-Twin. This was also one of the reasons why Max send to make in chromate all the parts of the bike instead of paint, because it seems that everything was almost invisible, giving the feeling that the engine float in the air. 81 But a motorcycle, however minimal it may be, is not only an engine and two wheels. In the front end of the “Musket Hazm” we find beautiful Parallelograms forks with two small shocks hidden behind the headlight. The spoke wheels, which are among the few parts that are not manufactured in Hazam, wear BF Goodrich Silvertown car tires and have no brakes, Max installed as the only brake that stops the bike in the transmission. A system that works very well, thanks to that it has made the tires look more beautiful. Another detail that he has taken special care is laying pipes and cables. Nobody likes them in sight, but since they are indispensable we need to hide them, and if you cannot at least try to have a minimum of aesthetics. So Max used an accelerator internal route, and made that nice hand shifter with the clutch lever that allowed him to leave completely clean the handlebars from accessories. The entire electrical system, including the ignition and Antigravity battery is hidden under the engine or inside the fuel tank, which like the fender is aluminum. That sounds like simple, but for Max it was one of the most difficult tasks which he had to face. 82 83 “ 84 Wheels, tires and headlights are the only parts bought. The rest are handmade ” 85 As you have already seen in the Hazam Motorworks article you have in this issue, the wood is the preferred material for Max to manufacture the seats. Something that has become a kind of signature for the house. That from the “Musket Hazm” differs from the rest by being something more comfortable. It is made of walnut wood, and it had a perfect finish that was covered with more than 15 layers of lacquer. The result is a sober and elegant piece that looks like something out of one of those Chris-Craft Riviera boats from the 50’s that are now an object of worship. With about 55hp, a compression ratio of 6.5: 1, and its “square” tires, you mustn’t have to be very smart to realize that rolling at high speed is not between Max’s plans when it started to build the “Musket Hazam”. However, the Aniket Vardhan’s 980cc engine works with the precision of a Swiss watch, and as we said at the beginning, it has served to make one of the most spectacular and beautiful bikes we have seen in many years. 86 87 Ducati First Ridet: I WANT TO BE LIKE YOU Scrambler 62 The little brother always imitates the older one, he wants to be like him. Imitate their gestures, their speech, and even dress similarly. It happens in all families, and in the Ducati Scrambler things didn’t have to be different... T e x t : C R , P i c s : D u c at i 90 91 o realize this s you only have to look at the features of the new Scrambler Sixty2 that Borgo Panigale presented at the Barcelona press. A presentation that took us by one of the most modern capitals, and more Scrambler style throughout Europe. 92 93 At the press conference we had explained that the bike is more sweet, light and urban than her older sister, which makes it a perfect vehicle for those novice drivers who do not want to start their career in the world of 2 wheels with a small displacement motorcycle. Something we could see for ourselves since we left the hotel, which was fully Ducati Scrambler themed, towards the beach area. 94 95 At first glance between the Sixty 2 and the 800, there are little differences in the color and small details like the fuel tank, which it hasn´t interchangeable side covers, the top tree, the termination of escape notice, which in it is black 96 matte, or the rear tire being thinner, which can be an advantage because it is easier to drive in curvy roads. The driving position and height are exactly the same as on the 800, so get with your both feet on the ground it’s no problem, and how the distance between the tips of the handlebar allows anyone, regardless of his stature, feel comfortable on the bike, it almost seems that you have done the Sixty2 to measure. 97 But driving, things are different. As you press the start button and the V-Twin comes to life a different sound shows. Let it go taking temperature while you put the helmet and gloves, and then meshes first gear, release the clutch while touring the accelera98 tor and let go picking up speed. The Sixty2 is “just” a 400 and it is noticeable, but the power delivery is also much or sweeter than the 800cc Scrambler, which means that what they told us in the press was true. With the Sixty2 those who were thinking about buying a Scrambler but ended up settling because they worried what they had read about the sudden touch of throttle control can now rest easy because the “small” is not only very soft, but being something lighter than the 800, it brake, accelerate, dodging, and allows fiddling between city traffic with amazing ease. But it is best that all these qualities as “citizens” are maintained when you go rolling the road because the bike has enough power to overtake trucks and cars without any problems 99 If the Scrambler 800 in any of its versions is a fun bike to ride, the Sixty2 is no slouch. In “happy” driving it’s easy to get into the curves and remove it even more by turning the throttle, without any effort to place it at the entrance to the next, knock down ... it’s almost as if dancing a Waltz. 100 101 The only negative point we could find is that the heat from the exhaust pipe can be unbearable when summer comes. Moreover, the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 seemed to us a very balanced bike for novice drivers, and especially recommended for all those who will use it to make small breaks a day and like to roll through the city to go working with that style that Maxi Scooter would never have. 102 103 As all the Scrambler, the Sixty2 can also be customized to your liking thanks to the huge list of options and extras that Ducati offers us: parts, helmets, clothes... everything you need to fully enjoy the spirit Scrambler. Or what is the same ... “The Land of Joy”. 104 105 PatinaBreaking Bagger the rules This Harley which has an unkempt appearance is Brad Konar’s guinea pig, the owner of Barnyard Baggers. At first he thought to turn it into a beautiful and shiny Bagger as it does for its customers, but that would have been too easy... Text: XTB; Pics: DR 108 109 ou may be good at your job, your company may do well, and even the relationship with your customers almost always ends in a long and good friendship. But the routine is not always a good counselor. Humans need change, test, and experiment new routine to not suffocate them and to skip the rules from time to time... Or at least do different things for them to be an exhaust valve. 110 111 “ 112 People don’t know if it’s old or new. It’s just fun ” 113 Brad works lots of hours a week, and in the workshop that he has in Lowell (Indiana), are constantly arriving bikes from every corner of the United States. Calling himself like it’s called, Banyard Baggers, it’s not hard to guess the type of motorcycle in which he is specialized are, usually, clean, shiny, glitzy, and very striking machines, so one day he decided to take a Road King 2009 that was accumulating dust in the shop waiting for someone to become infatuated 114 with it, and do something different that would allow him to “break” with the daily routine. From the first time he was sure he wanted “a farm-fresh big-wheel rustic hot rod” with modern technology that would be for him. That meant that not having to finish it on a specific date he might does it unhurried, but the truth is that he got the same pressure because as he advanced more with the project, he most wanted to end it and go hit the road. 115 The truth is that with his rocker boxes Panhead type on Twin Cam 108 inch S&S cylinders, the worn blue Cadillac paint, and the spectacular “Imperial” wheels which were provided to Brad by the “smug” boys Metalsport, it’s hard to believe that the bike that we are seeing it’s a Road King instead of an old FL Banyard Baggers that was modified with modern pieces, because the result of the aging work that it has undergone is perfect. As is normal in any Bagger, the front tire is one of the first pieces that capture our attention. This is 26” and is accompanied by a brake rotor with the same design and a Hawg Halters six pistons chromed caliper. 116 117 “ The bike was very successful in all the bike shows that Brad took it ” 118 119 Things were progressing as the plan that Brad had set. Meanwhile, in Gary Stroud Racing they were improving the V-Twin with a Tech Cycles clutch and a Cyclone open primary drive of the same brand, S&S cylinders and heads, Exotic Choppers exhaust, and the D & M velocity stack which looks out on the right side of the engine, in Barnyad’s team were responsible to extend forward the frame rake at 40º to compensate the greater diameter of the front wheel relative to the original one from the Road King. Air suspensions Native Customs and Air Ride Arnott were also mount- 120 ed, and finally made a selection of aftermarket components to dress it. Brad used the “Patina Bagger” for a couple of weeks and led it to some Bikes shows in which was quite successful. Jack Lane, a friend of him, liked the bike and kept insisting Brad to sell it, and it happened what had to happen... he sold it! At the end of the day what he needed was a hobby to help him cope with the daily routine, and if he ever feels overwhelmed because of the pressure, then he could always find another bike. 121 General Bike>Patina Road King Owner>Jack Lane Base Model>H-D Road King Year>2009 Builder> Barnyard Baggers Time>4 Months Country>USA Página Web>BarnyardBaggers.com Engine Manufacturer>H-D Type>Twin Cam Cylinders>S&S Heads>S&S Rocker Boxes>Panhead Displacement>108ci Carbs>EFI Air cleaner>D&M Velocity Stack Exhaust>Exotic Choppers Primary Drive>Tech Cycles Cyclone open Clutch>Tech Cycles Rebuild> Gary Stroud Racing Chassis & Accessories Frame>H-D modified Rake>44º Fork>Native Customs Air Ride Triple Trees>Hawg Halters Headlight>Bad Dad Nacelle Handlebar> Misfit Brawler Bar Hand controls>H-D Nostalgic Gauges>Dakota Digital Front Wheel> Metalsports Wheels Imperial Size>3.5 x 26” Brake rotor> Metalsports Wheels Imperial Caliper>Hawg Halters 6 pistons Tire>120/50-26 Front Fender>Native FL Style Gas Tank> H-D Gas Cap>Misfit Dash Panel>Bagger Nation Oil Tank>H-D Foot controls>Arlen Ness Seat>Vos custom Swing arm>H-D Rear Suspension>Arnott Air Ride Rear Wheel> Metalsports Wheels Imperial Size>5.5 x 18” Brake>H-D Tire>200/50-18 Fender>Bad Dad Saddlebags>Bad dad Taillight>Custom Dynamics Paint>Brad Konar (Barnyard Baggers) Pinstriping>Jody Clark 122 123 Moto OH! Barcelona 124 After eight years without enjoying a Hall of bike in one of the European cities with more bikes per capita across Europe, the Moto OH! returns to Barcelona with the aim of being an essential event in the annual calendar... Text and P h o t o s : P i l a r G á rg o l e s 125 More than 25 thousand visitors, 94 exhibitors representing more than 300 brands, 1.600 motorcycles tests, and over 400 participants in driving courses are figures that show a very positive balance that supports the need for this event to maintain its continuity. And is that the organization of the Moto Oh! Barcelona had set a target to gather under the same roof for a weekend, major brands in the industry, so that fans could admire in live all these developments that begin to reach their official dealers and we had only seen so far in magazines. 126 127 “ 128 25 thousand visitors, 94 exhibitors representing more than 300 brands, 1.600 motorcycles tests performed, and 400 participants in driving courses are very positive figures ” 129 A goal that has more than fulfilled, thanks to a large and well-studied program of complementary activities related to the world of motorcycling, in which fans of a city that takes ingrained in its DNA the passion for the world of 2 wheels like no other, were able to catch up in terms of developments in accessories and equipment, try the newest models in test circuits for motorcycle and scooter, or on outings around the city that organized Indian, Victory, Yamaha, BMW and some other brand present at the event, or enjoy the creations of some important custom builders... in short: a place of Culture Bike transmission. 130 131 Special Bikes Cult I wanted to leave for the final the room dedicated to custom Builders not only because I have a special affection to it, but also because I identify 100% with this very singular way of understanding the world of motorcycling. Clothed this time under the mantle of Harley-Davidson, who held the role of main sponsor, but organized by Special Bikes Cult, whose leaders remain committed to inform the public the exciting world of the “special” motorcycle through this event organized throughout the year in different cities, and that in Barcelona we showed a selection of machines of different styles made by important professionals of the Catalan custom scene, accompanied by some of the Sportster participants in the Battle of Kings contest that the Motor Company has organized among its official dealer. 132 133 The only complaint that someone could put to this edition of the SBC (and stating that it is intended as a constructive criticism) is that it left you somehow confused finding under the gigantic brand logo Milwaukee, who presided over the stand and it was seen almost from anywhere in the pavilion, motorcycles Triumph, Kawasaki, Yamaha, BMW, Suzuki, and even a spectacular Ural Café Racer with sidecar, but also had a Special Bikes Cult logo to indicate the reason that at the stand were bikes from different brands. One it’s said, I would like to emphasize that in view of the astonished faces of all those who approached the stand, the idea of seeing together many custom bikes of different styles not only liked the public, but also achieved the objective to discover many people who did not know that in Spain we also know how to transform motorcycles ... and we do very well. 134 135 Born Motor Co, Corb Motorcycles, DePalma Cycles, Easy Rider Girona, Espacio H-D Barcelona, Free Kustom Cycles, Fuel Bespoke Motorcycles, HD Shop, H-D Makinostra, H-D Tarraco, H-D Zaragoza, Italo Motor, LA Motorcycles, La Sal Café Racers, Maverick Motorcycles, Mercado Libre Cus- 136 tom Cycles, Monotronomo Café Racers, Morlako Kustom, Moto Box, Perfect Cycles, or Vintage Addiction, were responsible for providing content this exhibition in which, in a small room, choppers and bobbers, café racer, trackers or scramblers were mixed, all united under the common denominator of being unique bikes, which have been created to satisfy the tastes of a kind of motorists, fortunately more and more abundant, and for them their bike is much more than a simple conveyance. We hope that in future editions of the Moto Oh! Barcelona this initiative that al- lows Spanish builders show their work is maintained, and even, as is already done in other international events of the same type, it will expand by incorporating more segments of professionals involved in custom culture... and that we’re there to see it. 137 138 139 140 141 142 143 144 145 146 147 148 149 150 151 152 153 BARCELONA 154 155 BARCELONA 156 157 158 159 160 161 162 163 164 165 166 167 168 169 170 171 172 173 174 175 176 177 DraXter 178 The Ducati X-Diavel taken to the extreme If the Italian brand tried to startle everyone attending the Verona Motor Bike Expo... It achieved it. Its “concept-bike” based on the X-Diavel was one of the most photographed in the Italian motorcycle event... T e x t : X T B ; P i c s : D u c at i 179 C lmost all the brands take advantage of fairs and exhibitions of motorbikes to introduce a special model that make us fans dream about them. Sometimes are to study the degree of acceptance that a model can have between the public before it ‘s built in series, others are just exercises in style with which the design department guys have fun, and some more a way to show the world the technological capacity of the factory. But do it for whatever they do it, they all have a common denominator... They ever leave you indifferent! 180 181 If there’s a factory that knows how to capture our attention like no other, that’s Ducati. Each year the Milan’s EICMA is often the setting for presenting the news, and the Verona Motor Bike Expo, which is focused almost entirely to the world of special preparations, makes the final surprise. 182 183 This year Ducati kept his habit, and if in the milanese event the “star” of the stand was the mega-cruiser X-Diavel, in the city of the most famous lovers of the world, the bolognese brand present us by surprise a machine that left us breathless. 184 185 The DraXter, which is like they have dubbed this “concept bike” of evil and brutal aspect based on a X-Diavel, it has been made entirely in Ducati’s Department of Advanced Design’s Style Center to mark the 90th anniversary of the brand, and incidentally remind tifossi veterans (and publicize the younger ones) the narrow relationship that Ducati has maintained throughout its existence with the world of competition. Reason why in the DraXter they do not scrimp efforts to give it the best and most advanced aftermarket components that the industry is capable of manufacturing, within we can find, to name just a few examples, with elements such as the front and rear Öhlins suspension, or the Brembo huge brakes, inherited all of the Ducati Panigale with which participates in the Superbike World Championship. 186 187 With respect to the X-Diavel, whose design is already quite “radical” itself, the aesthetics of the DraXter is even more exaggerated. The fuel tank and a seat cowl smaller than the one from the bike form a stylized set that seems to be made of one piece. In counterpart the chin spoiler, radiator air scoops and the fender are unusually large. They almost look like huge mouths that are willing to swallow everything that crosses their path to the goal, and then spit it out well crushed by the Termignoni for the Pirelli Slick to finish crushing the little that may remain. 188 189 But if the DraXter impresses in pictures, when you see it in live, it scares. Its silhouette looks like a predator ready to skip directly on the jugular, and then it dawns on you that a certain brand that insistently repeat to link their bikes with the “dark side” take us for idiots, or that they lost the last Verona’s appointment. 190 191 www.xtremebikes.es 192 193
