SUMMER
A Collection of Summertime Memories
By: Bernadette Morgan
No matter where we are — whether
in the mountains of Colorado or New
York State, in the valleys of Oregon
or Ohio, or even when it’s showering
in Seattle or steamy in Florida —
when summer arrives, our attitudes
change here too in San Diego with our
endless summer. From Memorial Day
to Labor Day, we embrace the magic
of summer, the idea that living is easy.
It’s true that many of our happiest
memories are of childhood summers,
that’s why “summer’s magic” is
something that stays with us always.
Several Y members have shared a
summertime memory which I pass on
to you.
“Playing softball in a neighborhood
lot under a hot summer sun and
being thirsty.”
“The sense of a glorious expanse of time
with no schedules, commitments or
responsibilities. A time when I can read to my
heart’s de light, start a project and possibly
finish. There is time to think and be.”
“One special memory was going with my
dad to Peconic Bridge on Long Island at
low tide, climbing down to the sand to
rake and capture clams. I loved to wiggle
my toes in the sand and search for the
air holes of the fiddler crabs. Dad made
everything an adventure. We would bring
home our haul and place them in a bucket
of water in the shade so they would relax
and release their hold enough to be pried
open. Dad had a way of sneaking up on a
clam as it lay resting in the bucket awaiting
the opportunity to become Manhattan
clam chowder. Dad would scrape off the
muscles and we would eat them, then and
there — fresh and salty. Clamshells got
scattered in the driveway. That was a Long
Island thing.”
“There is no better entertainment on a summer
night than to watch the magic of fireflies as
they twirl and wink in the warm, dark sky.”
What is your
summertime memory?
“Camping in the rain and having to wring water
from the foam mattress the next morning.”
“Riding the bus to cool off in the community
swimming pool.”
“Packing a special lunch for a day of sun and
sand at the beach and setting up by the
lifeguard tower, less for protection and more
for shade.”
“As a teenager, hitchhiking to the beach against
parents’ orders.”
“Having time to read.”

PICKLEBALL
What’s the Big Dill?
Pickleball? What’s that? It’s like tennis, racquetball and ping pong... all rolled into one fun sport. The
USA Pickleball Association estimates that there are currently more than 400,000 people actively playing
pickleball. Don’t get left out!
Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, a short ferry ride from Seattle, Washington. Three dads
are credited with creating the game for their kids who were bored with their usual summertime activities.
They had a family dog named “Pickles” who would run off with the ball, thus the name of the game.
Pickleball is played on a court, singles or doubles. Players use a paddle and a whiffle ball, hitting over a low
net. All levels of play are welcome at Mission Valley Y every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
Monday: 8:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m.
Wednesday: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Saturday: 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
