The movement seeks to create awareness among Ghanaians about the commercial, aesthetic and psychological benefits of horticulture and floriculture. It seeks to celebrate Ghana’s unique flora and fauna, whilst pointing people to the income generating and job creation opportunities inherent in them. Ultimately, the aim of the Show is to encourage the harnessing of our flora and fauna for national development and improved livelihoods OBJECTIVES OF THE SHOW • Contribute to the development and implementation of a National Beautification and Gardening policy. • Contribute to making Ghana an even more attractive Tourist Destination • Contribute to the development of Trade and Investment opportunities • Contribute to employment generation. • Contribute to healthy lifestyles and beautiful surroundings. • Promote a culture of environmental awareness and friendliness Other activities being anticipated under the movement include: • A television program on sustainable gardening • Establishment of Garden Clubs • Annual Garden and Flower Calendar etc. Key elements of the movement include: •`The Annual Ghana Garden and Flower Show ISmade up of a conference, workshops, exhibitions and business networking opportunities • Bloom – A Garden and Flower Magazine • A Garden and Flower Website The Ghana Garden and Flower Show The Show is held once a year and consists of a conference, workshops, exhibitions and other activities such as fashion shows, food art, etc Strategic Communications Africa Ltd (Stratcomm Africa) – Event Organizer Stratcomm Africa is a total Communication, Reputation Management, Events Management and Research Agency specializing in evolving and implementing communications strategies for companies, individuals and governmental institutions in both national and international settings. Stratcomm Africa is proudly collaborating with its partners to promote and deepen a Gardening and Flower culture in Ghana. He studied at Mpraeso Secondary School, Achimota School and the University of Ghana Legon. He read International Relations briefly at the Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland USA. He has hands on experience in the tourism industry and was also the Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourist Board. These experiences deepened his passion for promoting Ghana as a tourist destination in the overseas and regional markets, as well as promoting domestic tourism and creating awareness about the benefits of tourism in Ghana. Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim is the Member of Parliament for Nanton in the Northern region. He is a trained teacher, a Psychologist and a Development Planner. He also holds a Masters degree in International Relations and Diplomatic Practice. Hon.. Murtala has served on many committees in Parliament including the committees on Environment, Science and Technology and Finance. He was formerly the Deputy National Coordinator for the National Youth Employment Programme. He has served his country as a Deputy Minister at what used to be known as the Ministry of Information and Media Relations and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations respectively. His Excellency Mr. Hans Docter Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Togo H. E. Mr. Hans Docter is the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Ghana. He trained at the University of Amsterdam and has 22 years of experience in Foreign Affairs. Prior to his appointment in Ghana, he served as the Deputy Head of Mission to the Netherlands Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. He has also held various positions at the Netherlands ministry of foreign affairs including the West Africa Desk in the Hague (92-95); Russia, Economic and Trade Affairs (95-98); Indonesia, Political Affairs(98-2002); The Hague, human rights department (2002-2004) and Sudan, Political Affairs (20042006). The Royal Netherlands Embassy, under the theme, “Holland-Ghana, Growing Together”, seeks to build, and promote a sustainable and mutually beneficial relationship between the Dutch and Ghanaian economies. The Royal Netherlands Embassy, are pursuing both public and private sector initiatives in various sectors of the Ghanaian Economy, including Water, Sanitation, Health and Life Sciences, Agriculture as well as other sectors. Dolapo Ogundimu Managing Director, Access Bank Ghana Dolapo Ogundimu is a seasoned banker with over 25 years of high-level professional banking experience in the sub-region. He has been recognized as a change manager and contributor to the development of the financial services industry in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana. In Ghana, he pioneered Guaranty Trust Bank to become one of the most successful banks in the industry. Dolapo is an alumnus of the Kellogg School of Management, Executive Management Programme of the Columbia Business School (USA), International Institute for Management Development (IMD) Switzerland and the Lagos Business School. He holds BSc and an MBA from the Ogun State University in Nigeria. Mrs. Florence Benson Managing Director of Floben’s Creation Designs Mrs. Florence Benson “The Orchid Lady” is an ardent orchid collector whose hobby has turned out to be a successful business venture. She re-designed the gardens of Ghana Breweries, Christ the King Parish and many other prominent locations in Ghana and the sub region. Mrs. Benson is also a seasoned fine Art Collector with works spanning over 40 years. Her collection includes works from well- known artists such as Professor Ato Delaquis, Bruce Onobrakpeya among others. Ms. Esther Amba Numaba Cobbah Esther, Chief Executive Officer of Strategic Communications Africa (Stratcomm-Africa), is a Communication professional with over 30years experience in the Communication Industry. She is passionate about the use of Communication as a tool for development and is continuously exploring, evolving and employing innovative approaches to facilitate social development, organizational growth and improved livelihoods. Her company, Stratcomm Africa, is celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year. Esther has won several awards and is currently the CIMG Marketing Woman of the Year. She is a product of Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast, Ghana and has undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the University of Ghana, Legon and Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. Esther loves Gardening. Her role in organizing the Ghana Garden and Flower Show is an expression of her continued quest to use her Communication expertise to advance human well-being in innovative ways. Very Rev. Paa Solomon Grant – Essilfie The Very Rev. Paa Solomon Grant – Essilfie is the General Manager of Methodist Schools. He currently also pastors Asbury Dunwell Church, an interdenominational church in Accra. Conference Speaker Profiles Dr. Barfour Osei Dr. Baffour Osei, currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF), is a well respected Development Economist with a PhD in Economics from the University of Strathclyde. Dr. Osei has over 30 years experience as an economist, having worked with several Universities, Research Institutions and International Organizations including the World Bank, IMF, UNIDO, OECD, European Commission, UK ODI, and GTZ. Before joining EDAIF Dr. Osei was a Chief Economist at the African Development Bank. Professor Lewis Enu-Kwesi Professor Lewis Enu-Kwesi is a Botanist with specialisation in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry at the Department of Botany University of Ghana. His research interests have been in Environmental Physiology, adaptations to water stress (drought), biodiversity, the scientific basis for traditional ago forestry systems and sustainable agro ecological knowledge and farming practices. He has been lecturing at the Department of Botany University of Ghana Legon since February 1988 and is currently on post retirement contract. He is a naturalist with interest in plants and has a love for flowers, landscaping and gardening. Dr. Naa Lamle Amissah Dr. Naa Lamley Amissah,PhD is an alumnus of Cornell University, an American private Ivy League and federal land-grant research university located in Ithaca, New York. She is a Lecturer Department of Crop Science University of Ghana, Legon: Specialty: Entomology/Horticulture Dr. Sammy Sackey Professor Sammy Sackey is a Professor of Biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology at University of Ghana with over 30 years professional experience. Professor Sackey worked for several years at the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana as a Molecular Plant Pathologist before moving on to the University of Ghana as a Biochemist. Professor Sammy Sackey is a national advocate who has been involved in activities such as the development of young scientists and the promotion of the use of Tissue Culture Technology as a means of increasing plant yields and resistance to disease. He obtained his degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Ghana and a PhD in Philosophy at the University of Adelaide. Mrs. Mawuena Trebarh Mawuena Trebarh, currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Promotion Council, has over 15 years experience in Ghana’s corporate context, working at a senior executive level with blue-chip firms such as Ashanti Goldfields Company Ltd, Newmont and Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN). Mrs. Trebarh explored her entrepreneurial skills when she became Founder and Chief Business Strategist of Inspire Africa Consult Ltd, a business strategy-consulting firm. Mrs. Trebarh has been recognized both nationally and internationally for excellence in reputation management and has been a recipient of several national awards. Mrs. Trebarh holds a B.Sc. in Geology & Mining from the University of Jos, Nigeria and an MBA in Strategic Planning and New Business from Bentley College’s McCallum Graduate School of Business, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Mr. Gerald Nyarko Mensah Gerald Nyarko Mensah is a professional trainer in export management and an export product and market development specialist with over 15 years experience managing national export development programmes. Mr. Mensah is currently the Ag Director, Export Trade Support Services at Ministry of Trade and Industry. He has been instrumental in the promotion of Agricultural, Agro-Industrial, Manufactures, Craft and Décor exports as well as export of services and has led the development of diverse export promotion and capacity building programmes for the Ghana Export Promotion Council Mr. Thierry van Helden Thierry van Helden, First Secretary at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, has been in Ghana for two years and promotes the development of agriculture in Ghana. He finds that especially horticulture has many opportunities that are of mutual interest to both Ghana and the Netherlands. Amongst other things, he has set up a commercial vegetable programme, GhanaVeg, that focuses on the modernization of Ghana’s vegetable sector in collaboration with the Dutch horticulture sector. MODERATOR Mrs. Karen Hendrickson, co-author of Ghana’s Beautiful Gardens Dynamic, hard working, adventurous and fun loving are just a few of the adjectives that can be used to describe Karen. Her zest for life is often as infectious as her laughter. She hails from the lovely island of Bermuda but has chosen Ghana as her home since 2004. She has numerous hobbies that she pursues with enthusiastic vigour. But most of all she enjoys giving back to the community, and is thrilled to be a Trustee for the Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana. Her extensive international business experience and philanthropy work takes most of her time but she finds time for her love of photography, orchids, gardening and enjoying the company of friends. The inspiration and ideas I receive from this show are immeasurable. So is any effort one puts into an event or gathering of people to celebrate the bountiful riches of nature. So too is the Ghana Garden and Flower Show an inspiration to those who participate and come to enjoy it. May it GROW from strength to strength and inspire everyone to garden and plant and most importantly of all to preserve and conserve the natural beauty we are provided with. Profile of Organiser of the Nigeria Flower Show Mrs Winihin Ayuli-Jemide Chief Executive Officer And Founder Winihin Jemide Series (Organiser of the Nigeria Flower Show) Ms. Jemide is an entrepreneur whose passion for nature and beautiful environments led her outfit to organise the Nigerian Flower Show. The show was driven by the need to share the best of gardening and floral art, while informing and inspiring attendees by sharing and building knowledge. The 2-day event, which opened in Lagos, drew flower enthusiasts and curious minds who strolled through an indoor venue transformed into a beautiful setting of colours, exotic flowers and creative displays of ornaments. The Winihin Jemide Series sponsored a team from the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement to participate in and exchange ideas at the Show. The Ghana Garden and Flower Movement expresses gratitude at this good-natured gesture and looks forward to working with its counterparts in Nigeria to spread the Green Movement across the sub-region and beyond. Resource Persons: Bernard Nana Yaw Tuffour Workshop Resource Persons Workshops for Adults Patrick Masoperh A very well known name associated to with gardening/floristry and landscape horticultural know-how in Ghana today, Patrick Masoperh is a passionate “planta-holic”, who literally grew up among plants and is a formidable storehouse of gardening knowledge. His work experience began working with his mother, Dr (Mrs.) Elizabeth Masoperh, in her business, Green Thumb flowers. Patrick currently heads Hortserve Landscapes Consult, a vibrant outfit that offers a wide range of Landscape and floral services including training. Arafua Apaloo-Aning Writer, political activist, photographer and Garden Enthusiast; Arafua loves gardening and has a talent for making anything grow. Named “the green thumb” by her friends and acquaintance, Arafua formed a partnership with a fellow nature lover and photographer Karen Hendrickson to create and co-author the “Ghana’s Beautiful Gardens” coffee table book. Bernard Nana Yaw Tuffour He is the Managing Director of FloraLife limited and an active paid up member if the Ghana Institute of Horticulturalists. He is a Member of ornamental research program organized by AGSSIP in 2005, he was also a resource person in a career development program for students offering BSc Landscape Design and Management at KNUST. He played an instrumental role in assisting with the development of course materials for special topics in floriculture for Distance learning students for 2009/2010. Surama King She is currently a Teacher at the Tema International School and the Head of its Community Action Service team. Trained in Art, Surama is an extremely creative and energetic individual. She put her creativity to work when she ran a very successful home business called Africandle, which produces many different types of candles with various uses. She was a former teacher at Angels Specialist School and is currently an executive member of the Children Heart Foundation Naa Torkornoo Naa is the CEO of FarmerTorks an online portal for the sale of fresh vegetables and fruits. She is very passionate about gardening and has succeeded in sharing this passion with the younger generation by taking children through garden classes. Naa works as a marketing executive with an agro chemical company in Ghana and is very delighted to be onboard this year’s Ghana Garden and Flower Show. Happy Ideall Mr. Ideall is professional potter, CEO and Creative Director for the Happy Art Academy, a not-for- profit art training institution established to advance appreciation and understanding of arts by offering training to the youth, less privileged and marginalised women. With the help of expert trainers from the Happy Art Academy and Metamiss Ceramics, children will learn the various methods of producing different garden ornaments and also experiment with the potter’s wheel. It will provide insights into areas of study and help people chart career paths that not only contribute to generating income but also underscore the importance of being good stewards of the earth, creating a healthy and attractive environment to live in. Workshop Resource Persons Brian Frimpong Brian is seasoned investment professional with over 15 years experience in private equity, investment banking and corporate strategy. He is an avid collector of orchids and has a growing portfolio of many different species over the past few years. Nana Kwame Addo Nana Kwame is a passionate clay artist and Chief Executive Officer of Metamiss pottery, a flourishing outfit that supplies colourful pots to some of the most prominent floral companies in Ghana. Nana is passionate about imparting art and environmental awareness to children and is excited to be leading a workshop this year. Ralph Mannang Ralph Mannang has a Diploma in Horticulture from KNUST and Certificates in Park Management (Republic of Singapore, 1999), Bamboo Processing and Utilization Technology (Hangzhou, China 2005) and Horticulture (School of Horticulture, Aburi Botanic Gardens). He also has over 30 years work experience with the Department of Parks & Gardens eventually becoming Chief Landscape Designer. He has served in various roles such as Regional Head of Department (Regional Landscape Designer, Koforidua), Nursery Manager and Deputy Director at Parks & Gardens Head Office, Cantonments, Curator of Aburi Botanic Gardens and Tutor at the School of Horticulture, Aburi Mr. Abedi Lartey Mr. Abedi Lartey trained as a Landscaping Officer in 1964 and has acquired several decades (over 50 years) of experience in Horticulture and Landscaping. He played an instrumental role in raising awareness about and generating interest in horticulture in Ghana. He is an originator of the business of nursing plants for sale in the country, and his activities have led to the generation of jobs for many in the country. Mr. Lartey has been the President of the Ghana Horticulture Society for several years and supported in the development of the Institute of Horticulturalists. He is still very much involved in Landscaping for individuals and businesses. The aim of the food art segment will explore healthy but creative ways of presenting food for consumption. Our seasoned chefs will prepare garden themed edible art at their stands for public voting. They will also provide tips on creating simple, fun ,and colourful food for parents with picky children.
