2013 Annual Guide Northwest
www.MississaugaKids.com | PG. 3 Dear Readers, Welcome to the 7th Annual Guide of Mississauga Kids. As a parent, finding the right activities and facilities for my children has always been an enduring quest and certainly a challenging one. In 2012 I was presented with the unique opportunity to help other local parents do just that. By the middle of August 2012 I became the proud new publisher of Mississauga Kids Guides and owner of Pumpkinseed Publishing Ltd. As a parent and an aspiring entrepreneur with experience on the production side of publishing, the fit was perfect. During the early fall, I worked very closely with Anne Green, the founder and previous publisher of Mississauga Kids. My goal during this time period was to ensure there was a smooth transition for all our customers and all our readers. I hope that you will find the same familiar look, feel and convenience that Mississauga Kids has always provided. While working with Anne it quickly became evident that we both have the same passion and enthusiasm about children, parenting and helping others. I aspire to carry on Anne’s legacy while I grow Mississauga Kids into the future. I am diligently working on improving and increasing our online presence while maintaining everything that Mississauga Kids has stood for. As you flip the pages of this issue YourFamilyDirectory.com directory will have been revised and updated. It will be better and easier to use, just like the web site improvements completed in October. Do not fear, your guide will continue to come to the mailbox as I believe a paper magazine continues to have its place alongside Mississauga Kids’ growing internet presence. Five months later, I find I am working harder than ever, learning and even more enthusiastic about keeping you informed. Please let our advertisers know that you saw them in Mississauga Kids! If you know a family friendly business that would like to work with us let us know! Wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and FUN filled 2013! You see, there was this boy, Jack, who kept on pushing me against the wall when we went to the washroom. I told him to stop, but he wouldn’t, so I told the teacher. The teacher asked him why he was doing it, but Jack said he didn’t know, after which the teacher separated us from each other in activities. Two weeks later, I was surrounded by a group of kids, and suddenly Jack opened a locker door and pushed me in, and it really hurt! Some girls saw what happened, and went to get the Principal, who took us both to the office. He gave us a good talk, Jack apologised, and we haven’t had a problem since then. I was lucky – the principal was available when I was being “attacked”, and treated the issue seriously, but many other children are not so lucky.” Why is it important to learn about bullying? You need to learn how to react to it, how to protect yourself and how to be ready to deal with it, if it happens again. Bullying is a learned behavior. Kids can learn it anywhere, at home, on the playground, in school or in their neighborhood. Bullying has been around for many years, and is now more noticed since children also have access to Facebook, twitter, cell phones, computers and other means of electronic communication. All their actions can be seen by people all over the world. What do you do when someone bullies you? What do you say when someone bullies you? Who do you go to for help? You want to be able to know what bullying is so you recognize it when you see it happening to others. You also want to prevent yourself from becoming a bully. Different types of Bullying: There are different types of bullying – Verbal (when someone is mean to you with their words), Physical (when someone hurts you on purpose), Emotional (when someone hurts your feelings), and Cyber (when people bully you on the internet). What to do! This is a very serious problem that is getting significant media coverage in recent months. As a parent, teacher or child, take every opportunity you can to learn as much as you can about the subject. About Marishka Glynne Marishka’s mission is to provide guidance to children, parents and teachers to discover their power within and to achieve their goals for personal excellence and optimal wellness. What does a Bully look like? Marishka specializes in the development of self-empowerment. She works with children and adults who are struggling with personal set-backs, self-doubt, lack of confidence, fear, anxiety and limiting beliefs that prevent them from moving forward with clarity, passion and purpose. Kids who bully look a lot like you or me. So it’s not what they look like, it’s what they do that makes them a bully. Bullies can be girls or boys and they aren’t all rough and tough looking. Anyone can bully, even you! www.bullybustercoach.com Marishka@bullybustercoach.com Twitter@themarishka.com 905.847.9890 office PG. 3 | www.MississaugaKids.com www.MississaugaKids.com | PG. 4 2013 CALENDAR JANUARY JANUARY JANUARY JANUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY 8 8 17 17 8 FEBRUARY JANUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY FEBRUARY MARCH MARCH MARCH 17 12-13 12-13 MARCH 12-13 FEBRUARY MARCH MARCH MARCH 11-15 11-15 11-15 12-14 12-13 MARCH MARCH MARCH MARCH 11-15 APRIL APRIL PA-DayAPRIL JUNE JUNE JUNE 14-16 14-16 14-16 EARLY A professional both Public and Catholic School Boards.
