Alsace, Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine are now also merged into a single large region, to be known as Grand Est (Greater East), ACAL, or perhaps even under another name. The new region is situated along the borders of several European countries: Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany and Switzerland. 3<< (Sources : www.strasbourg-events.com) DP ADT GB 2016 _Mise en page 1 02/02/16 10:49 Page5 왎 Key Figures for Alsace Number of inhabitants Strasbourg Eurometropole Mulhouse (34 municipalities) Colmar (14 municipalities) 1 859 869 473 375 264 723 101 972 (28 municipalities) Importance of Alsace within the ACAL Region 33,5 % Population Density 224,6 inhabitants/km² compared with: 118 in Metropolitan France 96.6 in ACAL Area 8 280 km² compared with: 57 433 km² in ACAL Importance of Alsace within the ACAL Region 14.4% Top 10 fee-paying attractions The most visited sites in Alsace 784 450 River boats / Strasbourg 544 862 Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle / Orschwiller Zoological and botanical garden / Mulhouse 400 931 307 704 Monkey Mountain / Kintzheim 228 993 Visit to Cathedral platform / Strasbourg Alsace Environmental Museum (Ecomusée) 196 051 Ungersheim 190 943 Cité de l’Automobile Museum / Mulhouse 185 000 Unterlinden Museum / Colmar European Centre of Deported Resistance Members 172 745 Struthof Concentration Camp / Natzwiller Le Vaisseau Science Centre for Children 165 443 Strasbourg (Août 2015, clicalsace.com - Observatoire Régional du Tourisme Chiffres 2014) Source : Insee 2012 Tourism 7 major hiking trails and 11 000 km of marked hiking paths 13 ski areas Over 420 km of navigable waterways Almost 2 500 km of bicycle routes 229 fee-paying attractions 21 memorial sites 12 golf courses 29 Michelin-starred restaurants >>4 DP ADT GB 2016 _Mise en page 1 02/02/16 10:49 Page6 New Facilities ! 5<< 왎 Museums ned Ope mber ece 12 D 015 2 Unterlinden Museum > COLMAR Today, the extended Unterlinden Museum rivals the greatest international museums. Under the aegis of internationally renowned firm HERZOG & De MEURON, the works (cost € 43,917 including tax) have doubled its exhibition area, restored the former Dominican Convent and created an area for contemporary art. The project comprises two main buildings on either side of Place Unterlinden: on one side, the mediaeval cloister with the chapel - home to the famous Isenheim Altarpiece - and on the other a new wing approximately the same size as the chapel and which, together with the former public-baths building, forms a second courtyard. Both buildings are connected by an underground passageway comprising 3 exhibition rooms. DP ADT GB 2016 _Mise en page 1 02/02/16 10:49 Page7 T he quality of the contents is on a par with that of the architecture. As well as world-famous mediaeval and Renaissance works such as the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald and Niklaus von Hagenau (1512-1516), the collections include drawings, engravings, photographs, paintings, and sculpture. The modern art collection began to expand in the 1960s. The former public baths are also used as a venue for events organised by the museum or private receptions. www.musee-unterlinden.com >>6 DP ADT GB 2016 _Mise en page 1 02/02/16 10:49 Page8 New Facilities 왎 Museums (continuated) OPENING Luggage Museum > HAGUENAU l Apri 2016 N ext April, the City of Haguenau will be inaugurating its new Luggage Museum (Musée du Bagage) in the former Banque de France building. Most of the items on display are taken from the remarkable collection - one of a kind in Europe - constituted by Jean-Philippe and Marie Roland, which includes six hundred trunks, suitcases and other items of luggage of various origins and in various styles, dating from the 18th century to the 1960s. Not only do the exhibits showcase the know-how of their manufacturers and creators; they also reflect changing modes of transport (stagecoach, train, ocean liner, aeroplane). Some pieces are unique, in particular those from luxury design houses such as Louis Vuitton, Goyard and Moynat. The permanent collection will be complemented by a series of themed exhibitions. For all these reasons, a 1 200 m² Heritage Interpretation Centre dedicated to pipe organs and flutes - both wind instruments - will be opening in Marmoutier. Known as “Point d’Orgues” (the French name for the fermata), the CIP will rely on a scientific, digital and electroacoustic approach to introduce the public to pipe organs by means of a variety of sensory workshops, and will also guide visitors through Alsace’s exceptionally rich heritage in this area. Special emphasis will be placed on the 1710 Silbermann organ, the oldest in Alsace, located in Marmoutier’s former abbey church. www.cc-marmoutier-sommerau.eu 7<< DP ADT GB 2016 _Mise en page 1 02/02/16 10:49 Page9 OPENING Kochersberg Cultural Pole > TRUCHTERSHEIM of End 2016 T his project is being implemented at the heart of Kochersberg, a fertile agricultural area to the west of Strasbourg.
