MMI’s history dates back to 1879
In the late 1800s, Eckley B. Coxe, a captain of the coal industry, recognized the profound need for
American technical schools for students who would otherwise not have such an opportunity. On May 7,
1879, Coxe opened the Industrial School for Miners and Mechanics. Eleven young men worked in the
coal mines by day, then attended two-hour classes six nights a week.
Deep in the heart of the Northeastern Pennsylvania coal belt, MMI began improving lives. An MMI
education often meant the difference between the hardscrabble life of a laborer and that of a certified
miner, a foreman, or even a superintendent. While most of MMI’s early students managed coal mines,
some went off to college. Many returned to the mines as engineers and worked to ease and improve
the work environment of thousands.
In 1888, Eckley Coxe moved the school to a new location and changed the name to the Mining and
Mechanical Institute of Freeland. Coxe began offering scholarships to the school’s best students in
1894. After he died suddenly in May 1895, Eckley’s widow, Sophia G. Coxe, assumed responsibility for
the school.
The dawn of the 20th century saw MMI’s enrollment continue to grow. Sophia, affectionately known as
the “Angel of the Anthracite,” oversaw the construction of a new, larger building and the opening of a
day school, which introduced the college preparatory curriculum.
Mrs. Coxe also helped subsidize student tuition costs, making the school available to more than just the
wealthy. The Angel passed away in March 1926, but the subsidization of student tuition continues to
this day.
Eckley B. and Sophia Coxe
In 1970, young women were accepted into the school for the first time. Then, feeling the old name did not adequately describe the
school’s function of preparing students for the rigors of college academics, officials changed the name to reflect the ideals of Eckley
and Sophia Coxe, the tradition of the region, and the standard of excellence the school was known for.
Today MMI maintains the values of our founders while continually striving to offer the best college preparatory education in the area.
The curriculum, the people, and the physical appearance of the campus have changed over time, but the dedication to the mission and
to serving our local communities is as strong as ever.
Our campus & student life
MMI sits on a 25-acre campus consisting of our school building, new
athletic fields, wetlands and walking trails. The school facility is in very
good physical condition with the Athletic & Drama Complex and Science
& Technology wings being added in 2001. The Joseph A. Turri ’45 Library
and Learning Center addition was completed and dedicated in 2012. We
offer wireless access throughout our buildings.
In 2014, in an effort to provide more healthy meals and do our part to
help the environment, the school began an in-house lunch program that
includes using sustainable, local and made-from-scratch foods while
teaching recycling, composting and gardening. All designed to give
students the tools to make healthy choices and be environmentally aware.
Students also learn to make the world a better place through service to
others and environmental conservation efforts. For example, last October,
the Green Team and the Sunshine Club planted red tulip bulbs as part of
Red Ribbon Week’s Plant the Promise to be Drug Free. In the spring, the
tulips will bloom and remind the students to live healthy, safe and drugfree lifestyles.
Other times, school groups have gone out into the community to help clean parks and other areas as part of
the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful campaign. Many of our students do other community service projects and
volunteer with organizations.
The athletic department plays an integral role within the school community to support physical, moral, and
emotional development of our students. 70% of our student population participates in a variety of sports
at both the mid-school and upper-school level. Students are encouraged to participate not only in athletics
but in various other extra & co-curricular activities such as Environthon, Pennsylvania Junior Academy of
Science, Science Olympiad, Mock Trial, MathCounts, Geography Bee, FBLA, Robotics and more!

Academics:
The four pillars of excellence: Academics, Athletics, Activities
and Service built on a foundation of character are the core of our
program. MMI’s curriculum offers a challenging and rigorous college
preparatory framework that mixes the basics of traditional education
with advanced instruction and electives. In middle school, students
develop their ambition and drive. As they advance to our upper school,
they develop a series of goals, further their commitment to work,
increase their drive to succeed, and take greater responsibility for
their own learning.
The MMI curriculum develops critical thinking and encourages
students to develop very important time management skills. MMI
challenges students and then teaches them how to meet those
challenges. The advisory program, along with a dedicated school
counselor, provides additional academic, emotional and social support.
Our mission is to inspire students to be technologically responsible,
adaptive, and personally successful. We provide students with the
concepts, processes and skills needed to be productive citizens in order to thrive in a rapidly
changing digital society.
Technology is an integral component of the educational process and academic program. MMI’s
computer science and technology curriculum includes internet safety, computer programming
and robotics courses. Additionally, students are utilizing three-dimensional printing technology
as part of their science and math
curriculum with a 3D printer purchased
through a donation to the school.
Because our graduates are so wellprepared, they often find themselves
ahead of the class in their first-year
core courses in college. This makes the
transition to the independence of college
life a lot easier – and it allows students to
branch out and explore new areas of study,
taking electives they otherwise might not
have considered. Our dedicated college
counselor works individually with students
to ensure they find the right college fit.
