TRICON 2015
2
WWW.TRICONWV.COM
There’s always a moment in any project where you start to realize its full potential.
That moment for us was at the end of the 2014 Tricon. When we saw the total
number of people who had passed through our doors, we started to realize that the
show was developing a following that was enjoying it as much as we do.
People started seeing themselves in the con, signing up for table space to showcase
their own talents and projects. Asking us how they could help improve areas of the
show they wanted to see stand out. Tricon went from a show that two friends were
putting on to an event fueled by its own small community of comic enthusiasts.
Tricon’s fourth year needed to have a voice all its own, and thanks to a TON of
planning and pre-preparation, we’ve finally stepped back and see where all the hard
work has landed us, and we’re happy to report we have the makings of a great show.
Our guest list this year features creators like Ben Templesmith, Cory Smith, Paul
Allor, Eryk Donovan, Brian Level, and so many other amazing creators of the best
comics in print today. We’re also very proud to have Jewel City Championship
Wrestling stepping up to sponsor special guest Diamond Dallas Page.
One of the best new features of this year’s show, however, is the Tricon Exclusive
covers for titles like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ‘68 and Eccentrix! What better
way to showcase the great talents we have available at Tricon than with specially
made comic covers! Many creators that have produced these books—and the special covers for these books—have long-time associations with the show, and we’re
hoping that these titles will help to shine a brighter light on comics that range from
independent productions to full-blown mainstream titles.
As always, being comic creators ourselves, we want to push a spotlight on Independent Press. With our background as the heads of Broken Icon Comics, we have an
interest in gaining attention for both our independent label and others in the same
field. While the promotion of independent labels will never be as high-profile as,
say, Marvel or DC, independent presses make up a vital role in the comics industry,
and a lot of what Tricon stands for is geared toward helping the independents stand
out and provide an atmosphere where we all can thrive, so—as we said in previous
years—don’t be shy about treating yourself! The creators appreciate it and you’ll get
some excellent stories out of the deal. Enjoy!

Q&A:
DIAMOND
DALLAS PAGE
SPONSORED BY:
Jewel City Championship Wrestling reached out to pro wrestler
Diamond Dallas Page to help promote the work they are doing in
Huntington’s wrestling scene.
TRICON: You’ve made a big splash with your use of yoga. Since this form of exercise was never widely related with pro wrestling before, why did this particular fitness style appeal to you?
TRICON: Did you have any push-back when
publicizing DDP Y, or was it quickly adopted?
TRICON: How was it getting back in the
ring at the Royal Rumble this past January?
DDP: Before the age of 42, Yoga by itself never
appealed to me. I didn’t start wrestling till I was
35 years old and my career didn’t take off until
I was 40, which was back in 1996. Throughout 1997-1998. At 42 I was one of the top 10
Sports Entertainers in the world and I was a
guy who wouldn’t be caught dead doing yoga,
but I blew my back out and 3 of the top spine
specialists in the world told me my career was
over.
At that point I was ready to try anything
which is when yoga entered into the picture.
I was blown away by how much it helped me
with my flexibility and core strength. I took the
basics of yoga and added in rehab techniques,
old school calisthenics, and a slow-motion burn
DDP: I don’t know what you mean by pushback? If you’re asking was it easy to get the
word out about DDP YOGA...HA HA HA,
Hell No! You have to remember that I never
created DDPY for people who do yoga. I developed DDPY for people like me who originally
wouldn’t be caught dead doing yoga! Think
about that...there are over 20 million+ yogi’s
out there that love all different degrees of yoga,
so I had to make one person after another understand what DDPY was all about.
As they saw the amazing transformations
on www.DDPYOGA.com come about, they
quickly realized that it was a Kick-Ass Cardio
workout that will dramatically increase your
flexibility and strengthen your core with minimal joint impact. Today, over 100 professional
wrestlers use DDPY along with MMA fighters
and professional football players etc. But the
real explosion came from regular people around
the world doing extraordinary things, transforming their bodies and owning their life with DDPY.
DDP: It was Awesome! The Crowd POPPED
HUGE when my music hit. Everyone jumped
to their feet making the Diamond Cutter hand
sign, which felt amazing considering I haven’t
been in a match in WWE in over 13 years and
I really only wrestled for WWE for about 6
months.
It really was mind blowing. I got to hit 3
Diamond Cutters before getting tossed out...I
couldn’t have booked it any better if I booked
it myself!
This was my last time in the ring and an incredible end to my wrestling career. I would
have NEVER been able to do any of what
you saw at The Rumble if I wasn’t doing DDP
YOGA 5 days a week! The craziest part is that
within the next two years, DDPY will surpass
what I did in my professional wrestling career...
and that is truly amazing!
movement that I call Dynamic Resistance.
This type of resistance jacks your heart rate
up into the fat burning zone literally standing
still. In less than 3 months of doing this type
of workout, which would later become DDP
YOGA, I was back in the ring.
At 42 years old the spine specialist said my career was over at 43 years young I was the Heavy
Weight Champion of the World! I decided
right then and there I would keep doing DDP
YOGA for the rest of my life! With in a year I
was sharing my workouts with other men and
women who wouldn’t be caught dead doing
yoga but loved DDPY. The rest is history.

TRICON AT BIG SANDY SUPERSTORE ARENA
BEN TEMPLESMITH - Q&A
TRICON:
Your subjects usually gravitate toward
noir and science fiction settings that often
tangle with supernatural elements. What
is it about these genres that keeps you engaged?
BEN TEMPLESMITH:
My style just lends itself to more moody
subject matter I think, plus, the darker I can
go, the less my horrible drawing ability is
noticed! I like the more fantastical stuff in
general because, well, who doesn’t. You can
do so much more and still speak to current
events, if you’re clever. In comics your only
budget is what you can literally draw. No
CGI, no need to hire a thousand extras and
put them in Namibia. Just your imagination
and a pen.
TRICON:
Talking head panels suck, but sometimes
they’re necessary. What are your approaches to making them more interesting on the
page?
BEN TEMPLESMITH:
I quite often like talking head panels. It’s
what they’re saying that matters. For me it’s
the storytelling that’s key, not the big splash
pages of buff men punching each other. (
Sometimes they’re fun too though ). It’s all
in the angles and the pacing, a lot of which
has to do with how good a script is. I’ve been
lucky to work with one of the best, Warren
Ellis. I learned so much from his scripts, his
dialogue and sense of timing.
The Tricon Creators - By James Maddox & Vladimir Popov
TRICON:
You’ve completed a lot of cover art and sequential art. Which do you enjoy more, and
why?
BEN TEMPLESMITH:
I feel much more accomplished finishing entire
books. Used to be the way that you only got to
do covers if you did the hard yards on interiors.
That’s not really the case anymore, sadly... now
anyone seems to be able to do covers, which are
an art in themselves, for better or worse! I still
love doing covers, especially if I’m given free
range and know what’s actually in the book to
pick the moment to illustrate. And I’m a BIG
fan of a cover reflecting the story, instead of just
being a pinup of a random character. Don’t always get to make that call though myself.
TRICON:
Asking which of your personal projects
you like most is usually a dead end, but
which of your for-hire books have you enjoyed the most?
BEN TEMPLESMITH:
Yeah, you can’t ask that. It’s like asking a parent who their favourite child is. Each job,
each property is different on many levels.
My favourite work is often the thing I most
recently finished. Sometimes it was because
of the finances, sometimes it was the challenge, sometimes it was the people I worked
with, or a never ending combination!
