KUS Kansas Urological Society MESSAGES FROM THE PRESIDENTS I would like to thank everybody for their continued support and participation in the Kansas Urological Society (KUS). As a fairly new society, we rely on input and ideas from all our members to allow the society to be an entity from which we can all benefit and be proud of. The Kansas Urological Society strives to keep its members aware of political changes and topics in the state of Kansas and nationally that will affect the way we practice medicine. Our society provides educational opportunities and offers CME credit at our Annual Forum. We also hope to create an atmosphere of camaraderie among all urologists practicing in Kansas. Collaboration among our members will help us as we transition our practices under the new Affordable Care Act and as Meaningful Use criteria from Medicare become fully implemented. As a society, we can present a unified position to help modify upcoming laws and policy changes in medicine as they apply to the practice of urology. Please let me/us know of any health policy issue that you may be encountering. We may potentially be able to approach legislators and combine forces with other provider groups in tackling some of these issues. Similarly, if you already have a relationship with local and/or regional legislators, let us know so that we may help reach out with you on issues that matter to urologists. Remember, this is your state society and we can only tackle issues if we do it together. Please don’t let a busy work and social schedule lead to apathy in the hopes that someone else will address the problems. We are all in this together to improve the lives of our patients and our practices in an already potentially overwhelming environment. With our society goals in mind, I extend a warm invitation for you to attend the 6th Annual Collaborative Forum of Kansas Urological Society (KUS)/Missouri Urological Association (MUA) on Saturday, February 27, 2016. The one-day Annual Forum is designed to bring together urologists from the states of Kansas and Missouri to discuss the political issues affecting urologists in their respective states. It is also a time to network with old friends and form new friendships with fellow providers in our field. The meeting is also a great educational opportunity to hear lectures and interact with nationally renowned urologists. Please refer to the program for full details. Thank you for allowing me to serve as the president of the Kansas Urological Society this past year. Together we can continue to grow the organization. I encourage everyone to attend the Annual Forum this spring in Overland Park, Kansas. Please also encourage fellow urologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses and staff to attend. I look forward to seeing you soon. Please remember, we need your support to put on CME-endorsed programs like this and to have a urological voice in our community/state. I look forward to seeing you all in February! Ajay K. Nangia, MBBS, FACS KUS President On the behalf of the leadership team of the Missouri Urologic Association, I would like to invite you to the annual MUA/KUS Colloborative Forum. This year's theme focuses on emerging treatments and technologies in urology. The meeting will start off with Dr. Badrinath Konety, chairman of the department of Urology at the University of Minnesota, who will provide us with an update on prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment. He will review the current status of the multiple genetic tests commercially available for prostate cancer as well as the current use of MRI for prostate cancer diagnosis, a radiologic modality now included in the NCCN guidelines. The second half of the morning will focus on Men's Health. Dr. Mohit Khera from Baylor will update us on the current (and still controversial) topic of testosterone replacement. In the afternoon, Dr. Ajay Nangia, urologist at KU and member of the AUA legislative council will tell us how urology is faring in Washington, DC. Our final session will address the use of Blue light cystoscopy, an exciting and perhaps underutilized technology for the diagnosis of bladder cancer. All our subject matter is highly relevant to academic and community urologists alike. I look forward to seeing you. Sameer Siddiqui, MD MUA President 2 GENERAL MEETING INFORMATION Course Description The 6th Annual KUS/MUA Collaborative Forum will be an informational meeting to urologists living or practicing in the states of Kansas and Missouri. The scientific program is a full day of education and will include presentations and discussion on urethral reconstruction with point counter – point on urethra stricture management, management of Peyronie’s Disease, review and discussion of the AUA guidelines and a discussion of surveillance issues in prostate and testicular cancer. A legislative update will also provide urologists practicing in Kansas and Missouri important knowledge on the future of health policy in their state. We look forward to your attendance and participation in the discussions of all the topics. Registration/Information Desk Hours Location: Seattle Prefunction Foyer Saturday, February 27, 2016: 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Exhibit Hall Hours: Location: Monterey Saturday, February 27, 2016: 7:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. EDUCATIONAL NEEDS & OBJECTIVES Educational Needs The field of urology encompasses a wide spectrum of conditions and diseases. The practicing urologist must constantly learn about new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for the diseases that they treat. In recent years, there have been significant advances in the diagnostic tests for bladder and prostate cancer. There have also been many new treatment algorithms and guidelines developed in the field of men’s health, specifically in the areas of Peyronie’s disease and hypogonadism. will assist the urologist in the diagnostic evaluation, counseling patients about the different treatment options and potential side effects, and following these patients post treatment. Blue light cystoscopy was introduced to help in the detection of bladder cancer and especially carcinoma in situ. Randomized trials have shown decreased recurrence with the use of this technology. Adoption by urologists has been slow due to cost of the equipment. This session will update the practicing urologist regarding recent published data on this new technology and present examples of its application. Prostate cancer screening with PSA testing has been an increasingly controversial topic. Urologists consider many factors when deciding whether to biopsy a patient with an elevated PSA. Prostate biopsy has its shortcomings, as the cores are “randomly” obtained. Moreover, prostate cancer is a heterogeneous disease with some patients having low risk disease and others having life threatening disease. New tests are being introduced to help urologists diagnose prostate cancer and identify patients who are at risk of having high risk disease. Studies on multiparametric MRI are showing promise at reducing unnecessary biopsies while not missing high grade cancers. Emerging genetic tests are being studied to help decide when to rebiopsy after a negative biopsy and continued rise in PSA, when to enroll patient in an active surveillance protocol and when to recommend adjuvant radiation therapy after prostatectomy. Educational Objectives At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees should be able to: 1. Describe the new genetic tests introduced for prostate cancer. 2. Recognize the clinical scenarios where prostate cancer genetic tests can be applied and recognize their limitations. 3. Describe the role of mp MRI in diagnosing and treating prostate cancer. 4. Recognize clinical presentation of patients with low testosterone. 5. Describe the diagnostic tests for low testosterone. 6. Explain indications to treat low testosterone and identify treatment options. 7. Recognize the risks of testosterone replacement. 8. Explain the controversy of testosterone replacement in patients with prostate cancer. 9. Describe the presentation of patients with Peyronie’s disease and identify new treatment therapy. 10. Explain the recent AUA guidelines on Peyronie’s disease. 11. Recognize the application of blue light cystoscopy in patients with bladder cancer. 12. Describe the limitations of blue light cystoscopy. Peyronie’s disease is a rare condition that is under diagnosed, with prevalence rate as high as nine percent of the male population. Managing this condition has been a challenge to the urologist as there have not been well-established, FDAapproved treatment options. Recently the FDA approved a new treatment. The AUA has released new guidelines on the treatment of Peyronie’s disease which will be useful to the practicing urologist. Accreditation Please see the website for updates: tinyurl.com/MOKS2016 Hypogonadism is a common condition in aging males. Multiple testosterone replacement therapies with different delivery mechanisms have been introduced into the market in the last several years. There has been controversy regarding the cardiovascular morbidity of testosterone replacement and the risks in patients with a history of prostate cancer.
