NECC ELKHOUND NATIONAL WAS
AN INTERNATIONAL EVENT
The Canadian Elkhound National at Sault Ste Marie on
May 18, 2013 was held in conjunction with the Sault
Ste Marie Kennel Club shows on May 17-19, turning out
to be a fun filled reunion event for several elkhound
owners, handler, and lovers! I was one of the South of
the border participants, but didn’t put as many miles as
most of the Canadians to get to the Soo!! I am about
300 miles from the show site, living near Green Bay WI.
Doris Ingles was the next farthest American, living in
Kimball, Michigan, about 344 miles for her. She was
only at the National, but it was good to see her, even for
the short time. Linda and Kevin Richard rounded out the
American entries. They came from near Pittsburg PA,
almost 700 miles. It was definitely worth their while as
they co-own a pretty nice litter with Nicole Casavechia
and they took home quite a few ribbons for the 7 shows!
The closest Canadian was Donna Weeks …
she had the toughest job of all. She pretty
much set the entire National up.
The closest Canadian was Donna Weeks. Being the
closest didn’t mean she had it easy. In fact, she had the
toughest job of all. She pretty much set the entire
National up. There wasn’t anyone close to her to help
with all the local details.
She did an outstanding job,
as the show went very
smoothly and I think
everyone had a great time.
Paul Woito would be next
closest to the show site, if
he lived all year round in
Canada. But, he is now
able to leave the cold north
for the warmth of Texas
until the leaves come out
again up north!
male pup, which went Best Puppy. I met her husband,
who is just as nice as all the other wonderful Canadian
Elkhound people I have met.
Lisa Bank and her daughter Arielle were busy showing in
the ring as they brought quite a few to show. Getting a
Group One with her Keeno made traveling 402 miles
worth the trip!
Charlie MacInnis came along to help Lisa show and see
everyone. I asked my Corgi friends, the Tesches, if they
knew Charlie. With huge smiles they said they have
been to his place, way back in the woods (American for
bush!!) Charlie you are known, respected and loved in
many different places!
Vincent Bulman, his wife,Terri, and his son Chris drove
509 miles. But they had a huge motel story to take back
with them (more later). I had met Lisa, Arielle, Vincent
and Terri the last time I was here. We had a party at
Donna’s. As I said previously, all the Canadian
elkhounders I have met make you feel right at home.
Gary Vetter has kept telling me to come on up to
Canada, the people are wonderful. The more I come the
more I agree with him.
We had 2 come 494 miles from Ottawa. Liz Sykes was
back in the show ring after a few years. She showed
much better than she claimed to be able to. She still
says she enjoys watching better than showing, but her
Ridge looked very nice out there. He took Reserve
Winners dog at the Specialty. Ridge is Liz’s new
Champion at home, just as all our dogs are, whether
they officially earn the title or not. Ridge earned his Am
Ch rather quickly. Liz will not be able to get to many
shows; we will see if he becomes an official Can Ch, or
just one in her heart!
The other Ottawan, Craig Wilson, owns the brother, Flint,
to my Prairie dog, (co-owned by Paul Woito). Flint and
Prairie are from the Miracle litter … the litter that
Michele Bendickson’s Boomer sired naturally after he
was deemed to be sterile by some pretty high up vets.
The Western part of Ontario was represented by Linda

and Jim Tarnowski who live near Thunder Bay. They had “practicing” medicine! Nothing is ever for sure in
one of the prettiest trips along the north shore of one of medicine, canine or human. I know Flint earned at least

named after that lake.) Jim and Linda traveled about
445 miles according to MapQuest (where I got all the
mileage). It was so nice to see Linda again; she is the

NECC ELKHOUND NATIONAL AN
INTERNATIONAL EVENT (concluded)
The winner of the longest drive was Nicole Casavechia
coming 1382 miles from Nova Scotia. But, she also took
home the most ribbons, so it was well worth the drive for
her! She had a Best in Show in all breed, a Best puppy in
show, a Group 1, Group 2, Best puppy in Group twice. Her
puppy Fluff took BOB in the Specialty. As you see she did
rather well … and I may have missed something.
Elkhounds were very well represented in the 6 all-breed
shows. We had 4 Group 1s, 2 Group 2s and 2 Bests in
Show. In the puppy class, we had One Best Puppy in
Show, and 4 Best Puppy in Group. The Elkies ruled, as it
should be!
I do have to do a little bragging. My Prairie dog, Quiquens
Prairie Chivaree co-owned by Paul, did get 2 BOS, earning
2 majors and 6 points. So we will have to send her back
up north! The next brag is bigger. I am fortunate to co-own
a two-time BIS dog. GCH Quiquen Quartz was shown by
Donna Weeks, who has had him the most. She was able
to hold the leash while he was given the BIS nod by the
judge while the rest of us were jumping and clapping.
Donna was cool as a cucumber! That was a fun day!
We had a raffle to help with expenses for
the next National. We raised over $500 …
most of the prizes were donated …. Not
only did 2 countries come to show, we
had donations from both countries.
We had a raffle to help with expenses for the next
national. We raised over $500, which will really help. This
year most of the prizes were donated by many different
people. This is the second part of the “International Part”
of the show. Not only did 2 countries come to show, we
had donations from both countries. The elkhound
community is a very giving community. Lisa Bank and
Royal Canin were major sponsors, and prizes were
donated by John Olson, (Wisconsin), Dot Wallace, (Texas),
Vicky Zumwalt (Arizona). The raffle items were from all
over Canada. There were many wonderful items, Donna
Weeks did a wonderful job getting all the prizes together,
and did a lot of donating herself. Please make sure you
thank her the next time you see her. It was a lot of hard
work on her part to make this such a success for all of us.
We didn’t spend our entire time showing. Friday night we
had a wine and cheese and lots of other food to enjoy and
we caught up with each other. Saturday after 2 all-breed
shows, we had our National, and then went upstairs to a
very good meal and award ceremony. Then we ended the
raffle.
Sunday, after two all-breed shows, we went down to the
waterfront and gave several people the great opportunity
to see our dogs. Some went for a rather long walk; some
went half way and stopped to enjoy the scenery. I would
tell people if they knew what kind of dog I had they could
get a treat … a few actually knew. Liz Sykes thought I was
getting a dog treat as I dug in my pocket. But, I really did
have people candy! After letting the general public know
what a great breed we have, we went to eat at Doc’s
Riverfront. Good food, good conversation, good company.
Monday, after showing, we all went our separate ways. I
was one of first ones home, only having 300 miles to go!
But, before I leave you, you need to hear the Motel Story
that Vincent told us. This is the same motel we had our
Judge Bonnie Turner in. It seems an exhibitor with Min
Pins (little dogs) was wakened up during the night by her
dogs growling. She got up and saw a snake on the floor …
not just a little snake, a python!! ON THE FLOOR IN HER
ROOM! I would not have been happy. My first thought was,
it could have had those dogs for breakfast! The lady called
the front desk asking for help. Someone came up with a
broom and big dustpan. They swept it into the pan, with
most of it hanging over, and carried it outside and, listen
to this: believe it or not, they LET IT GO in the parking lot.
Vincent was walking his dogs the next morning and guess
what he came across! You guessed it – the same dang
snake. The police were called then and I am not sure
where the snake went from there. Liz Sykes thought I
should make up a story about how our Judge Bonnie
saved the day by getting the snake single-handed.
However, after telling Bonnie about the snake in her
motel ( which she had checked out of already) Bonnie
told us she was not only afraid of snakes, but worms. So I
figured anyone who really knew Bonnie would never
believe the story!
Oh and by the way, judge Bonnie Turner is from Georgia in
the US. The Sweeps judge,
Jean Tremblay, is a
Canadian, so it was an
international judging panel
too.
It was a true international
show well worth going to.

Maria VanDyck – Wolfsheim Reg’d (perm)
Maria Adriana (Tak) VanDyck of Tillsonburg passed away peacefully at the Tillsonburg District Memorial
Hospital on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at the age of 79 years. Beloved wife of the late Jan VanDyck (2008).
Loving mother of Peter VanDyck (Corinne) of London. Cherished grandmother of Joshua and Caleb VanDyck
both of London. Maria will be sadly missed by her nieces and nephews Tony DeVeit, John DeVeit, Paul DeVeit,
Leona VanDyke, Jane Maloney, Benita VanDyke and Marcella DeVeit. Predeceased by her sister Hendrika
Antonia and her husband Johannes DeVeit. A Memorial Service for Maria was held at the Tillsonburg Christian
Reformed Church on Saturday, August 17, 2013.
From Mary & Joe Meaden:
We met Maria and Jan in 1997 when they introduced us to the world of Norwegian Elkhounds. Before we got
our first elkhound, Wolfsheim's Dawn is Rising, we were rigorously interviewed by both Maria and Jan. Part of
passing "the test" was meeting and getting the approval by their pack leader, Sylvie. Fortunately for us, we
passed and were able to get a Wolfsheim elkhound. At the time, Jan teased us by saying that we would love
this elkhound so much that he just knew we would be back for a second one. And he was right. Three years
later, we got our second elkhound, "Wolfsheim's X Edition". Sadly, both have passed away but we continue to
this day to have elkhounds in our home, thanks to Maria and Jan. We enjoyed our contact with them very
much...and we very much feel that the Wolfsheim elkhounds were a special line indeed. We think of Maria
(and Jan) fondly.
Keith Green – Roymark Reg’d (perm)
From Vincent Bulman:
It is with sadness that I report the passing of Keith Green a member of the Norwegian Elkhound Club of
Canada. Keith passed away on March 8, 2013 after a brave battle with cancer. He and Sheri kept attending
dog shows until a few months before his passing.
I met Keith and his wife Sherri, at the St. Catharine’s and District Kennel Club show several years ago. They
came up and introduced themselves as former breeders and owners of Norwegian Elkhounds. They had
come to have “a look” after several years without dogs. Several months later, they attended the Seaway show
with puppy Corey. We became friends. Keith was competitive and never shied in giving me his opinion when
asked or not. Keith, Sherri and Corey attended the Elkhound Booster in Sault Ste. Marie in May 2012. By the
time of the Elkhound owners get together in Oakville of November of the same year, the Greens attended with
their new addition, a female, Dani. With dogs milling about, we played the wonderful game of getting our
leashes untangled. Keith would often talk about his affix Roymark (perm) registered and his success with his
dogs both Elkhounds and Vizslas in the past. At the time of his passing, he and Sheri were looking forward to
a retirement of showing their two Elkhounds. I cannot go to a dog show without thinking of him and his dry
humour.

Barn Hunt … a new event and

Channel 4 TV's documentary on how dogs behave when left alone did produce one scientific finding that turned
conventional canine wisdom upside-down. Instead of gauging a dog’s mood by its waggy tail, we should be looking at
its ears. A heat-sensitive camera showed that when a dog is miserable, his right ear gets hot: negative emotions are
processed on the right side of the brain, causing a rush of blood. When he’s happy, his left ear warms up instead.

Researcher scans dogs in an M.R.I. scanner — completely awake and unrestrained – to determine how dogs’ brains
work and, even more important, what they think of us humans. Now, after training and scanning a dozen dogs, my
one inescapable conclusion is this: dogs are people, too. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/06/opinion/sunday/

Professor Hannes Lohi's research group at the University of Helsinki and Folkhälsan Research Center has identified a
mutation causing chondrodysplasia in Norwegian Elkhounds and Karelian Bear Dogs. A genetic test can now be used
to identify mutation carriers in the two affected dog breeds. The study was published on the scientific journal PLOS
